Construction of South Africa’s first liquid helium plant commences

By patrick mulyungi. 31 Oct 2019

Construction of South Africa’s first commercial liquid helium plant located in Free State has commenced according to Renergen, the project’s developer, and renewable energy provider.

On a statement, the company mentioned that it has awarded the contract for the supply of equipment for the plant to a Chinese company known as Western Shell Cryogenic Equipment Co. (WSCE), while that of installation of pipeline has been won by EPCM Holdings, an Engineering, Contracting and operation company focused on the Energy and industrial Sector.

Funded by the U.S government’s Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) at a tune of approximately US $40m, the project’s first phase is expected to come online by 2021, with a daily production capacity of about 350kg of helium.

This capacity is however expected to shoot to between 1.2 tonne and 5 tonne a day upon the completion of the projects second phase between 2022 and 2023.

World’s richest concentration of helium
The Virginia Gas Project according to Renergen CEO Mr. Stefano Marani, has arguably the richest concentration of helium on the planet. Its wells contain helium concentrations of between 2% and 11% while other projects around the globe have a concentration of between 0.1% and 0.3%.

It is said that when fully operational, this project will make South Africa the only commercial helium producer in Africa and one of the few countries in the world, eight to be precise, exporting the natural resource alongside the United States and Qatar.

North American Helium Raises $39 Million and Signs Contract for Building Canada’s Largest Helium Purification Facility in Saskatchewan
New helium purification facility expected to generate significant long-term stable cashflow in 2021

May 28, 2020 08:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time CALGARY, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)

North American Helium Inc. (“NAH” or the “Company”) today announced the Company has closed a non-brokered common share equity financing of approximately $39 million. Proceeds from the financing will be used to purchase and construct the Company’s second helium purification plant at the Battle Creek field in Southwest Saskatchewan, to fund an active drilling program, and for general corporate purposes.

NAH had previously secured $24 million of funding as of February 2020, largely from insiders. This further round of financing, totaling approximately $39 million, was completed by Off Road Capital Partners based in New York. Off Road is led by Robert Kramer and Gideon King, two individuals with vast experience in a broad array of asset classes, including commodities. As part of the financing agreement, Mr. King has joined the Company’s Board of Directors.

“This successful financing allows us to advance the Company toward significant long-term sustainable helium production and cash flow,” stated Mr. Nicholas Snyder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “We are in the process of securing multi-year off-take agreements with companies looking for reliable long-term helium supply in North America. This is an exciting time in our history as this facility marks our second successful commercialization of a new helium field in Canada. The first is the previously announced single-well processing (SWP) unit at our Cypress field in Saskatchewan, which is expected to come online in July of this year. This new facility at Battle Creek represents a step change for NAH, as we transition towards self-sustaining growth for both our organization and the helium industry in Western Canada.”

Mr. Marlon McDougall, President and Chief Operating Officer added, “We’ve been planning this for a long time and the purification plant has now been ordered from Air Liquide Advanced Technologies USA LLC. The Government of Saskatchewan continues to be very supportive of our plans and we have obtained all regulatory approvals to proceed with construction. We anticipate plant equipment delivery and construction to take 12 months with commissioning and start-up scheduled for July 2021. This facility will have a throughput capacity of 160 mcf/d of purified helium (20 MMcf/d raw gas), making it the largest helium purification system in Canada. Cash flow from this project will allow us to continue organically converting our significant land base of over 3.7 million acres into a development inventory of growth projects, generating significant potential cash flow streams in the future.”

NAH has been the most active helium driller in Saskatchewan with 15 wells drilled to date. The Company expects to have a continuous capital investment program in the second half of 2020, executing on meaningful exploration and development work with significant seismic acquisition and the drilling of up to 10 wells.

ABOUT HELIUM

Helium is an inert gas produced by the decay of uranium and thorium that can be trapped in underground reservoirs proximal to the source. Its unique physical properties make it vital for several high technology applications where there is often no substitute. Helium's low boiling point and non-reactive nature make it vital for the pressurization and purging of liquid fuels in rockets for space exploration and satellite infrastructure. Helium is also required for semiconductor manufacturing, MRI machines and certain welding applications due to its high heat capacity. A well-known but minor use is as a lifting gas in balloons and airships.

ABOUT NORTH AMERICAN HELIUM INC.

Founded in 2013, North American Helium is a Calgary-based, private helium exploration and production company. NAH is the only company in the past 40 years to successfully explore for and discover new economic fields of high helium gas in North America. Over the past three years, NAH has made four new discoveries and acquired rights to explore for and produce helium on a land base of over 3.7 million contiguous acres, primarily in Saskatchewan, Canada and Utah, USA. The Company expects to start producing and marketing helium in July 2020 with the goal of providing reliable, long-term North American supply of this scarce resource to meet growing demand.

Tanzania could become top helium producer

TOM COLLINS9 MAY 2019

Exploration data suggests that Tanzania’s Rukwa Basin could hold large reserves of helium, a natural resource whose price has risen considerably in recent decades. Tom Collins considers the significance of the finds.

Roaming across the Tanzanian plains on safari some six years ago, it dawned on two Australian geologists that Tanzania could hold world-class helium reserves.

