Wealth Minerals delivers first resource estimate for Ollagüe lithium project in Chile

Staff Writer | January 17, 2023 |

Lithium developer Wealth Minerals (TSXV: WML) reached a significant milestone on Tuesday with the release of the first resource estimate for its Ollagüe project in Chile.

This NI 43-101 resource estimate — prepared by independent consultants Montgomery & Associates — is based on the company’s geophysical survey and 2022 drill program, consisting of four vertical holes totalling 1,111 metres. It also includes drilling and geophysical data from previous operators on the Ollagüe project.

The initial resource, as estimated by Montgomery, contains 741,000 tonnes of LCE (lithium carbonate equivalent) grading 175 ml/L in the indicated category and 701,000 tonnes LCE grading 185 ml/L in the inferred category.

These estimates will likely change as more information becomes available, according to Wealth Minerals. The 2022 program has substantially increased the company’s understanding of the “evaporitic basins” that define the project area, which has allowed the estimation of this initial lithium resource, it says.

Wealth Minerals anticipates that additional drilling may encounter lithium brine in the deeper parts of the aquifer, potentially adding to the overall resource. Additional characterization in the northmost concessions of the project could also add additional resources in the measured and indicated category.

The company will now begin the next phase of development planning, engaging with its engineering partner FLSmidth to prepare a scoping study. Meanwhile, the geological team is planning how to best expand the resource and raise the category of the resource in the next drilling campaign.

“The Ollagüe project is well suited for lithium production because of its favorable permeability, resource size and expansion potential. Indeed, in terms of LCE resource size, the Ollagüe project now ranks among its peers in terms of a potential future operation,” CEO Henk van Alphen said in a news release.

The Ollagüe property consists of 6,400 hectares located in northern Chile, Region II, near the Chile-Bolivia border and approximately 200 km due north from Atacama. Recent drilling activity by a peer company in the area returned lithium grades up to 480 mg/L, while surface sampling has returned lithium grades as high as 1,140 mg/L.

Shares of Wealth Minerals were down 10% as of noon ET following the initial Ollagüe resource estimate. The company has a market capitalization of C$121.9 million ($91m).

Elise Pontoizeau 26 Janvier 2023 Usine Nouvelle

Bolivia selects CATL-led consortium to develop lithium reserves
The CBC consortium will undertake direct lithium extraction from the Uyuni and Oruro salt flats in Bolivia.

January 23, 2023

Bolivia has selected a consortium led by Chinese battery giant CATL to develop the country’s huge lithium reserves, reported Reuters.

The move is expected to unlock the country’s potential as a supplier of lithium for batteries, which are needed for the global transition to electric vehicles (EVs).

Selected following a bidding process, the consortium, which is known as CBC, will be responsible for undertaking direct lithium extraction from the country’s Uyuni and Oruro salt flats.

The bidding round attracted interest from companies that included US-based Lilac Solutions, Russia’s Uranium One Group and three bidders from China.

CBC also includes mining giant CMOC and will hold the rights to develop two lithium plants, each with an annual production capacity of up to 25,000 tons of battery-grade lithium carbonate.

According to the US Geological Survey, Bolivia’s iconic salt flats hold lithium resources of 21 million tons.

Bolivian President Luis Arce was cited by the news agency as saying that the first phase of the project would involve an investment of more than $1bn from CBC.

Arce is also in talks with other foreign firms for potential partnerships.

“Today begins the era of industrialisation of Bolivian lithium,” Arce stated.

The country aims to commence the export of lithium batteries in the first quarter of 2025, reported BBC News.

Mexico seeking accord with lithium firm in Sonora state

Reuters | January 25, 2023

Image
The Sonora project is expected to produce 35,000 tonnes of lithium per year at full tilt. (Image courtesy of Bacanora Minerals | Twitter)

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Tuesday his government wanted to reach agreement with a company over lithium mining in a northern state that will underline Mexico’s right to exploit the valuable mineral.

Lopez Obrador did not name the firm, but China’s Ganfeng 002460.SZ has been developing a major lithium project in the northern border state of Sonora, where it is hoping to produce 35,000 tonnes of lithium a year.

