Eramet raises lithium goal for second phase of Argentina project

Reuters | February 22, 2023

Eramet has increased its target for lithium production for its large deposit in Argentina under a potential second phase as it responds to strong demand for electric vehicle batteries, the French group said on Wednesday.

The mining company plans to start producing lithium in early 2024 at the Centenario deposit it is developing with Chinese steel group Tsingshan, with a first-stage objective of 24,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent annually.

After indicating in October it was considering doubling its capacity target in a second phase, Eramet said it was now looking at tripling the objective compared with the first phase.

“We have already launched a study that should allow us quickly to triple annual production capacity,” Eramet’s chair and chief executive officer Christel Bories said during a call with reporters after the company reported annual results.

The second stage, on which Eramet expects to take an investment decision this year, would add around 50,000 tonnes of further capacity during 2025 and 2026 to bring the project’s total capacity to about 75,000 tonnes by 2027, she said.

As part of its pivot towards battery materials, Eramet is studying with Germany’s BASF scope to produce battery-grade nickel and cobalt from ore extracted at Eramet’s Weda Bay mine in Indonesia.

Bories said the company would take an investment decision by the end of the year, a slightly longer timeframe than the first half of 2023 previously indicated, as the partners aimed to advance further with technical and permit work.

She declined to confirm a 2.4 billion euros ($2.55 billion) investment figure cited by the Indonesian authorities but said that number was in keeping with other comparable projects.

Eramet on Wednesday reported a sharp rise in 2022 profits but forecast lower core earnings for this year due to lower expected market prices and persistently high energy and raw material costs.

Lithium Americas starts construction at Thacker Pass lithium project
The commencement of construction follows the receipt of notice to proceed with the lithium project from the US Bureau of Land Management

By NS Energy Staff Writer 03 Mar 2023

Canadian mining company Lithium Americas has announced the start of construction at its fully-owned Thacker Pass lithium project in Humboldt County, Nevada, US.

The commencement of construction follows the receipt of notice to proceed with the lithium project from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

It also comes after the positive ruling secured by Lithium Americas last month from the US District Court, District of Nevada regarding the issuance of the record of decision (ROD) for the project.

The court declined an appeal to vacate the ROD for the mining plan of operations.

Lithium Americas stated that the construction activities including geotechnical drilling, site preparation, development of the water pipeline, and associated infrastructure have been started at the project.

Major earthworks contracts have been awarded and the activities are anticipated to begin in the second half of this year, said the mining company.

Bechtel was given the engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) contract for the project’s phase 1 and detailed engineering is going on.

The project is expected to have a production capacity of 80,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of battery-quality lithium carbonate in two phases of 40,000tpa, respectively.

Phase 1 production at the Thacker Pass project is slated to begin in the second half of 2026.

The Thacker Pass lithium project is anticipated to generate 1,000 jobs during construction and 500 jobs during operations.

Lithium Americas president and CEO Jonathan Evans said: “Starting construction is a momentous milestone for Thacker Pass and one we have been working towards for over a decade.

“We are excited about the prospect of generating economic growth in Northern Nevada and playing a major role in the domestic lithium supply chain for electric vehicles.”

Jindalee unveils updated mineral resource estimate at Mcdermitt Lithium Project
The combined indicated and inferred mineral resource inventory of three billion tonnes at 1,340ppm Li for 21.5 million tonnes of Lithium Carbonate Equivalent (LCE) at 1,000 ppm cut-off grade

By NS Energy Staff Writer 28 Feb 2023

Australian mineral exploration company Jindalee Resources has announced an updated Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) at its McDermitt Lithium Project located in Oregon, US.

The MRE increased by 65% to 21.5 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE), from the initial 13.3 million tonnes in the last year.

It was updated based on a drilling programme conducted at the McDermitt Lithium deposit, between August and October last year.

The drilling programme included a total of 10 diamond and 11 Reverse Circulation (RC) holes, focused on increasing confidence in the mineral resource.

Also, it allows for the conversion of Inferred Mineral Resource to Indicated, along with extending the deposit to the west, said the company.

Jindalee Resources said: “Mineral Resources were classified based on consideration of data quality and spacing as well as geological and grade continuity.

“Indicated Mineral Resources are confined to an area of closer spaced drilling with holes nominally drilled 400m apart, while Inferred Mineral Resources were restricted to blocks within 1,000m of the nearest hole.

“All blocks within the Mineral Resource are informed by at least two holes and 12 samples as a minimum, reflecting increased confidence in grade continuity due to the additional drilling in 2022.”

The mineral exploration firm said that the combined Indicated and inferred mineral resource update for 2023 represents an overall increase in tonnage of 65%, from 2022

Also, the Indicated Mineral Resource increased by 138% with an overall 131% increase in contained metal at this higher confidence classification.

