Copper prices rose for a fourth day on Wednesday to the highest in more than two years on expectations of strong economic growth in China and news of Chinese restrictions on scrap imports that would increase demand for imported refined copper.

A weaker dollar and forecasts of tight supplies supported price gains, said ABN AMRO analyst Casper Burgering.

OZ Minerals to build $700 mln copper mine in Australia

Reuters | Aug. 24, 2017

OZ Minerals Ltd said on Thursday it would begin construction of its Carrapateena copper mine in Australia, the country's largest undeveloped copper project, which it estimated would cost A$916 million ($724 million).

Copper is seen as one of the strongest growth commodities given its broad use in everything from plumbing and construction to appliances and electronics.

The world's biggest mining companies, led by BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, are actively looking to increase their exposure to copper.

OZ Minerals said Carrapateena, located about 160 kms (100 miles) from the Indian Ocean in South Australia state, would start producing in the fourth quarter of 2019, and yield an average of 65,000 tonnes of copper and 67,000 ounces of gold a year over 20 years.

"Carrapateena will be a robust, cash generating asset with expansion potential that sets OZ Minerals up for further growth," OZ Minerals Chairman Rebecca McGrath said in a statement.

"This decision is a significant enabling step in realising our strategy to become a low cost, multi-asset copper miner delivering value for all stakeholders," she said. ($1 = 1.2655 Australian dollars)

Friedland (president of Ivanoe Mine) confident Congo copper project will be bigger than Grasberg

Sept 13 2017

Robert Friedland is mining’s most consummate promoter and the executive chairman of Ivanhoe Mines yesterday grabbed the opportunity to advertise his latest venture – the Kamoa-Kakula project in the Congo – with his usual gusto.

Friedland transformed what could have been a set of exciting drill results into 43 holes of “global significance in the copper world”.

Not that he doesn’t have a lot to work with.

Ivanhoe’s May update lifted Kamoa-Kakula’s resource base above a billion tonnes for the first time and thanks to grades that are a distant memory for Chile’s giants, the in-situ value is an eye-watering $193 a tonne at today’s prices.

Friedland said he’s looking forward to giving shareholders a “substantial” resource expansion in time for Christmas:

“Kamoa-Kakula already is independently ranked as the fifth-largest copper deposit in the world. Seeing the unprecedented rate of growth of high-grade copper resources since drilling began at Kakula in May 2016, I am confident now that soon it will be among the top three.

“The remarkable consistency of the ultra-high-grade copper mineralization at the Kakula Discovery is unlike anything geologists have ever seen in the DRC’s Copperbelt. The discovery remains open in virtually all directions, so the real question is, how much bigger and better is Kakula going to get?” Mr. Friedland added.
Eleven of the 14 rigs at the project are drilling to define resources over the entire strike length of Kakula which now extends at least 12km – an increase of roughly 60% since May.

Ivanhoe is clearly working the project hard. An updated preliminary economic assessment for two mines of 6m tonnes per year each is expected during the fourth quarter as is a base case pre-feasibility study for the the first phase of development of the deposit which Ivanhoe discovered a decade ago.

If things pan out as predicted Kamoa-Kakula would only be topped by Escondida in Chile and Australia's Olympic Dam in terms of sheer size. The DRC project (close to another venerable copper name; Kolwezi) will at the same time overtake Grasberg in Indonesia and Chile's Collahuasi in the rankings.

Ivanhoe and joint venture partner Zijin Mining each own just under 40% of the project and the DRC government 20%. China's Zijin came on board at the end of 2015 for what now seems a steal at not much more than $400m. Even considering at the time copper was barely holding above $2 a pound ($4,500 a tonne).

On Tuesday the bellwether metal was trading just above $3 / $6,650 consolidating a sparkling run since the beginning of June.

Investors pile into Peru’s $2 billion Michiquillay copper project
State bidding agency has pushed back auction date to Dec. 20.

Cecilia Jamasmie | Oct. 16, 2017, Mining.com

More than 20 companies are hoping to grab one of Peru’s hottest copper assets, as the country readies to auction off the rights to develop it in December, authorities said Monday.

The $2 billion Michiquillay copper project, located in the country’s northern Cajamarca region, was originally scheduled to be auctioned off next month, but state bidding agency Proinversión decided to push back the date so that interested companies have more time to submit offers, it said in a statement (in Spanish).

Companies have until Nov. 2 to sign up for the auction. A contract for the project, said the agency, will be awarded on Dec. 20.

Michiquillay, projected to process close to 80,000 tonnes of copper ore a day, used to belong to Anglo American, but the mining giant pulled out of the project in late 2014 due to capital constraints.

Milpo, controlled by Brazil’s Votorantim Metals, later evaluated the project. But the miner withdrew from Michiquillay in March this year after Proinversión asked Milpo to modify its proposal for the mine’s development.

