Alphamin revoit à la baisse son objectif de production d’étain à la mine Bisie en RDC

L’interruption des activités à la mine Bisie, décidée à la mi-mars en raison de l’avancée de groupes rebelles, pèse sur les prévisions annuelles de la compagnie.

En RDC, Alphamin Resources vise désormais 17 500 tonnes d’étain en 2025 à sa mine Bisie, contre 20 000 tonnes initialement. La société a repris ses activités le 15 avril, après un mois d’interruption liée à l’avancée de groupes rebelles dans l’est du pays.

Pour atteindre son objectif révisé, Alphamin a relancé cette semaine le traitement du minerai déjà stocké sur le site. Les activités d’extraction reprendront plus tard dans le mois, avec un retour progressif des employés. Les prestataires logistiques chargés du transport de matériel et de la production d’étain, sont de nouveau mobilisés.

Dans son bilan opérationnel publié le 17 avril, la compagnie annonce avoir produit 4 270 tonnes d’étain au premier trimestre 2025, soit 18 % de moins qu’au dernier trimestre 2024. Cette baisse s’explique par l’arrêt des opérations le 13 mars, alors que les insurgés s’étaient approchés à moins de 110 kilomètres du site.

Si les rebelles se sont désormais éloignés de la mine, le conflit reste loin d’être résolu. Des pourparlers de paix ont été engagés à Doha sous l’égide du Qatar entre les rebelles du M23 et le gouvernement congolais, mais sont aujourd’hui à l’arrêt. De nouvelles prévisions de production d’Alphamin pourraient être publiées selon l’évolution sécuritaire de la situation dans la région.

Australian tin exploration company Elementos has completed a definitive feasibility study (DFS) at its Oropesa tin project in Cordoba Province, Andalucia, Spain, affirming the project’s technical, environmental and economic viability.

Elementos’ Spanish subsidiary, Minas de Estaño de España (MESPA), delivered the study.

The study has established a maiden ore reserve estimate of 15.9 million tonnes (mt) at 0.36% tin, derived from a previously reported mineral resource estimate (MRE) of 19.6mt at 0.39% tin.

The DFS aligns with the recent environmental and mining licence permit applications. It outlines a path for the development of the Oropesa tin project, which is set to become the only mine-to-metal vertically integrated tin operation in the EU.

The study is based on a 1.4mt per annum open-cut mining operation with expected annual production of 3,405 tonnes (t) of contained tin as ingot, targeting the European market over a 12-year mine life.

The mine is expected to bring in A$996m ($629.6m) in EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) over its operating life.

The project has an average life of mine (LOM) all-in-sustaining-cost of $15,000/t tin metal.

The DFS estimates capital costs of the project at €149m ($156m), including a 10.4% contingency. Around 60% of the total capital cost is covered by a lump-sum turn-key price developed with Duro Felguera under an early contractor involvement agreement.

Economic assessments in the DFS are based on a long-term London Metal Exchange (LME) referenced tin price of $30,000/t, projecting a pre-tax ungeared net present value (NPV) at an 8% discount rate of A$270m, a pre-tax internal rate of return (IRR) of 26% and a payback period of 2.7 years.

At the current spot LME tin price of $38,575/t, the project’s pre-tax ungeared NPV jumps to A$587m, with a pre-tax IRR of 42% and a payback period of only 1.7 years.

In March 2025, Elementos announced that MESPA has secured an extension of its rights over a key Oropesa tin project tenement, for which it holds the investigation permit.

Australian tin exploration company Elementos has signed an industrial test-work partnership agreement with Atlantic Copper for the Oropesa tin project in Cordoba Province, Andalucia Autonomous Region, Spain.

The partnership will evaluate the potential for increased tin production and recovery at the project.

Under the agreement, Atlantic Copper will fund the production of a laboratory sample of tin concentrate from Oropesa’s lower-grade ore and process waste.

The subsequent test-work by Atlantic Copper will assess the feasibility of smelting this concentrate into tin metal products at Atlantic Copper’s CirCular plant, situated 245km from the Oropesa open-cut mine at Port of Huelva.

The CirCular plant is a flagship circular economy initiative with an investment exceeding €410m ($448m).

