Prysmian wins €1.9bn contract for 2GW Eastern Green Link 2 project

By NS Energy Staff Writer 28 Feb 2024

Under the deal, the Italian cable solutions provider Prysmian Group will deliver a major high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system for the Eastern Green Link 2 electricity transmission project between Peterhead in Scotland and Drax in England

Cable solutions provider Prysmian Group has finalised the contract worth €1.9bn for the 2GW Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) subsea electricity superhighway project between Scotland and England.

The contract has been awarded by Eastern Green Link 2 Limited, a joint venture (JV) between SSEN Transmission and UK electricity transmission network owners National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET).

Under the deal, the Italian cable solutions provider will deliver a major high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system for the electricity transmission project.

The scope of works includes designing, manufacturing, installation, testing and commissioning of the required HVDC cable system.

The contract award follows the earlier selection of Prysmian Group as the exclusive preferred bidder in May 2023.

A later commitment to guarantee the Italian company’s continued capacity availability for the Eastern Green Link 2 project was made in June 2023.

The subsea electricity superhighway project involves the installation of a 525kV high voltage direct current (HVDC) underwater transmission cable that will be laid from Peterhead in Scotland to Drax in England.

Once operational, the nearly 436km long Eastern Green Link 2 project is expected to significantly increase the UK’s capacity to deliver clean energy for approximately two million households in the UK.

The electricity transmission project is scheduled to be operational in 2029.

Prysmian Group Transmission BU executive vice president Hakan Ozmen said: “We are very proud to have the opportunity to play our role in the development of such a strategic infrastructure for UK, by making available our state-of-the-art cable technology.

“Once completed, the electrical ‘superhighway’ cable link will unlock the rich renewable energy capacity of Scotland and significantly increase the UK’s capacity to deliver clean energy for around two million homes in the UK.”

Earlier this month, Prysmian Group finalised three contracts worth about €5bn with Amprion for the BalWin1 and BalWin2 offshore grid connection systems and the DC34 underground cable project in Germany.

TotalEnergies Commissions Its Biggest Offshore Wind Farm

October 17, 2023 evwind

TotalEnergies and its partner SSE Renewables are pleased to announce that their Seagreen offshore wind farm is now fully operational and running at its design capacity of 1,075 MW.

Seagreen is a joint venture between TotalEnergies (51%) and SSE Renewables (49%). It is located in the North Sea, some 27 km off the coast of Angus. It is TotalEnergies’ biggest operational offshore wind farm worldwide and the world’s deepest fixed bottom wind farm, with its foundation reaching nearly 60 meters below sea level.

The project, which began construction in June 2020, has been completed in around 3 years for a global investment of around $4 billion, globally in line with the expected capex. The development and construction were led, with the support of TotalEnergies, by SSE which will now operate the offshore wind farm for its expected 25-year lifetime.

The 1,075 MW offshore wind farm has the capacity to generate around 5 terawatt hours (TWh), or enough renewable electricity to power almost 1.6 million homes annually, equivalent to two-thirds of all Scottish homes. Seagreen will also prevent the emission of over 2 million tons of CO2 from fossil fuel electricity generation every year.

Consistently with its business model, TotalEnergies will commercialize, through Seagreen, its share of production through a mix of a long-term contract at guaranteed price, including a 15-year CfD (Contract for Difference) awarded by the UK Government, and a 15-year private CfD with the SSE Group, and short-term sales on the wholesale market.

« I am very pleased to see Seagreen generating at full power, making it TotalEnergies’ biggest offshore wind farm worldwide. This 1 GW project is a new step in delivering our strategy of building a world-class, cost-competitive portfolio of renewable energy to deliver clean, reliable and affordable power to our customers. It will positively contribute to achieving our Integrated Power 12% profitability target and our objective of reaching more than 100 TWh of power generation by 2030, » said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.

Mainstream, Ocean Winds to develop second ScotWind floating offshore wind site

By NS Energy Staff Writer 18 Aug 2023

Through the second ScotWind site, Mainstream and Ocean Winds aim to expand the overall footprint of the Arven offshore wind farm, which is expected to generate electricity to supply clean energy to two million households, to 2.3GW

Renewable energy company Mainstream Renewable Power has partnered with Ocean Winds to develop the second ScotWind floating offshore wind site located in Scotland with a capacity of 500MW.

Ocean Winds is a JV between Spanish renewable energy company EDP Renewables and France-based utility company ENGIE.

Through the second ScotWind site, Mainstream and Ocean Winds aim to expand the overall footprint of the Arven offshore wind farm to 2.3GW.

To be developed about 22km from Shetland, the Arven project comprises two sites in a larger area called the NE1 area.

The first 1.8GW site is located east of the Shetland Islands and was awarded to the 50-50 joint venture (JV) between Mainstream Renewable Power and Ocean Winds in 2022 as part of the ScotWind leasing process.

Separately, Ocean Winds was allocated a 500MW site in the same NE1 block.

Mainstream Renewable Power has completed the acquisition of a 50% stake in Ocean Wind’s holding company and the two sites are now being developed jointly by the parties.

Once completed, the Arven offshore wind farm is expected to generate electricity to supply clean energy to two million households and offset three million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Mainstream Renewable Power offshore wind head Tove Røskaft said: “Arven offers a unique combination of scale, world-class wind resource and routes to market which enable it to deliver a range of compelling benefits for the good of Shetland, Scotland and the UK.’’

Through the collaboration to develop the two sites, both parties intend to utilise their combined expertise to maximise benefits for Shetland and Scotland, generate supply chain opportunities and jobs along with contributing to the UK’s net zero ambition.

Furthermore, Mainstream Renewable Power and Ocean Winds have started early-stage local engagement, meeting with supply chain partners, local authorities and fisheries representatives.