Stressing that lithium belonged to “the nation”, Lopez Obrador said he would visit Sonora and observed that there was a company that had done exploratory work in a “very small area.”

“So there’s an effort underway to reach an agreement with them so as not to start a legal process, but to seek an agreement, a conciliation,” he told a news conference.

Lopez Obrador said Mexico’s Economy Ministry was looking at the matter. The ministry did not immediately clarify whether the company was Ganfeng when asked for comment.

“They want to have the mine, but they don’t have the permits,” Lopez Obrador said of the firm, underlining that while Mexican law would be enforced, his government will work to “convince, persuade, reach agreements, not impose anything.”

Lopez Obrador said recently his administration would next month grant the first concessions for mineral exploitation to a new state-run company dedicated to lithium exploitation.

General Motors invests in Lithium Americas

Feb 1, 2023

General Motors is investing in the lithium producer Lithium Americas, thus securing access to the Thacker Pass mine in Nevada, the largest known source of lithium in the USA and the third largest in the world. In addition, GM has secured its supply for another component for its electric cars with a German company.

Under the agreement, GM will invest $650 million (about €597 million) in Lithium Americas. However, it will be some time before the first deliveries, as the mining for lithium carbonate from the Thacker Pass mine will only begin in the second half of 2026.

Lithium Americas estimates that the lithium extracted and processed from the project will be enough for up to one million electric vehicles annually. As General Motors’ GMC Hummer EV uses a comparatively large battery with more than 200 kWh of energy content, the lithium may not reach the entire 1 million BEVs. On the other hand, the upcoming Ultium models will use smaller batteries.

What is clear, however, is that Lithium Americas will not supply any more customers from the Nevada mine for now – GM has secured “exclusive access to Phase 1 production,” according to the release. “GM has secured all the battery material we need to build more than 1 million EVs annually in North America in 2025, and our future production will increasingly draw from domestic resources like the site in Nevada we’re developing with Lithium Americas,” said GM CEO Mary Barra. “Direct sourcing critical EV raw materials and components from suppliers in North America and free-trade-agreement countries helps make our supply chain more secure, helps us manage cell costs, and creates jobs.”

As is often the case with raw material sourcing, it’s a future project because the mine is not yet operational. As such, Jonathan Evans, president and CEO of Lithium Americas, refers to the agreement with GM as a “major milestone in moving Thacker Pass toward production.”

Investment still conditional

GM will not release the funds immediately, and the money will be split into two tranches, with additional conditions each. The funds for the first tranche will be held in escrow until certain conditions are met, including the outcome of the Record of Decision currently pending in US District Court. When the conditions are met, the funds will be released and GM will become a shareholder of Lithium Americas. GM expects this to happen in late 2023. The second investment tranche is to be made in Lithium Americas’ US-focused lithium business following the separation of the US and Argentina businesses and is “subject to similar conditions.” One of them is that Lithium Americas must raise sufficient capital “to fund Thacker Pass development expenditures.”

If that happens, all the lithium from the first phase will go to GM and be processed into electric car batteries at GM’s four planned cell factories – one in operation, two under construction and one in planning. After the first phase, GM also has a right of first offer for Phase 2 production.

Lithium’s historic rally fuels record profits for China’s miners
China’s big lithium miners are set to reap record earnings after booming demand for the electric vehicle battery material sent prices surging to an all-time high last year.

Bloomberg News | January 30, 2023 |

Tianqi Lithium Corp. forecasted preliminary net income for 2022 skyrocketed more than 10-fold, while rival Ganfeng Lithium Group Co. is predicting a surge of as much as 321%.

The bumper profits come as Chinese prices for lithium carbonate, a refined form of the material used in EV batteries, peaked in November after jumping around 15 times from lows in 2020. The global push toward an electrified transport fleet has fired up consumption but supplies have struggled to keep pace.

Image

Lithium producers have unveiled a flurry of expansion plans to meet the battery boom, while takeover activity is also picking up in the sector. This month, Tianqi’s joint venture with IGO Ltd. said it will purchase Sydney-listed Essential Metals Ltd., while Ganfeng announced plans to spend 15 billion yuan ($2.22 billion) building two battery plants in China.

