Australia becomes world’s third-largest utility battery market
Australia has overtaken the United Kingdom to rank behind China and the United States in utility-scale battery capacity, with 14 GW/37 GWh of projects at or nearing financial close.

Australia is now the third-largest market worldwide for large-scale battery energy storage by capacity with 14 GW/37 GWh of battery energy storage capacity at or nearing financial close, reflecting capacity expected over the next two years. The pipeline of battery projects jumped 45 GW in 12 months, from 109 GW in August 2024 to 154 GW one year later.

Australia is also the first nation to surpass 1 GWh of utility battery capacity per million people, launching it into a league of its own, far ahead of China and the United States, each with less than 400 MWh per 1 million people.

These figures are reported in independent research company Rystad Energy’s “August 2025 Utility Battery Market Review – Australia.”

Rystad Australia Renewables Research Senior Analyst David Dixon told pv magazine utility battery energy storage systems (BESS) are a major renewable energy success story in Australia, but in reality, it should not be the third-largest market in the world.

Le Premier ministre australien Anthony Albanese doit rencontrer lundi à Washington le président américain Donald Trump et défendre la richesse de son pays en minerais essentiels, afin de desserrer l'étau chinois sur ce marché.

L'Australie est assise sur des gisements importants de lithium, de cobalt, de manganèse et même de terres rares, utilisées dans des produits cruciaux tels que les semi-conducteurs, les équipements militaires, les véhicules électriques et les éoliennes.

Le marché est actuellement archi-dominé par la Chine, accusée de profiter de sa position pour mettre la pression sur ses partenaires commerciaux, ce qui inquiète les Etats-Unis.

Donald Trump a brandi en octobre la menace de droits de douane supplémentaires de 100% pour la Chine en réponse à ses réductions d'exportations de ces terres rares, même s'il a ensuite assoupli son discours et que les deux parties se sont accordées sur de nouvelles négociations commerciales.

De son côté, Canberra craint l'influence grandissante de Pékin dans le Pacifique et cherche à se présenter devant Washington comme un allié de choix.

M. Albanese, qui s'attend à une rencontre "positive et constructive" avec M. Trump, a dévoilé en avril un plan de réserve stratégique de minerais essentiels destinée aux "partenaires clés" de l'Australie, tels que les Etats-Unis, pour contourner la Chine.

A Washington, le ministre australien de l'Economie, Jim Chalmers, a assuré vendredi que son pays avait "beaucoup à offrir" en la matière.

- Coopération militaire -

Canberra cherche par ailleurs à obtenir le soutien de Donald Trump à un pacte de 2021 visant à armer l'Australie en sous-marins US Virginia, des engins d'attaque nucléaires furtifs. La livraison d'au moins trois unités était prévue sous 15 ans, avec en prime un transfert de technologie, dans le cadre de leur alliance Aukus (qui comprend aussi le Royaume-Uni).

Mais Donald Trump a demandé en juin de passer en revue cet accord de coopération militaire pour s'assurer qu'il soit aligné avec sa politique défendant "l'Amérique d'abord".

Le sujet Aukus devrait être à l'ordre du jour lundi, tout comme les droits de douane, alors que l'Australie est frappée par une surtaxe de 10% sur ses biens.

"La Chine va probablement être le centre d'attention des discussions même si elle est rarement mentionnée publiquement: Aukus, les minerais essentiels, les technologies cyber et cruciales sont des sujets prioritaires, et concernent tous la Chine", selon Justin Bassi de l'Australian Strategic Policy Institute, un groupe de réflexion partiellement financé par le ministère de la Défense australien.

Ark Energy wins approval for 435 MW solar and storage project in Australia
Australia’s New South Wales government has approved Ark Energy’s AUD 1.2 billion ($780 million) hybrid project combining 435 MW of solar generation with a 475 MW/2,200 MWh battery system in the Northern Rivers region.

Queensland-headquarterd clean energy developer Ark Energy, which, along with the Sun Metals Zinc Refinery in Queensland, is a subsidiary of Korea Zinchas, has received planning approval from the New South Wales (NSW) government for the 435 MW solar component of its hybrid Richmond Valley project.

The solar farm will be co-located with a 475 MW/2,200 MWh long-duration, eight-hour lithium-iron phosphate battery energy storage system (BESS).

The AUD 1.2 billion solar farm and BESS hybrid is on the federal government’s national priority list, promises a capacity to power 175,000 homes and will be located in the Northern Rivers region, 255 km south of Brisbane and 728 km north of Sydney.

Ark Energy Chief Executive Officer Michael Choi said the project will play an important role in supporting the state’s energy transition.

L’IPP français Neoen a notifié à Tesla et à la société de génie civil UGL (membre du groupe CIMIC) le début de la construction de Muchea Battery en Australie. D’une capacité de 164 MW/905 MWh, Muchea Battery – c’est son nom – sera composée de 252 unités Tesla Megapack 2 XL. Elle sera connectée à la sous-station existante Muchea, opérée par Western Power, qui fait partie du réseau électrique de la côte ouest australienne, le South-West Interconnected System (SWIS).