Looking at local research conducted by a British geologist in the 1950s, an unusually high concentration of helium in the country’s naturally occurring gas seeps was a strong indication that large primary deposits lay under the ground.

While the global supply of helium had comfortably outweighed the demand, this revelation gathered dust in the Tanzanian archives in the absence of any commercial justification for further exploration.

Now global supply is under threat, with the commodity surging around 500% in the past fifteen years, Helium One – the company eventually created by the Australian geologists – announced from early analysis data that Tanzania could hold as much as 98.9 billion cubic feet (bcf): enough to make the East African nation one of the world’s top producers

Huge potential
Aside from the large quantity, Tanzania’s south western Rukwa basin – where the helium seeps are located – is also relatively unique in the concentration of helium it produces.

Professor Jon Gluyas, Director of Durham University’s Energy Institute, who conducted research on Tanzania in conjunction with Oxford University and Helium One, argues that the helium concentration in Tanzania is “getting on for a world record.”

While most helium is produced with very low percentages as a by-product of natural gas, helium in the Rukwa basin is found attached to the carrier-gas nitrogen and takes up a much greater share of that compound.

The percentage of helium found in Qatar – a heavyweight of helium production along with the US – stands at around 0.4% relative to methane, whereas concentration in Tanzania falls at around 10% relative to nitrogen.

Added to the 98.9 bcf potential – which towers over the yearly global supply of only 6 bcf – Josh Bluett, Helium One’s Technical Director, firmly believes that “this will be the largest primary helium project in the world.”

Helium One, in fact, are moving relatively quickly towards production after the pre-exploration phase was aided by extensive seismic data collected as a result of drilling by US oil company Amoco who came through the Rukwa basin in the 1980s looking for oil or gas.

Bluett states that the company is now “drill ready” after raising $2m from Australian, Asian and African investors last year, and procuring three licenses from the government.

“The next stage is to conduct the drilling program and the expectation is to make one or more helium discoveries in these reservoirs,” he says. “All going to plan we will be in that phase next year and hopefully moving to production by 2021

......
......
With Helium One hoping to transport its helium to the port of Dar es Salaam and then ship it to the US, Asia and Europe by 2021 – the partnership tells a different story of Tanzania under President John Magufuli and looks set to benefit both parties.

“For Tanzania this is another good opportunity for the economy,” comments Mshiu. “Like other resources which we have here in Tanzania, we are supporting the private sector to exploit it but also to make sure we have sufficient oversight of it.”
https://africanbusinessmagazine.com/sec ... -producer/

......
https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%A9 ... _naturelle

https://fr.investing.com/equities/attis ... ny-profile

Avanti Energy Acquires Key Land Licenses in Alberta with Historic Showings of Over 2% Helium

Mar 29, 2021 VANCOUVER, BC

Avanti Energy Inc. (TSXV: AVN) (US OTC PINK: ARGYF) (the "Company") is pleased to announce that it has now acquired over 6,000 acres under licenses from the government of Alberta. The property is highly prospective for helium and contains wells that were originally drilled for oil and natural gas.

Highlights:

A previously abandoned natural gas well on the property, drilled by a Canadian major oil and gas company, showed 2.18 % helium and 96% nitrogen in the Cambrian, and 0.3% helium and up to 98% nitrogen in the Devonian.
Offsetting wells have multiple tests in Cambrian and Devonian intervals with up to 1.79% helium and 83-93% nitrogen content.
Drill stem tests (DSTs) in wells in and around the newly acquired land package indicate reservoir quality rock in the Cambrian and Ordovician zones.
The newly acquired project resides in an area with confirmed reservoir rock and multiple DSTs with analysed gas. A previously drilled well on the property tested gas with high helium content (2.18%) and high nitrogen content (96%). The high grade of helium gas showings of greater than 2% compare favourably to commercially viable grades ranging from 0.3% to 1%. The property fits well with helium tests in multiple nearby wells and the potential for viable helium reservoirs over a larger basement structure. The Company will continue to evaluate and map deeper Paleozoic zones in detail as mapping the basement structure will be crucial to high grading areas with structural or stratigraphic trapping of helium.

"Following a methodical and detailed review by our experienced technical team, we are excited to add this highly prospective property in Alberta to our current portfolio of helium projects," said Company consulting geologist Genga Nadaraju. "High nitrogen content is advantageous over wells with high hydrocarbons as the nitrogen can be safely vented to the atmosphere after the 1% to 2% helium content is removed. Ms. Nadaraju continued, "We are using a targeted approach to delineate and prioritize highly prospective areas for drilling. Additionally, we are continuing to employ our unique approach and selection methodology to evaluate and prioritize multiple helium assets across Western Canada and the United States."

Rob Gamley, President & CEO of Avanti, commented, "We are very pleased to have acquired these licenses in Alberta. Alberta is a great address and the environment is ripe for a resurgence of the helium industry in the province. Mr. Gamley continued, "With Canada recently adding helium to its critical mineral list in 2021, it is vital that we continue with our acquisition strategy and build a targeted project portfolio with known helium showings and strong potential for economic development and production."
