Ambler JV approves $27 million for Alaska project

Bruno Venditti | November 19, 2020

Ambler Metals, the joint venture operating company equally owned by Trilogy Metals (TSX/NYSE: TMQ) and South32 Limited (LSE: S32) approved the 2021 program and budget of approximately $27 million for the advancement of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) in Northwestern Alaska.

According to the company, activities will focus on an additional 7,600 meters of drilling, which will have the dual purpose of extracting additional material for metallurgical work and for the conversion of mineral resources into the measured category.

“The proposed budget is expected to have a twofold positive impact for the company in that we will continue to de-risk the Arctic project and we will also move forward in unlocking the mineral potential within the 100-km-long VMS mineral belt, as well as around the Bornite copper/cobalt deposit,” said Trilogy CEO Tony Giardini in a media release.

The UKMP project has a combined resource of 8 billion pounds of copper, 3 billion pounds of zinc and 1 million ounces of gold equivalent.

The company expects to submit permit applications under the Clean Water Act to the United States Army Corps of Engineers during the second half of 2021.

Exploration
Ambler Metals plans to conduct a 7,000-meter regional exploration drill campaign at the Sunshine prospect and at other drill-ready targets.

The drill program is expected to commence in mid-July and finish before the end of September. The drilling will be preceded by detailed geologic mapping, geochemical soil sampling, and ground geophysics.

The companies announced that the JV will be led by Ambler president and CEO Ramzi Fawaz, VP operations Kevin Torpy and VP finance Rebecca Donald.

The Ambler Metals joint venture was formed in February. Trilogy contributed all its assets associated with the 172,675-hectare UKMP, including the Arctic and Bornite projects, while South32 contributed $145 million.

Osisko Metals’ Pine Point on track to be a major source of clean, high-grade zinc concentrate

MINING.COM and Osisko Metals | May 7, 2021

Osisko Metals’ Pine Point project in the Northwest Territories has “all the ingredients you want for an outstanding base metals project,” says the company’s Chairman and CEO Robert Wares.

....................
This year, the company plans to conduct an infill drill program to upgrade mineral resources to the indicated category. Current near-surface resources stand at 12.9 million indicated tonnes grading 4.56% zinc and 1.73% lead (6.29% zinc equivalent) and 27.6 million inferred tonnes of 4.89% zinc and 1.91% lead (6.8% zinc equivalent).

The company is currently undertaking hydrogeological studies to further de-risk the project, which could lead to substantial reductions in water management costs over the life of mine, says Wares.

“We expect to release an updated PEA in early 2022 that will likely include lower capital and operating costs”, he says, “and will go hand-in-hand with a new resource estimate that incorporates results from our 2020 and 2021 exploration and definition drilling programs.”

Boliden to invest €700m in Odda zinc smelter in Norway

By NS Energy Staff Writer 22 Jul 2021

The expansion will help Boliden Odda increase its annual production capacity to 350,000 tonnes from current 200,000 tonnes

Image

Swedish mining and smelting firm Boliden is set to invest a total of €700m in the expansion of its Boliden Odda smelter in Norway to nearly double its zinc production.

With the expansion, Boliden Odda is expected to increase its annual production capacity to 350,000 tonnes of zinc, from current 200,000 tonnes.

As part of the expansion, several new facilities are planned at Boliden Odda, including a new roaster, a new sulphuric acid plant, and a new cellhouse.

Also, the works include expansion and modernisation of the leaching and the purification plant, and expansion of the foundry and quay infrastructure.

According to the company, a significant part of the total investment is expected to be made during 2022 and 2023.

Boliden president and CEO Mikael Staffas said: “This is one of the largest investments in Boliden’s history. By increasing the production of zinc with the highest climate performance while also improving resource efficiency and productivity, we are setting a new standard for zinc smelting both in terms of sustainability performance and cost effectiveness.”

Boliden said that Odda will be supplied with fossil-free electricity, and the waste will be deposited in mountin caverns using unique, sustainable technology.

