Westwater breaks ground on $202m graphite processing plant in Alabama
The graphite processing plant in Kellyton is expected to start operation by the end of Q2 2023

By NS Energy Staff Writer 20 Apr 2022

Westwater Resources and its subsidiary Alabama Graphite Products have started construction of a $202m graphite processing plant in Alabama, US.

The plant is being built in the Lake Martin Regional Industrial Park in Kellyton.

It will be engaged in processing raw graphite into refined, battery-grade graphite to be used in batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), electronics, and other products.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey said: “Alabama, which is home to Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota and Mazda, is among the top four states in the nation in automobile production.

“This plant will make Alabama an even bigger player in the fast-growing electric vehicle sector.”

Upon its completion, phase I of the graphite processing plant is estimated to employ at least 100 people. When fully operational, the plant is anticipated to produce 7,500 metric tons of refined graphite per annum.

The graphite processing plant in Kellyton is targeted to start operation by the end of Q2 2023.

Based in Colorado, Westwater Resources is focused on developing battery-ready natural graphite materials for use in advanced batteries. The graphite processing plant in Alabama will be built by Alabama Graphite Products.

Apart from the processing plant, Westwater Resources will pursue advanced exploration activities of a graphite deposit in Coosa County in the Alabama Graphite Belt. In 2018, the company acquired mineral rights to nearly 41,900 acres and anticipates starting mining operations by the end of 2028.

Westwater Resources and Alabama Graphite Products president and CEO Chad Potter said: “The construction of this plant is the result of a lot of work, cooperation, planning and vision by numerous people over a number of years.

“I want to thank our incredible team, which envisioned and laid the foundation for what is the first graphite plant of its kind anywhere, as well as our state and local partners who made this day possible.”

Syrah Resources gets $107m loan for Louisiana EV battery plant

The U.S. Department of Energy is lending $107 million to graphite miner Syrah Resources Ltd to build an electric vehicle battery parts facility in Louisiana, the first loan in more than 10 years from the department’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) funding program.

President Joe Biden has set aggressive targets for half of all vehicles sold in the United States to be electric-powered by 2030, a goal that will require more domestic processing of EV building blocks. While the ATVM program has lent to automakers Ford Motor Co and Tesla Inc in the past, the Syrah loan is the first not directly to an automaker.

“The U.S. is serious about onshoring the battery manufacturing and critical materials supply chains,” Jigar Shah, head of the Energy Department’s Loan Programs Office, told Reuters. He estimated the United States only has about 5% of the manufacturing capacity needed to hit Biden’s 2030 target.

Lithium Americas Corp, ioneer Ltd, Lordstown Motors Corp and Piedmont Lithium Inc have said they also have applied for ATVM loans.

Australia-based Syrah plans to use the loan to help fund the expansion of a Louisiana facility that will process graphite mined from Mozambique into anodes, the positively charged electrode of a battery. The facility is expected to produce enough anodes to build 2.3 million EVs by 2040.

Syrah, which has a deal to supply anodes to Tesla starting in 2024, completed a stock offering in February to help further fund the $176 million project.

Importantly for Shah’s office, Syrah said its mine follows sustainable mining practices and most of the mine’s employees are Mozambican, with independent auditors verifying the claims. The Louisiana facility is expected to create about 150 construction jobs and 98 full-time jobs.

“The loan will allow Syrah to … support the rapidly growing EV and battery supply chain in the USA,” said Shaun Verner, Syrah’s managing director.

By Congressional mandate the ATVM program is not allowed to fund construction of new mines, but it can fund processing facilities. Shah’s office is review $2 billion in other loan applications.

Shah said Syrah’s loan was processed in about five months because the company was quick to respond to information requests, though he said other loan applications will take longer.

“The vast majority of applicants aren’t ready,” Shah said. “We need all of our questions answered to be able to process a loan.”

Nouveau Monde and Mason Graphite set to form JV to advance Lac Guéret in Quebec

Staff Writer | May 16, 2022

Nouveau Monde Graphite (TSXV: NOU; NYSE: NMG) and Mason Graphite (TSXV: LLG) have entered into an option and joint venture agreement to advance Mason Graphite’s Lac Guéret project in northeastern Quebec.

Image

As part of the deal, Nouveau will have the option to own 51% of the property if it invests C$5 million in Mason Graphite and spend C$10 million on advancing the property. It would also be required to co-fund a preliminary economic assessment and a bankable feasibility study based on a production scale of at least 250,000 tonnes per year of graphite concentrate.

In addition, Nouveau has inked a non-binding agreement with Mason’s subsidiary, Black Swan, to use the latter’s graphene processing technology in its Phase-1 natural graphite flake concentrator in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Québec and establish a fully integrated facility for graphite ore and graphene-finished products.

“The partnership announced today has the potential to propel Québec’s graphite industry on the world stage,” said Pierre Fitzgibbon, Québec’s Minister of Economy and Innovation, in a press release. “By combining the strengths of the two most advanced projects in North America…we are solidifying our battery value chain.”

