Advancements in Magnesium Alloys and Magnesium Thixomolding will lead to huge increases in Magnesium demand. How will we increase the magnesium supply to meet that demand? In my view, the best way is by extracting magnesium from seawater by going back the future to resurrect Dow and Norsk Hydro's processes - and Magrathea's doing exactly that.

US Department of Defense forms $28M partnership with Magrathea

San Francisco, 1 February 2024

Magrathea, a company developing innovative technology for the production of carbon neutral light metal from seawater and brines, has formed a $28M public-private partnership with the US Department of Defense (DOD).

The DOD’s capital contribution from the Defense Production Act Title III program will accelerate the scale-up of Magrathea’s technology to a full-scale demonstration plant. The project will bring new primary magnesium metal supply back to the United States for the first time in 40 years and is the US Government’s first major investment in magnesium since World War II. The project will create 40 jobs by 2025 and hundreds of jobs across the United States will be created at Magrathea’s first commercial smelter.

“We are delighted to partner with the DOD to rebuild the magnesium supply base cleaner, faster, and lower cost than ever before,” said Alex Grant, CEO of Magrathea. “This partnership will accelerate delivery of our high purity, carbon neutral light metal products to several critical markets. Aluminum, automotive, and other users who rely on this metal now know that they can depend on Magrathea to deliver with DOD backing.”

Magnesium is the “gateway metal” used in the production of all other structural metals. It is crucial for desulfurization in steelmaking, it is essential in almost all aluminum alloys, it is used to make titanium which is critical for aerospace, and it is consumed in production of several other important materials. Magnesium supply underpins trillions of dollars of trade and national security is impossible without it.

“This grant affirms Magrathea’s lead as the fastest moving, most prospective developer of new light metal supply. We have never seen a company advance this quickly towards such a major government partnership with so much traction and validation,” said Dipender Saluja, Managing Partner of Capricorn Investment Group’s Technology Impact Fund. Capricorn is a Palo Alto, California based technology investment firm with $9B of assets under management and co-lead of Magrathea’s seed round.

The DOD’s announcement can be found here.

Europe aims to revive magnesium output by 2025 to cut China reliance

Reuters | May 20, 2022

EU policymakers have launched a drive to restart domestic output of magnesium, used in aluminum and steel products, with at least three firms working on projects, according to documents and officials.

A European Commission staff working document made available to Reuters places a new emphasis on magnesium and a target of cutting dependence on major producer China, saying investment of up to 2 billion euros ($2.12 billion) will be needed to restart smelting activity in Europe by 2025.

The issue has gained importance for Europe, which consumes a fifth of the global magnesium supply, since the West imposed sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24.

Russia was the world’s fourth biggest magnesium producer last year, with an estimated 21,000 tonnes of output.

Europe’s imports from Russia have been modest and magnesium is not sanctioned, but Russia’s isolation rules it out as a potential fallback should Chinese supplies be cut.

The Commission, the EU executive, is worried that any fall in shipments from China, which supplies over 90% of magnesium to the bloc, could curb production of autos, airplane parts and other products that depend on the mineral.

Supplies from China fell late last year, igniting prices in Europe and focusing the EU on efforts to secure home-grown supplies.

As a result, policymakers, who had last year given top ranking to rare earth magnets used in electric vehicles and wind turbines, made magnesium equal priority in its action plan to secure supplies of critical minerals.

China, which dominates both, supplies 93% of the bloc’s magnesium needs.

“Magnesium has been consistently flagged as one of the critical raw materials with the highest supply risk but with no improvement over time,” the EU document said.

“The magnesium case is a clear example of the risk the EU is taking by making its domestic economy dependent on Chinese imports,” Paul Voss, director general of the European Aluminium Association, said.

The document says the EU should aim to source 15% of its magnesium needs domestically by 2030.

“During the first months of work of the ad hoc working group on magnesium, we have identified… several projects at different stages of development,” Joaquim Nunes de Almeida, head of the European Commission’s Internal Market and Industry directorate, told Reuters in an email.

Vital component

The magnesium market is relatively small, with about 1 million tonnes of annual production, according to figures from CM Business Consulting, compared to 67 million tonnes of aluminum, but it plays a vital role in giving compressed strength to a wide range of products.