The plant is designed to process approximately 60,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of nonferrous metal shreds and has been declared of ‘strategic interest’ by the Regional Government of Andalusia. It is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2026.

Elementos managing director Joe David said: “This agreement shows the interest of Atlantic Copper as a potential future off-taker in the Oropesa Tin Project.

“This agreement funds the study of a significant value-accretive opportunity which has the potential to deliver higher metallurgical recoveries, which in-turn increases the utilisation of mineral resources and removes further metal content in waste and reject streams.”

Elementos, through its Spanish subsidiary Minas de Estaño de España, is working on developing the Oropesa tin project.

The project is advancing towards its definitive feasibility study, expected this month, and is in the process of obtaining major project approvals.

Oropesa is recognised as a ‘state significant project’ and holds ‘strategic significance’ for the EU’s plan to source local supplies of critical minerals. It is set to be Europe’s first major tin mine with access to key markets.

The project is projected to produce an average of 5,400tpa of tin concentrate, which equates to around 1% of the global tin market supply and 100% of Europe’s domestic mined supply.

In August 2024, Elementos secured four tenements in the Cordoba Province of Spain, bolstering the company’s position around the Oropesa tin project.

Conflit dans l'est de la RDC: extraction suspendue dans la 3e mine d'étain au monde

Le conflit en cours dans l'est de la République démocratique du Congo (RDC) a contraint le groupe minier Alphamin à suspendre ses activités d'extraction d'étain dans la mine de Bisie, la troisième au monde en terme de production.

La mine de cassitérite (minerai d'étain) de Bisie a produit en 2024 environ 17.300 tonnes de concentré d'étain, soit environ 6% de l'offre mondiale de minerai d'étain, selon l'Association internationale de l'étain (ITA).

Depuis l'annonce jeudi de la suspension des activités minières à Bisie, le cours de l'étain a grimpé de près de 10% sur le marché des matières premières à Londres (LME), s'établissant vendredi à 36,315 dollars la tonne, son prix le plus haut depuis août 2022.

Le groupe armé antigouvernemental M23, qui a repris les armes en 2021, soutenu selon des experts de l'ONU par des troupes rwandaises, a conquis ces deux derniers mois les deux principales villes de la région, Goma et Bukavu, à la faveur d'une offensive éclair.

Alphamin a pris jeudi "la difficile décision de cesser temporairement les opérations dans sa mine d'étain de Bisie (...) dans la province du Nord-Kivu", en raison de la "récente avancée de groupes insurgés en direction" du site, indique dans un communiqué la société, dont le siège est basé à Maurice.

L'est de la RDC - et plus particulièrement les deux provinces du Nord-Kivu et du Sud-Kivu - est ravagé depuis trois décennies par divers conflits.

- Composants électroniques -

Ces dernières semaines, le M23 a notamment progressé dans le territoire de Masisi, au nord-ouest de Goma, et se trouve actuellement à environ 110 km de la capitale provinciale, selon des journalistes de l'AFP. Soit à environ une centaine de kilomètres à vol d'oiseau de la mine, située dans le territoire de Walikale, voisin de celui de Masisi.

Selon le service géologique national français BRGM, la teneur moyenne en étain du gisement de Mpama-North, l'un des deux gisements de Bisie, en faisait en 2022 le plus riche du monde.

Alphamin a annoncé en mai 2024 l'entrée en production à Bisie de son deuxième gisement, Mpama-South.

"La sécurité des employés et sous-traitants de l'entreprise est sa principale priorité et elle ne peut être garantie à l'heure actuelle. Tout le personnel lié aux activités d'extraction est en cours d'évacuation", selon Alphamin.

Seuls resteront sur place des employés essentiels à l'entretien, la maintenance et la sécurité du site, ajoute-t-elle, en indiquant "suivre attentivement l'évolution de la situation afin de pouvoir faire revenir son personnel sur le site minier et reprendre les opérations quand elle pensera sûr de le faire".

Selon l'Institut américain d'études géologiques (USGS), la RDC a produit en 2024 25.000 tonnes de minerai d'étain, soit environ 8,3% d'une production mondiale d'environ 300.000 tonnes.

