Chile sets wind and photovoltaic records in 2024

In December 2024, Chile generated 42% of its electricity from wind and photovoltaic, surpassing the previous monthly record of 39.6% set in September 2024.

This is according to the latest figures from global energy think tank Ember, which show that throughout 2024, solar and wind generated a record 33% of Chile’s electricity, up from 30% in 2023.

In total, renewables provided 70% of the country’s electricity in 2024, while fossil fuels accounted for 30%.

This marks a significant shift from five years ago, when fossil fuels led with 53% and renewables provided 47% of Chile’s electricity.

Ember’s Latin America analyst, Wilmar Suarez commented in a statement: “Chile is a global leader in clean electricity. The environmental objectives that the country has set, such as achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, have provided a key boost to the decarbonisation of its energy matrix. Furthermore, more than 900MW of energy storage installed have set a benchmark for the energy transition in Latin America.”
Ember’s Global Electricity Review published last year highlighted Chile as one of the countries with the highest share of solar in the world in 2023.

To continue advancing in the creation of a clean energy system, Chile enacted the Energy Transition Law in December 2024. Among its priorities is to expedite electricity transmission works to connect renewable generation projects and attract significant investments to strengthen and modernise the electricity sector.

“Chile is at the front of the global race to renewables and is determined to stay there,” continued Suarez. “The Energy Transition Law positions Chile to secure its continued leadership in the global energy transition and unlock clean, affordable energy for its citizens.”

ENGIE termine la construction d'un parc éolien terrestre de 342 MW.

Engie completes the wind farm in Taltal: it is its largest wind energy project in Chile

According to Engie, the wind farm is made up of 57 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 6.0 MW, installed in the municipality of Taltal, located 140 km southeast of the city of Antofagasta.

As part of its energy transition, Engie Chile announced this week that its Lomas del Taltal Wind Farm project, located in the Antofagasta region, with an installed capacity of 342 MW, is now 100% energized.



This site is the company’s asset with the largest renewable energy generation capacity in the country. Through 57 wind turbines, it is able to supply a total of 342 MW of green energy to the National Electric System.
Juan Villavicencio, Managing Director GBU Renewables at Engie Chile, explained that “this achievement is a testament to ENGIE’s commitment to the energy transition and our dedication to providing clean and sustainable energy for the country.”

“We thank everyone who has worked tirelessly to make this project a reality and we remain committed to developing more projects that promote renewable energy in the country,” added the executive.

Following this important step, the Lomas de Taltal Wind Farm will now enter the process for the start of its commercial operation.

Chile deploys 2.14 GW of solar in 2024
Chile installed 2.14 GW of new solar in 2024, bringing its total installed PV capacity to 10.5 GW by year-end, according to the National Energy Commission (CNE).

Chile installed 2.14 GW of new PV capacity in 2024, according to the latest data from the CNE. The nation installed 1.65 GW of solar in 2023.

The country's total installed solar capacity rose to 10.5 GW by December 2024, accounting for 30.1% of its total power generation capacity.

The CNE said that non-conventional renewable energy (ERNC), excluding large hydroelectric plants, represents 47.5% of Chile's total installed capacity, estimated at 34,864 MW.

The report noted that 4.14 GW of solar projects are now under construction, with operations set to begin in April 2027. It also said that Chile has 42,750 MW of solar projects with approved environmental permits and another 9,595 MW under review.

Chili: une panne de courant massive paralyse une grande partie du pays

En pleine saison estivale, le Chili fait face mardi à une panne de courant massive dans une grande partie du pays, entraînant l'évacuation du métro de Santiago, ont annoncé les autorités, dans un contexte de confusion générale parmi la population.

Selon le Service national de prévention des catastrophes (Senapred), la coupure de courant a débuté vers 15H16 locales (18H16 GMT).

"D'après les premiers rapports, la panne pourrait s'étendre de la région d'Arica et Parinacota (au nord) jusqu'à la région des Lacs (au sud)", ont indiqué les équipes de communication du Senapred.

