Vale Indonesia, Huayou sign deal to build Pomalaa nickel plant

Reuters | April 28, 2022

Nickel miner PT Vale Indonesia said on Thursday it has signed a framework agreement with China’s Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt to build a plant on Sulawesi island producing nickel minerals used in electric vehicle batteries.

The two companies agreed to develop a facility known for a process called high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) which would have a potential mixed hydroxide precipitate production capacity of 120,000 tonnes of nickel content per year, Vale said in a statement.

Under the agreement, Huayou will develop the Pomalaa project in Southeast Sulawesi and Vale will have rights to acquire up to 30% stake in the project, Vale said, adding that it would supply nickel ore for the project.

Vale had previously been working with Japanese miner and smelter Sumitomo Metal Mining Co (SMM) on a feasibility study for the Pomalaa project since 2012.

SMM said on Monday it has decided to discontinue the study because of a disagreement with Vale Indonesia.

“Huayou has proven its track record in HPAL construction and operations in Indonesia,” Vale chief executive Febriany Eddy said in the statement.

Huayou started trial production for its joint venture HPAL plant in other parts of Sulawesi late last year.

Horizonte kicks off construction of Araguia nickel mine in Brazil

Cecilia Jamasmie | May 20, 2022

Horizonte Minerals has kicked off construction of its Araguaia nickel mine in northern Brazil, which is set to produce 29,000 tonnes of the battery metal a year, mostly destined to supply the stainless steel market.

The fully-funded project, which would take about two years to build, will initially generate 14,500 tonnes of nickel a year.

Construction includes an open pit and a processing plant, which will produce ferronickel over an estimated 28-year period.

Araguaia is considered a key project to diversify Brazil’s mining sector, which is centred on iron ore.

“Whilst we are facing inflationary pressures along with all other global projects, to date we have been able to award approximately 50% of our pre-contingency project direct capex on budget, which is a very positive result,” chief executive Jeremy Martin said in the statement.

Horizonte is also advancing a feasibility study for the Vermelho nickel-cobalt project, also in the Pará state. The asset expected to yield roughly 15,000 tonnes of nickel and 600 tonnes of cobalt a year in a first phase.

Vermelho’s capacity could ramp up to 24,000 tonnes of nickel per year over a 38-year mine life.

Brazil has estimated reserves of 16 million tonnes of nickel and is currently the world’s eighth largest producer, with output of 100,000 tonnes in 2021.

Global nickel usage surged by 16.2% last year driven on the back of soaring demand from both the stainless steel and battery end-use sectors.

The result was a supply shortfall of 168,000 tonnes, the largest production deficit in at least a decade, according to the International Nickel Study Group’s latest statistical snapshot on the market.

China CNGR expands nickel investments in Indonesia to meet EV demand

Reuters | May 18, 2022

China’s CNGR Advanced Material Co Ltd will invest in three new projects in Indonesia to produce nickel matte, aiming to increase annual capacity by 120,000 tonnes to meet increasing demand for the product used in making electric car batteries.

In a filing to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, the battery material maker said on Wednesday that three of its Hong Kong units signed agreements with a Singapore-based Rigqueza International Pte Ltd to jointly invest in the three projects in Weda Bay industrial park.

Each involves investment of $420 million and aims to produce nickel matte with 40,000 tonnes of nickel content per year via four production lines, the filing said.

Nickel matte is an intermediate product that can be processed into battery-grade nickel.

CNGR had already invested in two nickel matte projects with Rigqueza last year in the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, with total annual capacity of 60,000 tonnes. The company also reached agreement with nickel giant Tsingshan Holding Group, which will supply it with 40,000 tonnes of the product.

“Both parties are continuously optimistic about the nickel matte industry,” CNGR said in the statement, adding that the investments are expected to further secure company’s resources and lower the costs of producing battery materials.

Registered in Singapore, Rigqueza will own a 30% stake in each of the three new projects, CNGR said.

The Chinese company did not disclose more information about its partner, but said Rigqueza’s main responsibilities included coordination with the Indonesian government, helping to secure local approvals and financing.

CNGR could not be contacted for further comment.

Nickel prices on the London Metal Exchange doubled to a record level of over $100,000 a tonne within an hour in March as Russia-Ukraine conflict fanned an already rallying market. They eased to around $26,365 per tonne on Tuesday.