“The aluminum can as we know it and the wings of a modern Airbus airliner wouldn’t exist without magnesium,” said Alan Clark of CM Business Consulting.

“The aluminum industry has been riding its luck because there’s no substitute for magnesium.”

Magnesium prices skyrocketed late last year after the Chinese government’s efforts to curb power consumption reduced the output of a range of metals, including magnesium.

In October, European industry groups warned that plant shutdowns could hit millions of jobs if magnesium shortages persisted.

Chinese shipments to Europe resumed, but EU policy-makers had realized the need to revive production.

The last two European sites for magnesium production – in Norway and France – closed in 2001, in part because of competition from cheap imports from China.

There are now three potential European projects that could produce magnesium in the coming years, two in Romania and one is Bosnia, said Krzysztof Kubacki, an official with EIT Raw Materials.

EIT is an EU-funded organization implementing an EU action plan drawn up in 2020 to secure critical minerals for the bloc.

Verde Magnesium, backed by private equity firm Amerocap, is seeking to revive a brownfield mine in Western Romania and is seeking permitting from the government.

Its chairman is Bernd Martens, former head of purchasing at automaker Audi, the premium brand owned by Volkswagen.

Verde hopes to launch production by 2025.

Un gros prospect de Magnésium en Tasmanie avec une concentration trés elevée en magnésium (42 % de MgO)
GWR to acquire 70% stake in Jindalee’s Prospect Ridge magnesite project
he advanced project, which is located 55km from the Port of Burnie in Tasmania, will enable GWR to enter the “green” global magnesium market

By NS Energy Staff Writer 28 Jan 2022

GWR Group has agreed to acquire a stake of 70% in the Prospect Ridge magnesite project in Tasmania, Australia from HiTec Minerals, a fully-owned subsidiary of Jindalee Resources.

The acquisition will be executed by GWR Group through its wholly-owned subsidiary Tasmanian Magnesium.

Located in northwest Tasmania, the Prospect Ridge magnesite project is an advanced asset.

A considerable amount of work at the project is said to have been carried out in the past, which includes diamond drilling, hydrological test work, metallurgical test work, resource modelling, and feasibility studies.

GWR Group chairman Gary Lyons said: “The GWR team has reviewed a number of projects to that will move the company into the “green sector”, and we believe the advanced Prospect Ridge Magnesite project provides an excellent opportunity to enter the “green” global magnesium market whilst enabling GWR to apply our experience in bulk commodity mining and tap into our network of offtake partners and end users.”

The project sits on the granted exploration licence, EL5/2016, which is spread over 51km2. It has two deposits in the form of Arthur River and Lyons River.

Jindalee Resources had announced an inferred mineral resource estimate of 25 million tonnes of magnesite for the Arthur River deposit, at a grading of 42.4% MgO at 40% MgO cut-off.

The Lyons River deposit is located 6.5km south along strike of the Arthur River deposit.

The magnesite project is located 55km west south-west from the Port of Burnie, which is said to be one of the major deep-water ports in Tasmania.

The project location is expected to help GWR Group leverage its expertise in bulk commodity production to explore opportunity for low capital expenditure for direct shipping ore (DSO) magnesite production and export.

Jindalee Resources had previously stated that it was actively pursuing partners to advance the Prospect Ridge magnesite project in order to sustain focus on core assets.

The company’s key assets include the McDermitt lithium project in the US and the Widgiemooltha nickel-gold-lithium project in Western Australia.

China’s Power Crisis Could Have A Massive Impact On Aluminum Supply
By Ag Metal Miner - Oct 24, 2021

A timely post by the Financial Times covers the threat to the global auto industry as a result of the power crisis in China limiting supplies of key components used across a range of industries. But specific to the post is the making of aluminum alloys. Almost 90% of the world’s magnesium production comes from China, the Financial Times reports. The Chinese government ordered roughly 35 of its 50 magnesium smelters to close until the end of the year due to power shortages.

The report quotes Barclays analyst Amos Fletcher, who said: “Thirty-five percent of downstream demand for magnesium is auto sheet — so if magnesium supply stops, the entire auto industry will potentially be forced to stop.”
