Glencore redémarre le raffinage de Zinc à la fonderie de Nordenham en Allemagne qui avait été arrêtée en 2022à cause du prix du gaz trop élevé.
Glencore’s Nordenham zinc smelter starts ramping up output

Reuters | March 15, 2024

Commodity trader and miner Glencore last month started ramping up production at its Nordenham zinc smelter, which has been on care and maintenance for more than a year, a source with knowledge of the matter said.

Nordenham in Germany halted production in 2022 along with some other smelters in Europe producing energy-intensive zinc and aluminum because of surging power prices after Russia invaded Ukraine.

The source did not say how much was currently being produced or when the smelter would be at full capacity.

The smelter produces about 165,000 tonnes of zinc and zinc alloys per year, its website says.

Glencore bought the Nordenham smelter after it filed for insolvency in May 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit demand for the metal used to galvanize steel.

Prices of zinc on the London Metal Exchange (LME) at around $2,570 a metric ton are up more than 10% since hitting a seven-month low at $2,278 on February 12.

South32 to invest $2.16bn in Hermosa project in Southern Arizona

By NS Energy Staff Writer 15 Feb 2024

Located in a historic mining district in the Patagonia Mountains of Southern Arizona, Hermosa is the only US mining project that can produce two federally designated critical minerals, zinc, and manganese, and can be one of the world’s largest zinc producers

Australia-based mining and metals company South32 has announced $2.16bn funding to develop the zinc-lead-silver deposit at its Hermosa project site in Southern Arizona.

Hermosa project is a polymetallic development comprised of a zinc-lead-silver sulfide deposit, located in a historic mining district in the Patagonia Mountains of Southern Arizona.

It is a battery-grade manganese deposit and an extensive, highly prospective land package with the potential for further polymetallic and copper mineralisation.

Hermosa is the only US mining project that can produce two federally designated critical minerals, zinc, and manganese, and can be one of the world’s largest zinc producers.

Also, it is the first critical minerals mining project added to the US FAST-41 permitting process.

South32’s funding represents the largest private investment in Southern Arizona and the largest investment in the local Santa Cruz County economy to date.

It will be used to fund the construction of key infrastructure projects needed to implement the design and works required to begin operations around the zinc deposit.

The infrastructure projects include water management systems, power, site facilities, underground shaft sinking, and initial underground development, among others.

Once completed, the infrastructure would support future potential development of other deposits at the site, including the battery-grade manganese deposit.

South32 chief executive officer Graham Kerr said: “Today’s investment decision represents a major milestone for our business and aligns with our strategy to reshape our portfolio toward commodities critical to a low-carbon future.

“Development of the zinc deposit is the first phase of a regional scale opportunity at Hermosa, with ongoing activities to unlock additional value from the manganese deposit.”

Hermosa project president Pat Risner said: “With the largest private investment in Southern Arizona’s history, South32’s Hermosa project will strengthen the domestic supply of critical minerals needed for clean energy technologies and national defence, reducing America’s reliance on foreign countries and transforming the local economy.”

Zinc is used in renewable energy battery storage, wind turbines and electric vehicles, as a key component in the process to galvanise steel used needed for infrastructure projects.

The feasibility study for Hermosa’s zinc-lead-silver deposit showed an expected initial operating life for the mine of around 28 years with potential for further exploration upside.

Once operational, the project with separate zinc and manganese deposits would help transform and grow the local economy in the US.

It will create up to 900 good-paying jobs and support another 1,600 indirect and induced jobs across Santa Cruz County and 3,100 indirect and induced jobs statewide.

The zinc-lead-silver project will $1.4bn to Arizona’s economy each year, with $999m going directly into Santa Cruz County’s economy.

Ivanhoe Mines and Gécamines, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)’s state-owned mining company, have signed the new joint venture (JV) agreement to resume operations at the Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine in the DRC.

Under the term sheet, Kipushi Holding will transfer an additional 6% of the share capital in Kipushi Corporation (KICO) to Gécamines. This will increase Gécamines’ ownership in Kipushi Holding from 32% to 38%.

KICO is a JV between Ivanhoe Mines’ fully owned subsidiary Kipushi Holding and Gécamines. It operates the Kipushi mine.

The transaction also involves the transfer of an additional 5% share capital in KICO from Kipushi Holding to Gécamines from 25 January 2027. This will enable Gécamines to increase its ownership to 43%.

