Greenland Resources Signs a Letter of Intent With Outokumpu to Strengthen Their Future Supply Chain of Low-Emission High-Quality Molybdenum
Greenland Resources is a Canadian public company focused on the development of its 100% owned world-class Climax type pure molybdenum deposit located in central east Greenland

By NS Energy Staff Writer 09 Oct 2023

Greenland Resources Inc. (NEO: MOLY | FSE: M0LY) (“Greenland Resources” or the “Company”) is pleased to announce the Company has signed a letter of intent (“LOI”) with Outokumpu Europe Oy (“Outokumpu”) for the supply of a significant amount of molybdenum from the Malmbjerg molybdenum project (the “Project”). Outokumpu is a major global stainless steel producer and one of the largest molybdenum consumers worldwide and has a long history as a mining company before focusing on stainless steel. Greenland Resources sees a very good fit on Outokumpu and looks forward to continuing negotiations on further detailed cooperation. A joint press release from Outokumpu can be found in their website at www.outokumpu.com.

Outokumpu, the global leader in sustainable stainless steel, has been exploring opportunities to secure sustainable molybdenum supplies from western suppliers – as a part of its long-term strategy for value-chain integration. Molybdenum is a critical and strategically important raw material for Outokumpu’s stainless steel production. Greenland Resources has therefore signed an LOI with Outokumpu, with the goal of providing molybdenum oxide and carbon-free briquettes from the Project.

Greenland Resources is developing one of the highest grade molybdenum deposits in the world with an ore body that contains very few deleterious elements, in a high ESG standard jurisdiction part of Denmark, some 2,300 km west of Helsinki. The Project is supported by European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) RawMaterials and European Raw Material Alliance (ERMA), a body of the European Union, as per their press release of September 23, 2023. The Project is an open-pit molybdenum mine that could supply around 25% of the European molybdenum demand. Europe is the second largest molybdenum user worldwide and has no production of its own. The Project is planned to have a low footprint due to modularized infrastructure, low CO2 emissions, low aquatic disturbance and clean contained tailings. The transport of 35,000 tonnes of ore per day uses a gravity based aerial rope conveyor that requires no energy and therefore generates no carbon emissions and generates electricity from braking. Further information on the environmentally friendly mine design of the Project can be viewed in this video on the project.

“The carbon footprint of Outokumpu’s stainless steel is already the lowest in the industry. It is a competitive advantage for us, and we want to drive green transition and further decarbonize our product – and the whole industry. Cooperation within our value chain allows us to reduce our supply chain emissions, and at the same time we also want to ensure access to the most sustainable molybdenum suppliers like the Canadian company Greenland Resources. Long-term cooperation with Greenland Resources could also provide us an access to a stable supply of molybdenum and protect us from volatile market pricing and supply. We are excited about the collaboration and are looking forward to continue the good dialogue aiming at a binding long-term cooperation,” says Marc-Simon Schaar, Chief Procurement Officer at Outokumpu.

“We plan to extract quality molybdenum with high ESG standards from Greenland, a jurisdiction that is not only part of the kingdom of Denmark but has very similar living standards as Finland. The Malmbjerg primary molybdenum deposit is one of the richest and cleanest of its kind. The resulting ferroalloys are perfectly suited to be used in high quality steels produced by Outokumpu. Outokumpu will be able to source a long-term reliable supply of molybdenum oxide and carbon-free briquettes, know from where every single pound of molybdenum is being extracted, and can follow the high ESG standards over the 20-year mine life. Adding to EU circularity, the extraction will be done in an associate EU country, the processing of the concentrate and steel production will also be done in the EU; and a significant part of the mining equipment, team and funding will be EU sourced,” says Greenland Resources Chairman Dr Ruben Shiffman.

Molybdenum price in Europe hits record high

Staff Writer | January 18, 2023

The copper market took a breather on Wednesday after eight straight days of gains, but not before touching a fresh six month high of $4.39 a pound ($9,680 a tonne) in early trade, bringing its gains YTD to 12%.

Copper stocks shot out of the gate in 2023 on optimism over a post-covid recovery in China, which consumes more than half the world’s copper.

Copper producers’ margins are also buoyed by a surge in the price of molybdenum, often produced as a byproduct of porphyry copper mines. Global moly production of 300,000 tonnes per year is primarily destined for the steel industry.

Argus reports that European prices for moly are now at the highest levels since the company launched its in-warehouse Rotterdam assessment in 2019 as supply from China slows. China produces over 40% of the world’s moly. Chinese ferro-molybdenum hit 15-year highs recently.

