Jordan-French uranium exploration "promising", says official

Amman - Jordanian officials on Saturday said initial results from uranium exploration being carried out in a joint venture with the French nuclear company Areva in central Jordan were 'promising'.

'The results so far are promising and positive and indicate the existence of uranium ores in commercial quantities,' Khalid Touqan, the head of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) said.

The exploration of the 1,400-square-kilometre site by the Jordan Energy Company and Areva that is set to be expanded at a later stage, he said.

Last year, the Jordanian government signed an agreement with Areva for the extraction of uranium and a nuclear cooperation accord with France. It has similar deals with Britain, the United States, Canada, China, Russia and South Korea.

Jordan's uranium reserves are estimated at around 140,000 tons, plus a further 59,000 tons in phosphate deposits.

BEIJING, July 6 (Reuters) - China is expected to ship home the first batch of uranium resources from Jordan next year, the Shanghai Securities News reported on Monday, citing a top executive with CNNC, China's leading nuclear power developer.
"We and other foreign firms would have opened the first uranium mine in Jordan for nearly three years, and will take home uranium in 2010," CNNC's General Manager Kang Rixin was quoted as saying during a weekend meeting.
The first batch of uranium resources was around 700 tonnes, according to a report posted on a website run by Caijing magzine.
Khaled Toukan, head of Jordan's atomic energy authority, said in April that the Middle East country was working with CNNC on two uranium mining blocks and CNNC could join the bidding to build a nuclear power plant in Jordan.

Un réacteur nucléaire en Jordanie pour 2013

La Jordanie compte devenir exportatrice d'électricité en 2030 grâce au développement de ses capacités nucléaires. Un premier réacteur pourrait entrer en service en 2013.
Le directeur de la Commission jordanienne de l'énergie atomique JAEC, Khaled Toukan, prévoit un doublement de la consommation électrique du pays au cours des 20 prochaines années.

Pour y répondre, le pays compte exploiter ses ressources en uranium, contenues notamment au sein de roches carbonatées et du phosphate, localisées dans 4 régions. Les réserves sont estimées à 130 000 tonnes dans les phosphates, et 70 000 tonnes de roches carbonatées.

Un réacteur nucléaire pourrait être construit au sud de la Jordanie, au bord de la Mer Rouge et à proximité des frontières israélienne et égyptienne. L'étude du site est confiée à Tractebel (GDF Suez).

Ce premier réacteur pourrait être mis en service en 2013. Il offrirait une puissance de 1 000 MW. Deux autres réacteurs pourraient voir le jour sur le même site en 2018 et 2020.

Argentina, Jordan sign nuclear agreement


BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Argentina and Jordan signed a cooperation agreement on the pacific use of nuclear energy Tuesday, the Argentine Foreign Ministry announced.

The ministry said in a communique that Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana met with his Jordanian counterpart Nasser Judeh in the United States on Tuesday, where they signed the agreement.

The agreement includes cooperation on basic research and applicable areas; production and use of radioactive isotopes; exploration of metallic minerals; design, construction and operation of nuclear energy plants and research reactors.

"It is the result of negotiations begun last October, after the visit of Jordan's King Abdullah II to Argentina, who agreed with (Argentina's) President Cristina Fernandez to strengthen the ties between both nations in different areas," Taiana explained.

Taiana is in New York together with Fernandez for the 64th Session of the UN General Assembly.

"Argentina is recognized for its development on the pacific and non-proliferative use of nuclear energy. We are exporters of nuclear technology, and this agreement with Jordan is a recognition of that work and the excellence of our scientists," Taiana said.

He added that Jordan was introducing nuclear power to generate electricity, and was ready for its first research reactor and radioisotope production.

The state-owned Argentine National Institute of Applied Research, which has designed and constructed seven research reactors, will bid for the allotment.

Krolik, tu y comprends quelque chose à ces accords tous zimuth des Jordaniens dans le secteur nucléaire ?

Et bien je crois que les Jordaniens veulent avoir un max d'étudiants formés de différentes origines en les plaçant dans différents pays.
Maintenant il faut voir les détails, aplication pacifique de l'énergie nucléaire, il y a le médical, l'industriel contrôle, irradiateurs alimentaire, les réacteurs de recherche etc..
Et de se faire reconnaître comme partenaire amical en étant dans une région du monde où les soubressauts politiques et militaires sont nombreux..Ils cherchent à faire ami-ami avec un peu tout le monde avant de franchir le pas effectivement.
C'est une politique.. la leur.. Mais au moins c'est une politique construite.

