Foresight Energy invests in Silvermines pumped storage hydro project

By NS Energy Staff Writer 03 Nov 2023

To be developed on a 148-ha site in Tipperary on the Northern ridge of the Silvermines Mountain range, the Irish pumped storage hydro facility will have a storage capacity of 1.8GWh that can be delivered at a rate of 300MW over six hours

Foresight Group’s energy transition fund Foresight Energy Infrastructure Partners (FEIP) has committed an investment into the development of the 360MW Silvermines pumped storage hydro project in Ireland.

In this regard, the energy transition fund has acquired an equity stake in the Irish hydropower project.

To be developed on a 148-ha site in Tipperary on the Northern ridge of the Silvermines Mountain range, the pumped storage hydro facility is being developed by Siga-Hydro, a firm focused on strategic asset development in the clean energy and renewable sector.

The Silvermines hydropower project will have a storage capacity of 1.8GWh that can be delivered at a rate of 300MW over six hours.

Siga Hydro CEO Darren Quinn said: “We very much welcome our partnership with Foresight Energy Infrastructure Partners.

“Their status as long-term investors with substantial financial capacity and their strategic vision is of utmost importance for projects like ours that require sustained commitment.”

The Irish hydropower project will also utilise the existing void to build a lower reservoir and develop a second, upper reservoir below the crest of the hilltop.

Once developed, each reservoir of the Silvermines project will have a capacity of 2.6 million m3.

Foresight Energy Infrastructure Partners’ investment comes after the grant funding awarded to the pumped storage hydro project from the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility earlier this year.

The European Climate Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (CINEA) awarded €4.3m for the Silvermines hydropower project.

The Irish facility will support the country to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels and enable the integration of more variable renewable generation on the grid.

Besides, the Silvermines pumped storage hydro project will generate job opportunities in the region and deliver significant environmental benefits.

Ireland surpasses 680 MW of installed PV capacity
Ireland could potentially reach 1 GW of cumulative installed PV capacity by the end of this year, according to new figures from the Irish Solar Energy Association.

JUNE 28, 2023 EMILIANO BELLINI

Ireland has deployed around 680 MW of solar power spread across 59,888 generators to date, according to a new report from the Irish Solar Energy Association.

Most of this capacity originates from seven large-scale plants surpassing 5 MW, totaling 349 MW, and 208 MW from microgeneration solar arrays, encompassing systems up to 12 kW. Small-scale ground-mounted PV plants for self-consumption account for another 95 MW, while mini-generation systems ranging from 12 kW to 50 kW contribute 5 MW.

Ireland currently operates 22 MW of utility-scale systems (ranging from 1 MW to 5 MW), 0.3 MW of systems ranging from 200 kW to 1 MW, and 0.54 MW of systems with a capacity between 50 kW and 200 kW.

“By the end of 2023, ESB Networks forecasts almost 1 GW of solar will have connected from domestic rooftop to utility-scale solar projects,” the association said in a statement. “This makes the solar industry the fastest growing renewable power source in Ireland.”

Ireland supports rooftop PV operating under its net metering scheme, via a rebate program. The scheme is designed to deploy around 380 MW of solar capacity.

The country also supports large-scale solar via an auction mechanism. In the first renewables auction, the Irish authorities allocated 796 MW of generating capacity. The average weighted bid price for the technology-neutral auction was €0.07408 ($0.08)/kWh.

Ireland makes history with its first offshore wind auction

May 15, 2023 evwind

Ireland successfully held its first-ever offshore wind auction. Four projects with a combined capacity of 3 GW were awarded. The average price of the winning bids was €86/MWh, much lower than expected. The successful completion of the auction is a breakthrough for renewables in Ireland and critical to achieving the targets set in Ireland’s 2030 Climate Action Plan.

EirGrid, the Irish transmission system operator, has announced the provisional results ** of Ireland’s first-ever offshore wind auction under its new Offshore Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (ORESS). The auction attracted major interest from wind energy developers, leading to a healthy oversubscription: four offshore wind projects with a combined capacity of 3 GW were awarded. More than 4.1 GW of bids were submitted.

The auction is a crucial landmark for the expansion of offshore wind in Ireland. As of now Ireland only has one small offshore wind farm of 25 MW.

The auction is also key to delivering Ireland’s 2030 Climate Action Plan. Ireland wants to have 5 GW of installed offshore wind capacity and a further 2 GW of floating wind capacity under development by 2030. It’s central to the government’s target to provide 80% of electricity from renewables by 2030. But it will only be the beginning. By 2050 Ireland aspires to have at least 37 GW of offshore wind.

The winning bids will be granted a 20-year contract-for-difference (CfD). The average price of the winning bids was €86/MWh, lower than previously expected and significantly lower than the maximum bid price of 150€/MWh.

The winning bids

The winning bids were the North Irish Sea Array (Statkraft, 500 MW), Dublin Array (RWE and Saorgus Energy, up to 850 MW), Codling Wind Park (EDF and Fred Olsen, up to 1,450 MW) and Sceirde Rocks (Corio Generation, 450 MW). Three wind farms will be built off the East Coast and one off the West Coast. The first projects could be operational by 2028, depending how fast they get their planning permission. None of the successful projects have yet been able to apply for planning permission. All the projects have to produce power before 2032.

RWE delighted with provisional Contract for Difference win for Dublin Array in first Irish offshore auction

May 12, 2023 evwind

RWE, one of the world’s leading offshore wind companies, was today delighted to be provisionally awarded a Contract for Difference (CfD) in the first Irish Offshore Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (ORESS1) auction, run by Irish Grid operator EirGrid.

The weighted average strike price of provisionally successful offers was €86.05/MWh.

The provisional offer is for RWE’s Dublin Array Offshore Wind Farm, which would have a maximum installed capacity of 824 megawatts (MW), and is the company’s first offshore wind farm to be developed off the east coast of Ireland. RWE is an important renewables developer in Ireland and a key partner to Irish Government in reaching its 2030 offshore wind targets and pathway to net zero ambition by 2050.
............
Dublin Array is a proposed offshore wind farm on the Kish and Bray Banks, approximately 10 km from the coastline of counties Dublin and Wicklow. Once operational, Dublin Array would have an installed capacity of 824 MW, and consist of up to a maximum of 50 turbines, depending on the model of turbine chosen at the time. Its output of clean, green electricity would help to reduce Ireland’s carbon emissions each year.

RWE is developing Dublin Array in partnership with Saorgus Energy, both partners hold a 50 percent share in the project.
