Nouveau Monde Graphite commits to all-electric fleet at Canadian mine site

MINING.COM Staff Writer | November 30, 2020

Nouveau Monde Graphite (TSXV: NOU) has committed to using all-electrical equipment and vehicles at its Matawinie graphite project in Quebec.

In a press release, the Canadian miner said that it is advancing the procurement process for its fleet and charging infrastructure through an international call for pre-qualification.

“Discussions with manufacturers have already enabled us to identify existing machinery in development and/or available, notably for the ancillary fleet where purchasing agreements are being finalized,” the media brief states.

“Through the call for pre-qualification, large OEMs and innovative SMEs alike are now invited to submit detailed proposals and performance specs for their production equipment solutions. Whether powered by lithium-ion batteries, plug-in systems or hydrogen fuel cells, Nouveau Monde is seeking the best zero-emission equipment for heavy-duty operations and harsh conditions associated with open-pit mining.”

The over 60 pieces of equipment the company is asking for are to be used at Matawinie, where the target for commercial production is 2023, with an allocated transition period to fully electrify the fleet by 2028.

Nouveau Monde is also working on the construction of a dedicated power line to supply the mine site with a reliable, affordable and clean supply of hydroelectricity and has been selected by the provincial and federal governments as a key partner to develop a new electric propulsion system with a rapid recharging infrastructure adapted to heavy vehicles in the open-pit mining industry.

BHP, Vale, Rio Tinto launch challenge to encourage haul truck electrification

MINING.COM Staff Writer | May 12, 2021

Three resource giants, BHP (ASX, LON, NYSE: BHP), Rio Tinto (ASX, LON, NYSE: RIO), and Vale (NYSE: VALE), launched on Wednesday the Charge On Innovation Challenge, a global competition for technology innovators to develop new concepts for large-scale haul truck electrification systems with the main goal of cutting emissions from surface mining operations.

In partnership with Australia’s mining equipment, technology and services industry body Austmine, this initiative is also expected to generate solutions that are capable of unlocking safety, productivity, and operational improvements.

SIGN UP FOR THE SUPPLIERS DIGEST
According to the challenge’s founding patrons, current stationary charging systems require substantial time to charge large trucks, which results in significant lost productivity. Thus, the mining industry needs multi-megawatt scale fast charging concepts capable of delivering around 400kWh to charge and propel a truck within the truck’s haul cycle, which includes load, travel, dump, return, and queue.

oui, pour le moment.

comme je viens de poster sur le fil de l' Australie : http://www.oleocene.org/phpBB3/viewtopi ... 1#p2319151
Fossil fuels contributed 79% of total electricity generation in 2019, including coal (56%), gas (21%) and oil (2%).

on verra bien, j'veux bien...

Hitachi partners with ABB to develop electric dump truck

DANIEL BRIGHTMORE JUN 28, 2021

Utilising ABB’s innovative battery technology, Hitachi Construction Machinery trucks can be transformed from diesel to full electric battery operation. The dump trucks will operate by utilising a new onboard electrification system – drawing its energy requirements from an energy supply system with dynamic charging, allowing simultaneous charging of the on-board energy storage system while providing energy to power the truck.

The system will provide extended battery longevity by reducing the load and discharge during each haul cycle, offering a cost-efficient industry solution that allows continuous operation to maintain high productivity.

Hitachi and ABB signed a memorandum of understanding in March 2021 to build a partnership aimed at realising net zero emissions. ABB will develop the on-board energy storage systems by customising an existing product and Hitachi Construction Machinery will lead the overall design and development of the dynamic charging battery dump truck utilising the technology of its existing rigid dump truck with trolley as its base, effectively allowing the accelerated development of this solution.

Hitachi and ABB are innovating to drive the electrification of mining operations
Hitachi Construction Machinery and ABB understand there is a growing interest in the electrification of mining operations and machinery, as environmental awareness grows within the industry and community.

Technology continues to be further developed in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while taking into consideration the demands of mining operations,” the companies said in a statement.

Image

Controls the initial and lifecycle costs - By drawing the electrical power from the dynamic charging system required during operation will limit the volume of batteries on the trucks, providing a sustainable solution. In addition, the system aims to reduce the lifecycle costs by drawing electrical power from the overhead system while connected, simultaneously charging the battery in an appropriate manner to reduce the load and depth of discharge, maximizing battery life.
Reduces the vehicle weight and maximizes the load capacity - Limiting the battery volume lessens the weight of the battery solution on the vehicle, maximizing the battery dump truck’s payload capacity.
Dynamic charging solution to provide a higher rate of operation over static charging - The solution draws electrical power from the dynamic charging system during operation while simultaneously charging the battery, removing the need to stop the vehicle for recharging. Therefore, achieving a higher rate of continuous operation to maintain productivity at site.

Newmont Mining forms net-zero partnership with Caterpillar

11 Nov 2021

Caterpillar will deliver 26 battery electric autonomous vehicles for deployment at Newmont’s mining operations.

US-based gold producer Newmont Mining has collaborated with mining equipment manufacturer Caterpillar to deliver a zero-emissions mining system to improve safety and productivity in the industry.

The collaboration will contribute to Newmont’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets.

Newmont previously pledged to reduce more than 30% of its GHG emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero carbon operations by 2050.

The partnership will enable the two firms to validate equipment, infrastructure, technologies and processes that would help transform surface and underground mining operations.

As part of the strategic alliance, Newmont will initially invest $100m to support the deployment of an all-electric autonomous haulage fleet in two continents.

The gold mining firm plans to deploy up to ten Caterpillar-developed battery-electric zero-emissions underground haul trucks at its Tanami mine in the Northern Territory in Australia by 2026.

Caterpillar will also deliver an automated haulage fleet of up to 16 for deployment at Newmont-operated Cripple Creek and Victor mine in Colorado, US, through 2023.

Newmont president and CEO Tom Palmer said: “A year ago, Newmont announced industry-leading emission reduction targets because we understand the human contribution to climate change.
