Iran crude reserves rise to 158 billion barrels

Iran’s oil reserves stand at 158 billion barrels, the ISNA news agency reported on Sunday, signaling a slight rise in the Islamic Republic’s estimate.


Last October Iran upped its reserves figure to 150.31 billion barrels from a previous estimate of 138 billion barrels in response to neighbor Iraq increasing its estimate.


The ISNA report did not say how the further increase had been calculated but quoted Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi as saying his plan to concentrate on extracting crude from fields shared with other countries would boost production.


“By the end of the Fifth Development Plan (2010-2015), the country’s oil production must increase to 5.2 million barrels per day (bpd) and this should happen from the country’s joint fields,” it quoted Qasemi as saying.


Officials have put Iran’s current output at between 3.6 million and 4 million bpd, with the latest estimate, given by Hormoz Qalavand, head of the state-run National Iranian Southern Oil Company to the semi-official Fars news agency on Wednesday, of 3.92 million bpd.

Pétrole: un groupe russe décroche en Iran un contrat d'un md USD

TEHERAN, 18 décembre - RIA Novosti

Le groupe pétrolier russe Tatneft et la Compagnie nationale iranienne du pétrole (NIOC) ont signé dimanche un accord préliminaire d'extraction de pétrole lourd au gisement de Zagheh (sud-ouest) d'une valeur d'un milliard de dollars, annoncent les médias iraniens.

Selon les médias, le document qui a été signé à Téhéran prévoit d'extraire 7.000 barils de pétrole lourd par jour lors d'une première étape, la production pouvant être portée ultérieurement à 55.000 barils par jour.

Le groupe Tatneft fait partie de la première dizaine de producteurs de pétrole en Russie, assurant 80% de l'extraction pétrolière du Tatarstan.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China will halve its crude oil imports from Iran in March compared to average monthly purchases a year ago, as a dispute over payments and prices stretches into a third month, oil industry sources involved in the deals said on Monday.

China is the top buyer of Iranian oil, taking around 20 percent of total exports, but it has since January cut purchases by around 285,000 barrels per day (bpd), or just over half of the total daily amount it imported in 2011.

Negotiators from both nations, however, are expected to hold talks as early as this week in Beijing to resolve the payments dispute, the sources said, adding that the European Union embargo on Iranian crude gave China an advantage in any talks.

Officials from Sinopec Corp, Asia's top refiner that processes nearly 90 percent of China's Iranian oil purchases, are expected to meet counterparts from the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), the sources added. Term supply contracts are usually agreed upon by January.

"For March loadings, it will be the same cuts as the previous month," said one senior trading official.

A second industry official, whose firm processes Iranian oil, said: "Our Iranian volumes disappeared for the whole of the first quarter."

Last year, China imported 27.76 million tonnes, or about 555,000 bpd, of Iranian crude, a record amount and a 30 percent increase on the previous year.

BUYER OF LAST RESORT?

Tensions between Iran and the West rose last month when European Union leaders agreed to embargo Iranian oil by July and to freeze the assets of Iran's central bank, joining the United States in a new round of measures aimed at discouraging Tehran's nuclear development programme.

Iran has warned that it could cut off oil exports to Europe before July 1, and also threatened to close the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping lane, a move Washington said it would not tolerate.

The reduced volumes from Iran coincide with a drop in Sudanese crude oil supplies due to a dispute over transport fees between the north and the newly independent south, but industry sources said Sinopec appeared to be unaffected as it had secured alternative supplies.

Sinopec, through its trading arm Unipec, has already snapped up additional cargoes from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Russia, Australia and West Africa. The refiner is likely to buy more crude from the spot market to cover March requirements, traders said.

China is also set to boost Iraqi oil liftings by some 50 percent this year versus last.

Analysts said that well-supplied China is unlikely, then, to become the main buyer of any surplus crude that Iran decides to sell to ease the effect of sanctions, despite the strong political and trade ties between the two nations.

Iranian oil minister Rostam Qasemi, however, is due to visit China within the next 10 days to discuss a range of energy issues, according to a report on the Iranian oil ministry's website published on Saturday.

"Extra supplies from Saudi Arabia would be the most obvious alternative (to Iranian crude), but China has also been buying greater volumes of other grades like (Russia's) ESPO on the spot market, and been prepared to pay higher premiums for them," said a Singapore-based Western trader.

Iran is China's third-largest supplier, after Saudi Arabia and Angola.

The 2011 supplies from Iran included China's first term deal for about 75,000 bpd of Iranian South Pars condenstate, a very light crude oil that Sinopec bought from NIOC to feed its petrochemical plants.

But the Chinese firm has dropped the condensate off its loading programmes in the first quarter, sources said.

UAE, Qatar, Oman to buy $2b electricity from Iran

TEHRAN - Iran will export up to $2 billion of electricity to the UAE, Qatar and Oman via subsea cables, Deputy Energy Minister Mohammad Behzad has said.