“There is zero availability on the ground and some people actually flew some material from China,” a trader in Europe told Argus.

“Global molybdenum consumption is expected to continue increasing over the next decade as demand for molybdenum-containing steels grows. But production has been squeezed by lower molybdenum content in mined ores seams and a lack of new molybdenum projects to meet demand,” according to Argus analysis.

China’s grip on the market is unlikely to relax any time soon. Zijin Mining (SHA:601899, HKG:2899), which at around 500,000 tonnes per annum is the world’s ninth-largest copper producer, last year acquired the world’s largest primary molybdenum-only mine with annual output of 27,200 tonnes per year.

In Canada, Stuhini Exploration (TSX-V: STU) is advancing the Ruby Creek molybdenum project in the far north of British Columbia. According to the company’s March 2022 resource estimates Ruby Creek contains just over 196,000 tonnes of moly alongside the property’s gold and silver ore.

Forte poussée du prix du Molybdène :
Surging molybdenum price adds weight to new year rally for copper producers

Frik Els | January 10, 2023

Copper prices started the new year with a bang – touching fresh six-month highs on Tuesday. Copper for delivery in March touched $4.0795 per pound or just shy of $9,000 a tonne, bringing gains for the first week of 2023 to over 8%.

Measured from last year’s summer lows the bellwether metal is up nearly 30% on optimism over a post-covid recovery in China, which consumes more than half the world’s copper, and long-term demand growth spurred by the energy transition.

In a new note, BMO Capital Markets points out molybdenum has been one of the strongest base metal performers in the recent past with the latest spot assessments at ~$32 per pound or $70,500 per tonne – more than 50% higher than November-end levels.

Molybdenum is often produced as a byproduct of porphyry copper mines with global production worldwide of 300,000 tonnes primarily destined for the steel industry.

BMO says with demand conditions still relatively muted due to softness on global steel markets output, the price surge for molybdenum is mainly driven by supply issues:

“With the ongoing output challenges at Codelco, responsible for ~50% of Chilean molybdenum supply, Chilean output remains well below the five-year average, though November did mark a return to y/y growth.

“Meanwhile, Peru’s output is also down y/y, while other key primary producers such as China and the U.S. are also facing production headwinds.”

BMO says the the gains in molybdenum should help by-product credits at many copper operations, reducing headline costs and profits at producers.

Zijin Mining to Acquire World’s Largest Molybdenum-only Mine

By NS Energy Staff Writer 27 Oct 2022

The Shapinggou Molybdenum Mine is situated in Jinzhai County, an old revolutionary base deep in the Dabie Mountains. The deposit was discovered only at the beginning of this century.

Zijin Mining entered into an agreement with Anhui Jinsha Molybdenum Co., Ltd. to acquire an 84% interest in the company for RMB 5.91 billion, which will see Zijin control the world’s largest molybdenum-only deposit.

The deal was secured through public tendering at the Anhui Assets and Equity Exchange. Located in Jinzhai County, Anhui, China, the Shapinggou Molybdenum Mine is a world-class, ultra-large porphyry molybdenum deposit with 2,337,800 tonnes of resources within the area covered by the exploration license.

The project is designed to mill 10 million tonnes of ore and produce 27,200 tonnes of molybdenum per annum. Completion of the transaction is subject to the ongoing conversion of the exploration license into a mining license.

Following the completion of the acquisition, Zijin Mining’s attributable molybdenum resources will surge from 920,000 tonnes to 2.9 million tonnes, accounting for approximately one-third of China’s total. And the company will be on track to become one of the world’s largest molybdenum producers.

The Shapinggou Molybdenum Mine is situated in Jinzhai County, an old revolutionary base deep in the Dabie Mountains. The deposit was discovered only at the beginning of this century.

It has 2,337,800 tonnes of resources and is the world’s largest molybdenum-only mine. With an average grade of 0.143%, the mine has about 630,000 tonnes of resources grading as high as over 0.3%, while 65% of molybdenum resources in China have a grade of less than 0.1%.

The deposit has only one main orebody that is 660 meters thick on average. The apple-shaped, thick orebody hosts 99.9% of the mine’s resources and is thus suitable for large-scale underground mining.

Such resource endowment will enable Shapinggou to achieve low-cost development and fast returns, making it a highly competitive project in the market.

According to the design of China ENFI Engineering Co., Ltd., the project will be built with a throughput of 10 million tonnes and produce 27,200 tonnes of molybdenum per annum after reaching its designed capacity.

Construction will be completed in 4.5 years and the project will have an initial mine life of 57 years.