Ocean Winds UK country manager Adam Morrison said: “This experienced partnership will capitalise on delivery experience both in Scotland and internationally.

“We have already commenced surveys and a programme of early local engagement, including the fishing industry, and we are committed to working closely with the local community in developing this larger Arven project, which will be a significant driver for the energy transition.”

The largest offshore jack-up installation vessel ever built, Voltaire, has just arrived in the UK port of Able Seaton ahead of its first campaign on Dogger Bank Wind Farm.

Voltaire of Jan De Nul Group was delivered in late 2022. Since then she has been undertaking final preparations for her very first assignment, the construction of the Dogger Bank Wind Farm phases A, B and C.

In total, the vessel will be responsible for installing 277 GE Renewable Energy Haliade-X turbines. Voltaire will sail out in early July to begin installation.

Olly Cass, Dogger Bank Wind Farm Project Director, said:

“As offshore wind technology grows in scale and power, the industry needs stronger vessels that are capable of meeting these engineering challenges. With its lifting capacity of more than 3,000 tonnes and ultra-low emissions design, we can’t wait to see this next generation vessel take on the challenge of installing some of the world’s largest and most powerful turbines, as we head towards first power for Dogger Bank A this summer.”

Jan Van Impe, Manager Jan De Nul Offshore Renewables, said:

“Dogger Bank Wind Farm is exactly the type of project we had in mind when we took the decision to build our Voltaire. The scale and characteristics of the offshore Dogger Bank turbines offer the perfect challenge for this next generation state-of-the art jack-up installation vessel. We are excited to continue our contribution to the energy transition together with industry leaders SSE Renewables, Equinor and Vårgrønn by installing the offshore wind turbines at Dogger Bank A, B and C in the most efficient and clean manner possible.”

Voltaire is the first seaworthy installation vessel to be an Ultra-Low Emission vessel

Voltaire, named after the pioneering European Enlightenment philosopher, has a lifting capacity of over 3,000 tonnes.

The vessel is fitted with a highly advanced exhaust filtering system by means of a selective catalytic reduction system and a diesel particulate filter, making her the very first seagoing installation vessel of her kind to be an Ultra-Low Emission vessel (ULEv), moreover Stage V-certified.

SSE Renewables announced that the deepest wind turbine foundation in the world to date has been installed at the 1.1GW Seagreen offshore wind farm in Scotland.

The turbine foundation has been put in place at a depth of 58.6m, surpassing the previous record of 57.4m set by the same offshore wind farm project in October 2022.

The deepest offshore foundation represents the installation of the 112th jacket at the Scottish offshore wind project.

Estimated to involve an investment of £3bn, the Seagreen offshore wind farm features 114 turbines. The project is anticipated to commence commercial operation later this year.

SSE Renewables said that the 112th wind turbine foundation was transported to the project site on a barge operated by Seaway 7.

Saipem 7000, a semisubmersible crane vessel, is being engaged for lifting each of the 2,000-tonne turbine foundations into place.

Scotland Energy Security and Net Zero Minister of State Graham Stuart said: “As I saw first-hand last week, Seagreen is making history with the world’s deepest wind turbine foundation which, once operational, will play an invaluable role in powering more of Britain from Britain.”

Located 27km from the coast of Angus in the North Sea, the Seagreen offshore wind farm is owned by a joint venture (JV) of TotalEnergies and SSE Renewables.

The final wind turbine foundation is anticipated to be put in place later this week. Each of the wind turbine foundations will host a Vestas V164-10 MW turbine.

The Seagreen offshore wind farm produced its first power following the commissioning of the first wind turbine in August 2022.

Once fully operational, the Seagreen project is anticipated to produce nearly 5,000GWh of clean energy per annum, which is sufficient to power over 1.6 million households in the UK.

SSE chief executive Alistair Phillips-Davies said: “Seagreen is an important part of SSE’s £12.5bn Net Zero Acceleration Plan, through which we’re investing £7m a day in critical low-carbon infrastructure that will help the UK achieve energy independence.

“By the end of the decade, we have plans to invest over £24bn in Britain alone.”

Total And BP Tap Wind Power To Decarbonize North Sea Oil Operations

By Michael Kern - Mar 24, 2023,

Crown Estate Scotland has awarded offshore wind leases to 13 Companies, including BP and TotalEnergies, to support North Sea oil and gas decarbonization.

On Friday, Crown Estate Scotland, an independent commercial organization responsible for managing the British seabed, announced that it had awarded leases to 13 companies, including Big Oil's BP and TotalEnergies, and several UK renewable firms.
The companies will develop offshore wind projects to supply power primarily to North Sea oil and gas platforms to reduce the sector's emissions.

Out of 19 bidders, the 13 selected companies will commence offshore wind development work with an initial combined investment of approximately £260 million ($317.28 million). Flotation Energy and Cerulean Winds are set to be the largest investors in this endeavor, with investments of nearly £96 million and £138 million, respectively.

BP's Alternative Energy Investments division is slated to initially invest £1,670,917, while TotalEnergies will contribute £200,000 towards developing these projects. Crown Estate Scotland aims to attract investment in innovative offshore wind initiatives in Scottish waters through a leasing process known as INTOG (Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas). The primary goal of this strategy is to help decarbonize North Sea operations.

Crown Estate Scotland has stated that the maximum capacity for all awarded projects is 5 gigawatts (GW), with an additional 500 MW allocated for smaller, more innovative projects. Successful bidders will be offered a seabed lease with a term ranging from 25 to 50 years.

Developing offshore wind projects to provide clean energy for North Sea oil and gas platforms is a significant step towards achieving the UK's decarbonization goals. This innovative approach aims to reduce the environmental impact of oil and gas operations while simultaneously promoting the growth of renewable energy industries.