Vale advances Canadian nickel sulphate project

By NS Energy Staff Writer 10 Jun 2022

The proposed project in Bécancour, Quebec would leverage current and future production of low carbon and high-grade nickel from Vale's world-class Canadian operations

Vale SA informs it has concluded the prefeasibility study for a proposed nickel sulphate project in Quebec, Canada, representing an important milestone for the project development. This strategic initiative highlights Vale’s focus on delivering low carbon and high-purity nickel products into the growing electric vehicle industry.

The proposed project in Bécancour, Quebec would be the first-of-its-kind fully domestic nickel sulphate facility for the North American market, leveraging current and future production of low carbon and high-grade nickel from Vale’s world-class Canadian operations. Based on feasibility work to date, the project would have annual capacity to process 25,000 tonnes of contained nickel into nickel sulphate, the chemical compound used in the production of pre-cathode active materials for nickel-based lithium-ion batteries. The project’s final investment decision and schedule is contingent on a range of factors including downstream battery supply chain integration and requirements, as well as board and regulatory approvals.

“This is a key validation for a project that offers both diversified sales and an accelerated entry point into North America’s burgeoning electric vehicle supply chain,” said Deshnee Naidoo, Executive Vice President of Vale Base Metals. “We look forward to continued discussions with potential partners, as well as with the Government of Quebec and the Government of Canada, to bring this strategic project to fruition,” Naidoo said.

LG begins building nickel processing plants in Indonesia
The company plans to invest around $9.8bn to produce electric vehicle batteries in the country.

June 9, 2022

South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution (LGES) has started building two nickel processing plants in Indonesia, as reported by Reuters.

The work forms part of the company’s wider $9.8bn investment plan to produce electric vehicle batteries in the country.

LGES officials said that the company will invest $3.5bn to build a smelter, which will be equipped to produce 150,000t of nickel sulfate a year.

The company will also build a $2.4bn factory in Batang industrial park in Central Java, which will produce precursor and cathode.

These materials will serve as the main raw material for a planned 200GWh battery cell plant.

The facility will have an annual production capacity of 220,000t of precursor and 42,000t of cathode.

The battery cell plant is planned to be built with a $3.6bn investment in the industrial town of Karawang in West Java.

Reuters quoted LGES President Lee Bang-Soo as saying that the company would sign an agreement with Indonesian state miner Aneka Tambang (Antam) in September this year.

Under this agreement, the two companies will jointly invest in a nickel mine in the eastern island of Halmahera.

The $300m mine is expected to produce 16 million tonnes of nickel ore.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo said that Indonesia aims to become a producer of major nickel-based products and already has the world’s biggest nickel reserves.

In 2020, the country ceased nickel ore exports in an effort to attract foreign investment to develop its downstream industry.

Last year, LGES and Hyundai Motor Group began building a $1.1bn electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Bekasi, West Java.

President Widodo said the plant was the first EV battery facility in South-East Asia and highlighted the government’s commitment to using its nickel resources to develop downstream industries.

BHP signs MOU for nickel supply with Ford

Staff Writer | July 21, 2022 |

The world’s biggest miner, BHP (NYSE: BHP) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding for nickel supply with Ford Motor Company.

The targeted multi-year nickel supply agreement could start as early as 2025 and may involve additional commodities over time, the miner said, adding that it will explore options to supply Ford Motor Company with nickel from its Nickel West asset in Western Australia.

The companies are exploring ways to make battery supply chains more sustainable and efficient, including opportunities for further alignment on best practice and raising ESG performance transparency, BHP said.

“BHP produces some of the lowest carbon intensity nickel in the world, and we are working hard to reduce GHG emissions from our nickel operations even further,” BHP’s chief commercial officer Vandita Pant said in the media statement.

“Sustainable, reliable production of quality nickel will be essential to meeting demand from automakers like Ford Motor Company who are focused on producing their vehicles in an increasingly sustainable way,” Pant said.

According to third-party analysis, BHP’s Nickel West asset has one of the world’s lowest operational carbon emissions intensities for nickel mining operations.

“Demand for nickel in batteries is estimated to grow four-fold over the next decade, in large part to support the world’s rising demand for electric vehicles,” Pant said.

“While what we produce is essential, never before has how we produce and manage our products through our supply chain been more important. Customers increasingly care about where products come from: their environmental and ethical footprints, as well as the efficiency and transparency of their supply chains.”

