Norway Raises Projected Oil and Gas Investments for 2025 to $21B

Statistics Norway has increased the country’s forecast oil and gas investments next year by 5.2 percent to NOK 216 billion ($20.5 billion) compared to the previous quarterly survey.

The upward adjustment was driven by higher growth estimates for field development and exploration, the government agency reported on its website.

Nuclear power plant proposed for north-eastern Norway

Norsk Kjernekraft has submitted a proposal to Norway's Ministry of Energy for an assessment into the construction of a power plant based on multiple small modular reactors (SMRs) in the county of Finnmark. The company said it marks the first step in the formal process to establish a nuclear power plant there.


In April last year, the municipality of Vardø in Finnmark proposed nearby Svartnes as a possible site for a nuclear power plant to Norsk Kjernekraft, which aims to build, own and operate SMR power plants in Norway in collaboration with power-intensive industry. Vardø municipality and Norsk Kjernekraft entered into an agreement to prepare a report with proposals for a study programme in June 2023.

In collaboration with Vardø, Norsk Kjernekraft has mapped the energy situation in Finnmark, and considered the local conditions at Svartnes. Based on this, a nuclear power plant is proposed with a capacity of up to 600 MWe and an annual output of up to 5 TWh - "enough to triple the power supply in Finnmark".

Norsk Kjernekraft said the report it has now submitted to the Ministry of Energy "describes local conditions for the construction and operation of a nuclear power plant at Svartnes outside Vardø, and which topics will be described in a future impact assessment. The available information suggests that the location is suitable for the purpose."

Var Energi Makes Commercial Discovery in Cerisa Offshore Norway

Vår Energi ASA has reported a successful discovery at its operated Cerisa exploration well in production license PL 636 offshore Norway.

Var Energi confirmed estimated gross recoverable resources of between 18 million and 39 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe), the company said in a news release.

The company remarked that this is the fourth discovery in a row close to the partly electrified Vår Energi operated Gjøa platform. Together with previous discoveries in Gjøa North and Ofelia/Kyrre, Cerisa is a candidate to be tied into the Gjøa field by use of existing infrastructure in the area. Combined, the discoveries have estimated gross recoverable resources of up to 110 MMboe, according to the release.

La Norvège sort les muscles avec ce chantier titanesque (le plus important d’Europe) faisant intervenir plus grand navire-grue du monde pour son champ pétrolifère

Le navire-grue le plus imposant au monde vient de réaliser une prouesse technique en installant un “jacket” de 90 mètres de haut dans le champ pétrolier de Valhall sur le plateau continental norvégien (NCS). Ce projet ambitieux vise à prolonger la durée de vie de ce champ pour quarante années supplémentaires, promettant de nouvelles réserves et des avantages économiques considérables.


Le “jacket”, une structure métallique essentielle pour le soutien des plates-formes pétrolières, a été positionné avec précision par Heerema Marine Contractors, un entrepreneur maritime néerlandais. Cette opération s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet de développement Valhall PWP-Fenris, autorisé par le ministère norvégien du Pétrole et de l’Énergie. La structure servira de fondation à un module de topside de cinq étages, mesurant 55 mètres de hauteur et pesant environ 4 800 tonnes.

L’installation de ce jacket est une étape cruciale pour l’extension du champ pétrolier de Valhall, découvert en 1975 et dont les réserves potentielles sont estimées à 230 millions de barils équivalent pétrole. Ce développement est prévu pour capter de nouvelles réserves et assurer une production continue, renforçant ainsi les bénéfices économiques pour la région et les partenaires impliqués.

Minimisation des émissions et optimisation énergétique

Le projet tire parti des systèmes existants pour minimiser les émissions de CO2 à moins de 1 kg CO2/boe, en remplaçant les turbines à gaz traditionnelles par un système alimenté depuis la terre. Cette initiative contribue non seulement à l’efficacité énergétique mais aussi à la réduction significative de l’empreinte carbone du champ.

