Drilling down on the economics of B.C.'s Turnagain nickel mine
Pre-feasibility study confirms high grades of nickel, long mine life

Nelson Bennett 23 sept 2023

The multi-billion dollar Turnagain nickel mine in the Golden Triangle of Northwestern B.C. would have a long life, high grades and low carbon intensity, according to a pre-feasibility study released today.

The Turnagain project is one of two major nickel mines proposed for B.C., the other being the Baptiste Nickel project.

The Turnagain deposit is owned by Hard Creek Nickel Corp., a joint venture between Giga Metals (TSX-V:GIGA) and Mitsubishi, which has 15 per cent stake.

With a total capital cost of $4.8 billion over the life of the mine, Giga Metals will need other investors on board to develop the mine.

“We have put this report together with strategic investors in mind,” Giga Metals CEO Mark Jarvis told BIV News

According to a pre-feasibility study released today, the mine – located 65 kilometres east of Dease Lake in Tahltan and Kaska Dena territory – would have an initial capital cost of $2.6 billion and sustaining capital costs over 30 years of $2.2 billion.

The mine would require a new 78-kilometre access road and a 160-kilometre transmission line to tie into the Northwest Transmission Line. It would be mined as an open-pit operation.

The pre-feasibility study says the mine would have high grades of nickel and cobalt and a long mine life of 30 years.

“The PFS demonstrates a long-life, large-scale project that will deliver high-grade nickel sulphide concentrate with no significant deleterious impurities,” the study says.

The total estimated reserves are 1.9 million tonnes of contained nickel, with an expectation of producing concentrates averaging 18 per cent nickel and 1 per cent cobalt, Jarvis said.

“We’re looking at average production of a little over 35,000 tonnes per year of nickel and a little over 2,000 tonnes per year of cobalt,” he said.

“Interestingly, that 18 to 1 ratio, that’s similar to the chemistry that’s currently being used for batteries for electric vehicles. So if you want to build cathodes out of this material, you’ve got the right amount of nickel and cobalt.”

Giga Metals is highlighting the fact the mine would have a relatively low carbon emissions intensity, compared to other nickel mines.

For one thing, it would use clean hydro power, by tying into the Northwest Transmission Line. For another, the company is exploring a tailings management approach that would accelerate a natural carbon mineralization process that permanently sequesters CO2 in the form of carbonates.

“It is a significant source of low-carbon intensity nickel and cobalt in a form that is very amenable to processing to cathode material,” Jarvis said.

Atlas Materials secures $27m for new nickel processing technology for EV batteries
According to Atlas, the new technology for processing nickel ore is low-emission and produces no waste.

Annabel Cossins-Smith September 28, 2023

US-based critical minerals company Atlas Materials has raised $27m for its new technology that enables the processing of low-grade nickel for use in electric vehicle (EV) batteries, the start-up said on Thursday.

The company has developed a new way to treat saprolite, a type of low-grade nickel ore usually used as a component in stainless steel, so that the metal can be used in EV batteries. The process is low-emission and produces no waste, the company added.

Atlas plans to build a pilot plant in North America to test the technology’s capabilities. Currently, the company is still considering three possible locations in either Canada or the US, CEO Jeremy Ley told Reuters. The production plant should be operational by 2027 with an initial annual nickel output capacity of 1,800 tonnes, Ley added.

Saprolite nickel ore, which only usually contains approximately 1.5–2% nickel, currently accounts for more than one-third of global nickel ore deposits. Atlas’ technology to treat saprolite ore works by incorporating the metal into mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) to make it usable within batteries. The process uses hydrochloric acid and caustic soda to leach the ore but does not require a high-pressure or high-temperature environment, unlike traditional hydrometallurgy or pyrometallurgy processes, and does not create any waste products.

Two by-products are left during MHP production: magnesium hydroxide and a material that can be used as a cement substitute for buildings. Atlas plans to sell both, Ley said. “We have no waste and we can take all the products to market and use up all of the ore instead of creating large tailing ponds.”

Some leaching plants designed to treat similar-grade nickel ore into MHP for EV batteries have been launched in Indonesia, but these processes generate toxic waste. In March, Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo pledged a clean-up of the nickel mining industry in the country amid concerns over the harmful environmental and social impacts of producing the metal.

“This would be the first production of MHP in North America,” Ley said, adding that the company expects to source its ore from Pacific French overseas territory New Caledonia. Talks with major mining companies about future collaborations are ongoing, he added.

