Jordan is close to commissioning two nuclear reactors, to be built about 100 kilometers south of the Syrian border, as atomic energy spreads through the Arab world, even as uprisings convulse the region.

Amman will decide next month which of competing Russian and French-Japanese led consortiums will build two one-gigawatt nuclear reactors near the capital at an estimated cost of 12 billion euros, said Khaled Toukan, chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission.

While it was unclear how the Jordan project would be financed, insiders said it was given impetus by seed funding drawn from a broad development aid grant given to Jordan by the UAE. A Jordanian nuclear delegation is visiting the UAE this week. Observers said the UAE government was keen to help Amman because it wanted access to the country’s atomic fuel reserves and technical expertise for its own project to build four nuclear reactors with a total 5.6-gigawatt capacity by 2020.

Areva fournira du combustible à un réacteur de recherche jordanien

Areva a annoncé hier avoir remporté un contrat auprès du consortium coréen Kaeri / Daewoo pour la fourniture d'éléments de combustible au réacteur JRTR (Jordan Research and Training Reactor) actuellement en construction en Jordanie.

L'accord porte sur la livraison de combustible nucléaire pour le premier cœur du réacteur et pour une recharge additionnelle. La livraison des éléments de combustible est prévue début 2015.

La construction du réacteur de recherche JRTR par le consortium Kaeri / Daewoo constitue une étape importante pour la Jordanie dans l’acquisition des compétences nécessaires à la R&D et la production d’électricité d'origine nucléaire.

Le JRTR aura une puissance de 5 MW, pouvant être étendue à 10 MW. Il permettra d'effectuer des recherches sur l'irradiation neutronique, de fournir des services pour la production de radio-isotopes à usage médical, et de former des ingénieurs et scientifiques jordaniens aux technologies et aux opérations nucléaires.

"Après la signature en 2011 de contrats portant sur la fourniture à Daewoo d'uranium faiblement enrichi et sur la livraison au consortium Kaeri / Daewoo de combustibles prototypes, ce succès confirme la qualité de la collaboration entre Areva et ses partenaires coréens dans le secteur du combustible pour réacteur nucléaire de recherche" a déclaré Benoît Bazire, Directeur de la BU Propulsion et Réacteurs de recherche d'Areva.

Solaire thermodynamique : SolarEuromed gagne l'appel d'offres jordanien

SOLAR Euromed, une entreprise française spécialisée dans le solaire thermodynamique à concentration a annoncé hier avoir été sélectionnée par le NERC** du Royaume de Jordanie, l'équivalent du CNRS français, pour la réalisation d'une centrale solaire thermodynamique à concentration (CSP) et d'un laboratoire de recherche.

Cette opération a été réalisée suite à une procédure d'appel d'offres international à laquelle plusieurs fournisseurs de technologie solaire thermodynamique - notamment allemands - ont répondu.

Ce projet pilote cofinancé par l'Union Européenne constitue un premier jalon pour le développement de la technologie solaire thermodynamique sur le sol jordanien.

Traversant une crise énergétique causée en partie par l’arrêt des exportations de gaz Egyptien, le NERC a identifié la technologie Solaire thermodynamique à concentration comme indispensable au développement du secteur énergétique Jordanien. Validant cette orientation, la Banque Mondiale a accepté de financer 70 ME sur les 600 ME d'un futur projet de centrale CSP de 100 MW en Jordanie.

The $130m reactor, which will have a 5MW capacity, is to be built on the campus of the Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irbid. It will be used within a new national centre for nuclear science and technology to train future nuclear engineers and specialists. The centre will also investigate methods for using nuclear power to desalinate water.

A contract to build the new facility was awarded to a Korean consortium led by Daewoo Engineering & Construction in 2009, and the foundation work for the reactor has already been completed, alongside some of the training facilities.

However, the issue of the permit allows for construction of the reactor to proceed following safety assessments and seismic, environment and quality control permits.

Russia firms to build Jordan's first nuclear plant

AFP - Energy-poor Jordan said Monday it has picked two Russian firms to build and run its first nuclear power plant, which is expected to cost around $10 billion (7 billion euros).

"Russia's Rusatom Overseas will operate the plant as a strategic partner. Russia's Atomstroyexport will be the provider of the nuclear technology," Information Minister Mohammad Momani told reporters.

"The governments of Russia and Jordan will sign an agreement on the project, which will cost around $10 billion or maybe less."

The plant will include two 1,000-megawatt reactors, said Khaled Tukan, head of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, who attended the press conference.

"The project will be carried out in two stages. In the first two-year stage, detailed studies will be conducted and infrastructure will be built," Tukan said.

"In the second stage, the two sides will sign a contract to start constructing the plant. The Russians will contribute 49 percent to the cost of the plant, and Jordan will handle 51 percent."

The plant, to be completed in 2023, will be built in Amra, a desert area north of the capital Amman.

"Jordan imports 97 percent of its energy needs. The country needs to take advantage of nuclear energy, which will also enhance national economy," Tukan said.

The desert kingdom, which has very limited resources, in August gave the go-ahead for a five-megawatt nuclear research reactor at the Jordan University for Sciences and Technology near the northern city of Irbid.

