Located more than 130km off the North East coast of England, the Dogger Bank project is being developed in three 1.2GW phases, namely Dogger Bank A, B, and C and the project will feature 277 offshore turbines

Image

Saipem has installed the second unmanned high voltage direct current (HVDC) offshore substation platform at the 3.6GW Dogger Bank offshore wind project located in the UK North Sea.

Measuring 75m in length, 45m in width, and 39m in height, the platform employs a four-legged steel jacket foundation structure designed and fabricated by Saipem, installed in water depths of around 28m.

Its installation milestone marks the completion of the second platform out of three planned for deployment at the offshore wind facility, with each being supplied by Aibel.

Located more than 130km off the North East coast of England, the Dogger Bank project is being developed in three 1.2GW phases, namely Dogger Bank A, B, and C. Overall, the project will feature 277 offshore turbines.

The offshore wind project is being executed as a joint venture (JV) between Equinor (40%), SSE Renewables (40%), and Vårgrønn (20%), which in turn is owned by Eni Plenitude and Hitec Vision.

By leveraging its Saipem 7000 vessel, Saipem installed the platform 130km from the UK coastline at Dogger Bank B.

The unmanned HVDC offshore substation platform houses a Hitachi Energy HVDC system developed to transmit power more efficiently than traditional AC systems.

It will receive 1.2GW of AC power produced by the 95 offshore wind turbines of Dogger Bank B. Subsequently, the power will be converted to DC for transmission to an onshore converter station near Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

The first platform of the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm was deployed at the Dogger Bank A in April 2023. All three platforms will be remotely controlled from shore and will incorporate a streamlined design aimed at reducing weight by 70% per MW compared to previous platform designs.

Prysmian wins €1.9bn contract for 2GW Eastern Green Link 2 project

By NS Energy Staff Writer 28 Feb 2024

Under the deal, the Italian cable solutions provider Prysmian Group will deliver a major high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system for the Eastern Green Link 2 electricity transmission project between Peterhead in Scotland and Drax in England

Cable solutions provider Prysmian Group has finalised the contract worth €1.9bn for the 2GW Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) subsea electricity superhighway project between Scotland and England.

The contract has been awarded by Eastern Green Link 2 Limited, a joint venture (JV) between SSEN Transmission and UK electricity transmission network owners National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET).

Under the deal, the Italian cable solutions provider will deliver a major high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system for the electricity transmission project.

The scope of works includes designing, manufacturing, installation, testing and commissioning of the required HVDC cable system.

The contract award follows the earlier selection of Prysmian Group as the exclusive preferred bidder in May 2023.

A later commitment to guarantee the Italian company’s continued capacity availability for the Eastern Green Link 2 project was made in June 2023.

The subsea electricity superhighway project involves the installation of a 525kV high voltage direct current (HVDC) underwater transmission cable that will be laid from Peterhead in Scotland to Drax in England.

Once operational, the nearly 436km long Eastern Green Link 2 project is expected to significantly increase the UK’s capacity to deliver clean energy for approximately two million households in the UK.

The electricity transmission project is scheduled to be operational in 2029.

Prysmian Group Transmission BU executive vice president Hakan Ozmen said: “We are very proud to have the opportunity to play our role in the development of such a strategic infrastructure for UK, by making available our state-of-the-art cable technology.

“Once completed, the electrical ‘superhighway’ cable link will unlock the rich renewable energy capacity of Scotland and significantly increase the UK’s capacity to deliver clean energy for around two million homes in the UK.”

Earlier this month, Prysmian Group finalised three contracts worth about €5bn with Amprion for the BalWin1 and BalWin2 offshore grid connection systems and the DC34 underground cable project in Germany.

TotalEnergies Commissions Its Biggest Offshore Wind Farm

October 17, 2023 evwind

TotalEnergies and its partner SSE Renewables are pleased to announce that their Seagreen offshore wind farm is now fully operational and running at its design capacity of 1,075 MW.

Seagreen is a joint venture between TotalEnergies (51%) and SSE Renewables (49%). It is located in the North Sea, some 27 km off the coast of Angus. It is TotalEnergies’ biggest operational offshore wind farm worldwide and the world’s deepest fixed bottom wind farm, with its foundation reaching nearly 60 meters below sea level.

The project, which began construction in June 2020, has been completed in around 3 years for a global investment of around $4 billion, globally in line with the expected capex. The development and construction were led, with the support of TotalEnergies, by SSE which will now operate the offshore wind farm for its expected 25-year lifetime.

The 1,075 MW offshore wind farm has the capacity to generate around 5 terawatt hours (TWh), or enough renewable electricity to power almost 1.6 million homes annually, equivalent to two-thirds of all Scottish homes. Seagreen will also prevent the emission of over 2 million tons of CO2 from fossil fuel electricity generation every year.

Consistently with its business model, TotalEnergies will commercialize, through Seagreen, its share of production through a mix of a long-term contract at guaranteed price, including a 15-year CfD (Contract for Difference) awarded by the UK Government, and a 15-year private CfD with the SSE Group, and short-term sales on the wholesale market.

« I am very pleased to see Seagreen generating at full power, making it TotalEnergies’ biggest offshore wind farm worldwide. This 1 GW project is a new step in delivering our strategy of building a world-class, cost-competitive portfolio of renewable energy to deliver clean, reliable and affordable power to our customers. It will positively contribute to achieving our Integrated Power 12% profitability target and our objective of reaching more than 100 TWh of power generation by 2030, » said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.