Investors in the Series A Funding round for Atlas included the Grantham Environmental Trust and Voyager Ventures, bringing total financing for the company to $33m, Ley said. The money will be used to develop designs for the pilot plant in North America, but further funding will be required for the construction phase.

Gros surcouts annoncés pour la construction de la mine de Nickel Araguaia. L' action du minier s'effondre.
Horizonte stock plunges on Araguaia costs blowout

2nd October 2023

The share price of Horizonte Minerals fell 51% on Monday, as the London-listed mining company announced that the costs at its Araguaia nickel project, in Brazil, will increase by at least 35% and that first production will be delayed.

The company previously expected the mine to begin operating in early 2024, but now expects to achieve that milestone by the third quarter of next year.

The cost and schedule changes follow detailed engineering and construction work, along with a comprehensive cost review, that resulted in changes to the design and execution scope.

In October last year, Horizonte increased the capital expenditure (capex) for Araguaia to $537-million.

The firm explained that the final detailed engineering work had added additional scope items linked to the major equipment packages, made several enhanced design changes from the original engineering study and identified the requirement for additional civil works and quantities.

Further, changes had been required with selected suppliers, which failed to deliver to the project timeframe, adding further cost pressures.

Horizonte has engaged Reta Engenharia to undertake an independent review of the remaining capex and schedule, incorporating the change in scope, material and quantity variations, increased project duration to first metal and associated costs, and additional working capital requirements. The company has also undertaken a detailed review of the ramp-up and operational costs.

An update will be published by the middle of the current quarter.

Canada Nickel unveils positive BFS for Crawford nickel sulphide project in Canada
The BSF results confirm significantly improved economics from its Preliminary Economic Analysis (PEA), increasing the after-tax NPV8% from $2.5bn to $2.6bn, and IRR from 17.1% to 18.3%, with projected carbon capture and storage tax credits

By NS Energy Staff Writer 13 Oct 2023

Canada Nickel Company has unveiled results from the Bankable Feasibility Study (BFS) for its wholly owned Crawford nickel sulphide project, located in Timmins, Ontario, Canada.

The BFS was prepared by industrial engineering and consultation provider Ausenco Engineering Canada in accordance with National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101) guidelines.

Its results confirm significantly improved economics from its Preliminary Economic Analysis (PEA).

The BSF results increase the after-tax NPV8% from the initial $2.5bn to $2.6bn, and IRR from 17.1% to 18.3%, with projected carbon capture and storage tax credits.

Crawford is expected to become the world’s second-largest nickel reserve, one of Canada’s largest carbon storage facilities and a net negative contributor of CO2 over the project life.

Canada Nickel CEO Mark Selby said: “This bankable feasibility study is a significant milestone for Crawford and a major step forward in demonstrating the value of our Timmins Nickel District and its potential to anchor a Zero Carbon Industrial Cluster in the Timmins-Cochrane region.

“Crawford is poised to be a leader in the energy transition through the large-scale production of critical minerals, including nickel and cobalt, and is expected to become the sole North American producer of chromium, while also supporting Canada’s climate objectives through industrial-scale carbon capture and storage.”

“We are fully focused on pursuing our next milestones of obtaining permits, developing a financing package, and moving towards a production decision by mid-2025, with a goal of first production by the end of 2027.”

According to the BFS, Crawford will be developed as a conventional open pit mine operation, planned to be constructed in two phases.

The initial phase comprising a 60ktpd throughput mill is estimated to cost around $1.9bn, and the second phase will double mill throughput to 120ktpd at a cost of $1.6bn.

It will be commissioned during the fourth year after a 24-month construction period.

The third phase is expected after 30 years, when the pits are already depleted, and the 120ktpd milling rate is satisfied from stockpiled lower-grade ore.

Crawford project will require peak capital of $1.7bn to build both phases, which is lower than the initial capital cost estimate of $1.9bn, with an overall payback period of 5.6 years.

The Canadian government will provide tax credits of more than $1bn over the project life, including both Critical Minerals and expected Carbon Capture tax credits.

The project is expected to produce 1.6 million tonnes of nickel, 24kt of cobalt, 490koz of palladium and platinum, 58 million tonnes of iron and 2.8 million tonnes of chromium over a lifetime of 41 years.

Indonesia’s high-grade nickel ore reserves may be depleted in 6 years

Reuters | October 27, 2023

Reserves of high-grade nickel ore in top producer Indonesia may be depleted in around six years, a miners’ association has warned, risking shortages of the material used to make stainless steel.

