Operation started in April 2018 at Pilsworth Landfill facility in Bury, Greater Manchester. The plant demonstrates how cryogenic energy storage can provide a number of balancing services, including Short Term Operating Reserve (STOR) and supporting the grid during winter peaks.

Developed in partnership with recycling and renewable energy company, Viridor, the project is backed by UK government funding of £8 million.

World’s first Giga-scale cryogenic battery launched

Long-duration energy storage firm Highview has developed the world’s first giga-scale cryogenic battery.

The cryogenic, can be located anywhere, is scalable to up to a 10-hour 200MW/2GWh system. Long energy duration energy storage currently on the market, such as lithium-ion batteries, range between 4 to 8 hours.

The new system provides up to weeks of energy storage

The cryogenic system is equivalent in performance to a fossil fuel power plant.

The system can enable renewable energy to be used as baseload at large scale, whilst supporting energy security.

The cryogenic system uses liquid air as the storage medium to provide grid operators with time shifting, synchronous voltage support, frequency regulation and reserves, synchronous inertia, and black start capabilities.

The developer claims the system has a small carbon footprint compared to other energy storage types.

Alex Eller, senior research analyst with Navigant Research, said, “Long-duration technologies such as cryogenic energy storage will become increasingly necessary for an electricity system to transition from a primary reliance on conventional fossil fuel generation to a grid dominated by variable renewable generation from solar and wind.”

“This is a pivotal moment for the renewable energy industry and for anyone who wants to deploy large amounts of renewables,” said Javier Cavada, president and CEO of Highview Power. “As more and more renewables are added to the grid, long-duration, giga-scale energy storage is the necessary foundation to make these intermittent sources of power reliable enough to become baseload. The solution provider has won the 2019 Ashden Award for Energy Innovation with its proprietary CRYOBattery technology.

Highview Power to build 50 MW/250 MWh cryogenic storage plant in UK

Highview Power said Monday it will build a 50 MW/250 MWh cryogenic energy storage facility in North of England, touted as the largest battery storage system in Europe.

The UK energy storage firm has plans for more projects using its CRYOBattery in the UK and is in the process of securing sites. Highview Power’s proprietary technology uses liquid air as the storage medium, enabling capacities of more than 200 MW/1.2 GWh. The battery and has a lifespan of 30-40 years.

“[..] at approximately GBP 110/MWh for a 10-hour, 200 MW/2 GWh system, the CRYOBattery offers the lowest levelized cost of storage for large-scale applications,” Highview Power calculates.

The North-of-England project will be the UK’s first commercial cryogenic energy storage facility. It will be built at a decommissioned thermal power plant. The battery will provide grid stability services to the National Grid and will support a further increase in the share of renewables in the mix. The facility could also deliver market arbitrage, frequency management, reserve, and grid constraint management services.

Highview Power said it is in talks with potential offtakers to contract for the capabilities and services the CRYOBattery plant can provide.

The company has already installed and put online two cryogenic energy storage plants in the UK. The first one, a pilot plant of 2.5 MWh, was commissioned in 2014 in Slough, Greater London. A much bigger demonstration facility, of 15 MWh, was opened in 2018 in Bury, Greater Manchester.

Liquid air energy storage firm Highview Power has landed a $46 million (£35.6m) investment from Japanese manufacturing company Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI).

Highview Power has been seeking funds to extend its cryo-battery technology, which cools air to -190°C, stores it as a liquid and then converts it into a pressurised gas which drives turbines to produce electricity when released under pressure, generating clean power.

Tomas Harju-Jeanty, CEO at SHI daughter company Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW) said: “One of the biggest barriers to a carbon-free future has been the ability of renewables to perform as reliably as, and as cost-effectively as traditional fuel sources.

“Highview Power’s long duration energy storage technology not only solves the problems that enable dispatchable renewables but will be a catalyst in bringing the energy transition forward.”

Javier Cavada, President and CEO of Highview Power, said “By partnering with a large technology company with the reputation of SHI, we will be able to benefit from their vast know-how, resources, and operating experience in diversified markets.”

Le chantier de la plus grosse batterie à air liquide de la planète vient de démarrer au Trafford Energy Park, près de Manchester en Angleterre. Piloté par Highview Power, le projet devrait être opérationnel en 2022.

La batterie sera capable d'alimenter 200.000 maisons pendant cinq heures et de stocker de l'énergie pendant des semaines. Il s'agit d'une première capitale, car elle pourrait pousser davantage de pays à se tourner vers les énergies renouvelables.

Relever le défi du stockage est essentiel pour que ces dernières puissent un jour espérer remplacer définitivement les énergies fossiles: sans vent ou sans lumière, les parcs d'éoliennes ou de panneaux solaires cessent de produire; le trop-plein accumulé lorsque les conditions météorologiques sont bonnes est quant à lui perdu.