L'étain est principalement utilisé pour souder des composants électroniques sur des circuits imprimés et l'essor des secteurs de l'électronique et des énergies renouvelables alimente une demande croissante, selon les analystes.

- Espoir de négociations -
La RDC "est l'une des deux zones au monde où il est prévu que la production (d'étain) augmente", alors que "d'autres pays commencent à voir s'amenuiser leurs ressources minières exploitées depuis plus longtemps", a expliqué à l'AFP Alastair Munro, expert métaux à la société de courtage britannique Marex.

La suspension des exportations en provenance de Birmanie a également récemment exacerbé les tensions sur l'offre d'étain, a-t-il ajouté.

"La demande est importante, mais les quantités utilisées dans les semi-conducteurs n'ont historiquement jamais été assez importantes pour que le prix des produits soit impacté par une hausse soudaine des prix" de l'étain, a-t-il nuancé.

Le mouvement M23 s'est emparé depuis 2021 de vastes pans de territoires dans les provinces minières des Nord-Kivu et Sud-Kivu, riches également en coltan, minerai dont est extrait le tantale, essentiel à la fabrication des équipements électroniques modernes.

Le M23 a notamment pris le contrôle en avril 2024 de la mine de Rubaya, dans le Nord-Kivu, la plus grande mine de coltan de RDC.

Alphamin se dit "encouragé" par la récente annonce par l'Angola, médiateur dans ce conflit, de la prochaine ouverture, le 18 mars à Luanda, de pourparlers directs entre le gouvernement de Kinshasa et le M23.

Silencieux depuis cette annonce, le président de la RDC Félix Tshisekedi a jusqu'ici opposé un refus répété à toute discussion directe avec le groupe armé, qu'il a qualifié plusieurs fois de "terroriste".

Le M23 s'est dit favorable à ces "négociations directes" tout en émettant certaines réserves, exigeant notamment de M. Tshisekedi qu'il "exprime publiquement et sans ambiguïté son engagement" à ces discussions.

Alphamin Resources Corp. shares fell the most in nine years after Rwanda-backed rebels overran the eastern Congolese city of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province where the company’s tin mines are located.


The stock sank by as much as a third earlier Monday, then pared losses to trade down 9.4% at 97 Canadian cents as of 12:27 p.m. in Toronto.

After a rapid advance, so-called M23 rebels are now patrolling Goma, a trading hub for the Democratic Republic of Congo’s mineral exports to neighboring Rwanda. It’s not, however, a transit point for Alphamin’s tin, which comes from mines about 120 miles west of the city and is sent northeast to Uganda.

Chief executive officer Maritz Smith declined to comment when emailed Monday.

Congo’s east has been wracked by conflict for three decades, a drag on investment in Alphamin, which is listed in both Toronto and Johannesburg. The company started output in the Central African country in 2019 and produced a record 17,324 tons of tin last year. It plans to ramp up to 20,000 tons — about 6% to 7% of global production.

Cornish Metals secures $70 million to boost South Crofty tin project

Cornish Metals (LON, TSXV: CUSN) announced on Tuesday that it has successfully raised £56 million ($70 million) through a fundraising effort involving the issuance of 700 million new common shares. The funds will support its South Crofty tin project in southwest England.


According to the company, the fundraising attracted participation from existing shareholders like Vision Blue and new investors, including the UK’s National Wealth Fund.

“Having achieved numerous important milestones in the last year, including the progress of mine dewatering and shaft refurbishment, as well as completion of a robust preliminary economic assessment, this financing enables the company to maintain the strong momentum as we continue to progress towards a restart of tin production at South Crofty,” CEO Don Turvey said in a news release.

Cornish Metals has spent the last eight years working on reopening the past-producing South Crofty tin mine. The operation was shut in 1998, following more than 400 years of almost continuous production.

South Crofty was the last tin mine in Europe when it closed. Several companies attempted to revive the flooded mines between 2001 and 2013, but due to persistent poor market conditions, the assets were put into administration in 2013.

The new South Crofty is expected to produce 49,310 tonnes of tin metal in concentrate over its productive life, peaking at over 5,000 tonnes in year four.