Progrès et perspectives du projet

Le projet a franchi plusieurs étapes clés depuis la découpe de la première plaque d’acier en septembre 2023. Le “jacket” supportera des structures offshores importantes, incluant la future plateforme de production Valhall PWP qui sera construite à Stord et prévue pour être déplacée en été 2026. Cette plateforme fera partie intégrante du renforcement de la capacité de traitement du gaz de Valhall, augmentant ainsi les exportations de gaz vers l’Europe via le pipeline Norpipe.

Implications industrielles et avancements technologiques

La participation de Aker Solutions et ProSep dans le développement et la modification des infrastructures sous-marines pour le projet Valhall PWP-Fenris met en lumière l’évolution des technologies et des processus dans le secteur. ProSep implémente notamment son procédé CTour pour le traitement de l’eau sur la nouvelle plateforme, garantissant ainsi le respect des dernières normes réglementaires norvégiennes.

Norwegian oil and gas player Aker BP has ticked off another box for its oil field life extension project by putting a new jacket in the North Sea with a semi-submersible crane vessel (SSCV) owned and operated by Heerema Marine Contractors. This milestone is part of a development project that aims to extend the life of a field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) for another 40 years.

After the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy greenlighted multiple developments, including the Valhall PWP-Fenris development, in June 2023, the project entered into the construction phase in September 2023 with the cutting of the first steel plate for Valhall PWP at Aker Solutions’ Stord yard.

Located in the southern part of the North Sea, the Valhall PWP-Fenris development includes a new centrally located production and wellhead platform linked to the Valhall field center by a bridge and an unstaffed installation at the Fenris field that will be tied back to Valhall through pipelines on the seabed.

The Fenris jacket and pre-drill module (PDM) started making their way to the Valhall field from Aker Solutions’ yard in Verdal on June 8 with three different tugboats maneuvering the giant barge out of the harbor. The journey was expected to take five days.

Once the jacket arrived at the Fenris offshore field in the Valhall area, it was installed on the seabed by Heerema Marine Contractors’ Sleipnir giant heavy lift vessel according to plan. With the jacket being fastened by 68-meter-long piles, the next task on the list was the installation of the PDM.

The 90-meter tall Fenris jacket was fastened with 68-meter piles and once the grout had hardened, the 800 mT PDM was lifted and welded. The first steel was cut for the utility module of the new platform at the Valhall field center in January 2024 at Worley Rosenberg’s facility in Stavanger, Norway.

While the Valhall oil field has been in production since 1982, the Valhall PWP-Fenris development project is anticipated to provide a lifeline by keeping the field in business for 40 more years. This is perceived to be one of the largest development projects on the NCS, with the total new reserves estimated at 230 million barrels of oil equivalent.

Once complete, the five-story topside module will be 55 meters tall, 32 meters wide, 54 meters long, and weigh approximately 4,800 tonnes. The Valhall PWP will be transported from Worley Rosenberg to Aker Solutions’ Stord yard for further hook-up to the production modules before sailing away in summer 2026.

According to Aker BP, the development has electrified its main power source, instead of using gas turbines, intending to leverage Valhall’s existing power-from-shore system with minimal emissions, estimated at less than 1 kg CO2/boe. The production is slated to start in 2027.

The 16,000-tonne Valhall PWP production platform for the Valhall field will be assembled at Stord, and the 9,500-tonne steel jacket will be delivered from Verdal, just like the Fenris unmanned platform. Aker Solutions’ scope covers considerable subsea and modification deliveries to the Valhall PWP-Fenris project.

The Value of Norway’s Oil Fund Soars to New High of $1.7 Trillion

For the first time in its nearly three-decade history, Norway’s oil fund, the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, has just exceeded the market value of 18 trillion Norwegian crowns, which equals $1.691 trillion as of Wednesday.

