Engie décroche un contrat pour un mégaprojet d'hydrogène vert à Oman
Le groupe français est à la tête d'un consortium qui vient de se voir attribuer une concession de 47 ans. A partir de 2030, la production sera exportée vers la Corée du Sud.

L'hydrogène vert entre dans une phase plus concrète. Un consortium mené par Engie et l'aciériste sud-coréen Posco s'est vu attribuer une concession de 47 ans par les autorités d'Oman pour la réalisation d'un projet intégré de production d'hydrogène et d'ammoniac vert à partir d'énergies renouvelables.
Le projet sera situé dans le désert, sur un terrain d'une superficie de 340 kilomètres carrés, à proximité du port de Duqm, une ville côtière qui connaît un fort développement et à laquelle il sera relié par oléoduc.
Engie compte installer des éoliennes et des centrales solaires, afin de maximiser le taux d'utilisation des infrastructures et faire baisser les coûts de production. « Cela nous permettra de limiter l'intermittence de ces sources d'énergie. Nous pensons aussi utiliser des batteries », confie Frédéric Claux, directeur « flex generation » de la région Afrique, Moyen-Orient et Asie chez Engie.
Démarrage en 2030
La taille de ce projet le place parmi les plus importants au monde. Il prévoit jusqu'à 5 GW de nouvelles capacités solaires et éoliennes et devrait produire 200.000 tonnes d'hydrogène et 1,2 million de tonnes d'ammoniac par an.
Le projet Neom , annoncé par des sociétés marocaines, américaines et saoudiennes il y a un mois dans le nord de l'Arabie saoudite, par exemple, et qui s'est autoproclamé « plus grand projet d'hydrogène vert au monde », disposera de 4 GW de capacités de renouvelables et produira près de 220.000 tonnes d'hydrogène vert. Le montant de l'investissement à Oman n'a pas été dévoilé, mais le projet Neom prévoit, lui, 8,4 milliards de dollars d'investissements.
Ce dernier est toutefois plus avancé et prévoit le début de la production pour 2026. A Oman, Engie et ses partenaires vont mener une phase de développement et réaliser les études préliminaires pendant trois ans. Une fois l'éventuelle décision finale d'investissement prise, il y aura alors une phase de construction de trois à quatre ans. L'objectif est donc de démarrer la production en 2030.
Le Moyen-Orient, eldorado de l'hydrogène ?
La technologie est prometteuse . Elle permet de produire de l'hydrogène par électrolyse de l'eau, à partir d'énergies renouvelables dans des régions où les coûts de celles-ci sont bas, et de l'exporter vers les régions de consommation, soit sous forme liquide soit sous forme d'ammoniac. De nombreux industriels très consommateurs d'hydrogène, comme les sidérurgistes, les aciéristes ou les verriers, pourraient ainsi décarboner leurs activités - aujourd'hui, l'hydrogène qu'ils consomment est produit à 99 % à partir d'énergies fossiles.
Mais le marché n'a pas décollé car l'hydrogène vert reste plus cher que celui produit à partir de fossiles. Les industriels hésitent et les investissements tardent donc à se concrétiser. Or l'atout du projet d'Engie est qu'il a déjà des acheteurs. Son premier client sera Posco, qui souhaite décarboner ses activités. L'ammoniac vert produit sera exporté vers la Corée du Sud.
Ce n'est pas le seul projet d'Engie dans le domaine de l'hydrogène vert et de l'ammoniac. Outre un pilote en Australie, mené avec Yara, l'énergéticien discute d'autres possibilités en Arabie saoudite. Il pourrait aussi annoncer prochainement un projet aux Emirats arabes unis avec Masdar, de plus petite taille. Il s'est fixé l'objectif d'atteindre 4 GW de capacité d'hydrogène et 10 GW de batteries d'ici à 2030. Ce projet à Oman pourrait aussi servir les objectifs de la Corée du Sud, qui souhaite réduire son empreinte carbone de 40 % à la même date.