At the time, the company said the proposed revisions were not compatible with market conditions.

But much has changed in the copper sector since then. In fact, the timing for the planned auction couldn’t be better, as prices for the metal are rallying. On Monday, copper hit a fresh three-year high at $7,111.50 per tonne on bullish Chinese economic data.

According to Proinversión, mineral resources at Michiquillay are estimated at 1.1 billion tonnes of copper with an average grade of 0.629% and a cut-off of 0.4% copper. The asset also holds gold, silver and molybdenum.

The project is the first sizable mineral deposit to be offered up in a public auction in Peru in more than ten years.

While the government didn’t reveal any bidder’s name, precious metals miner Buenaventura has publicly expressed interest in Michiquillay, adding it could develop it by sharing infrastructure with two other proposed mines in the northern region of Cajamarca – Conga, which it owns with Newmont Mining, and the China Minmetals copper-gold project Galeno.

..............

Like many copper mines in Chile, El Teniente has suffered from years of declining ore grades.

The expansion will allow Codelco to maintain total output at approximately 450,000 tonnes of refined copper per year.

The expansion project is expected to add 50 years to the life of the mine and is slated to be completed in 2023.

India shuts Tamil Nadu smelting plant after deadly protests

24 May 2018 BBC

Officials in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu have ordered the closure of a major copper smelting plant on Wednesday.

The order came after police killed 13 people amid protests by residents in the port city of Tuticorin.

The state pollution control board disconnected electricity supply to the unit on Thursday morning.

However no one had been working at the Sterlite Copper subsidiary of Vedanta Resources for almost two months.

The company's operational licence had expired in April and the company was waiting for the government to renew it.

Residents who say the copper smelter is causing environmental damage, have been protesting against it for months.

Paramilitary forces are likely to be deployed after two days of clashes between police and local people.

According to the board, the company failed to adhere to certain agreed upon environmental conditions. The plant has been ordered to shutdown with immediate effect for the period of 2018-2023.

On Wednesday, a court also halted the proposed expansion of the company.

Vedanta has denied all the allegations against it and says it plans to double the capacity of its plant.

China's Chinalco starts $1.3bn expansion of Peru copper mine

Reuters June 04, 2018

BEIJING, June 4 (Reuters) – Aluminum Corp of China , known as Chinalco, at the weekend said it had started work on a $1.3 billion expansion of its Toromocho copper mine in central Peru. The investment will increase the mine's copper output by 45 percent by 2020, with the value of production exceeding $2 billion annually, Chinalco Chairman Ge Honglin said at a groundbreaking ceremony in Peruvian capital Lima late last week, according to a company statement issued on Saturday.

The statement gave no tonnage figures, but China's official Xinhua news agency said Chinalco wanted the expansion to take Toromocho's copper concentrate processing capacity to 157,000 tonnes a day and annual refined copper output to 300,000 tonnes.

China is the world's biggest copper consumer, while Peru, whose President Martin Vizcarra also attended the ceremony, is the second-biggest producer of the metal after South American neighbour Chile.

Chinalco is China's largest state-owned aluminium producer but also has some copper assets, including in China's southwestern Yunnan province.

It took control of Toromocho in 2007, bringing the project on stream in late 2013. The company had agreed a preliminary deal in November 2016 to take the development into a second phase through the $1.3 billion expansion.

The project, which is mined for silver and molybdenum as well as copper, contains 1.526 billion tonnes of ore, according to Chinalco's local unit Minera Chinalco Peru. The average copper content is 0.48 percent.

Chile injects $1bn into state-owned copper giant Codelco

Cecilia Jamasmie 29 juin 2018

Chile’s government is giving state-owned Codelco $1 billion in "extraordinary" capitalization to help it fund an ambitious plan aimed at upgrading its aging mines and dealing with dwindling ore grades.

The country’s mining minister, Baldo Prokurica, said the backing was essential for Codelco to keep up production numbers and so remain as the world’s No.1 copper miner, Diario Financiero reports (in Spanish).
The figure, though significant, is minor when taken in the context of Codelco’s 10-year investment strategy from 2020, originally pegged at $25 billion (now sitting at a whooping $39bn).

In March, the company received environmental approval to build a $1 billion desalination plant, which will be used to supply water to its operations in the country’s northern region.

The facility, the second-largest desalination plant in the South American country after the one that supplies BHP’s Escondida, will allow Codelco expand its Radomiro Tomic mine.

The miner, which hands over all of its profits to the state, holds vast copper deposits, accounting for 10% of the world's known proven and probable reserves and about 11% of the global annual copper output with 1.8 million metric tonnes of production.

Last year, it contributed nearly $3 billion to Chile's coffers.
