Google taps 1.6m solar panels to power US data centres

January 18, 2019 // By Nick Flaherty

Image

Google is building two data centres in the Southeastern US that will take 413MW of power from 1.6m solar panels

The power for the datacentres will come from new 150MW solar farms in Yum Yum, Tennessee and Hollywood in northern Alabama as part of a deal with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and are the largest solar farms ever to be built for Google.

Powering data centres is a key challenge for the large providers. TVA’s development partners —NextEra Energy Resources and Invenergy — will hire hundreds of workers in the region. To date, Google's more than 30 long-term contract commitments to purchase renewable energy have resulted in nearly $5 billion in investment worldwide.

The deployment of the 1.6 million solar panels means approximately 72 percent of the data centre electricity use in Alabama and Tennessee will be matched on an hourly basis with carbon-free sources, compared to 48 percent carbon free for the mainstream grid at the moment.

Candela Renewables secures 140MW solar PPA with Google

By Jules Scully Sep 01, 2020

Solar project developer Candela Renewables will provide Google with 140MW of power from a facility in Texas as part of a new power purchase agreement.

As part of the deal, Candela will develop a new solar power project to supply green energy to Texas’ ERCOT power grid.

The collaboration stems from Google’s ambition to purchase 1.6GW of renewable electricity via 18 energy deals. Announced last September, the clean energy ramp-up sees the tech giant purchase energy from 720MW of solar farms, split between Texas (490MW), North Carolina (155MW) and South Carolina (75MW) – more than doubling the capacity of its global solar portfolio as of 2019.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that most of the company’s renewable energy purchases in the US were wind-driven up until last year, but the declining cost of solar “made harnessing the sun increasingly cost-effective”.

Google, with 1,107MW, was second only to Facebook (1,546MW) last year in terms of corporate renewable energy procurement in the US, according to the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance.

Candela Renewables, which was founded in 2018 by former First Solar employees, has a portfolio of more than 3.6GW of utility-scale solar projects and 2.2GW of co-located energy storage.

“The team at Candela has pushed itself to not just develop renewable power and storage, but to create projects and find partners that move the entire industry forward in innovative ways that have an impact beyond an individual piece of infrastructure,” the company said.

Amazon hails 3.4MW solar project atop Tilbury fulfilment centre as its largest in Europe

Published: 2 Oct 2020

Image

A 3.4MW solar system has been installed at Amazon’s fulfilment centre in Tilbury in its latest move towards a 2040 net zero.

It is the largest rooftop installation of any Amazon site in Europe, with 11,500 module solar panels installed across a site containing 2 million sq. ft. of operating space.

The company outlined its plans to install 20MW of rooftop solar at its fulfilment sites in 2018, with the installations intended to take place over the following eighteen months. It is planning to be powered by 100% renewable energy by 2025, resulting in the company having over 90 renewable energy projects worldwide. This includes 31 utility-scale solar and wind projects and 60 solar rootops on fufilment and sorting centres.

Brittany Stanton, senior energy programme manager at Amazon, said the company will continue to invest in “large on-site solar installations” like the one in Tilbury to help meet these targets, as well as “large off-site renewable energy, wind and solar projects where the power goes into our local utility grids”.

As part of its sustainability goals, Amazon is also planning to add 1,800 electric vehicles to its delivery fleet in Europe and has partnered the We Mean Business coalition to establish what it said is the "largest effort to mobilise the private sector to reach net zero carbon by 2040".

Amazon becomes ‘world’s largest’ renewable energy backer with 26 new utility-scale solar and wind projects

By Edith Hancock Dec 10, 2020

E-commerce giant Amazon has invested in 26 new utility-scale wind and solar projects worldwide, bringing the company’s total renewable energy capacity to 6.5GW.

Amazon has invested in solar and wind projects in France, Germany, Italy and South Africa for the first time as part of a plan to run on 100% renewable energy by 2025.

The company, which broke ground on its first solar farm in Virginia, US, four years ago, claims it is now the world’s largest corporate backer of renewable energy to-date.

Founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos said in June that Amazon would invest around US$2 billion in supporting low carbon technologies as part of its Climate Pledge, which was unveiled last year. The pledge sets out a series of targets for the company with the aim of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

While the company kept quiet about how exactly the funds would be spent, it has revealed today that it will invest in a further 3.4GW solar and wind capacity, bringing its overall capacity to 6.5GW.

As well as breaking ground in four new markets, Amazon will work on more energy farms in Australia, Sweden, the UK and the US.

Bezos said today (10 December) that Amazon is now on target to run on 100% renewable energy by 2025, “five years ahead of our original target”.

Amazon now owns and operates 127 renewable energy projects worldwide, including 59 utility-scale wind and solar projects, as well as 68 solar rooftops on its warehouse facilities.

Google signs 140MW energy contract with Engie in Germany
Companies build on previous deals signed in Belgium and the Netherlands.

September 01, 2021 By Dan Swinhoe

Google has signed a new 140MW renewable energy supply contract with Engie Deutschland.

Engie will assemble and negotiate an energy portfolio to provide Google with renewable electricity from solar and wind sources in Germany.

The solar power will be source from a new 39MW photovoltaic project scheduled to go into operation in 2023. The wind power will be sourced from 22 wind parks in five federal states that will see their lives extended so they continue to produce electricity instead of being dismantled at their end of life.

Google said this portfolio will ensure that the energy delivered to Google’s German facilities will be nearly 80 percent carbon-free by 2022 when measured on an hourly basis

"We selected Engie because of its expertise in decarbonization and its ability to transform the delivery of clean energy," said Marc Oman, energy senior lead of Global Data Centers at Google. "We need cooperation and partnerships with leading energy companies such as Engie, who work together for the long-term, sustainable use of energy. "

Engie will also offer comprehensive energy management services, including the procurement of residual supplies, balancing group management, network management, and more.

Google first began working with Engie in 2019 with the signing of a five-year green Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) from offshore wind in Belgium, followed by a similar deal in the Netherlands