With all the environmental permits in place, the expansion is expected to enable the smelter to extract the bi-metals lead, gold and silver, in addition to zinc.

The expansion project, which expands the level of digitisation and automation in the operations, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

Based on the significant technological development, Boliden Odda has been granted investment support by financial service provider Enova and Innovasjon Norge.

In April this year, Boliden has sanctioned an investment of $149m for the expansion of its Kristineberg mine in northern Sweden.

Global zinc production set to recover in 2021

Global Mining Review, Friday, 17 September 2021

Zinc mines are recovering from the impacts of COVID-19, according to GlobalData, with production expected to recover by 5.2% in 2021 to reach 12.8 million t.

Image

The data and analytics company notes that production declined by approximately 5.9% to 12.1 million t in 2020, mainly due to COVID-19 related lockdowns and restrictions. However, looking ahead, the company suggests that zinc production over the forecast period (2021 – 2025) is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.1% to reach 13.9 million t in 2025.

Vinneth Bajaj, Mining Analyst at GlobalData, comments:

“Bolivia’s zinc was particularly affected by the pandemic in 2020, but production is now expected to recover. Mines in the region such as the Colquiri, Cerro Rico, and San Cristobal sites are now reopening. Similarly, the re-opening of Peru’s Chungar Mining Unit, and El Porvenir and Cerro Lindo mines is expected to increase production in the country by 9.4%, to reach 1.5 million t in 2021.

“However, production is not recovering in all regions, as declines are expected in Canada (-5.8%) and Brazil (-19.2%) – mainly due to scheduled zinc mine closures and planned maintenance shutdowns.

“The US, India, Australia, and Mexico will be the key contributors to zinc production growth in 2021 – 2025. Combined production in these countries is expected to increase from a forecasted 3.6 million t in 2021 to 4.2 million t in 2025.”

Ivanhoe Mines, Gécamines to redevelop Kipushi zinc mine in DRC
The Kipushi mine, which has been on care and maintenance since 1993, will now be redeveloped at an estimated pre-production capital cost of $382m, with an initial focus on the Big Zinc deposit

By NS Energy Staff Writer 15 Feb 2022

Ivanhoe Mines and Gécamines have agreed to create a new joint venture (JV) aimed at bringing back the Kipushi zinc mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) into commercial production.

The underground mine had been on care and maintenance since 1993 owing to a mix of economic and political factors.

It will be now redeveloped at an estimated pre-production capital cost of $382m. The redevelopment will involve construction for two years and will use the significant existing surface and underground infrastructure.

As per a new feasibility study, the mine life of Kipushi will be 14 years.

The initial mining at the Kipushi project will be focused on the Big Zinc zone. The project calls for the development of an 800 kilo tonnes per annum (ktpa) underground mine and concentrator.

According to Ivanhoe Mines, the Kipushi project will be the highest-grade major zinc mine in the world. The mine will have an average grade of 36.4% zinc during the first five years of production.

The new agreement outlines the commercial terms that will be the basis of the new JV agreement to set up a framework for the operation of the Kipushi zinc mine, said Ivanhoe Mines. The company said that the JV is subject to the signing of definitive documentation.

Ivanhoe Mines executive co-chair Robert Friedland said: “The new agreement now allows us to responsibly, efficiently and expeditiously develop Kipushi into an ultra-high-grade zinc producer, with outstanding potential to find more zinc, copper, germanium and silver resources – paving the way to fulfilling its promise of significant, long-lasting, economic and social benefits for the Congolese people.”

The Kipushi copper-zinc-germanium-silver mine is located nearly 30km southwest of Lubumbashi and less than 1km from the Zambian border.

For a period of 69 years from 1924 and 1993, the Kipushi mine yielded a total of 6.6 million tonnes of zinc and four million tonnes of copper from 60 million tonnes of ore grading 11% zinc and nearly 7% copper. Besides, the mine produced 278 tonnes of germanium and 12,673 tonnes of lead between the years 1956 and 1978.