Located about 285 km north of Baie-Comeau, the property covers 40 sqkm and has a resource estimate of 65.5 million tonnes grading 17.2% graphitic carbon for 11.2 million tonnes of graphite in the measured and indicated category. Inferred resources add 17.6 million tonnes grading 17.3% graphite for 3.4 million tonnes of the mineral.

The project, which according to Mason has received Québec’s permission to begin construction, also has proven and probable reserves of 4.7 million tonnes grading 27.8% for 1.3 million tonnes of graphite.

A feasibility study released in December 2018 outlined an average annual graphite production of 51,900 tonnes over a project life of 25 years. The study pegged the capital investment at C$258.2 million and the construction period at about 13 to 16 months.

At an 8% discount, the project is expected to generate an after-tax net present value of C$278 million and an internal rate of return of 21.7%, using a gold price of $1,465 per tonne.

According to Fahad Al-Tamimi, Mason Graphite chairman, the deal combines the “best attributes of the North American graphite industry.”

Eric Desaulniers, CEO of NMG, said the transaction showed that the company has a “realistic growth strategy” and the ambition of being a preferred supplier for “the generation to come.”

The deal is expected to be closed in the first week of July.

Nouveau Monde is targeting first production at its Matawinie graphite mine, in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Que., in 2023. Its vertically integrated business model involves mining at Matawinie and producing value-added forms of high-purity graphite at its purification facility in Bécancour to serve the lithium-ion battery and fuel cell markets.

BMO analyst Robin Fiedler, who follows Nouveau Monde, described the company’s joint-venture obligations in the deal as “manageable,” despite having its “hands full” with the company’s own operational and funding needs.

The deal could more than double the company’s graphite capacity in the long-term, Fiedler wrote in a research note to clients.

He added that the high levels of “sulphide impurities” in the project would require immediate processing to avoid oxidization, which meant that it needed a larger mine or a plant to “justify the economics.”

“We believe the resulting project redesign and upsized funding needs led Mason’s board to undergo the year-long evaluation of strategic options,” wrote Fiedler. “Lastly, we also understand that sulphide impurities may pose issues with achieving high-purity graphite concentrate needed to make anode material.”

American graphite producer wants to supply 30% of US, UK, European EVs by 2030

Staff Writer | May 29, 2022

US-based Urbix, a company that has developed a type of natural anode-grade graphite known as coated spherical purified graphite, announced the opening of an entity in the United Kingdom whose goal will be to supply UK and European-based automakers and battery industries with its products.

In a press release, Urbix said that its short-term vision is to supply 30% of EVs in the US, UK and Europe by 2030.

“The company will work with UK battery partners to test and validate its CSPG (coated spherical purified graphite),” the media brief states. “Early results and feedback from automakers indicated that Urbix’s drop-in graphite replacement is meeting and surpassing current customer specifications. This has substantial downstream benefits, contributing to EV batteries that are more efficient, possess a longer life cycle and achieve a greater energy density at a lower cost.”

The CSPG is being developed using a process known as spheroidization and it is being tested at the firm’s lithium-ion battery fabrication facility in Mesa, Arizona, where trials are conducted at temperatures from -30 to 80°C under fast charge and discharge conditions.

According to Urbix, CSPG maintains the energy density of natural flake graphite, while still providing the longer life cycle and consistency of synthetic graphite. The spherical graphite is also 20% to 30% cheaper than its artificial counterparts.

The product is also processed using just 10% of the energy, 6% of the acid, 7% of the time and double the yield compared to existing processes.

“Urbix’s method benefits from a highly resilient supply chain as it is compatible with raw graphite from multiple global locations meaning it is not dependent on a single source of graphite and does not need to source from China,” the media statement reads. “The company is currently commissioning its 1,000-tonne capacity pilot line and expects to be at 32,000 tonnes per year full-scale production by 2024.”

While these developments are taking place, the firm decided to open its first overseas office based on studies and predictions that show that the European continent’s demand for graphite is expected to reach 916,000 tonnes annually by 2030 to supply the EV, energy storage systems and portable devices industries.

“Companies driving the global energy transition need a reliable supply of high-performing and environmentally-friendly graphite to meet projected demand for electric vehicles,” Nico Cuevas, Urbix’s CEO and co-founder, said. “The momentum in the UK and Europe is building every day and establishing Urbix’s presence here is critical to increasing supply chain capacity outside of China. We’re looking forward to growing our presence and becoming a part of the UK’s well-established and growing battery ecosystem.”

Nouveau Monde Graphite (NMG) has unveiled the results of its feasibility study for its Phase-2 Matawinie mine and Bécancour battery material plant projects in Canada.

The feasibility study, conducted by engineering firm BBA, showed strong economic advantages for the company’s integrated ore-to anode-material model and operations.

The company’s Phase-2 Matawinie mine and Bécancour battery material plant are located 150km northeast of Montréal, Québec, Canada.