The goal is achieving first tin production in 2026, as Cornish Metals has already obtained permission for underground mining until 2071, and also secured the environmental permit to dewater the mine.

Shares of Cornish Metals rose 3.45% by 12:10 a.m. EDT. The miner has a market capitalization of C$80.29 million ($55.78 million).

Principal exploitant industriel d’étain en RDC, Alphamin a mis en service en mai 2024 une nouvelle usine de traitement à Bisie, qui a largement contribué à cette hausse de production. Il vise désormais les 20 000 tonnes en 2025.

La société minière basée à Maurice Alphamin Resources a annoncé une production d’étain de 17 324 tonnes pour sa mine de Bisie dans le Nord-Kivu en RD Congo. C’est, précise-t-elle, 38% de plus qu’en 2023, conformément à ses prévisions (entre 17 000 et 18 000 t).

Ses revenus ont aussi progressé, avec la tonne à 30 345 $ en moyenne en 2024 contre 26 009 $ en 2023 informe Bankable. Le bénéfice avant intérêts, impôts, dépréciation et amortissement (EBITDA) a ainsi plus que doublé, atteignant 274,1 millions $ en 2024, contre 135,5 millions $ l’année précédente.

Des critiques émergent néanmoins à propos de son impact sur les communautés locales. Une enquête menée par l’organisation à but non lucratif Mongabay a mis en lumière les plaintes des communautés autochtones de Banamwesi et Motondo, qui accusent Alphamin d’avoir accaparé leurs terres sans consultation préalable.

Quant aux retombées pour le Congo, le gouvernement détient une participation de 5% dans la mine et perçoit une redevance minière équivalant à 3,5% des revenus de vente de l’étain. L’entreprise est également soumise à un impôt sur les sociétés de 30%, conformément à la législation fiscale en vigueur dans le pays.

Solidcore to buy 55% stake in Kazakhstan’s Syrymbet tin deposit for $82.5m

Gold miner Solidcore, formerly known as Polymetal, will buy a 55% interest in Kazakhstan’s Syrymbet tin deposit from Lancaster Group subsidiary Berkut Mining for $82.5 million, it said on Thursday.


The transaction will be financed from existing cash resources and is expected to complete in the fourth quarter of 2024, subject to regulatory approval, it added.

Solidcore said it has completed 3 km of drilling at Syrymbet this year to validate historical exploration results and conduct metallurgical studies. The deposit is suitable for open-pit mining.

The company said it aims to secure board approval for construction in 2025.

Oman’s Maaden International Investment is Solidcore’s biggest shareholder with a stake of 29.7%. Lancaster Group belongs to a group of Kazakh businessmen.

La production d’étain en RDC se partage entre Alphamin Resources qui exploite la seule mine industrielle du pays, et les acteurs de l’exploitation artisanale et à petite échelle. Dans le pays, un nouvel acteur cherche à se faire une place avec un projet d’exploration au Nord-Kivu.

En RDC, Rome Resources s’installe progressivement dans le secteur de l’étain. La société a publié le 20 août les premiers résultats du programme de forage lancé plus tôt ce mois sur le projet Bisie Nord dans la province du Nord-Kivu, avec notamment des teneurs élevées en étain.

Grâce à un trou de forage jusqu’à une profondeur de 164,5 m sur le prospect Kalayi, la société a réussi à recouper une minéralisation titrant entre 1,03 % et 7,12 % d’étain. « Nous sommes ravis de voir une minéralisation d’étain visible dans plusieurs intervalles dans le premier trou de cette campagne de forage et nous sommes impatients de communiquer les résultats d’analyse dès qu’ils seront disponibles », a déclaré le directeur général Paul Barrett.

Les travaux visant à établir une estimation de ressources minérales d’ici la fin de l’année, se poursuivent avec la mobilisation cette semaine de deux nouveaux engins de forage, portant à trois le nombre d’équipements présents sur le site.

Alors que l’exploitation industrielle d’étain en RDC est dominée par Alphamin Resources, le succès de Rome Resources pourrait créer un nouvel acteur important dans ce secteur. Le pays pourrait ainsi renforcer sa place sur le marché mondial de l’étain, où l’offre provient essentiellement des pays d’Asie, comme la Malaisie, l’Indonésie et la Birmanie.