Lorsque la demande sera peu importante, la batterie de Highview Power se servira des surplus d'énergie verte pour compresser de l'air jusqu'à lui faire atteindre sa forme liquide, avant de le stocker; lorsque la demande augmentera, cet air liquide sera relâché sous forme de gaz, alimentant une turbine qui renverra l'énergie vers le réseau.

L'installation pourra emmagasiner jusqu'à 250 MWh d'énergie, soit près du double de la plus grande batterie chimique, construite par Tesla dans le sud de l'Australie.

Work begins on 250MWh CRYOBattery lauded as ‘one of Europe’s largest energy storage systems’

Highview Power has begun site work for its 50MW/250MWh liquid air energy storage facility in Greater Manchester.

The CRYOBattery – as it has been dubbed – is being developed with Carlton Power and is to enter into commercial operation in 2023, with the intention of generating revenue through the Capacity Market, grid balancing, arbitrage and ancillary services such as frequency response and voltage support.

It was first announced in 2019, with a £10 million grant awarded to the project from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy earlier this year.

The long-duration storage cools ambient air, turning it to liquid at -196°C. This liquid air is then stored at low pressure and later heated and expanded to drive a turbine and generate power.

It is one of many types of long-duration storage being developed, although Highview claims it to be the only long-duration energy storage solution available that is locatable and can offer multiple gigawatt-hours of storage.


The company also lauded the CRYOBattery’s “small footprint” as well as its ability to be scaled with no size limitations or geographic constraints.

Highview Power selects ‘core’ turbomachinery equipment supplier for giant liquid air storage system

Liquid air energy storage (LAES) company Highview Power has chosen Volkswagen subsidiary MAN Energy Solutions to provide turbomachinery which will form the core of a 50MW / 250MWh facility under development in northern England.

Highview Power's large-scale CRYOBattery is being constructed in Carrington Village, Greater Manchester. The MAN Energy Solutions turbomachinery train is to form the core of the liquid air energy storage facility, which Highview claims will be one of the largest battery storage systems in Europe once completed. As well as turbomachinery for marine, power plant and other applications, MAN is also known for its diesel engine technology.

Highview has claimed that its LAES technology is relatively simple to build, using off-the-shelf components and construction techniques perfected in other industries, offering long-duration energy storage that is safe and has a low cost of ownership over its lifetime. The technology can storage and integrate renewable energy at bulk and also perform grid services. The CRYOBattery cools ambient air to -196°C which is then stored at low pressure before being heated and expanded to drive a turbine and generate power.

Having already built a megawatt-scale demonstrator near Manchester, Highview, which announced the successful close of a US$70 million funding round in February, also has a pipeline of projects being developed in the US, each expected to offer several hours of storage and in the range of tens to hundreds of megawatt-hours.

Construction of the asset – which is being developed with Carlton Power – began in November 2020, with plans for it to enter into commercial operation in 2022.

This construction is to proceed in two phases, with the first to involve the installation of a ‘stability island’ to provider near-instantaneous energy grid stabilisation. This is to be achieved using a generator and flywheel among other components. Enabling the short-term stabilisation will provide the basis for Phase 2 and the completion of the liquid air energy storage system including various compressors, air expanders and cryogenic equipment.

Phase 2 will see the integration of stability services with a full-scale long-duration energy storage system.

The Carrington project is to offer a blueprint for future projects, according to Highview and MAN Energy Solutions, as well as cement the partnership between the two.

Wayne Jones OBE, chief sales officer and member of the Executive Board of MAN Energy Solutions, said there has been "a lot of background work involved in getting to this stage – in the face of much competition – and I am personally delighted that Highview Power has chosen to work with MAN Energy Solutions".

4 semaines est intéressant, dans la mesure où il y aura rarement des périodes de 4 semaines sans vent ni soleil.
Pour stockage intersaisonnier, on ne voit que l'hydrogène et le rendement est mauvais, pour un stockage pour quelque jours au mieux on a les STEP, et elle peuvent s'épuiser avant que le vent ne revienne ( si on conçoit un système d'énergie sans centrales fossile en backup). Ce type de stockage prendrait un créneau de pas de temps qui manquait, si le rendement est meilleur que l'hydrogène.

je ne vois pas trop de métaux rares utilisés ici, sauf des métaux rares dont il est déjà connu qu'ils sont utilisés dans des moteurs électriques (pour les compresseurs dans cette installation).

Mais , Acier, Cuivre, Aluminium, oui beaucoup.
peut être des éléments d' addition dans l' acier pour bien tenir les température cryogéniques ?

Highview Enlasa, a joint venture between Highview Power, a UK-based provider of long-term energy storage solutions, and Chilean energy company Enlasa, is planning to invest $150 million in a liquid air storage project to be developed in Diego de Almagro, in Chile's northern region of Atacama.

The 50 MW facility, which is currently in the pre-feasibility engineering development phase, will be able to provide 10 hours of storage.

This project is scheduled to enter into environmental proceedings in August, with construction expected to start in the second half of 2023 with the support of SK Engineering and Construction, a subsidiary of Chilean conglomerate Koppers group.