Government Pension Fund Global, as the Norwegian fund is officially known, was created in the 1990s and the government started transferring revenues from Norway’s oil and gas industry into the fund in 1996.
Since then, the fund has invested in equities and fixed income globally, raising its value with the returns.

In October 2019, the value of the fund exceeded 10 trillion Norwegian crowns and in May 2023, the fund’s market value topped the threshold of 15 trillion Norwegian crowns.

The weak Norwegian crown against the U.S. dollar has contributed somewhat to the new height of the fund’s value, but it is the equity investments in the U.S. stock market, in which the fund is heavily weighted, that have driven the record value, Nils Kristian Knudsen, an analyst at Handelsbanken, told Norwegian outlet FinansWatch.

For the first quarter of 2024, the fund returned 1.21 trillion crowns ($113 billion), which was the highest quarterly return in absolute terms since the fund was set up in 1996.

“Our equity investments had a very strong return in the first quarter, particularly driven by the tech sector,” Trond Grande, Deputy CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management, said in April, commenting on the fund’s performance in Q1.
The Norwegian fund owns on average 1.5% of all listed companies globally. The equity investments – which account for 72.1% of the fund’s total investments – consist of ownership shares in about 9,000 companies worldwide. A total of 26% of the fund’s assets are invested in fixed income, 1.8% in unlisted real estate, and 0.1% in renewable energy infrastructure.

The fund, which is commonly referred to as ‘Norway’s oil fund’ because it was created with oil and gas revenues, is a shareholder in many large companies in the world, including Big Oil, and has the power to influence other investors with its investment decisions.

As of the end of 2023, they held stakes in 220 energy firms in 35 countries, representing 2.6% of all investments. The fund held 3.4% in BP, 2.88% in Shell, 2.42% in TotalEnergies, 1.35% in ExxonMobil, and 1% in Chevron.

Les compagnies pétrolières et gazières norvégiennes doivent augmenter leurs investissements dans l’exploration et la production afin de ralentir un déclin attendu dans le pays dans les années à venir, a déclaré le régulateur norvégien de l’industrie pétrolière dans un rapport publié mercredi 21 août. Malgré sa position de plus grand fournisseur de gaz de l’Europe et son fleuron des hydrocarbures Equinor, la Norvège fait face à un déclin de plusieurs de ses gisements offshore et aucun nouveau développement n’est actuellement prévu pour les années 2030.

La production de pétrole et de gaz représente environ un quart du produit intérieur brut (PIB) annuel du pays, alors que la différence cumulée de revenus jusqu’en 2050 entre les estimations de production les plus élevées et les plus basses s’élève à quelque 1 400 milliards de dollars, selon le rapport de la Direction norvégienne de l’offshore (NOD). Il faut donc intensifier l’exploration et les investissements dans les champs, les découvertes et les infrastructures si l’on veut ralentir le déclin de la production , a déclaré Kjersti Dahle, responsable de la technologie et de l’analyse au sein de la direction, dans un communiqué.

Prendre plus de risques

Les compagnies pétrolières prévoient de forer plus de 40 puits d’exploration au large de la Norvège cette année, dont huit dans la mer de Barents. Mais ce n’est pas suffisant pour réduire l’ampleur du déclin (de la production) , a déclaré Kjersti Dahle. L’organisme souhaitait que les compagnies pétrolières prennent plus de risques pour forer dans les zones frontalières où les chances de faire des découvertes plus importantes sont plus élevées, a-t-elle aussi ajouté.

Si l’exploration dans la mer de Barents échoue et si peu de nouvelles découvertes sont faites ailleurs, la production de pétrole et de gaz tombera à près de zéro d’ici 2050, prévoit un scénario de la NOD.

