Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has started commercial operations of the 1.4GW Bang Pakong combined cycle power plant (Bang Pakong CCP) in Thailand’s Chachoengsao province.

Powered by GE’s equipment, the new power generation facility is made up of two gas-fired combined cycle blocks. These will replace the retired five blocks of the original Bang Pakong power plant, which was built in 1977.

The retried blocks were operated by burning natural gas and diesel. EGAT replaced them with the new units with an objective to boost efficiency and decrease the carbon footprint of the power project.

Les Etats-Unis veulent construire en Thaïlande de petits réacteurs nucléaires modulaires, avec l'espoir d'accélérer la transition énergétique du royaume qui dépend surtout d'énergies fossiles, a annoncé samedi la vice-présidente américaine Kamala Harris, en visite à Bangkok.

La Maison Blanche a précisé que cette annonce entrait dans le cadre de son projet d'accompagnement des pays souhaitant atteindre la neutralité carbone, face aux effets du changement climatique.

"Nous sommes impatients de travailler avec la Thaïlande pour tirer avantage des bénéfices des petits réacteurs modulaires et des sources d'énergie propre", a déclaré un responsable américain, en visite en Thaïlande aux côtés de Mme Harris.

Le royaume d'environ 70 millions d'habitants ne possède pas de parc nucléaire. Environ 85% de sa production d'électricité provient du gaz naturel et du charbon, selon les données du groupe de réflexion Ember.

Les petits réacteurs modulaires, fabriqués en usine et mobiles, auront "les standards les plus élevés de sûreté, de sécurité et de non-prolifération" et offriront "de l'énergie fiable 24 heures sur 24, 7 jours sur 7", avec une impact limité sur l'environnement, a assuré Washington dans un communiqué.

Ces modèles, moins puissants et plus petits que les réacteurs conventionnels, sont réputés comme plus sûrs, dans certains cas, car ils reposent sur des systèmes passifs qui font qu'aucune intervention humaine n'est requise pour arrêter les systèmes en cas de problème.

Sans préciser de calendrier, la Maison Blanche a promis de soutenir la Thaïlande, vulnérable au changement climatique, dans son objectif de zéro émission nette d'ici 2025.

Kamala Harris, qui se trouve à Bangkok pour le sommet de la Coopération économique pour l'Asie-Pacifique (Apec), doit rencontrer samedi le Premier ministre thaïlandais Prayut Chan-O-Cha.

Des panneaux solaires pour verdir la production de pneus

Aujourd’hui, c’est bel et bien le projet de centrale solaire en toiture le plus ambitieux du monde que vient d’annoncer Falken Tires pour son usine de Sumitomo Rubber Industries, à une cinquantaine de kilomètres au sud-est de Bangkok (Thaïlande). Une toiture de 100 000 m² et 40 000 panneaux solaires pour une puissance installée de 22 MW. Le tout devrait être mis en service en janvier 2025. Avec l’objectif de permettre à l’entreprise de respecter ses engagements de diviser par deux ses émissions de CO₂ de 2017 d’ici 2029 et d’atteindre la neutralité carbone en 2050.

Pour y arriver, l’usine va aussi adopter un système de cogénération au gaz — deux chaudières de 6,6 MW alimentées par des sources d’énergie renouvelables — et un autre d’alimentation électrique à la biomasse — les branches et les troncs issus de la récolte d’hévéas mise en œuvre dans le cadre du programme de caoutchouc naturel durable promis par Sumitomo Rubber Industries. De quoi réduire les émissions annuelles totales de CO₂ de l’usine de 38 000 tonnes.

Thailand's PTTEP Sets $6.7 B Investment for 2024 as Profit Edges Up

Thai national company PTT Exploration and Production Public Co. Ltd. (PTTEP) has allotted $6.7 billion to invest in 2024 in both fossil fuels and clean energy.

The company logged a net income of $2.2 billion for 2023, around 40 percent of which was from its expansion in Southeast Asia and the Middle East over the past year, the company said in a news release. Profit rose above the $1.99 billion reported for 2022.

PTTEP said it generated a total revenue of $9.05 billion in 2023, decreasing by approximately six percent from 2022. Average sales volume reached 462,007 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd), which is on par with the sales volume in 2022, while the average selling price dropped by 10 percent to $48.21 per boe following a decline in global crude prices.

The company said it intends to use the net profit for investment in 2024 under its planned budget. Key projects include a production ramp-up at the G1/61 Project, comprising the Erawan, Platong, Satun and Funan fields, to 800 million cubic feet per day in April 2024, and the plan to maintain gas production from the G2/61 Project (Bongkot field), the Arthit Project and the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area Project.