Last week, Iran Offshore Oil Company (IOOC) struck a $3.8 billion deal with Iran’s Power Projects Management Company (MAPNA) for the development of the Persian Gulf's Forouz B gas field and an associated gas-fired power project, of which most of the output will be exported to the Persian Gulf Arab states.

“The field will produce 3000 megawatts of electricity… which a little of it will be consumed at home and the rest will be exported to neighboring countries particularly (the United Arab) Emirates, Oman and Qatar,” Behzad told the Fars news agency.

The development plan, which is set for completion within five and a half years, aims to produce one billion cubic feet of gas, 10,000 barrels of condensates, and 3,000 megawatts per day of power in the first phase, MAPNA Managing Director Abbas Aliabadi told Shana news agency.

Aliabadi was quoted previously as saying that the project will export a percentage of the power to neighboring countries.

By the end of the fifth five-year economic development plan (2015), Iran will boost its electricity generation capacity by 25GW to reach 73GW, Energy Minister Majid Namjou said on February 7.

The country’s electricity exports will total $1 billion by the end of this current calendar year (March 19, 2012).

Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Iranian and Armenian oil ministers will ink an agreement on Wednesday based on which Iran will export gasoline and oil product to the Central Asian neighbor.

According to the agreement, Iran will supply Armenia with Gasoline, Gas oil, kerosene, and jet fuel, Mehr news agency reported.

Iran’s gasoline and gas oil production capacities are currently around 50 million liters and 100 million liters per day respectively.

Iran is now exporting gasoline and diesel fuel to neighboring countries, the managing director of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company has said.

NIORDC Managing Director Alireza Zeighami said that Iraq, Armenia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan are now importing or have called for the importation of gasoline and diesel fuel from Iran.

Iran to develop biggest joint oil field with Saudi Arabia

The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) has started developing Iran's biggest offshore oil field in the Persian Gulf which is shared with Saudi Arabia.

A report published by Mehr News Agency said the operation has begun by sending the first jacket related to the development of Forouzan oil field to the Persian Gulf on Sunday, April 29.

The huge structure made by a special jacket manufacturing yard in Iran's southwestern port city of Khorramshahr, weighs about 4,000 tons and is carried by a special vessel. If climatic conditions are good, it will be installed by late May, the report added.

The second jacket related to the Forouzan oil field development project will be sent to the offshore field within the next few weeks.

The main goal of the Forouzan oil field development project is to extract more than 300 million barrels of crude oil in the next 25 years.

The field will also yield about 250 million cubic feet per day of natural gas which will be transferred to Kharg Island via an undersea pipeline.

Forouzan oil field, in the Persian Gulf, is shared with Saudi Arabia. Extraction of oil from the field started in the early 1970s and the field produced about 550 million barrels of oil by the end of 2002.

The field experienced its peak production in late 1978 when it produced 180,000 barrels per day of crude oil.

The development of Forouzan oil field is a priority project for Iran's Oil Ministry and the field is expected to yield 5,000-10,000 barrels per day of crude oil by the middle of the next Iranian calendar year (starts March 20, 2013).

Forouzan oil field is located 100 kilometers southwest of Kharg Island. It was discovered in 1966 with estimated in-place reserves of 2.309 billion barrels of crude. The field is known as Marjan in Saudi Arabia.

Iran shares oil and gas fields with most of its neighbors in the Persian Gulf region as well as with Turkmenistan in the Caspian Sea.

Energy officials in Tehran said in July 2011 that as much as 35 percent of the country's energy development budget will go towards the development of joint oil and gas fields.

Tehran: Iran will likely expand how much oil it's storing at sea as sanctions deter China, Japan and other buyers from purchasing the country's crude, according to RS Platou Markets.

The second-largest producer among the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries had as much as 35 million barrels of unsold oil on tankers at the end of April, compared with 8 million a month earlier, the International Energy Agency said last week.

The glut at sea is expanding because Iran's biggest importers cut purchases by 1 million barrels a day last quarter, Frode Moerkedal, an Oslo-based analyst at Platou, the investment-banking unit of Norway's largest shipbroker, said by phone yesterday.

"A lot of it has to go to storage," Moerkedal said. "If no new buyers come in they'll have to store more and even have to cut oil production."

Shipments to China and Japan, the two largest buyers, are slumping as European Union and US sanctions targeting Iran's nuclear programme intensify. As much as half of the country's tanker fleet may be storing, the IEA, a Paris-based adviser to industrialised countries, said in a report on Friday.

Chinese imports

China, Iran's largest customer, imported about 350,000 barrels a day last quarter, 43 per cent less than in the last three months of 2011, customs data show.

Shipments to Japan, the second-largest, fell 30 per cent from a year earlier, according to the trade ministry.