OMV Announces Major Gas Discovery In Norwegian Sea

Austria's integrated energy company OMV has announced a major natural gas discovery in the Norwegian Sea. In a statement released on Friday, OMVB said it had found preliminary estimated total recoverable natural gas volumes of up to 140 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe) after completing a drilling operation in the Norwegian Sea targeting its Haydn/Monn exploration prospects. The deepwater prospect is located 300 km west of the Norwegian mainland at a water depth of 1,064m.

"This latest commercial discovery will further advance our diversification, while high-grading our portfolio in Norway. Ultimately, today's news further solidifies our position as a reliable gas supplier in Europe. It could also unlock significant potential in the area and extend the life of the Aasta Hansteen gas hub," Berislav Gašo, Executive Vice President of Energy at OMV, said. According to Berislav, OMV has a target to increase the share of gas in its production portfolio to 60% by 2030.

Aker BP Starts Production at Tyrving Field in North Sea

Aker BP has started oil production at the Tyrving field in the Alvheim area, located in the central part of the North Sea, close to the British sector.

The Tyrving development consists of three wells and two new subsea installations, or manifolds, tied back to existing infrastructure at East Kameleon and further to the Alvheim floating production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO), Aker BP said in a news release.

Aker BP estimates the recoverable resources in Tyrving to be approximately 25 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe).

The Tyrving development “leverages the planned extended lifetime for the Alvheim field and will increase production while reducing both unit costs and CO2 [carbon dioxide] emissions per barrel,” the company said, adding that Tyrving will operate with “exceptionally low emissions,” estimated at just 0.3 kilograms of CO2 per barrel.

Tyrving is operated by Aker BP, with Petoro and PGNiG Upstream Norway as partners.

21 Oil and Gas Firms Bid on New Exploration Areas in Norway

Norway’s latest license round for new acreage in the best-explored areas on the shelf has attracted bids from 21 oil and gas companies, the Norwegian Energy Ministry said on Friday.

Norway holds an annual license round for exploration acreage in the best-known and mature areas on the Norwegian Continental Shelf—the so-called awards in predefined areas (APA) round. After more than 50 years of exploration activity, the APA rounds currently cover most of the area that has been open to drilling and is available on the shelf.
This year, the energy ministry of Western Europe’s largest oil and gas producer said at the launch of the bidding round in May that it was expanding the acreage in the Barents Sea and the Norwegian Sea, for which companies vying for licenses in mature areas can bid.

The APA round included a further 37 blocks—three in the northwest of the Norwegian Sea and 34 blocks in the eastern Barents Sea.

By the end of the deadline on September 3, the energy ministry had received applications from 21 companies, including Norwegian major Equinor and the local units of ConocoPhillips, Repsol, TotalEnergies, Shell, and OMV, among others.

After reviewing the applications, the energy ministry will now aim to award new production licenses in the announced areas at the beginning of 2025.

The applications confirm considerable interest in exploration near existing fields and infrastructure, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate said.
Commenting on the interest in the exploration round, Norwegian Energy's Terje Aasland said,

“It is very gratifying that the companies still have great faith in the opportunities that lie in further exploration on the Norwegian continental shelf.”

Further exploration efforts and new discoveries would be crucial to slowing the expected decline in Norway’s oil and gas production in the 2030s, the minister said, adding that additional resources from Norway would be an important contributor to Europe’s energy security.

Norvège : la fermeture d'une ferme de bitcoin fait grimper la facture d'électricité des habitants
Après s'être battus pour chasser un centre de minage de bitcoin installé sur leur commune, les habitants d'un archipel de Norvège vont voir leur facture d'électricité grimper de 20 %, raconte le média norvégien « NRK ».

Aux portes de l'Arctique, le premier producteur d'hydroélectricité en Europe a vu ces dernières années se constituer l'une des plus grandes industries minières de bitcoins du Vieux Continent. Avec son prix de l'électricité bon marché, la Norvège est devenue le refuge de plusieurs sociétés de minage comme Kryptovault. Après une sécheresse qui a frappé le sud du pays, ce mineur norvégien a déménagé ses machines gourmandes en électricité dans la région nordique d'Hadsel, en 2022, rapporte le média norvégien « NRK ».