PTTEP will also accelerate petroleum exploration in Thailand and overseas to support future energy demand, it said. PTTEP said it aims to increase petroleum production by approximately nine percent to 505,000 boepd.

In addition, it has planned a provisional budget of $2.02 billion for 2024-28 to advance various forms of clean energy.

Commenting on the results, PTTEP Chief Executive Montri Rawanchaikul said that the company made significant progress in Thailand and overseas. PTTEP won bidding for two exploration blocks in the Gulf of Thailand, G1/65 and G3/65. These new blocks are adjacent to PTTEP’s existing projects and will enable the development to serve the country’s energy consumption, according to the CEO.

The company has also secured a partnership for Malaysia’s SK325 block, and discovered petroleum potential in three fields off the Sarawak coast including the Chenda-1, Bangsawan-1 and Babadon-1 exploration wells. The fields can be developed in a cluster model to speed up production, Rawanchaikul said.

Clean Energy Expansion

In 2023, PTTEP said it has expanded into clean energy to support sustainable growth amid the energy transition. The company was awarded a large-scale green hydrogen project in Oman’s Block Z1-02 and acquired a 25.5 percent stake in the Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm, the largest offshore wind power plant in Scotland.

Its first solar power project, Lan Sang Arun, commenced at its S1 Project in Phitsanulok province, Thailand to reduce reliance on gas-generated electricity and curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Through investments in the green hydrogen project in Oman, the offshore wind farm project in Scotland and a study of carbon capture and storage projects with global leading partners, PTTEP said it has an opportunity to gain knowledge in the development of new forms of energy and technologies aimed at addressing global warming issues.

Thaïlande: faible croissance à 1,9% en 2023

La croissance de la Thaïlande, deuxième économie d'Asie du Sud-Est, a ralenti en 2023, sous l'effet d'exportations en berne, a indiqué lundi l'agence nationale de statistiques.

Le produit intérieur brut (PIB) du royaume a progressé de 1,9% sur l'année, selon le Conseil national de développement économique et social (NESDC), qui tablait sur 2,5%.

Entre octobre et décembre, le PIB a baissé de 0,6% par rapport au trimestre précédent, en données ajustées des variations saisonnières.

Après une année 2022 à 2,5% de croissance, la Thaïlande affiche une dynamique parmi les plus faibles de la région, derrière le Vietnam, l'Indonésie ou les Philippines, qui ont atteint ou dépassé la barre des 5% en 2023.

Le pays, qui dépend grandement des exportations, a souffert de la baisse de la demande mondiale, dans un contexte marqué par le ralentissement de la Chine, l'un de ses principaux partenaires commerciaux.

L'agence gouvernementale anticipe une croissance comprise entre 2,2% et 3,2% en 2024, en ligne avec l'amélioration attendue de la conjoncture mondiale et le rebond du tourisme.

Le gouvernement table sur 35 millions de touristes en 2024, contre 28 millions en 2023.

"On peut s'approcher de 4% avec des mesures accélérées de dépenses publiques et le rétablissement des investissements privés (...) ou si les exportations et le tourisme sont meilleurs que prévu", a réagi Anusorn Tamajai, ancien membre du conseil d'administration de la banque centrale thaïlandaise, dans une déclaration écrite transmise à l'AFP.

Le nouveau Premier ministre Srettha Thavisin a promis cette année de redistribuer 10.000 bahts (250 euros) à des dizaines de millions de Thaïlandais, une mesure phare qui pourrait booster la croissance de 0.5 à 1 point en 2024 et 2025 selon la Banque mondiale.

Mais le financement de cette politique suscite des tensions et rend sa mise en application encore incertaine.

Mitsubishi Power, a power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has started commercial operations for the third M701JAC unit at a natural gas-fired power plant in Rayong Province, Thailand.

The power plant, a joint venture between Thailand’s largest independent power producer (IPP) Gulf Energy Development PCL, and Mitsui & Co., began operations on 31 March 2024.

Located around 130km southeast of Bangkok, the facility is operated by Gulf PD Company.

The natural gas-fired power plant comprises two GTCC power plants, each with four gas turbine units, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators, and generators.

It represents the seventh out of eight M701JAC units across two ultra-large-scale 2,650MW GTCC power plants in Rayong and Chonburi, with a collective output of 5,300MW.

The power plant is expected to be fully operational this year, with all eight units of the completed power plants will address the needs of key industrial and economic hubs in eastern Thailand.