Iran produced 3.3 million barrels a day of crude in April, making it the second-largest member of Opec, after Saudi Arabia, which had output of 9.8 million barrels a day, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Iranian storage is tying up the equivalent of 17 supertankers, Platou estimates. That effectively cuts the supply of vessels available to trade and boosts shipping costs, Moerkedal said.

Iran Finds First Caspian Sea Oil For More Than A Century

Iran has discovered oil in its Caspian Sea waters for the first time in more than a century, the state-run Fars news agency reported.

The deposit was found at a depth of 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) during drilling on a natural-gas field and may contain 10 billion barrels of crude, Fars said, citing the National Iranian Oil Co. That's equal to 7 percent of Iran's known reserves.

While Iran is the second-largest oil producer in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, most existing fields are in the south and the Arabian Gulf. Hampered by sanctions over nuclear ambitions, it doesn't yet extract crude in the Caspian, where nations including Azerbaijan are tapping deposits and demarcation lines over territory are disputed.

"Iran has never found anything in its section of the Caspian because it's deep water, so these would be the first wells ever drilled," said Robin Mills, head of consulting at Dubai-based Manaar Energy Consulting and Project Management. "Ten billion barrels is certainly something to talk about. The question is whether Iran has the technology to develop it.

"The oil strike is Iran's first in the Caspian Sea for 104 years, Fars cited Khazar Exploration and Production Co. Managing Director Ali Osouli as saying.

Iran has proven reserves of 151 billion barrels, according to figures on the OPEC website based on 2010 data. The maximum estimated deposit at the Caspian Sea site would be slightly less than in the whole of Algeria, with 12.2 billion, the data shows.

Qassemi, who was visiting Iran's Pertropars Company on Sunday said, "After 10 to 15 years of negotiations with the Chinese, the two sides reached some agreements on the development of Azadegan and Yadavaran oil fields."

Iran currently allocates $20 billion a year to develop fields and $10 billion on maintaining output, the report said. In the next decade, maintaining production will cost $50 billion, with a similar sum required for development, it said.

TEHRAN (FNA)- India began using its currency to purchase Iranian oil in a move to bolster trade with the Islamic Republic.


After tightening US sanctions made it difficult for New Delhi to pay Iran for oil in dollars, Tehran agreed to accept nearly half the payment in Indian rupees.

The arrangement became operational recently. Rafique Ahmed with the Federation of Export Organizations of India said it will give a major boost to trade between the two countries as Tehran will have to use the rupees it earns from Indian oil companies to buy goods from New Delhi.

Les effets des embargos européen et américain commencent à se faire ressentir.

L’Agence Internationale de l’Energie publie son rapport mensuel ce vendredi 10 août. Selon ces chiffres, la production iranienne de brut a plongé sous la barre des 3 millions de barils par jour (mbj). En juin, le pays en produisait 3 millions et 3,2 millions au mois de mai.
"Juillet est le premier mois complet où les sanctions des Etats-Unis et de l'Union européenne visant les ventes de pétrole iranien se sont combinées", l'embargo étant entré entièrement en vigueur le 1er juillet, explique l'AIE.
La production a donc atteint son plus bas niveau depuis la fin des années 80. Avant la révolution islamique de 1979, la production culminait au-delà des 5 millions de barils par jour. Au début des années 80, elle avait ensuite chuté à 1,5 mbj. Pour la première fois aussi, la production iranienne est passée en dessous de celle de son voisin irakien.
Affectée ensuite par la guerre avec l'Irak, elle était restée à peine au-dessus de 2 mbj avant de remonter significativement aux environs des 4 millions de barils par jour depuis le début des années 90, selon les chiffres publiés par le département américain de l’énergie.

L’AIE AMPUTE SES PRÉVISIONS DE DEMANDE

Dans son rapport mensuel, l’AIE fait également le point sur la demande mondiale de pétrole en 2012 et 2013. Une "combinaison de prix toujours élevés et d'un contexte économique médiocre" pousse l’agence a amputé ses prévisions pour la période.
"La croissance économique molle pourrait restreindre la progression de la demande de pétrole à 0,9 million de barils par jour (Mb/j) en 2012 et 0,8 Mb/j en 2013", soit 0,3 Mb/j et 0,4 Mb/j de moins que la précédente prévision", estime le bras énergétique des pays développés dans son rapport mensuel.
Selon les nouvelles prévisions de l'AIE, la demande totale de brut dans le monde serait de 89,6 millions de barils par jour en 2012 et 90,5 millions en 2013, la hausse de la demande étant principalement portée par les pays émergents.
Symptôme de ce ralentissement, la demande pétrolière en juin des deux principaux consommateurs mondiaux, les Etats-Unis et la Chine, a été revue en baisse de près de 100 000 b/j pour les premiers et de 600 000 b/j pour le second.