"Pour l'instant, aucune situation d'urgence n'a été signalée à la suite de l'événement", ajoute dans un communiqué l'organisme public.

La chaîne privée Chilevision a cependant diffusé une vidéo sur les réseaux sociaux montrant des personnes prises au piège à plusieurs mètres de hauteur dans un manège d'un parc de la capitale.

Le Chili, qui compte quelque 20 millions d'habitants et l'un des meilleurs réseaux électriques de la région, est confronté à sa pire panne de courant en 15 ans.

À Santiago, des centaines de personnes ont dû être évacuées du métro, soudainement plongé dans le noir. Face à l'afflux de passagers, le reste du système de transport semblait saturé.

"Ils nous ont laissé sortir du travail à cause de la coupure d'électricité, mais maintenant je ne sais pas comment rentrer chez moi parce que tous les bus sont pleins", a témoigné auprès de l'AFP Maria Angélica Roman, employée de 45 ans dans un bureau de recouvrement de la capitale.

- "Dysfonctionnement du système"-
Les autorités n'ont pas encore déterminé les causes de la panne, mais le gouvernement a rapidement écarté la possibilité d'une attaque contre le réseau électrique, évoquant plutôt un dysfonctionnement technique.

"Il n'y a aucune raison de supposer qu'il y a une attaque derrière tout cela. Il s'agirait d'un dysfonctionnement du système lui-même", a déclaré la ministre de l'Intérieur Carolina Toha lors d'une conférence de presse.

Elle a assuré que les hôpitaux et les prisons disposaient de générateurs de secours.

"Dans les prochaines heures, le système électrique devrait revenir à la normale", a-t-elle avancé.

Dans un communiqué publié sur ses réseaux sociaux, le métro de Santiago a confirmé avoir dû évacuer des trains et suspendre le service, qui transporte environ 2,3 millions d'usagers par jour.

"Nos équipes sont déployées dans toutes les stations pour soutenir l'évacuation en toute sécurité. Une fois ce processus terminé, les stations resteront fermées jusqu'à ce que le courant soit rétabli", a déclaré la compagnie.

La confusion s'est propagée de la capitale de sept millions d'habitants à diverses régions du pays.

À Valparaiso, une ville située à 120 km de Santiago, des témoins ont rapporté que des magasins avaient fermé dans le chaos.

"Des policiers gèrent la circulation car il y a beaucoup d'embouteillages dans des rues habituellement peu fréquentées. Tous les magasins ferment", a raconté par téléphone à l'AFP Anadriel Hernandez, un étudiant de 20 ans.

En 2010, une panne dans une centrale électrique de la région du Biobio, dans le sud du Chili, avait plongé des centaines de milliers de personnes dans le noir.

Latin America’s largest solar-plus-storage project goes online
ContourGlobal’s site features six-hour storage capacity alongside 221 MW of solar generation capacity. It is located in northern Chile and is part of a portfolio acquired from Spain’s Grenergy last year.

ContourGlobal has inaugurated the Quillagua photovoltaic solar plant, with 221 MWp of installed generation capacity and 1.2 GWh of energy storage.

The ContourGlobal developer owned by US-based investment giant KKR has inaugurated the Quillagua solar-plus-storage plant in the María Elena commune of Chile’s Antofagasta region.

Commercial operation of the power purchase agreement-backed site – which features 221 MW of solar generation capacity and a 200 MW/1.2 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) – is expected within weeks.

The developer says Quillagua is the largest solar-plus-storage site in Latin America.

The project was acquired from Spanish developer Grenergy late last year, along with the 231 MW solar and 1.3 GWh BESS Víctor Jara solar-plus-storage site in the Tarapacá region. ContourGlobal said Víctor Jara will be ready this year, several months ahead of schedule.

The two sites will generate almost 1.3 TWh of clean energy annually for ContourGlobal, once operational, and mark the developer’s entry into the Chilean market.