De son côté, Areva a pris acte de la décision de la JAEC (Jordan Atomic Energy Commission) de ne pas retenir l'ATMEA 1 pour son projet de construction de deux réacteurs nucléaires. La Jordanie avait pourtant pré-sélectionné le réacteur ATMEA 1, reconnaissant que la technologie correspondait aux besoins et aux exigences du Royaume en matière de sûreté et de compétitivité.

La Jordanie et la Russie signeront un accord nucléaire

La Jordanie a annoncé vendredi qu'elle signerait le mois prochain un accord avec la Russie sur les études du premier réacteur nucléaire du pays, a rapporté l'agence de presse d'Etat Petra.
Le président de la Commission de l'énergie atomique de Jordanie, Khald Toukan, a fait savoir que l'accord qui serait signé à Moscou porterait sur l'évaluation de l'environnement et les études sur le financement et les coûts du réacteur.

Les études seront achevées d'ici deux ans, a-t-il indiqué.

Amman et Moscou signeront un autre accord à la fin de cette année, dans lequel les deux parties s'engageront dans ce projet.

En octobre dernier, le gouvernement jordanien a approuvé l'exportateur russe de service d'énergie nucléaire Atomstroyexport,en tant que fournisseur de technologies du premier réacteur nucléaire jordanien.

En vertu de l'accord, Atomstroyexport assurera au réacteur jordanien la techonologie VVER1000-AES99, alors que le coût initial de la construction du réacteur ayant une capacité de 1 000 mégawatts s'élèvera à 10 milliards de dollars américains.

Chaque annéée, la Jordanie importe environ 96% de ses besoins énergétiques.

World Bank funds solar power (photovoltaic) in Jordan

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has announced this Wednesday (15th) the approval of a US$ 207.5 million loan package for the construction of seven photovoltaic plants in Jordan. The IFC is the World Bank’s private sector arm.

According to an IFC press release, the full project, which provides for the building of 12 plants, will be the largest private solar power initiative in the Middle East and North Africa.

Out of the total amount, US$ 91.5 million will come from the IFC’s own account. The remaining US$ 116 million will be supplied by the Arab Bank (Bahrain), the European Arab Bank, FMO (the Dutch development bank), FinnFund (a Finnish development company) and from the Fund for International Development Fund of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec).

The first seven plants will have a combined capacity of 102 megawatts and will be Jordan’s first private industry-scale solar photovoltaic parks. They should generate 212 gigawatt/hours per year of power and should cut down carbon dioxide emissions by 123,000 tonnes per year.

La Jordanie sera capable d'exporter de l'uranium d'ici à 2020, a annoncé mardi le président de la Commission de l'énergie atomique de Jordanie, Khaled Toukan.

La Jordanie a découvert des gisements d'uranium s'élevant à 65 000 tonnes, suffisantes pour couvrir les besoins du pays pour 90 ans, a précisé M. Toukan, cité par l'agence de presse étatique Petra.

Le royaume mettra en place sa toute première unité de production d'uranium en 2015, a-t-il poursuivi.
Le pays est déterminé à aller de l'avant en ce qui concerne son projet de construire un réacteur nucléaire d'ici à 2022 ayant une puissance de 2 000 mégawatts, a souligné M. Toukan, faisant remarquer que les centrales produiront de l'électricité à moindre coût.

Le projet nucléaire est crucial pour la Jordanie, qui importe chaque année environ 97% de ses besoins en énergie, a conclu le président de la Commission de l'énergie atomique.

Eight local and foreign companies were granted licences Sunday to start procedures to build eight solar power plants in the Kingdom, according to the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC).

The commission gave a 20-year licence to each of the eight companies to build solar plants in the south of the Kingdom, EMRC Chief Commissioner Farouq Hiari said in an e-mail sent to The Jordan Times Sunday.

The power plants have a total capacity of 150 megawatts, he said, and will be built at a total cost of $300 million.

La Jordanie et la Russie ont signé mardi un accord d' un montant de 10 milliards de dollars américains qui facilitera la mise en œuvre de la première centrale nucléaire jordanienne, a rapporté l' agence de presse d' État Petra.

Le président du Commissariat jordanien à l' énergie atomique Khaled Toukan a déclaré que l' accord était crucial pour la mise en œuvre du projet.

M. Toukan a déclaré qu' en vertu de l' accord, la Russie fournira du combustible nucléaire à la centrale, ajoutant que la Jordanie a le droit de renvoyer en Russie ses déchets de combustible nucléaire.

En octobre 2013, la Jordanie a choisi la société russe Atomstroyexport, un grand exportateur de services dans le domaine de l' énergie nucléaire, comme fournisseur de technologies pour la première centrale nucléaire jordanienne.

La Jordanie a pour objectif d' accroître son autosuffisance énergétique et de réduire ses importations en construisant le réacteur nucléaire, qui sera associé à deux centrales électriques de 1 000 mégawatts.

Le premier parc solaire, de 5.6 MW, a été inauguré par le roi Abdullah II.

King Abdullah II on Sunday inaugurated the Royal Hashemite Court’s grid connected solar power plant which was established inside the Royal Court compound.

The 5.6 megawatt plant came in line with His Majesty’s directives to build similar projects of renewable energy in order to encourage switching to this source of power. It will cover the Royal Court’s needs of such energy, reduce expenditure and preserve the environment.