The term sheet between the parties comes after the agreement signed in February 2022 to redevelop the Kipushi zinc mine.

Gécamines chairman Guy-Robert Lukama Nkunzi said: “The restart of operations of a mine as emblematic as Kipushi, after 30 years of inactivity, is a strong signal of the desire and commitment of Gécamines, and its partner Ivanhoe Mines, to contribute to the DRC’s economic development, in accordance with the vision outlined by His Excellency, the President of the Republic Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo.”

According to Ivanhoe Mines, the new 800,000-tonne-per-annum concentrator is 79% complete and is ahead of schedule for first production in Q2 2024.

The new Kipushi concentrator includes dense media separation, milling and a flotation circuit, and is expected to produce more than 250,000 tonnes of zinc per annum over the first five years of production.

Ivanhoe Mines stated that the underground development at the Kipushi zinc mine is tracking ahead of schedule for the first production.

Ivanhoe Mines founder and executive co-chairman Robert Friedland said: “The project is advancing ahead of schedule, in line with our track record of operational excellence.

“Kipushi’s restart follows the timely and cost-effective delivery of Phases 1 and 2 at the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex, with Phase 3 now also ahead of schedule for first production in the third quarter of 2024.”

Nevada Zinc partners with BelZinc to produce zinc oxide
BelZinc will transfer its zinc processing technology in exchange for a 10.8% stake in Nevada Zinc.

August 11, 2023

Canada-based development stage company Nevada Zinc has reached a strategic alliance with BelZinc, a Belgian zinc producer.

Through the partnership, Nevada Zinc will use BelZinc’s zinc processing technology to produce high-grade zinc oxide from its Lone Mountain mine, a non-sulphide zinc project in Nevada, US.

BelZinc has developed a proprietary zinc processing technology, which can produce high-grade zinc oxide from non-sulphide zinc ore.

Nevada Zinc stated that producing high-grade zinc and supplying it to zinc smelters can help in reducing the emissions released during smelting operations.

The company used BelZinc’s technology to produce zinc oxide. Samples sent to European smelters are claimed to have returned positive results.

In exchange for offering access to its zinc oxide production technology, Nevada Zinc has granted BelZinc a right of first refusal to participate in all future projects of BelZinc in North America.

It will also receive 12 million Nevada Zinc shares, which equates to a 10.8% interest. Furthermore, BelZinc will receive a fixed and variable licensing fee per tonne of zinc oxide produced using the technology.

Nevada Zinc CEO Mike Wilson said: “The zinc oxide market is significantly larger when compared to the size of the zinc sulphate micronutrient market which the company has been focused on since 2021. Nevada Zinc, through its right of first refusal, will have the opportunity to participate in a meaningful way as BelZinc sets out to expand its footprint in North America.

“The strategic plan of both companies is to work very closely together in order to release a PEA in Q4 of this year and to complete a pre-feasibility study in late 2024. As part of the pre-feasibility work we plan to begin a definition and exploratory drill program at Lone Mountain in Q1 2024.”

More zinc mine suspensions loom if prices stay below $2,400/t

Reuters | June 23, 2023

Weak demand from the construction industry has pushed zinc prices to levels which leave some miners with little or no profit and a prolonged period below $2,400 a metric ton is likely to trigger output cuts.

Used for galvanizing steel, zinc on the London Metal Exchange touched $2,215 a ton on May 25, its lowest since July 2020. It has since recovered to around $2,400 partly due to a decision by Sweden’s Boliden to put its cash-flow-negative Tara mine in Ireland under maintenance.

“If prices go back below $2,400 a ton for a sustained period then we could see more closures,” said Macquarie analyst Alice Fox.

Suspension of Tara, Europe’s largest zinc mine, alone will not impact the supply and demand balance for refined zinc as there is large amount of concentrate left over from last year, analysts said.

Analysts at consultancy CRU expect Tara to be closed for three months.

CRU also estimates there are currently 22 zinc mines outside China – including Tara – with mining expenses known as all-in-sustaining costs higher than $2,400 per ton.

China is the world’s largest zinc mining country.

“We expect zinc price to average $2,750 per tonne in the third quarter before retreating again in the fourth quarter, so more mine closures cannot be ruled out,” CRU said.

Zinc has been suffering from weak demand from the construction sector, which accounts for 55% of zinc demand, and is particularly impacting Europe.