Tender kicks off for hydro-floating solar hybrid in Thailand
Thailand’s Electricity Generating Authority has opened a tender for the design, supply, construction and commissioning of a floating solar array to be built at a dam with an existing hydroelectric power station.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has kicked off a tender for the design, procurement, manufacturing, supply, delivery, construction, installation and commissioning of a hydro-floating solar hybrid project.

The solar facility will be built at Srinagarind Dam, located in the Kanchanaburi province of western Thailand. The dam currently houses a hydroelectric power station with a power generation capacity of 720 MW.

The project, which is being funded by EGAT, must comprise a 182 MW solar power plant, a floating PV system, an anchoring and mooring system, a 33 kV electrical system and transmission lines and a control and monitoring system, as well as related software.

The natural gas-fired plant, which features two M701JAC gas turbines, was completed on schedule. The first turbine began commercial operation in March 2024, while the second unit was brought online this month.

La Thaïlande coupe l'électricité dans 5 localités birmanes, contre les centres d'escroqueries en ligne

Les autorités thaïlandaises ont coupé la fourniture d'électricité dans cinq localités de Birmanie mercredi, dans le cadre de la lutte contre les centres d'escroqueries en ligne qui prolifèrent dans la région frontalière.

Ces centres gérés par des réseaux criminels se sont multipliés dans les zones frontalières de Birmanie, en proie à une guerre civile, avec une main d'oeuvre étrangère souvent captive, contrainte de travailler pour escroquer des compatriotes.

"La Thaïlande a coupé la fourniture d'électricité à la Birmanie en cinq endroits, conformément à la décision du Conseil national de sécurité", a déclaré à des journalistes le ministre de l'intérieur, Anutin Charnvirakul.

Les coupures affectent Mae Sai, dans le nord de la Birmanie, Mae Sot, dans l'ouest, et le Col des Trois pagodes, également dans l'ouest du pays.

Selon le ministre, la vente d'électricité sur ces sites rapportait à la Thaïlande environ 50 millions de bahts (1,5 million de dollars) par mois.

"L'approvisionnement en électricité n'est pas interrompu parce que les entreprises ont violé leur contrat, mais parce que l'électricité est utilisée à mauvais escient pour des escroqueries, (le trafic de) drogue et des centres d'appel", a déclaré M. Anutin.

"Personne ne peut désormais accuser la Thaïlande de soutenir des entreprises illégales", a-t-il souligné.

Ces mesures interviennent au moment où la Première ministre Paetongtarn Shinawatra est à Pékin pour des entretiens avec le président Xi Jinping, lors desquels le dossier des centre d'escroqueries en ligne est susceptible d'être évoqué.

Pékin est préoccupé par ces centres, car de nombreux acteurs impliqués - victimes et criminels - sont chinois.

La crainte d'être kidnappé et forcé à travailler dans ces centres s'est répandue chez les touristes chinois et a été invoquée pour expliquer la baisse du tourisme chinois en Thaïlande pendant la période du Nouvel an lunaire la semaine dernière.

Or le marché chinois est extrêmement important pour la Thaïlande, qui cherche à redresser son secteur touristique après l'impact dévastateur de la pandémie de Covid-19.

Le vice-premier ministre thaïlandais Phumtham Wechayachai a décrit les centres d'escroquerie en ligne comme une "question de sécurité nationale".

EGAT has kicked off a tender for the development of a hydro-floating solar hybrid project in Thailand.

The project will be developed at Bhumibol Dam in western Thailand's Sam Ngao district. EGAT’s website states that the dam is the largest and highest arch dam in Southeast Asia, currently hosting a 779 MW hydropower plant.

The tender calls for a 205 MW crystalline silicon solar plant, along with a floating PV system, anchoring and mooring system, 33 kV electrical system, transmission lines, control and monitoring systems, and related software.

The tender details state that the selected developer will handle the design, procurement, fabrication, delivery, insurance, project management, construction, installation, testing, commissioning, and on-site training.

Interested applicants must purchase bidding documents from EGAT for a non-refundable fee of $1,000 or THB 30,000 ($885).

The project will be financed by EGAT funds, with the application deadline set for July 14, 2025.

In July 2024, EGAT launched a tender for a hydro-floating solar project, including 182 MW of solar capacity. A separate floating solar hybrid project with a 24 MW array began commercial operations in March 2024.

EGAT’s hybrid solar-hydro development aligns with Thailand’s Power Development Plan, which targets 16 floating solar projects across nine EGAT dams, aiming for a total capacity of over 2.7 GW.
