Iberdrola obtains environmental permit for its first wind power repowering project in Spain

This is the environmental permit for the Molar de Molinar wind farm in Castilla – La Mancha. The company will upgrade two onshore wind farms in the region, which will go from 139 wind turbines to 22. The upgrade involves replacing the old wind turbines with more modern, more powerful ones equipped with the latest technology.

Iberdrola Spain has taken another step towards the energy transition and has obtained the environmental permit for its first repowering in Castilla-La Mancha – PE Molar del Molinar. In addition, it is continuing with the procedures to repower another onshore wind farm in Castilla La Mancha, which will allow the number of wind turbines installed in the community to be reduced by 117 and the energy production of the facilities to be increased by an average of 30%. The machines used in the repowering will have a unit power that is up to six times that of the first wind turbines installed in Spain more than two decades ago.

Generating a greater amount of wind energy and increasing the efficiency of the park. That is what repowering is about: maximising energy production and increasing the efficiency of wind farms. The process consists of replacing old turbines with more advanced and powerful ones. These will produce more energy than the previous ones, so fewer units will also be needed. With this action, Iberdrola Spain is getting closer to decarbonisation and, in particular, in Castilla-La Mancha, the parks that will benefit from the repowering are located in the province of Albacete. Commissioned in 2001, Molar de Molinar, with 49.5 MW, supplies 29,500 homes with clean energy, and will have 11 Vestas 4.5 MW wind turbines, 64 less than the current 75 660 kW turbines.

In turn, the Isabela wind farm, with 48 MW, will go from 64 750 kW wind turbines to 11 Vestas wind turbines: six 4.5 MW and another five 4.2 MW. In total, 26,000 families can consume emission-free energy thanks to this park.

GE Vernova has signed a framework agreement with Forestalia to deliver up to 693MW of onshore wind turbines across several future project sites in Spain.

Under the terms of the agreement, GE will install 110 of its 6.1-158 workhorse turbines for 16 prospective project sites throughout the Aragon region.

Among the total installation, 33 turbines will be 101m in hub height while the remaining 77 turbines will have 120.9m in hub height.

Forestalia president Fernando Samper said: “This deal will help us take a further step towards our goal of achieving 1.2 GW in operation in Forestalia’s own portfolio, under direct management, for the benefit of the socio-economic development of the territory hosting the projects, and also for a greater decarbonisation of the economy.”

GE will deploy the wind turbines in six phases near Zaragoza. The first phase is underway with 33 wind turbines to be installed at five wind farms.

All deliveries are anticipated to be completed by the end of next year.

Iberdrola will repower four onshore wind farms in Spain, which will reduce the number of installed wind turbines by almost 200 and increase the energy output of the facilities by an average of 30 %. The machines used in the repowering will have a unit power output up to six times that of the first wind turbines installed in Spain more than two decades ago.

Repowering involves replacing a wind farm’s old turbines with more powerful and efficient models using the latest technology. This produces more energy and has less impact on the landscape, making a significant contribution to efficiency and sustainability in energy generation.

With this action, these Iberdrola wind farms, some of which were commissioned in 1998, will switch from using 660 and 750 kW turbines to 4.5 MW turbines. In addition, they will generate clean energy to supply a population equivalent of about 110,000 homes per year.

The projects are expected to have an impact on the local economy through the use of local labour, and even more indirect opportunities during decommissioning and construction of the supply chain.

The initiative is part of the first call for grants under the Circular Repowering programme, awarded by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE).

Wind power installs 1,670 MW in Spain about to reach the milestone of 30 GW wind

Installed wind power in Spain reaches 29,813 MW with 1,670 new MW in 2022, doubling the figure installed the previous year, although at a rate below what is necessary to achieve the objectives of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC). The annual installation rate should incorporate 2,500 MW of wind energy per year.

• In total, in Spain there are 1,345 wind farms with 22,042 wind turbines. In 2022, 46 new wind farms have been commissioned with a total of 395 wind turbines.
• Existing wind farms generate 25% of all electricity in Spain. Yesterday, March 9, wind generated 50% of the electricity we consume. Today, March 10, it could reach 49%, which has made it easier for the daily spot price to be the lowest of the month with €42.71/MWh. Last year, thanks to wind power, electricity consumers saved 8,252 million euros.
• The 22,042 wind turbines in operation and their infrastructures occupy only 0.017% of the total Spanish area and are present in 13% of Spanish municipalities.