The International Lead and Zinc Study Group estimates the surplus in the zinc market at 137,000 metric tons in January-April.

In China, where CRU expects demand to rise by 2.1% in 2023, May imports of both refined zinc and zinc concentrates showed solid year-on-year growth.

But new construction starts in China, the world’s largest consumer of industrial metals such as zinc, are still sliding.

However, support comes from low zinc inventories in warehouses monitored by the Shanghai Futures Exchange, though stocks in LME approved warehouses, located mostly in Asia, are still relatively high.

Zinc price could hit $2,000/t by 2025 on ballooning surplus

Reuters | May 18, 2023

Refined zinc prices are expected to be on a downward trend until 2025, as weak demand growth failed to match with a surge in production, analysts said.

“Demand for zinc will be relatively weak in coming years while zinc mining and refined output are still growing. This will create pressure on zinc prices,” said Dina Yu, an analyst at consultancy CRU Group.

Zinc prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME) could fall to $3,050 a tonne this year, from $3,442 a tonne in 2022, and will likely decline further to $2,525 in 2024 and $2,000 in 2025, according to CRU Group.

Global refined zinc output is expected to increase by almost 1.3 million tonnes over the coming five years, with an increase of 800,000 tonnes in ex-China and around half a million tonnes in China, said Yu.

Demand of refined zinc globally this year is expected to grow 2.7% year-on-year, flipping from a sharp fall in 2022 of 4.1%, due to recovery in China and Europe, but not enough to meet with a 3.4% growth in supply, CRU data showed.

In China, the world’s top zinc consumer, the refined zinc market could see a surplus of 245,000 tonnes this year and is likely to stay in surplus in 2024 and 2025, according to industry data provider SMM.

“Zinc smelters in China are (running) at almost 100% operation rate. They are enjoying the profit and cheap raw materials,” said Yanchen Wang, managing director at SMM UK.

In the rest of the world, the surplus of refined zinc expected this year is even higher than in China, at 381,000 tonnes, before easing to 150,000 tonnes in 2024 and 50,000 tonnes in 2025, SMM data showed.

Terramin secures permit for zinc mine in Algeria
This project has resources of 68.6 million tonnes at 4.6% zinc and 1.2% lead at a cut-off grade of 2.5% zinc equivalent.

May 19, 2023

The Algerian mining regulator has awarded a mining permit for the Tala Hamza zinc project to mining company Terramin Australia.

The issue of the permit signifies that the project has satisfied all of the country’s regulatory, financial and environmental requirements. The project can now proceed towards development.

The permit will now enable mining and processing operations of two million metric tonnes per annum (mtpa) of ore instead of the 1.3 mtpa anticipated in the 2018 feasibility study.

The increased volume indicates enhanced returns during the expected mine life of the project, which exceeds 20 years.

The permit also encompasses all areas of land needed for the mine’s operation, including mining, processing, haul roads, ore stockpiles, tailings, dams, concrete handling and maintenance and administration.

Terramin Australia executive chairman Bruce Sheng said: “Terramin is exceptionally delighted to have received the mining permit for Tala Hamza. The mining permit is the most critical factor in any new project development and is the most important achievement towards project implementation.

“Having this mining permit finalised and issued by the Algerian mining regulator has been an enormous accomplishment for the entire team at Terramin including our board, management and all staff who have been associated with this major world-class project. I would like to personally thank all those involved.

“On behalf of the Terramin board and management team, we would like to thank the Algerian regulators for their cooperation and support throughout this entire process and our Algerian partners for the solid business relationship we have developed and their continued willingness of working closely with us to achieve this incredible milestone.”

The Tala Hamza zinc project is located near the Mediterranean Sea, 15km from Béjaia, Algeria.

It is owned by Western Mediterranean Zinc, a joint venture between Terramin and Enterprise Nationale des Produits Miniers Non-Ferreux et des Substances Utiles Spa.

This project has resources of 68.6 million tonnes at 4.6% zinc and 1.2% lead at a cut-off grade of 2.5% zinc equivalent.

The deposit is located within the 125km² Oued Amizour permit and has several potential additional prospects for lead-zinc and copper.

Béjaia will offer extensive infrastructure such as an international airport and deep water port for the zinc project. The location is also beneficial in terms of grid power, water and proximity to European zinc smelters.

Greece approves environmental study for Rockfire’s Molaoi project
The firm will undertake resource definition and step-out drilling work at the Molaoi project during the next five years.