According to the study results, the Matawinie mine is expected to produce 103,328t/y of graphite concentrate.

The Becancour battery material plant is anticipated to produce 42,616t/y of anode material, 3,007t/y of purified jumbo flakes and 18,384t/y of by-product fines.

The study indicates a 21% after-tax internal rate of return, and a net present value of C$1.58bn ($1.22bn) for high-purity flakes and advanced graphite materials, based on projections of current pricing.

In addition, it estimates the capital expenditure for the integrated project to be at C$1.4bn, which includes C$481m for the mine and C$923m for the battery materials plant.

NMG chair Arne Frandsen said: “Market trends have accelerated in past months and while inflation and logistics turbulences present a more challenging environment, we have demonstrated our graphite expertise, advanced manufacturing capacity and complex project management skills to execute our vision of an integrated green anode material production.

“The successful upstream integration is designed to ensure that we have access to high-quality, responsible feedstock for decades to come, and provides battery and EV manufacturers with the assurance of a traceable, local, and carbon-neutral supply.”

NMG is developing a natural graphite operation, which is said to be supported by its location, vertical integration, cost structure, ESG credentials and experienced team.

The announcement comes as battery and EV manufacturers are looking for alternative graphite sources amid growing demand and potential production deficit in the next decade.

The company claimed that it is well-positioned to serve the North American and European markets with its large graphite deposit, advanced ecotechnologies, and production capacity.

Its Phase-1 operations, along with advantages including clean hydropower, logistical base and stable fiscal and political environment will support its proposition, said the company.

Furthermore, NMG said is designing a mine of the future, which aims to provide responsibly extracted, environmentally transformed, and locally sourced green anode material for battery and EV manufacturers.

Graphite One has released a prefeasibility study on developing a mine at its Graphite Creek property in Alaska and building a battery anode materials manufacturing plant in Washington state.

The study was based on a proposed mine life of 23 years and a 26-year operating life for the manufacturing plant, which would use purchased graphite for the first four years until the mine is up and running. By the fifth year, the company says, the mine would supply 100% of the plant’s natural graphite requirement.

The company estimates it will take three years to permit and build the graphite manufacturing facility and on average, the plant would produce about 49,615 tonnes of anode material per year (coated, spherical natural graphite [CPN]; blended natural and artificial graphite [BAN]; secondary particle natural graphite [SPN]; and secondary particle composite [SPC]); along with 7,354 tonnes of purified graphite product and 18,057 tonnes of unpurified graphite product annually.

The proposed open pit mine, on the Seward Peninsula, about 60 km north of Nome, would produce an average of 51,813 tonnes of graphite concentrate per year. The pit would be mined in six phases and the ore would be hauled to an adjacent process facility, which would process an average of 2,860 tonnes per day.

Over its 23-year mine life, the mine would produce 22.5 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 5.6% Cg (total carbon in graphite form) and peak mine production is expected to be about 11,000 tonnes per day.

The study estimated initial capex of $571 million to build the manufacturing plant and $499 million to construct the mine for a total of $1.07 billion. Factoring in a contingency of $90 million for the plant and $80 million for the mine would bring the initial capex to $1.24 billion.

The capex could be repaid in 5.1 years and the integrated project would generate an estimated post-tax net present value at an 8% discount rate of $1.4 billion and an internal rate of return of 22%.

The company also noted that the numbers in its prefeasibility study do not account for tax credits under the US Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 that come into effect on Dec. 31, and said it will evaluate the act’s impact on Graphite Creek’s economics when they are clearer.

A resource update was included as part of the study. Measured and indicated resources now total 32.5 million tonnes grading 5.25% Cg for 1.7 million tonnes, with inferred resources at 254.7 million tonnes grading 5.11% Cg for 13 million tonnes. The estimate used a cutoff grade of 2% Cg, down from 5% in a previous 2019 estimate, due to updated mining and processing information as well as the integration of the processing facility in Washington state. Overall, tonnage increased in each category by 175-200%, however, grades decreased by about one-third.

The company also announced it has increased its previously announced non-brokered private placement of C$15.5 million to C$21.3 million. It now intends to issue up to 18.5 million units at a price of C$1.15 per unit.

Over the last year, Graphite One has traded in a range of C89¢ and C$2.54 per share and at press time in Toronto was trading at C$1.27 per share. The company has 87.8 million common shares outstanding for a market cap of C$113.3 million ($87m).

The company is banking on rising demand for graphite and notes that about 4.5 million tonnes of graphite will be needed annually by 2050 to keep up with demand in the energy sector, based on statistics from the World Bank.

In April, it signed a memorandum of understanding with Sunrise (Guizhou) New Energy Material Co. Ltd., a Chinese lithium-ion battery anode producer. The MOU is designed to develop an agreement to share expertise and technology for the design, construction and operation of its graphite material facility.

It also signed a non-binding initial MOU the same month with Lab 4 Inc., of Nova Scotia, to work together to design, develop and build a recycling facility for end-of-life electric vehicle and lithium-ion batteries.
