Un 1er navire de forage est arrivé dans la zone de prospection gazière en mer de l'Est

Un navire de forage faisant partie d'un important projet sud-coréen d'exploration gazière et pétrolière dans la mer de l'Est est arrivé sur son premier site de forage mardi. Alors que le navire s'apprête à débuter sa mission, le projet en entier se retrouve sur la sellette en raison de la situation politique à Séoul, d'après des sources au sein de l'industrie.

Le West Capella de l'armateur norvégien Seadrill Ltd. se trouve sur les lieux, dans les eaux à 50 km à l'est de la ville côtière de Pohang, dans le sud-est du pays, depuis ce matin 9h. Sa mission d'exploration devrait commencer dans le courant de la semaine, selon les sources.

Le navire s'était ancré à un point de mouillage près de la ville de Busan plus tôt ce mois-ci pour se charger en approvisionnement avant de mettre le cap sur le site de forage. Ce projet devrait permettre la découverte potentielle de 3,5 milliards de barils de gaz et 14 millions de pétrole. L'opération de récolte de prélèvements par forage devrait prendre environ deux mois, avec les premiers résultats d'analyse attendus pour le premier semestre de 2025.

Le gouvernement et la société publique Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) ont déjà prévenu que ces travaux d'exploration auraient un taux de succès estimé d'environ 20%, tout en précisant qu'il faudrait éventuellement explorer au minimum cinq sites au cours des prochaines années. Le West Capella est un bâtiment de 228 m de long assemblé par le constructeur naval coréen Samsung Heavy Industries en 2008 et peut forer jusqu'à une profondeur de 11,43 km.

Le projet en entier pourrait toutefois ne pas voir le jour, puisque l'Assemblée nationale, acquise à l'opposition, a opéré des coupes dans le budget et a notamment retiré l'ensemble des 49,7 milliards de wons (34,5 millions de dollars) qui devaient lui être alloué en 2025. Les troubles politiques, notamment avec l'adoption le week-end passé d'une motion de destitution contre le président Yoon Suk Yeol après sa tentative ratée d'imposer la loi martiale, sont autant d'obstacles qui rendent plus incertain l'avenir du projet.

South Korea’s new solar installations hit 2.5 GW in 2024
South Korea installed 2.5 GW of new solar capacity in 2024, bringing its cumulative PV capacity to more than 29.5 GW, according to the Korean Energy Agency.

South Korea installed approximately 2.5 GW of new PV in 2024, according to preliminary figures from the Korean Energy Agency’s monthly bulletin.

The 2024 total compares to 3.31 GW in 2023, 3.28 GW in 2022, 3.92 GW in 2021, and 5.5 GW in 2020. It marks the lowest annual deployment since 2018 when 2.59 GW were installed.

The agency initially forecasted installations of 2.7 GW to 2.8 GW for the year. South Korea's cumulative PV capacity stood at about 29.5 GW at the end of 2024.

The decline reflects the government’s nuclear-focused energy strategy, reduced solar budgets, and lower renewable portfolio standard targets, alongside higher targets for nuclear power generation.

“The budget for renewable energy support items from the power industry infrastructure fund was reduced by 42.3%, the budget for support for renewable energy deployment was reduced by 35.4%, the budget for feed-in tariff was reduced by 65.1%, and the budget for financial support for renewable energy was reduced by 27.5%,” the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme (PVPS) said in a recent report.

Ocean Winds has obtained the Electricity Business Licence (EBL) following review by the Electricity Regulatory Commission under the Ministry of Power and Energy (MOTIE) for its 1,125 MW Hanbando Offshore Wind Project.
Once the EBL has been obtained, the company will commence the Environmental Impact Assessment, site investigations and key engineering studies.

Hanbando Offshore Wind, our 1,125MW bottom-fixed project located in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Incheon, South Korea, has successfully been granted the Electricity Business License (EBL) by the Electricity Regulatory Commission under the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE).