AMMAN, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's Atomic Energy Commission announced Tuesday the launch of the site feasibility study for the Kingdom's first nuclear power plant.

By January, it will be clear if the location is feasible to go ahead with the required procedures to establish the nuclear plant, head of the Commission Khalid Touqan said Tuesday at a meeting with concerned agencies and representatives of the companies implementing the study.

The two-year study entails evaluating the geological stability, geophysics, soil characteristics and risk management of the proposed site of the plant, located about 12 km to the east of the Aqaba coastline.

The first three months of the study will be devoted to checking on the suitability of the site.

The plant, expected to initially generate 750 to 1,100 megawatts of electricity, is scheduled to be operational by 2020.

The study, conducted by the Belgian Tractabel Engineering (GDF-SUEZ), along with Jordan's Arab Consultants Bureau and France's Bureau Veritas, will also evaluate the impact of the power plant on the environment, the public health and safety.

Jordan, which is planning to build three to four nuclear reactors for the generation of power, has inked nuclear cooperation agreements with several countries such as France, Russia, China and Argentina.

Belgian Ambassador to Jordan Johan Indekeu and French Ambassador to Jordan Corinne Breuze were also present at the meeting.

BP va se joindre à la compagnie pétrolière jordanienne National Petroleum Company (NPC) pour exploiter une concession onshore dans le nord-est du pays.

Le géant britannique, qui précise que l'opération doit encore être validée par le gouvernement et le parlement de Jordanie, souligne que la concession couvre environ 7000 kilomètres carré, parmi lesquels se trouve le champ de gaz Risha.

Jordan selects Korean consortium to build nuclear reactor

Commission (JAEC) on Thursday chose a South Korean consortium to build the country's first nuclear research reactor, chairman of the evaluation panel Nidal Zoabi said.

The coalition, comprising the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and the Daewoo engineering group, won the contract in competition with three other consortia, he added.

The 5-megawatt Korean reactor, which represents the best technology in terms of performance and safety, was chosen by experts from the JAEC and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Zoabi said.

The research reactor, to be built at the Jordan University for Sciences and Technology (JUST), will act as the staging point of a Jordanian centre for technology and sciences which will shoulder the responsibility of training new generations of nuclear engineers and scientists, he added.

Zoabi said the JAEC would conduct negotiations with the Korean consortium during the coming months on technical and financial aspects before signing the contract.

The Jordanian government has so far concluded nuclear cooperation accords with South Korea and six other nuclear powers to obtain the necessary know-how to launch a nuclear programme for peaceful uses.

Amman - Jordan and Spain on Wednesday signed an agreement for nuclear cooperation for peaceful uses, particularly in water desalination and electricity generation.

The accord was signed by President of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC), Khalid Touqan, and the visiting Spanish Minister of State for Trade, Silvia Iranzo.

'Jordan and Spain are partners in the search for new energy resources to lessen dependence on conventional fuel in the light of the rising crude prices,' Touqan said at the signing ceremony.

Iranzo described the agreement as 'a milestone along Jordan's endeavours to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes' and trimming its oil bill.

Under the agreement, Spain will help Jordan to train personnel in peaceful uses of nuclear energy in industry, agriculture, medicine and environment.

The accord also provides for dealing with nuclear waste, ensuring nuclear safety and enactment of legislation relating to the country's nuclear programme.

It is the eighth agreement to be signed by Jordan with nuclear powers for cooperation in the peaceful use of atomic energy.

Similar accords were so far signed with France, China, South Korea, Canada, Russia, Britain and Argentina.

The JAEC also signed memos of understanding with both the United States and Japan in the run-up for concluding nuclear cooperation agreements with the two countries.

Jordan is negotiating with Romania and the Czech Republic to explore the prospects of signing similar accords in future, the official Petra news agency said.