The company has commissioned H&S Consultants (HSC) to update the MRE, after completing the 2022 drill programme.

It was updated based on all available information as of 31 December 2022.

The company estimated the Lithium using Ordinary Kriging (OK) for all domains, and the model was validated in several ways.

It was validated through visual comparison of block and drill hole grades, statistical analysis, examination of grade tonnage data and comparison with previous models.

Advance Lithium in joint venture talks with Mexico’s national lithium company

Staff Writer | March 1, 2023

Advance Lithium (TSXV: AALI) has entered into discussions with Mexico’s national lithium company, LitioMx, to form a joint venture. The goals of Advance Lithium and LitioMx are aligned, in that both want Mexico to become a lithium mining country as quickly as possible.

Advance Lithium has a group of lithium and potassium salars/salt lakes in central Mexico. The lithium and potassium mineralization are in clay deposits that start right at the surface and are not bound up in other minerals, it says.

The company has the rights to use a patent pending lithium and potassium extraction method for its salars. The first step is to add water to the clay and then agitate it to release the lithium and potassium from the clay. Then using electrical separation, a concentrate would be produced of lithium, potassium and water. Followed by adding an organic compound to the concentrate to separate the lithium and potassium from the water.

According to Advance Lithium, the key benefit of this extraction method is that low energy would be needed, which could be provided using solar power. The lithium extraction methods for other lithium clay deposits need expensive roasters that have high energy costs as the lithium is bound up in other minerals, it says.

The water from the method could be recycled and used many times, which is a key difference between other lithium extraction methods from clay deposits that require significant amounts of water that cannot be recycled. There is also no need for acid digestion to liberate the lithium and potassium from other minerals. “It truly is a green mining solution to produce lithium crucial for green energy,” Advance Lithium claims.

A demonstration plant is currently being built in Zacatecas, Mexico, by a team of metallurgists with extensive experience working for Mexican major mining companies building and operating production facilities. The goal is to show potential partners, shareholders and other interested parties Advance Lithium’s unique method to extract lithium and potassium from its salars.

“I’m excited about entering discussions with LitioMx to form a joint venture. Two large vehicle manufacturing companies have recently announced plans to build battery manufacturing facilities in Mexico, one of which will be located in the state of San Luis Potosi in close proximity to our salars,” Allan Barry Laboucan, CEO of Advance Lithium, said in a media release.

“It has always been a goal of Advance Lithium that if we become a lithium and potassium producer and that the lithium and potassium stays in Mexico to help with domestic battery manufacturing,” he added.

On Tuesday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced that Tesla has committed to building a new plant in the industrial hub of Monterrey. The Tesla factory will be one of Mexico’s first that is entirely dedicated to the expensive and complex process of making electric cars.

In addition to the lithium salars, Advance Lithium has a 100% interest in the Tabasquena silver mine and the Venaditas polymetalic project, both located in Zacatecas, Mexico.

Shares of Advance Lithium surged 50% by 1 p.m. ET Wednesday on news of its Mexico JV discussions, with trading volume of nearly 5.5 million shares, about 18 times its daily average. The company’s market capitalization is C$3.3 million ($2.4m).

American Battery Technology Company (OTC: ABML) (ABTC) announced Tuesday the results of a third-party audited inferred resource report on the lithium deposit at its Tonopah Flats project in Nevada, which it said has resulted in the identification of one of the largest known lithium deposits in the United States.

The Tonopah Flats lithium project in Big Smoky Valley encompasses 517 unpatented lode claims covering approximately 10,340 acres, and ABTC controls 100% of the mining lode claims comprising the Tonopah Flats property and the rights to all locatable subsurface minerals without any royalties.

ABTC began surface sampling of these claims in the summer of 2021, and subsequently performed multiple subsurface drilling programs totalling 12,000 feet of exploration covering approximately 65% of its property.

Through the this analysis, an open-pit resource estimate was developed that would support a processing rate of at least 200,000 tons of claystone per day, the company said.

The ABTC Tonopah Flats inferred resource has an estimated 15.8 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent, according to the analysis.

The company said that combined with its internally developed lithium extraction and hydroxide manufacturing techniques makes it a potentially critical source of domestically produced lithium to meet increasing demand for lithium products.

There is also potential to significantly expand the resources with further drilling extending to the north and south property boundaries and at greater depths, it said.

“Having identified one of the largest premier lithium deposits in the US is extremely exciting,” ABTC CEO Ryan Melsert said in the statement. “However, the identification of an inferred resource in and of itself is not enough to address our critical challenges of increasing our domestic production of critical battery metals, reducing the costs of manufacturing of these battery metals, and decreasing the environmental impacts of their production.”

The development of a resource needs to be paired with the development of targeted technologies for the extraction of these metals, he said.