RDC : des travaux de forage lancés sur un projet d’étain au Nord-Kivu

Selon les statistiques officielles, la production de cassitérite (minerai contenant l’étain) en RDC a atteint 33 558 tonnes en 2023. Alors que la société Alphamin est le principal producteur industriel du métal, des compagnies s’activent pour découvrir d’autres gisements économiquement viables.

En RDC, la junior minière Rome Resources a annoncé le 5 août le lancement de travaux de forage sur le prospect Kalayi, situé sur son projet Bisie au Nord-Kivu. Lancés quelques semaines avant une autre campagne similaire sur le prospect Mont Agoma du même projet, ces travaux visent à établir une estimation de ressources minérales d’ici la fin de l’année.

Les travaux à Kalayi consisteront en 12 trous de forage au diamant visant à tester la minéralisation sur 700 mètres et jusqu’à des profondeurs dépassant 100 mètres. Dans de précédents trous de forage, une minéralisation avec des teneurs comprises entre 1,05 % d’étain et 7,21 % d’étain a déjà été identifiée.

« Le prospect de Kalayi présente des similitudes frappantes avec la mine voisine d’Alphamin, Mpama South [la plus grande mine d’étain de RDC, Ndlr] où les teneurs en étain augmentent avec la profondeur. Nous sommes impatients d’informer régulièrement le marché de l’avancement de ces travaux », a commenté Paul Barrett, DG de Rome Resources.

Pour rappel, la production d’étain en RDC est dominée par le secteur artisanal, Alphamin et son projet constituant la principale source industrielle d’étain dans le pays. Situé au nord de la mine d’Alphamin, le projet Bisie de Rome Resources pourrait permettre à terme à la RDC d’élargir sa présence sur un marché mondial dominé par les pays d’Asie.

Cornish Metals on track to deliver South Crofty PEA this quarter as tin prices rise

Cornish Metals (AIM: CUSN; TSXV: CUSN) said on Tuesday that it’s on track to deliver a preliminary economic assessment for its flagship South Crofty tin project this quarter, as tin prices rallied this week to reach over US$30,000 per tonne.

Shares in the Vancouver-headquartered company also rose 14.8% to 16¢ apiece on Tuesday.

Located in Cornwall, U.K., the 100% owned South Crofty project is the site of a former high-grade underground tin mine that started production back in 1592 and operated until 1998.

Cornish interim CEO Ken Armstrong said in Tuesday’s release that work is well advanced on the South Crofty PEA, which will be used to support a later feasibility study and a construction decision.

Armstrong also mentioned the timing of the PEA work during a period of strengthening tin prices and an emerging recognition of tin as a critical metal by the U.K. and other national governments.

“Combined with the fact that there is presently no primary tin production in Europe or North America, these factors strongly support our thesis to fast-track work to, if feasible, responsibly bring the South Crofty tin mine back into production,” he said.

Cornish plans to reopen this historic mine by building new processing facilities and all the necessary site infrastructure. It has already obtained permission for underground mining until 2071 and an environmental permit to dewater the mine.

Earlier this year, the company announced it is speeding up the mine restart process by ramping up efforts to refurbish the New Cook’s Kitchen (NCK) shaft at South Crofty, which it said is progressing as planned. By doing so, the Cornish team would be able to bring larger equipment to the mine at an earlier stage of its re-development. In addition to NCK, there are four other shafts still intact for future operations.

In October 2023, Cornish management also decided to start the mine dewatering process, a critical aspect of the mine’s restart given how long it had been in operation. This process is expected to take 18 months to complete, the company previously said. Currently, the submersible pumps and water treatment plant are operating to specifications.

In addition to reviving the underground mine, Cornish is also exploring the additional mineral rights on the South Crofty property for potential discoveries of tin, copper, lithium, tungsten, zinc and silver mineralization.

According to company estimates, South Crofty has the fourth-highest-grade tin mineral resource globally, containing 46,200 tonnes of the base metal in the indicated category and 41,600 tonnes inferred, mostly in the lower mine area, as shown in its most recent technical report (September 2023).