Janus Capital injecte 14,4 millions $ dans Highview Power pour développer les systèmes de stockage en Afrique

Le développement des technologies de stockage est la réponse apportée à la principale limite des énergies renouvelables que constitue l’intermittence dans la production. Avec les avancées technologiques, les entreprises spécialisées telles de Highview Power se mobilisent.

Janus Capital, une filiale de Janus Continental Group (JCG), investit 14,4 millions $ dans Highview Power, un fournisseur de systèmes de stockage. Cet investissement permettra à Highview Power d’étendre ses activités dans la région des Grands Lacs en Afrique de l’Est et dans d’autres régions du continent.

En février dernier, Janus Capital avait déjà contribué à hauteur de 13 millions $ à la levée de fonds de 70 millions $ de Highview. L’investissement total de Janus Capital dans la société s’élève désormais à 27,4 millions $.

« Pour parvenir à un monde 100 % renouvelable, un stockage d’énergie fiable à long terme sera essentiel. Cela fait des solutions de stockage vertes, telles que celles fournies par Highview Power, une étape cruciale sur notre chemin commun vers la durabilité », a déclaré Rikin Shah, directeur général de JCG. Selon lui, Highview Power sera un leader du marché du stockage d’énergie à long terme.

L’entreprise a développé une solution de stockage d’électricité à grande échelle appelée CRYOBattery. Cette solution offre un stockage d’énergie à air liquide, qui peut facilement remplacer les combustibles fossiles, contrairement au stockage par batterie qui est largement utilisé dans les mini-réseaux verts en Afrique.

Great Lakes Africa Energy (GLAE), une autre filiale de JCG, a également signé un partenariat avec Highview Power pour co-développer des projets de production d’énergie renouvelable et de stockage à grande échelle dans la région des Grands Lacs.

Construction to begin imminently at commercial-scale liquid air energy storage (LAES) plant in the United Kingdom. Major investors include Centrica, which joins as a strategic partner.

Highview Power is ready to start building a 300 MWh liquid air energy storage (LAES) plant in the United Kingdom after securing GBP 300 million ($383 million) from a syndicate of investors.

The British LAES company raised the capital in a funding round led by the state-owned UK Infrastructure Bank and energy multinational Centrica. Other investors include Rio Tinto, Goldman Sachs, Kirkbi and Mosaic Capital.

Construction at the site in Carrington, Manchester, will begin immediately, according to Highview Power. The commercial-scale LAES is expected to have an output power of 50 MW per hour for six hours. Highview Power said the facility will be operational in early 2026.

LAES works by using excess energy to power an industrial liquefier that produces liquid air, which can then be stored in an insulated tank. When there is demand, stored air is pumped at high pressure, reheated and expanded, resulting in high pressure gaseous air which can be directed through a turbine to produce electricity.

Jusqu’à 200 000 foyers alimentés en énergie

Leader mondial de cette technologie, la société britannique Highview Power s’est associée au développeur britannique de centrales électriques, Carlton Power, pour entreprendre ce projet. « Cette installation de stockage par cryogénie aura une puissance instantanée de 50 MW, déclare Highview Power. Elle sera directement connectée au réseau national d’électricité au Royaume-Uni et permettra d’alimenter en énergie jusqu’à 200 000 foyers pendant cinq heures en même temps ».

Alors que le stockage d’énergie cryogénique obtient généralement un faible rendement de conversion de l’électricité, de l’ordre de 10 %, l’entreprise annonce un rendement jusqu’à 60 % grâce à un système de récupération des flux. En effet, lors de la phase de liquéfaction de l’air par compression, de la chaleur est générée et sert à alimenter l’échangeur de chaleur du second cycle. Inversement, le second cycle, qui conduit à l’évaporation du cryogène, produit du froid et sert à refroidir l’air à très basses températures lors du premier cycle. « Lorsque de grandes quantités de chaleur ou de froid résiduels sont disponibles à côté de notre installation, notre système peut intégrer ces flux et les utiliser pour augmenter encore l’efficacité, précise la société. Le rendement peut alors dépasser 70 %, sous réserve de la qualité et de la quantité de ces flux disponibles. »

Sans fournir de données chiffrées, Highview Power met en avant un coût de stockage inférieur à celui des batteries lithium-ion ainsi qu’une durée de stockage plus longue. « Notre technologie ne connaît pas de dégradation de sa performance dans le temps, déclare l’entreprise. Notre installation est principalement fabriquée à partir de l’acier qui a une durée de vie de 30 à 40 ans, contre seulement 10 ans pour les batteries. De plus, aucun métal rare ou produit chimique nocif n’est impliqué dans notre technologie. »

La vraie question ce sera le rendement ECONOMIQUE de ce type de stockage, le différentiel de prix d'achat et de vente de l'électricité et la durée d'amortissement des équipement par rapport à leur durée de vie