April 21, 2023

Rockfire Resources has secured an environmental study permit from the Greek Government for the Molaoi zinc, lead and silver project.

With the application approved, Rockfire will undertake resource definition and step-out drilling work at the project during the next five years.

In a press statement, Rockfire said: “The granting of this permit provides authority for Rockfire to drill for the next five years, although the company intends to expedite this drilling, and to complete as much drilling as possible in 2023.”

Discovered the Molaoi in 1938, the Greek Government drilled 179 diamond drill holes at the project throughout the 1980s.

The Molaoi project is owned 100% by Hellenic Minerals IKE, a Greek-registered company and a 100% subsidiary of Rockfire.

In March 2022, Hellenic was awarded a 30-year exploration and mining licence for the Molaoi project by the Greek Government.

Rockfire CEO David Price said: “The Greek Government has previously drilled 179 exploration holes at Molaoi, so Rockfire is not focused on any further exploration. Our planned drilling for the remainder of 2023 is designed to upgrade the resource from ‘inferred’ to the ‘measured and indicated’ categories.

“Once this milestone is achieved, the company will move as quickly as possible to complete a feasibility study. We remain on track to achieve this milestone and the granting of this permit is a very important step in our development plans. The market will continue to be informed of progress at Molaoi, including drilling assay results as they are received.”

According to JORC resource estimates, the Molaoi deposit holds 210,000t of zinc, 39,000t of lead and 3.5 million ounces of silver, using a 4% Zn cut off.

Nexa expands zinc resource, mine life of Aripuanã in Brazil

Colin McClelland | March 16, 2023

South America-focused Nexa Resources (NYSE: NEXA) expanded the resource at its Aripuanã zinc and copper mine in Mato Grosso state, Brazil by enough to extend the operation’s life by three years.

Nexa, one of the five largest metallic zinc producers globally, added 8.3 million tonnes of probable mineral reserves after more than 34,000 metres of infill drilling last year, the company said in a filing to the NYSE on Thursday. It increases the mine’s life to 14 years.

The underground mine, about 2,000 km northwest of the capital Brasilia, is currently ramping up and expected to hit full plant capacity in the second half of this year, Nexa said. Average annual production is forecast at 70,000 tonnes of zinc, 24,000 tonnes of lead, 4,000 tonnes of copper, 1.8 million oz. of silver and 14,500 oz. of gold.

Aripuanã consists of three main mineralized zones – Arex, Link and Ambrex. Additional targets include Massaranduba, Boroca and Mocoto to the southeast and Babaçu and Arpa to the northwest.

Ignacio Rosado, CEO of Nexa Resources, said the increase in Aripuanã’s reserves and its mine life extension reinforces Nexa’s belief that it will be a long-life mine.

“In 2023, we plan to continue to advance with our drill program in Babaçu and at the Link and Ambrex mineralization gap,” Rosado said in a news release. “We expect to expand the Babaçu deposit to the northwest, potentially further increasing mineral resources.”

Aripuanã’s proven and probable mineral reserves are estimated at 30.1 million tonnes grading at 3.4% zinc, 1.3% lead, 0.2% copper, 32.1 grams silver per tonne and 0.23 grams gold. Contained metal is estimated at 1 million tonnes zinc, 377,700 tonnes lead, 50,400 tonnes copper, 3.1 million oz. silver and 220,000 oz. gold.

It’s a 38% increase from 21.8 million tonnes grading at 3.6% zinc, 1.4% lead, 0.2% copper, 33.5 grams silver per tonne and 0.30 grams gold as of the end of 2021, Nexa said.

The company plans 15,600 metres of diamond drilling this year, including 4,400 meters to extend the Babaçu deposit and to test the mineralization gap between Link and Ambrex. An additional 11,200 meters of infill drilling is aimed at reclassifying mineral resources at Babaçu to mineral reserves and potentially to further expand the life of the mine.

Babaçu assay results received this year and not included in the resources update show high-grade massive stratabound mineralization, the company said. Hole BRAPD000151 cut 11.7 metres grading 8.7% zinc, 4% lead, 0.1% copper, 118.9 grams silver per tonne and 0.2 grams gold.

Nexa owns and operates six underground mines — three in the central Andes of Peru, two in Brazil’s state of Minas Gerais, and Aripuanã in Mato Grosso.