The announcement with Ford Motor Company follows the signing of supply and collaboration agreements with nickel product end-users including Tesla and PPES & Toyota Tsusho Corporation.

Canada Nickel develops new method for accelerated carbon capture

Staff Writer | July 20, 2022

Image
Site of the Crawford nickel-cobalt sulphide project near Timmins. Canada Nickel

Canada Nickel Company (TSXV: CNC) has received results of a laboratory test program for a new method of accelerated carbon capture – in-process tailings (IPT) carbonation that the company believes has transformative potential.

Canada Nickel is currently advancing its flagship Crawford project in northern Ontario, which is said to contain the fifth-largest nickel sulphide resource globally, following a recent update.

The project’s preliminary economic assessment (PEA), based on prior resource estimates, outlined a 25-year operation that would produce 842,000 tonnes of nickel, plus iron and chrome byproducts of 21 million and 1.5 million tonnes respectively.

Additional opportunities have been identified to turn this into a net-zero carbon footprint operation, following the carbon footprint carbon sequestration potential of the tailings and waste rock at Crawford.

Geologically, the project is hosted in ultramafic rock, which naturally absorbs and sequesters carbon dioxide (CO2). The potential to actively capture and sequester carbon was a key consideration in Canada Nickel’s acquisition of the 42 km2 of target ultramafic rocks in the Timmins area of Ontario, which it believes could anchor a zero-carbon industrial cluster.

To speed up the naturally occurring carbon absorption process, Canada Nickel has developed a simple active process that utilizes tailings as generated in the milling process and injects a concentrated source of CO2 for a brief period of time. This novel process for accelerated mineral carbonation, known as IPT carbonation, which fixes CO2 geologically while the tailings are still in the processing circuit, rather than after they have been finally deposited.

Giga Metals, Mitsubishi to jointly develop Turnagain nickel project in Canada

By NS Energy Staff Writer 16 Aug 2022

Mitsubishi will obtain a 15% stake for C$8m ($6m) cash and Giga will get 85%, in exchange for contributing the related assets for the project, while also serving as operator of the joint venture company

Canada-based Giga Metals and Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp. (MC), have teamed up to jointly develop the Turnagain nickel deposit, located in northern British Columbia, Canada.

The two companies have agreed to form a new joint venture company, dubbed Hard Creek Nickel Corp., for the development of Turnagain nickel project.

Under the terms of the agreement, MC will obtain a 15% stake in the JV for C$8m ($6m) cash, while Giga will get 85% in exchange for contributing the related assets for the project.

The Canadian company will operate the joint venture, with support from MC, reporting to the board of directors of the new JV company.

In addition, it will work on a Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) for the Turnagain project, which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2023.

The proposed JV transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including approval of the TSX Venture Exchange, along with regulatory and third-party approvals.

Giga president Martin Vydra said: “We are very pleased to welcome Mitsubishi Corporation, a global trading and investment company, as a strategic partner for the development of Turnagain project.

“We are excited about partnering with MC due to their excellent reputation, expertise in mining, extensive financing capabilities, experience in marketing, and the values that they share with Giga regarding environmental, social and governance issues.”

Turnagain project is located 70km east of the Dease Lake in Northern British Columbia, Canada, and is considered as one of the world’s biggest undeveloped sulfide nickel deposits.

The two companies intend to jointly develop the Turnagain as an eco-friendly nickel project.

Giga said that Hard Creek will continue its work to explore the viability of the tailings to sequester CO2 from the atmosphere to achieve a carbon neutral project.

In addition, it will work closely with local communities and the related First Nations to develop the Turnagain project, to make it beneficial for all stakeholders in British Columbia.

US-based engineering services firm Tetra Tech will lead the next stage of engineering and is currently conducting optimisation studies prior to a PFS, after completion of funding.

The PFS will model nickel and cobalt production in concentrate, similar to the preliminary economic assessment (PEA), published in February last year.

Furthermore, Giga aims to add a pressure oxidation circuit to convert the concentrate to Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), which is currently in demand by battery manufacturers.

Giga Metals Corporation president Martin Vydra said: “The potential addition of a pressure oxidation circuit to the flow sheet will provide flexibility in terms of the form of nickel and cobalt the project produces.

“We know from discussions with battery manufacturers and automobile OEMs that this flexibility is important to the end users. Our project should be well positioned to provide whatever the customers want.”