Dans le nord du pays, l'électricité est particulièrement bon marché par rapport au sud, en raison de l'eau abondante qui alimente les installations hydroélectriques de la région. Mais la Norvège ne dispose pas des infrastructures nécessaires pour transférer suffisamment d'électricité produite dans le nord vers le sud. Un processus qui permettrait de rééquilibrer le prix du kilowattheure au niveau national, alors que la production d'électricité du pays dépend à 88 % de ses infrastructures hydroélectriques.

Augmentation de 20 % de la facture d'électricité

Mais une fois installée, Kryptovault a commencé à faire du bruit. Le minage de cryptomonnaie nécessite des ordinateurs puissants pour résoudre des calculs complexes. Des opérations informatiques qui font vrombir des ventilateurs 24 heures sur 24 pour refroidir les machines de ces usines numériques aux allures de data center .

De quoi rendre les riverains hostiles aux fermes de bitcoin, qui ont fait part de plaintes persistantes concernant le bruit des machines et demandé le départ de l'entreprise. Face aux réclamations des habitants, les autorités de Hadsel ont refusé de renouveler le permis temporaire de l'entreprise, ce qui l'a forcé a cessé ses activités depuis le 13 septembre, explique « NRK ».

Problème : le centre de données représentait 20 % des revenus de Noranett, le fournisseur d'électricité local, et consommé l'équivalent de 3.200 foyers par an. Et « lorsqu'un client individuel aussi important s'éteint du jour au lendemain, cela a un impact », explique Robin Jakobsen, responsable du réseau chez Noranett, à « NRK ». Résultat : la facture d'électricité des habitants de la région va augmenter de 20 % pour faire face au départ de ce gros client.

Règlementation

La région d'Hadsel n'est pas la seule à commencer à tourner le dos à l'industrie du minage. Après avoir vu leur installation encouragée, les sociétés minières de crypto ne sont plus les bienvenues en Norvège. Alors que l'exécutif précédent avait abaissé la taxe énergétique imposée aux activités gourmandes en énergie pour inciter les géants de la tech à installer des data centers sur son sol, les travaillistes au pouvoir veulent mettre fin à cette politique incitative. Selon le média norvégien « VG », le gouvernement serait en train de plancher sur une nouvelle réglementation consacrée aux data centers, en partie dans le but de bloquer l'installation des entreprises de minages de crypto dans le pays, jugées trop polluantes.

Norway Sees Rising Oil Production and Falling Gas Output in 2025

Norway expects its oil liquids production to rise by 5.2% next year from 2024, while natural gas production is set to slightly drop by 1.6%, the Norwegian government said in its 2025 budget bill on Monday.

The bill assumes that Norway’s oil production, including condensate and natural gas liquids (NGL), will increase to about 2.1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) in 2025, up by 5.2% from the estimated production this year.

Norway’s natural gas output will drop to 121 billion cubic meters (bcm) next year from an estimated 123 bcm output for this year.

The rise in oil production is set to be driven by the new field Johan Castberg, which is expected to start up later this year, the government said.

The floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) is now anchored at the field and Johan Castberg is on track for start-up towards the end of the year, Equinor said last month.

Johan Castberg, a large field in the Barents Sea, has estimated recoverable volumes of between 450 and 650 million barrels. The field will produce for 30 years, and at its peak, Johan Castberg may produce 220,000 barrels per day, Equinor says.

The government also expects large revenues from the Norwegian petroleum industry in 2024, but they will be lower than in 2023, due to lower expected natural gas prices compared to last year.

“Oil and gas production is expected to remain relatively stable towards 2030,” the government said.

Further exploration efforts and new discoveries would be crucial to slowing the expected decline in Norway’s oil and gas production in the 2030s, the authorities of Western Europe’s largest oil and gas producer have said in recent years.