Muchea est la première batterie longue durée de six heures de Neoen. Elle bénéficie du soutien du gouvernement australien dans le cadre du programme Capacity Investment Scheme. Lorsqu’elle sera opérationnelle, elle fournira des services essentiels garantissant la stabilité et la fiabilité du réseau pendant les pics de consommation en soirée en Western Australia. Située sur le territoire du peuple Whadjuk, dans le comté de Chittering, Muchea Battery devrait créer 70 emplois pendant sa phase de construction, ainsi que des opportunités économiques pour les entreprises locales. Elle apportera plus de 2 millions de dollars australiens de retombées aux communautés locales au cours des plus de 20 ans que durera son exploitation.

FRV brings 300 MW of solar online in Australia
Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) says its 300 MW Walla Walla project in New South Wales has entered full commercial operation under a 15-year power deal with Microsoft.

Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) Australia, owned by Saudi Abdul Latif Jameel Energy and Canadian pension fund Omers, has announced the completion of the 300 MW Walla Walla Solar Farm in the New South Wales Riverina region.

FRV said the project, its largest in Australia to date, has reached commercial operations stage. The milestone comes less than 12 months after the facility first commenced generation.

The Walla Walla Solar Farm is located near the community of the same name about 40 km north of Albury, in what FRV has described as a “strong and strategic part” of the grid.

The project is supported by a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with Microsoft with the facility expected to generate about 720 GWh of clean energy per year.

Robots speed installation of 500,000 panels at solar farm in Australia
Engie and US-based Luminous have tested autonomous robots at the 250 MW Goorambat East Solar Farm in the Australian state of Victoria, completing panel installation ahead of schedule.

The installation of almost 500,000 solar panels at the France-headquartered developer ENGIES‘s Goorambat East Solar Farm in Victoria will be completed by October 3, thanks in part to a collaboration with US robotics company Luminous, which has trialled its first LUMI S4 fleet during construction.

ENGIE Site Representative Justin Webb said commissioning has commenced, and first energization of the Goorambat East Solar Farm is expected by end of October 2025, with full operations on target for mid-2026.

“It will have a generating capacity of up to 250 MW, which is enough to power up to 105,000 average Victorian homes,” Webb said.

La plus puissante batterie au monde vient d’être mise en service en Australie

Pour se débarrasser de ses centrales à charbon, l’Australie doit stabiliser son vaste réseau électrique, et compte ainsi sur les batteries stationnaires (BESS). C’est dans ces conditions que vient d’être mise en service la batterie la plus puissante au monde.

L’Australie est décidée à décarboner son mix électrique, encore dominé par les énergies fossiles comme le charbon et le gaz. Mais compte tenu de sa situation géographique, le pays ne peut compter que sur lui-même pour faire face aux variations de production d’énergies renouvelables non pilotables. Pour cette raison, le pays mise beaucoup sur le déploiement de systèmes de stockage d’énergie, notamment par batterie (BESS) pour stabiliser le réseau. C’est dans ce contexte que vient d’être mise en service Waratah Super Battery, la BESS la plus puissante au monde. Composée de près de 2 592 batteries de type LFP, elle affiche une puissance record de 850 MW, pour une capacité de stockage de 1680 MWh.

Située non loin de Sydney, en Nouvelle-Galles du Sud, elle aura pour principal rôle de stabiliser le réseau australien à mesure que les centrales à charbon seront fermées. Elle a d’ailleurs été implantée sur l’ancienne centrale de Munmorah, qui affichait une puissance de 1400 MW. Elle est ainsi dotée d’une fonction de « Shock absorber ». Cela signifie qu’elle peut éviter les coupures en équilibrant le réseau lors de variations soudaines d’énergie. Celles-ci peuvent être provoquées par des surtensions, des feux de brousse ou encore des orages. En outre, elle est dotée d’un système de protection avancé qui surveille en temps réel 36 lignes à haute tension, et peut réagir en quelques secondes pour stabiliser le réseau en cas de défaillance.

La plus puissante, mais pas la plus grande en termes de capacité

La centrale australienne est ainsi la plus puissante au monde, mais elle n’a pas la plus grande capacité de stockage. En Australie, plusieurs projets d’extension de BESS devraient les inclure parmi les plus grands centres de stockage au monde. Pour l’heure, les plus grandes BESS se situent principalement aux USA. Le plus grand site de stockage, appelé Edwards & Sandborn, se situe en Californie et accompagne une vaste centrale photovoltaïque. Les quelque 1,9 million de panneaux solaires permettent d’alimenter environ 3,3 GWh de stockage d’énergie par batterie. Le site comprend plus de 120 000 batteries. En Europe, les projets d’envergure sont encore peu nombreux. On peut tout de même citer la Giga Storage Green Turtle, qui devrait avoir une puissance de 700 MW pour 2 800 MWh de capacité.

ACEnergy signs 3 GWh battery supply deal with CATL
Australian renewable energy developer ACEnergy has tapped China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) to supply 3 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Australia.

ACEnergy has struck a deal with CATL for the delivery of supply and integration services for three large-scale BESS projects in Australia.