Indonesia’s high-grade 1.7% nickel ore is mainly used for the country’s nickel pig iron (NPI) production, a feedstock for stainless steel, while lower grade is used to make products for the electric vehicles batteries.

“The government needs to make comprehensive control efforts for the resilience of nickel reserves, so that it can sustain the downstream strategy and increase added value,” Meidy Katrin Lengkey, secretary general at the Indonesian Nickel Miners Association, said in a presentation, a copy of which was seen by Reuters.

The presentation was at a meeting of the International Nickel Study Group, an industry body, in Lisbon on Oct. 2.

Nickel mining and smelting has become a major part of Indonesia’s economy, with billions of dollars in global investment flowing into the country after the government banned exports of unprocessed ore in 2020.

The lifespan of any given mineral ore’s reserves is typically an estimate, as new exploration can increase their size while new technology can boost retrieval rates.

One solution for Indonesia would be to promote domestic processing of lower-grade nickel ore, which could last for 80 years, Lengkey told Reuters, adding that there were unexplored areas in Indonesia which could also yield further reserves.

Indonesia considered taxing exports of NPI products to encourage development of its battery industry in 2021. However, the plan has been delayed while the country works on creating a nickel price index.

The country is on track to mine more than half of the world’s nickel and produce a half of nickel intermediates in 2023, Citi said in a research this week.

“With such a huge global dependency on supply from the country there is a risk this emboldens Indonesia to exercise its dominant position to behave like a de-facto swing producer by taking actions to constrain supply,” Citi added.

“This risk increases in a lower-price environment.”

Prices for nickel on the London Metal Exchange are down 39% so far this year due to surpluses as Indonesia ramps up production.

Ford takes stake in Indonesia nickel project

Bloomberg News | December 5, 2023

Ford Motor Co. will take a direct stake in a battery-nickel plant under construction in Indonesia, deepening its role in the supply chain as carmakers try to secure materials for electric vehicles.

The US automaker joins PT Vale Indonesia and China’s Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co. as investors in a project to make an annual 120,000 tons of nickel chemicals for EV batteries, according to a joint statement from the companies. The Pomalaa plant is expected to start commercial production in 2026, with total investment at 67.5 trillion rupiah ($4.5 billion).

The statement did not disclose each company’s share of the investment.

Global carmakers are racing to ensure long-term flows of materials like lithium, cobalt and nickel as demand balloons. While direct investments in mines or refineries are still rare, General Motors Co. has invested in a US lithium miner while Tesla Inc. is interested in buying a lithium producer.

Indonesia is becoming a major source of battery-ready nickel following a wave of refinery investments in the minerals-rich country, mostly by Chinese companies. Ford, which plans to make 2 million EVs a year by the end of 2026, already had an agreement with Huayou to take battery materials derived from the Pomalaa plant.

“This framework gives Ford direct control to source the nickel we need — in one of the industry’s lowest-cost ways — and allows us to ensure the nickel is mined in line with our company’s sustainability targets,” Lisa Drake, vice president for Ford Model e EV industrialization, said in the statement.

Pomalaa is a long-delayed project, and an example of earlier efforts to use “high-pressure acid leaching” technology, or HPAL, to make nickel chemicals from low-grade ores. There are now a number of HPAL plants ramping up in the Southeast Asian nation, but there are still concerns about their environmental credentials.

“The technology remains difficult to develop and ramp up and manage, compared to other conventional nickel production methods and processes,” said Allan Ray Restauro, analyst at BloombergNEF.

Lifezone Metals updates mineral resource for Kabanga nickel project

Staff Writer | December 7, 2023

Lifezone Metals, which is 17% owned by BHP, announced on Thursday a mineral resource update for the Kabanga nickel project in northwest Tanzania.

The company reported attributable measured and indicated resources totalling 43.6 million tonnes grading 2.02% nickel, 0.28% copper and 0.16% cobalt (2.57% nickel-equivalent). That represents a 69% increase relative to the February 2023 mineral resource estimate.

Attributable inferred resources totalled 17.5 million tonnes grading 2.23% nickel, 0.31% copper and 0.16% cobalt (2.79% nickel-equivalent).

According to Lifezone, around 71% of Kabanga’s resource tonnage is now classified in the higher-confidence measured and indicated categories relative to inferred.

The Kabanga project is believed to be one of the world’s largest and highest-grade undeveloped nickel sulphide deposits.

Lifezone shares were up 0.2% to $9.61 on Thursday morning in New York, valuing the company at $768 million.