Spain is the second European country with the most installed wind power (12% of the total percentage), behind Germany with more than 66 GW. The third is the United Kingdom (29 GW), followed by France (21 GW), Sweden (15 GW) and Turkey (12 GW). All of them add up to two thirds of the total installed capacity in Europe.

Wind generation record in 2022 and consolidation as the first renewable technology in the electricity system

Based on Red Eléctrica de España (REE) estimates, wind power ended the year as the first renewable technology and reached a generation record for the year with more than 61,000 GWh.

The wind power installed today is 29,798 MW, with an increase of 1,659 new wind megawatts in 2022. More than 58% of the electrical power installed in Spain is already renewable, where in 2022 4.6 new GW have been installed renewable.

2022 highlights the wind sector as a fundamental piece for the progress of our economy and society where it already adds 32,000 jobs, maintains 100% of the value chain with more than 250 industrial centers, with a contribution to GDP of 0.49% and has achieved that Spanish citizens save more than 2,000 million euros in the price of light until October. And we continue to lead the development of technology, being the 6th country in the world in wind power patents and the 1st in the development of floating offshore wind prototypes.
The Wind Business Association is the voice of the wind sector in Spain and defends its interests. With more than 300 associated companies, it represents more than 90% of the sector in the country, which includes developers, manufacturers of wind turbines and components, national and regional associations, organizations linked to the sector, consultants, lawyers, and financial and insurance entities, among others.

Enel Green Power launches its largest wind farm in Spain

The 180 MW “Tico Wind” plant, placed in Villar de los Navarros, Aragón region, involved an investment of 181 million euros.

Enel Green Power España (EGPE) connected the 180 MW wind farm “Tico Wind” to the grid, marking the official launch of its largest wind farm in Spain. The facility located in the town of Villar de los Navarros, province of Zaragoza, involved an investment amounting to 181 million euros.

The project, whose construction began in May 2021, included training courses on panel assembly and maintenance and operation of solar plants as part of a plan to create shared value in the local communities where it operates. In Spain, the company has trained more than 2,100 people in renewal works, enabling their entry into a booming labor market.

La croissance de l’eolien espagnol est impressionnante.

Pas tellement, au rythme de 2021 il faudrait 33 ans (28,138 / 842.6 ) pour doubler la production d'electricite eolienne.
Duree qui est superieure a la longevite d'une eolienne : pedaler plus vite pour avancer moins vite !

Wind energy, the first electricity generation technology in Spain with more than 23% of production

The main source of electricity generation in Spain is wind energy with more than 23% of total production in 2021 (in 2020 it reached 21.9% and in 2019 it was 20.8%).

The wind power installed in Spain is over 28,000 MW. In our country, wind energy is present in practically all the autonomous communities, except Madrid, Ceuta and Melilla.

Spain has more than 1,260 wind farms and 250 industrial centers, employing more than 27,600 professionals and with a contribution to the Spanish GDP in 2020 of 3,106.4 million euros.

Wind energy records in 2021

2021 has been a year of important milestones for wind energy in Spain. The most outstanding is that wind power is the main source of electricity generation in Spain. The closing figures for 2021 highlight that wind technology has registered more than 23% of the total production in our country, thus leading the national generation mix. Furthermore, wind power is also the technology in the Spanish energy system with the highest installed power (28,073 MW, provisional data from REE).

Spain issues plan for up to 3 GW offshore wind energy by 2030

Spain approved its first Offshore Wind Roadmap last week. It aims to kickstart the deployment of offshore wind with a view to having up to 3 GW operating by 2030. Given Spain’s geography it’ll all be floating offshore wind. Ports and shipyards across Spain already play a key role in the supply chain for offshore wind in the rest of Europe. The new Roadmap will stimulate the further development of Spain’s floating wind supply chain. The celebration of the WindEurope annual event 2022 in Bilbao on 5-7 April will be a perfect opportunity to focus on this.

Spain is already the second most important country in Europe for onshore wind, with 27 GW of installed capacity. It has built up a major wind industry on the back of this. Wind contributes more than €3bn to Spain’s GDP and provides more than 27,500 jobs. Spain’s exports of wind energy technology are worth more than its exports of wine.

Now Spain is going to embrace offshore wind as well. The Spanish Government has approved an Offshore Wind Roadmap which aims to install up to 3 GW of floating offshore wind in Spanish waters by 2030. To help achieve this the Spanish Government has pledged to invest at least €200m in research and innovation. The Roadmap also aims to further enhance the circularity of offshore wind and to make it more compatible with other maritime activities.