The portfolio includes the Joel Joel and Little River projects being developed in Victoria, and the Yanco battery project planned for New South Wales (NSW), delivering 3 GWh of energy storage capacity.

Under the agreement, CATL will undertake the design, supply, testing, commissioning, and integration of the BESS, medium-voltage power stations (MVPS), inverters, power plant controllers (PPC), energy management systems (EMS), and data acquisition and monitoring systems (SCADA), along with full grid compliance.

ACLE Services will serve as the Balance of Plant (BoP) contractor, responsible for the civil and installation of all on-site construction activities.

The portfolio includes the 350 MW/700 MWh Joel Joel and Little River battery projects planned for Victoria, and the 250 MW/1,000 MWh Yanco battery projects in the Riverina region of NSW.

ACEnergy said all three projects are shovel-ready, with early works scheduled to commence later this year.

“The financial close process is now underway, with construction expected to begin in early 2026 and commercial operation planned for Q4 2027,” the company said in a statement.

AGL approves 2,000 MWh battery project with Fluence in Australia
Australian Gas Light Co. (AGL) has reached a final investment decision on its 500 MW/2,000 MWh Tomago battery energy storage system (BESS) in Australia. It has selected Fluence as the project’s delivery partner.

Energy group AGL has reached a final investment decision on the 500 MW/2,000 MWh Tomago BESS, which is located approximately 20 km northwest of Newcastle, New South Wales. It has appointed energy storage company Fluence to build the project.

Construction on the AUD 800 million ($514 million) battery energy storage system will begin in late 2025. It is expected to enter operation in late 2027 and have a 20-year lifespan.

Fortescue secures approval for 644 MW solar hub in Australia
Mining giant Fortescue has secured approval from the Western Australian government for a 644 MW solar farm that will help power its operations in the state’s Pilbara region.

Fortescue’s planned 644 MW Turner River Solar Hub has been cleared by Western Australia’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) but could still go through a review under the federal government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.

The Turner River Solar Hub, proposed for a 1,400-hectare site about 120 kilometres south of Port Hedland, comprises a 644 MW solar plant and a battery energy storage system, the capacity of which is yet to be published. The project also includes the construction of a 220 kV transmission line that will connect the solar hub to Fortescue’s existing integrated electricity network.

The Turner River Solar Hub would help power Fortescue’s mining operations in the Pilbara as part of its mission to achieve “real zero” Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, without carbon offsets.

Plans for the solar hub have been forwarded to both the state Environmental Protection Authority and to the federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water (DCCEEW).

ortescue has announced that construction is now underway on a 190 MW solar farm being built near its Cloudbreak mine site in Western Australia’s Pilbara as the company works to stop burning fossil fuels across its Australian iron ore operations by the decade’s end.

Fortescue is proposing to reach “real zero” at its mining operations which means burning no diesel or gas by 2030. The company’s decarbonisation strategy involves establishing and commissioning a number of solar and wind farms, transmission infrastructure, substations and battery installations to cater for the energy needs of its operations.

“The aim is to transition Fortescue from using diesel power and gas to renewable energy by 2030. To achieve the 2030 target of real zero, a total capacity of 1,500 MW of solar PV generation is required,” it said.

It is expected the 190 MW Cloudbreak plant, which is scheduled to commence operations in 2027, will reduce Fortescue’s annual diesel consumption by about 125 million litres.

The start of construction at the site comes just weeks after Fortescue lodged plans with Western Australia’s Environmental Protection Authority for the 644 MW Turner River Solar Hub south of Port Hedland and follows the commissioning of a 100 MW solar farm at North Star Junction near the Iron Bridge mine site last year.

Fortescue also sources solar power from the 60 MW Chichester Solar Farm built by Alinta and now owned by APA.

The company has also signed multiple multimillion-dollar contracts for electric equipment, including a new deal with Swedish manufacturer Epiroc for electric drilling rigs.

Under the new deal, Fortescue will purchase more than 50 autonomous electric drilling rigs to replace ageing diesel-powered equipment. Once operational, the electric fleet is expected eliminate about 35 million liters of diesel consumption annually.

Fortescue Metals Chief Executive Officer Dino Otranto said the deployment of the new electric drills will start immediately with the first of the drills set to be put into action at the Solomon mine in the coming days having arrived at the site earlier this month.

“To decarbonize, we’re aiming to swap out around 800 pieces of heavy mining equipment with zero emissions alternatives by the end of the decade, as well as deploy 2-3 GW of renewable energy and battery storage across the Pilbara,” Otranto said.

Dans son objectif d’atteindre 2 GW d’éolien en mer en 2032, 4 GW en 2035 et 9 GW en 2040, l’État du Victoria, au sud-est de l’Australie, s’apprête à lancer son premier appel d’offres. Le processus a été ouvert en mars avec un appel à manifestation d’intérêt (AMI) à destination des consortiums et entreprises déjà titulaires d’une autorisation du gouvernement fédéral pour conduire l’étude de faisabilité de leurs projets.

La capacité de l’ensemble des projets qui peuvent prétendre participer au futur appel d’offres éolien en mer de L’État du Victoria, au sud-est de l’Australie, est de 26 GW.