Battery manufacturers and automakers, meanwhile, have complained lithium has become too expensive over the past year, crimping margins. Lithium-ion battery costs rose for the first time last year in the EV era, according to BloombergNEF.

While prices have softened in recent weeks, there are still risks this year if miners from Chile to China and Australia hit hurdles in producing daunting volumes of new supply.

Tianqi Lithium is forecasting 2022 preliminary net income surged 1,011%-1,132% from a year earlier to a range of 23.1 billion yuan to 25.6 billion yuan. Ganfeng Lithium reported on Sunday its preliminary net income could climb 244%-321% to a range of 18 billion yuan to 22 billion yuan. The companies are yet to announce when they will report official results.

US judge orders waste rock study for Thacker Pass lithium project

Reuters | February 7, 2023

A US judge ordered regulators to reconsider part of the permit approving Lithium Americas Corp’s Thacker Pass lithium mine project in Nevada, though the mixed ruling allows construction to begin and rejects claims that the project would cause unnecessary harm to the environment or wildlife.

Shares of Vancouver, British Columbia-based Lithium Americas rose 9% to $25.52 on Tuesday after the ruling, which was issued Monday evening.

The proposed mine would be North America’s largest source of lithium for electric vehicle batteries and a key pillar in US President Joe Biden’s efforts to wean his country off Chinese supplies of the metal.

General Motors Co signed a $650 million deal last week to help develop the project, an agreement that hinges in part on a positive outcome in the long-running court case.

In a 49-page ruling, Chief Judge Miranda Du of the federal court in Reno, Nevada, ordered the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to determine whether Lithium Americas has the right to dump waste rock at the site, just south of Nevada’s border with Oregon.

Du, however, did not vacate a 2021 decision by then-President Donald Trump to approve the mine. The ruling can be appealed.

Much of the US mining industry is ruled by an 1872 law that gives companies wide berth to extract metals on federal lands. However, an appeals court ruled last year in an unrelated case that miners do not necessarily have the right to store waste rock or erect buildings on federal land not containing valuable minerals.

Du ordered the BLM to determine whether roughly 1,300 acres (530 hectares) at the Thacker Pass site where Lithium Americas hopes to store waste rock – a byproduct of the mining process – contains lithium. Federal officials had told the court last month they believe the entire site contains lithium.

Lithium Americas is meeting on Tuesday with the BLM to begin the review, which should take no longer than six months, Chief Executive Jon Evans said in an interview. “There is evidence in the record of lithium mineralization throughout the project area,” he said. “This is an easy fix.”

Site preparation should begin almost immediately, with heavy construction likely to start this summer and last about three years, Evans said.

Du also rejected claims from the Reno Sparks Indian Colony and other Native American tribes that they were not properly consulted about the project and its potential effects on cultural and historical sites.

Representatives for General Motors, the Reno Sparks Indian Colony and several environmental groups did not respond immediately to requests for comment.

With Keliber, Sibanye-Stillwater seeks a foothold in the European battery metals market. (Image courtesy of Keliber Oy.)

According to the company, the approvals for the project’s Rapasaari mine and Paivaneva concentrator include the right to start operations despite the existence of any appeals.

Keliber is an advanced lithium project, located in Kaustinen and Kokkola, and it aims to be the first European producer of battery-grade lithium hydroxide from its own mined ore reserves.

Sibanye took control of Finnish battery chemicals maker Keliber last October when it raised its shareholding to 85%, after acquiring an initial stake in February.

The refinery “is preparing for the construction phase to start within the following weeks,” said Sibanye CEO Neal Froneman in a statement.

In November, the Sibanye board approved €588 million ($634.2 million) in spending that will start with the construction of a lithium hydroxide refinery in Finland’s Kokkola industrial park, from where the company plans to feed into the European battery sector.

Apart from Keliber, Sibanye is partnering with Ioneer Ltd to jointly develop the Rhyolite Ridge lithium project in the United States.