“Production from the Norwegian continental shelf contributes large amounts of energy and is significant for the energy supply to Europe,” Energy Minister Terje Aasland said today.

“We will continue to develop the petroleum industry and remain a stable and long-term supplier of energy to Europe.”

Le fonds souverain norvégien a gagné 71 milliards d'euros au 3e trimestre

Le fonds souverain de la Norvège, le plus gros de la planète, a gagné près de 71 milliards d'euros au troisième trimestre, profitant de l'embellie boursière liée à la baisse des taux d'intérêt, a-t-il annoncé mardi.

De juillet à septembre, son rendement a atteint 4,4%, contribuant à porter sa valeur totale à 18 870 milliards de couronnes norvégiennes (1.597 milliards d'euros) à la fin du trimestre, a-t-il indiqué dans un communiqué.

"Nous avons obtenu un rendement positif dans tous nos domaines d'investissement", a commenté le numéro deux du fonds, Trond Grande, cité dans le communiqué. "La baisse des taux d'intérêt a entraîné une hausse généralisée du marché boursier", a-t-il noté.

Les placements en actions, qui représentent 71,4% des actifs du fonds, ont affiché un rendement de 4,5% sur le trimestre.

Ce fonds est le plus gros investisseur individuel au monde sur les marchés boursiers. Avec des parts dans près de 9 000 entreprises et 71 pays, il détient en moyenne 1,5% de tous les groupes cotés de la planète.

Ses investissements obligataires (26,8% des actifs) ont, quant à eux, gagné 4,2% sur la période, et ceux dans l'immobilier (1,7% du portefeuille) ont grimpé de 0,8%. Encore très marginaux, les placements dans les projets d'énergies renouvelables non cotés ont pris 10,8%.

La valeur du fonds, qui varie aussi en fonction des cours de change et des apports ou ponctions de l'Etat norvégien, a depuis continué de progresser. Elle dépasse aujourd'hui 19.300 milliards de couronnes norvégiennes, selon le compteur qui s'affiche en temps réel sur le site www.nbim.no.

Mis sur pied au début des années 1990 et alimenté par les revenus pétroliers de l'Etat, le fonds est censé financer les dépenses futures du généreux Etat-providence norvégien.

Le plus gros fonds souverain au monde franchit un cap symbolique

Le fonds souverain de la Norvège, le plus gros au monde, a franchi un cap symbolique vendredi, quand sa valeur a dépassé pour la première fois les 20.000 milliards de couronnes (1.700 milliards d'euros).

Selon le compteur qui affiche sa valeur en temps réel sur son site internet, le fonds frôlait les 20.050 milliards de couronnes aux alentours de 16H00 (15H00 GMT).

Recueillant les revenus pétroliers de l'Etat norvégien, le fonds est censé faire fructifier la richesse nationale en vue de financer les dépenses du généreux Etat-providence quand les gisements d'hydrocarbures du pays seront taris.

Formellement créé en 1990, il avait été abondé pour la première fois en 1996 avec un modeste chèque de 1,981 milliard de couronnes.

Sa valeur avait dépassé les 10.000 milliards de couronnes en 2019 et elle a donc doublé en cinq ans.

Aujourd'hui, elle équivaut à une somme de 3,6 millions de couronnes pour chacune des 5,6 millions de personnes, enfants inclus, qui vivent en Norvège.

Le fonds est essentiellement investi en actions, celles-ci représentant un peu plus de 70% de ses actifs.

Avec des parts dans près de 8.800 entreprises à travers le monde, c'est le plus gros investisseur individuel de la planète, contrôlant à lui seul 1,5% de chaque entreprise cotée.

Il possède aussi un gros portefeuille d'obligations (près de 27% de ses actifs) mais aussi des placements immobiliers ainsi que des parts dans des projets d'énergies renouvelables non cotés.