Based on a price of RMB 150,000 per tonne of molybdenum concentrate, it is estimated the project will generate approximately RMB 1 billion in earnings per annum, creating brand new scope for Zijin’s growth.

Doubling down on a strategic mineral that represents the future

Molybdenum is a strategic, minor metal that is scarce in the world. There are few molybdenum-only deposits in the world as molybdenum often occurs as an associated mineral in copper and other metallic mines.

In recent years, there has been only a slow increase in the supply of the metal as it is subject to the development of copper mines.

Northcliff shares research into superior performance of tungsten-ion batteries

Staff Writer | October 11, 2022

Northcliff Resources (TSX: NCF) shared what it has discovered about new research on tungsten-ion batteries.

Research conducted by the University of Cambridge and partner Nyobolt have been investigating the advantages of niobium- and tungsten-based anode systems over lithium-ion battery systems. Several improvements have been discovered.

The new type of batteries can be 90+% charged in less than five minutes, and they withstand a wider range of temperatures with reduced fire risk. They have a 10-times higher input power density, which extends their working range and allows for smaller and lighter batteries.

Finally, they new types have 10-times the durability of conventional batteries, resulting in lower total cost of ownership.

Northcliff pointed out that these capabilities enable new applications and enhanced customer experience. Such batteries could be used high performance and industrial vehicles as well as a number of consumer appliances and tools.

Also, researchers at the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory discovered that by using a scalable synthesis method, they could create a novel compound of molybdenum, tungsten and niobate (known as MWNO). This compound has high efficiency, recharges quickly, and could potentially replace graphite in commercial batteries.

Should these new technologies be commercialized, they could positively impact the demand for tungsten and molybdenum, said Northcliff CEO Andrew Ing.

Northcliff holds an 88.5% interest and is the operator of the Sisson tungsten-molybdenum project in new Brunswick. (Todd Corp. of New Zealand holds the balance of the project as well as a 52% interest in Northcliff). The 2013 feasibility study is being updated, but it posits a 30,000-t/d open pit and mill producing ammonium paratungstate and molybdenum.

The Scisson project has a measured and indicated resource of 387 million tonnes grading 0.067% tungsten oxide and 0.21% molybdenum. The inferred portion is 187 million tonnes at 0.50% tungsten oxide and 0.020% molybdenum.

Un prospect de Molybdène à un demi pour mille de concentration en Colombie Britannique.
Stuhini tables resource estimate for Ruby Creek molybdenum deposit in BC

Staff Writer | March 15, 2022

Stuhini Exploration (TSXV: STU) has provided a pit-constrained mineral resource estimate for the Ruby Creek molybdenum deposit located 35 km east of Atlin, BC. The resource estimate was undertaken by Mine Development Associates (MDA), a division of RESPEC.

According to MDA calculations, Ruby Creek contains pit-constrained measured and indicated resources of 433.0 million lb. molybdenum, hosted within 369.4 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.053% molybdenum. There are also 43.7 million lb. molybdenum hosted within 42.0 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.047% molybdenum in the inferred category.

“MDA has developed a very robust resource model that will form the basis for future economic studies,” Ehsan Salmabadi, Stuhini’s VP of exploration, noted. “Our efforts in the coming months will focus on internal scoping studies to give us guidance on our next steps in assessing the economics of the Ruby Creek molybdenum deposit.”

The Ruby Creek property, also known as Adanac (named after its former operator), is located in the heart of the Atlin gold camp, with seven significant placer creeks within the tenures that are also prospective for base and precious metals. The molybdenum deposit was advanced by Adanac through feasibility, permitting and funding, until its mine construction was derailed by the 2008 financial crisis.

Stuhini currently has an option agreement with Global Drilling Solutions to acquire the asset, which can exercised by making share and cash payments totalling C$1.06 million over a four-year term.

Greenland Resources initiates mining application for its Malmbjerg Molybdenum project in Greenland

By NS Energy Staff Writer 10 Dec 2019

Once granted, exploitation licenses are valid for 30 years and can be renewed for an additional 20 years.

........
The Malmbjerg Molybdenum deposit has pit-constrained Measured and Indicated Resources of 247.1 million tonnes at 0.180% MoS2, for 587 million pounds of contained Molybdenum metal (RPA, 2018).
The Project benefits from a 2008 Feasibility Study completed by Wardrop (now Tetra Tech), an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (SRK, 2007) and had a previous exploitation license granted in 2009. In light of the recently completed engineering optimization and Greenland Resources ownership, the Company needs to update the EIA and SIA to obtain a new exploitation license. Once granted, exploitation licenses are valid for 30 years and can be renewed for an additional 20 years without the necessity of refiling permit applications.