“We have spent the past several years developing technologies specifically targeted at these Nevada-based claystone lithium resources and to have been recognized by the US Department of Energy for the performance of these technologies through our selection for a competitive R&D scale grant in 2021 and for a competitive grant to construct a commercial scale claystone lithium hydroxide refinery in 2022.”

American Battery Technology Company’s stock surged 37% on the OTC on the news. Trading volume reached 13,486,442, nearly 13 times the daily average of 1,380,062. The company has a $566.8 million market capitalization.

China’s lithium mining likely to face more scrutiny
China’s lithium mining will likely face disruption as the government steps up scrutiny of a range of problems that have emerged from extracting the metal, experts said on Wednesday.

Reuters | March 1, 2023

Yichun, a city in the southern province of Jiangxi, suspended all lithium mining late last week to crack down on criminal activity, such as unlicensed and environmentally damaging mining..

Though at least some mining has resumed, experts said the government was increasing oversight of a sector that has boomed in recent years as lithium prices soared alongside burgeoning demand for battery-powered electric cars.

“Environmental issues and illegal mining are the prominent problems in Jiangxi, where around one third of domestic lithium resource supply comes from,” said Wu Wei, assistant professor at the China New Energy Policy Research Institute of Xiamen University.

“We’re likely to see regular inspections to regulate the industry as an effort for China to enhance its self-supply sufficiency of the metal critical in the new energy transition,” Wu said.

Jiangxi has large reserves of lepidolite, a lithium-containing mineral. But the relatively low grade of lithium in it requires heavy extraction, said Wu.

“The mining and processing also pollute water as a result of its byproducts like tantalum and thallium,” he said.

Yichun’s big miners with valid permits have resumed operations, even as the inspection continues.

“Our production is now normal,” an official at Yichun Tantalum Niobium Mine Company Limited, a major lithium miner and processor, told Reuters on Wednesday.

About a third of the area’s output is still suspended, however, due to a lack of permits, said a Shanghai-based lithium analyst who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Yichun’s Bureau of Industry and Information Technology could not be reached for comment.

The investigation comes after a sharp decline in lithium prices, triggered by slowing demand for electric vehicles in China.

Mining in Yichun has boomed in the last two years, growing from a couple of dozen ore selection plants to more than 200, said the analyst, adding that more inspections are likely.

Canada’s Frontier Lithium (TSX-V: FL) has once again updated the mineral resource estimate for the Spark deposit, which is part of the company’s PAK lithium project located in Ontario, Canada.

The miner said the resource estimate update for the Spark deposit shows 18.8 million tonnes averaging 1.52% of lithium oxide (Li2O) in the indicated category. This represents a 30% size increase from the 14.4 million tonnes reported in December.

In the inferred category, Frontier said the deposit holds 29.7 million tonnes averaging 1.34% Li2O. That’s a 64% increase in size in only two months.

Winner of the “2019 discovery of the year” award, the Spark is one of the two premium spodumene-bearing deposits on the PAK property. The smaller deposit also named PAK, is located 2.3 km to the southwest of Spark.

“Overall, this equates to a 27% increase in the size of the combined lithium pegmatites at the PAK Lithium project,” vice president of exploration, Garth Drever, said in the statement.

“The grade increase together with the previously released results further support the ensuing PFS,” he noted.

The PAK property is said to contain one of North America’s highest-grade lithium resources.

SQM to spend $3.4 billion by 2025 as profit tripled

Cecilia Jamasmie | March 2, 2023

Image

Chile’s SQM (NYSE: SQM), the world’s second-largest lithium producer, said on Thursday it had earmarked $3.4 billion of new capital expenditure by 2025 to boost its production capacity to 210,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent a year, from current levels of 180,000tpa.

The hefty planned investment comes as the Santiago-based company reported soaring profits last year on the back of higher prices for the metal driven by soaring demand from the electric vehicles (EVs) sector.

SQM posted net income of $3.9 billion in 2022, an almost three-fold increase from the $585.5 million it amassed in 2021.

Total revenues for the year hit $10.7 billion compared to the almost $2.9 billion reported for the twelve months ended December 31, 2021.

Lithium prices have skyrocketed — up by as much as 1,200% — over the past several years as supply has failed to match rampant demand. Car makers continue to scramble for the battery metals to make more EVs and comply with tougher climate rules from governments.

SQM noted it would invest $1.4 billion from the total planned for the 2023-2025, period this year, as it continues expanding its capacity in Chile. The copper-rich country currently generates about 29% of the world’s supply, but it plans to double production by 2025 to about 250,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent.

Beyond Chile

SQM remains bullish on the long-term outlook for the lithium market. It now forecasts demand to reach almost 1.5 million tonnes by 2025.

“This strong demand growth expectations give us confidence as we remain focused on expanding our lithium production capacity,” chief executive officer Ricardo Ramos said in the statement.