In 2011, Ivanhoe Mines acquired a 68% stake in the Kipushi zinc mine. The remaining stake of 32% is owned by Gécamines, which is a state-owned mining company in DRC.

Following its drilling campaigns, Ivanhoe Mines has upgraded and expanded the Kipushi mine’s zinc-rich measured and indicated mineral resources to an estimated 11.78 million tonnes grading 35.34% zinc, 0.8% copper, 23 grams/tonne (g/t) silver and 64g/t germanium.

Gécamines CEO Bester-Hilaire Ntambwe Ngoy Kabongo said: “We are confident in Ivanhoe Mines’ technical and financial capabilities to operate the Big Zinc and trust that we can jointly develop the project in a sustainable, responsible and value adding manner for its stakeholders, such as neighbouring communities.

“Gécamines sees in it the opportunity for an improved exploitation of the Big Zinc, the development of an integrated economic fabric and the imbedding of skills in the Haut-Katanga province.”

In May 2021, Ivanhoe Mines had commenced production of copper concentrate from the Kamoa-Kakula mine in the DRC.

Zinc Is Facing A Massive Supply Squeeze

By Ag Metal Miner - Mar 31, 2022

Much has been said about the trials and tribulations of the aluminum market, particularly of the impact on smelter output from energy rationing in China last year and then rapidly escalating energy prices in Europe this winter.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine turbocharged prices. Fears rose over already constrained oil and natural gas supplies to Europe getting even worse. In the face of rapidly escalating energy costs, European smelters began partial and even complete closures of smelters pending a drop in power costs.

But, of course, the dynamic driving aluminum prices has been having exactly the same impact on all smelting or refining processes that are heavily reliant on electricity. For example, EAF blast furnaces for steel have also faced similar pressures.

Today, however, we’ll take a look at zinc smelters and zinc prices.

Rising zinc prices

Zinc is not normally considered a sister metal to aluminum. However, from a cost of production profile, it is remarkably similar.

So, it’s no surprise that Reuters reports the same dynamic playing out in Europe for zinc as for aluminum.

Firstly, exchange and trade inventory has been falling dramatically. It’s fallen to the point where the LME’s European warehouses are virtually empty when cancellations pending physical loadout are taken into account.

LME-registered stocks in the United States have fallen to a low of 25,925 tons. Available tonnage is lower still at 19,825 tons, the post reports. That compares to this time last year, when New Orleans alone held almost 100,000 tons of zinc.

Physical delivery premiums reflect shortfall

Secondly, and not surprisingly in view of the above, physical delivery premiums also underline the dire shortage of physical metal.

The premium for special-high-grade zinc at the Belgian port of Antwerp has risen to $450 per ton from $170 last October before the winter heating crisis kicked in. Meanwhile, the Italian premium has exploded from $215.00 to $462.50 per ton over the same time frame, according to Reuters.

In the U.S., Fastmarkets estimates Midwest physical premiums are up by 24% to 26-30 cents per pound ($573-$661 per metric ton).

This is largely an energy-related tightness. Russia is not a significant zinc supplier to Europe. However, the war is a direct cause of high power costs. So, to that extent, Europe and North America are going to be beholden on solutions to the conflict before power costs stand much chance of easing.

The situation in the Far East, by comparison, is almost a parallel universe. The LME’s Singapore warehouse holds nearly 82,000 tons. SHFE warehouses hold over 177,000 tons. As such, those figures raise the prospect of an arbitrage-induced flow of metal from east to west in coming months.

Reuters relays ILZSG estimates that the zinc market posted a deficit last year of 194,000 tons, largely a result of energy issues. That is contrary to predictions earlier in 2021 that the market would see a surplus of 353,000 ton. That’s a half-million-ton loss of supply, initially in China and then in Europe.

But China’s energy problems are easing. With that, aluminum and zinc production has been rising strongly this quarter. What seems less likely is a resolution anytime soon to Europe’s woes.

Relief for zinc consumers appears to be increasingly distant (in the West, at least).