The firm announced in January an A$4.2 million ($2.8m) investment in Australia’s Azure Minerals (ASX: AZS), which made it the lithium juniors largest shareholder. The company also said it planned to invest a further A$15.8 million ($10.6m) in Azure.

SQM has also partnered with Wesfarmers to develop the Mt Holland lithium asset in Western Australia. The project is expected to come online by the end of this year, with an initial production capacity of 50,000 tonnes of battery grade lithium hydroxide.

The lithium giant, which bought a refinery plant in southwest China last year, said the facility was expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2023. SQM’s plan is to produce lithium hydroxide from lithium sulfate sourced in Chile

European Lithium estimates capex of $866m for Wolfsberg lithium project (Austria)

By NS Energy Staff Writer 09 Mar 2023

A mining and processing operation to produce spodumene, a lithium concentrate, and a hydrometallurgical plant to convert the spodumene into battery-grade lithium are the two integrated operations involved in the Wolfsberg lithium project

European Lithium said that the Wolfsberg lithium project in Austria will require an overall capital expenditure (capex) of $866m, based on the findings of the definitive feasibility study (DFS).

According to the DFS, the mine is expected to produce 8,800 tonnes of battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate per annum.

The DFS for the project has been prepared by DRA Projects.

A mining and processing operation to produce spodumene, a lithium concentrate, and a hydrometallurgical plant to convert the spodumene into battery-grade lithium are the two integrated operations involved in the Wolfsberg lithium project, said the company.

The hydrometallurgical plant is designed to process 69,989 tonnes of spodumene concentrate per annum and produce 8,834t of LiOH.H2O product per year at an estimated lithium recovery of 89.73%.

The project’s ore reserve is 11,483kt grading 0.64% Li2O, with a content of 72.9 kt Li2O of proved and probable ore reserve categories.

European Lithium stated that the life of mine plan for the Wolfsberg lithium project is 14.6 years at a production rate of about 780 kt/a run-of-mine (ROM).

In addition, the DFS estimates a post-tax net present value (NPV) of $1.5bn and an internal rate of return of 33.3% with a payback period is 6.75 years.

The downstream project facilities are anticipated to be constructed in Q4 2023.

European Lithium chairman Tony Sage said: “The robust DFS provided by DRA provides confidence in the commercialisation of the Wolfsberg Project. This positive news has come during a buoyant market for lithium and an increased urgency for decisive action to accelerate the green energy transition, especially in Europe.

“Our next steps include finalisation of the listing of Critical Metals on NASDAQ and continuing our discussions with our financiers. Through the business combination with Sizzle, Critical Metals Corp. expect to access substantial opportunities available in the US market.”

Assays from Global Lithium Resources’ (ASX: GL1) Manna lithium project in Western Australia show a large-scale pegmatite system that could extend the proposed mine’s decade-long life, analysts say.

A new 800-metre-long zone containing lengthy, high-grade lithium intercepts is being assessed as an extension of the Manna deposit, the Perth, Australia-based Global Lithium said in a news release on Friday.

Highlights of the assays include hole MRC0192, which cut 19 metres grading at 1.2% lithium oxide (Li2O) from 263 metres downhole; hole MRC0232, which returned 17 metres grading 1.8% Li2O from 341 metres depth; hole MRC0182, which cut 15 metres at 1.7% Li2O from 277 metres depth; and hole MRC0234, which returned 15 metres at 1.7% Li2O from 355 metres downhole.

Manna could be developed as a 10-year mine with annual throughput of 2 million tonnes to produce a total of 2.2 million tonnes 5.5% spodumene concentrate, according to a scoping study issued last month. The operating cost would be US$688 per tonne, it said.

“If additional ore can be delineated, the company could target higher grade zones, lower strip ratios or extend the mine life as it optimizes the project,” Canaccord Genuity analyst Timothy Hoff wrote in a note on Friday. “We view the drill results as a strong indication of the potential at Manna to deliver additional high-grade ore to the mine plan.”

Manna has an indicated resource of 18.5 million tonnes grading at 1% Li2O and 45 tantalum oxide parts per million (ppm), according to a report from Feb. 2022. The inferred resource is 9.9 million tonnes grading at 1.1% Li2O and 49 tantalum oxide ppm. Global is planning an interim resource upgrade using the remaining assay results from the 2022 drilling program.

“These results have increased our confidence that this new area could potentially hold significant tonnes,” Stuart Peterson, general manager of exploration at Global Lithium, said in the release. “Our team continues to work hard to understand the extent of the possible strike length of the deposit outside of our current resource estimate.”

The company is planning a 35,000-metre drilling program this year to drill out and define new prospective areas within Manna. New regional targets will be drill tested to depth for possible additional spodumene pegmatites, the company said.