Fillon en Jordanie, convoitée par le nucléaire français


PARIS, 18 février (Reuters) - Après une étape syrienne à dominante économique, François Fillon s'efforcera dimanche en Jordanie de défendre les intérêts français dans la compétition pour la construction de la première centrale nucléaire du royaume hachémite.
La France a perdu en décembre dernier un contrat de 40 milliards de dollars pour la construction et l'exploitation de quatre réacteurs nucléaires aux Emirats arabes unis.
Contre toute attente, c'est le consortium sud-coréen emmené par Korea Electric Power (KEPCO) , par ailleurs bien implanté en Jordanie, qui a emporté la mise.

Contrairement à ses voisins riches en pétrole, la Jordanie dépend des importations pour la quasi-totalité de sa consommation énergétique (environ 95%) et recherche une source alternative pour produire l'électricité et l'eau dessalée.
Le royaume projette de construire une centrale nucléaire à quelque 25 kilomètres de la ville d'Aqaba à l'horizon 2015 et d'autres ultérieurement.
Une étude d'impact en termes d'environnement et de sécurité a été lancée.
"Nous sommes en discussion avec les Jordaniens. Une pré-sélection des compétiteurs est prévue au printemps pour une décision finale fin 2010", précise-t-on dans l'entourage de François Fillon.

La Jordanie a signé un accord de coopération nucléaire civil avec la France en août 2008. Un tel accord la lie également à la Chine et la Russie.
Anne Lauvergeon, présidente du directoire d'Areva , fera partie de la délégation française à Amman où François Fillon rencontrera dimanche le roi Abdallah II de Jordanie.
Areva a signé en octobre 2008 un accord avec la Jordanie pour l'exploration et l'exploitation des mines d'uranium du centre du royaume. Anne Lauvergeon signera dimanche une convention d'exploitation.

Le groupe estime que le potentiel uranifère de la Jordanie est prometteur en vue du développement d'un programme de production d'électricité d'origine nucléaire.

Un consortium sud-coréen a signé mardi un accord pour la construction en Jordanie du premier réacteur nucléaire du pays pour un montant total de quelque 130 millions de dollars, selon l'agence officielle Petra.

L'accord prévoit la construction par l'institut public Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute et la compagnie Daewoo Engineering and Construction du réacteur sur le site de l'université des sciences et de technologies, près de la ville d'Irbid dans le nord de la Jordanie, a indiqué l'agence officielle jordanienne Petra.

Le réacteur de recherche de 5 MW « sera le point d'appui du programme nucléaire pacifique de la Jordanie », a indiqué le Premier ministre Samir Rifaï, cité par Petra, lors de la cérémonie de signature. Le réacteur doit être achevé en 2014 et être opérationnel l'année suivante après avoir subi une série de tests de sûreté, a indiqué le chef de la commission de l'énergie atomique jordanienne Khaled Tukan, qui a signé l'accord.

Il servira de centre d'entraînement au personnel travaillant dans le domaine du nucléaire en Jordanie, a-t-il précisé à Petra, ajoutant que sa commission contribuerait à hauteur de 60 millions de dollars au coût, le reste étant financé par un prêt du gouvernent sud-coréen. Le consortium sud-coréen a remporté l'appel d'offres en décembre face à des concurrents d'Argentine, de Chine ou de Russie.

South Korea Fails To Win Deal For Nuclear Reactor Export To Jordan

SEOUL, May 11 (Bernama) -- South Korea has failed to win a deal to export a commercial nuclear reactor to Jordan due to differences over financing and other terms, industry and government sources said Tuesday.

According to the sources from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and the energy industry, the Jordan government has selected a consortium between France's Areva SA and Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. as its preferred negotiation partner for the construction of a commercial nuclear reactor.

"Jordan recently chose the France-Japan consortium as a preferred partner for the construction deal," a source said on condition of anonymity, adding that South Korea was side-stepped due to differences with the Jordanian government over financing and construction methods.

The failure came after a South Korean consortium won a deal in January to build a nuclear research reactor for Jordan, raising hopes it would pave the way for exporting commercial nuclear reactors to the Middle Eastern nation down the road.

South Korea became an exporter of nuclear technology late last year when it secured a multi-billion-dollar deal to construct four nuclear reactors in the United Arab Emirates.

The Seoul government is currently in talks with Turkey on a similar deal to export Korea-designed nuclear power plants.

Cinq mois après l'échec de la filière nucléaire française face au coréen Kepco dans l'appel d'offres géant d'Abu Dhabi, Areva repart dans la course en Jordanie.

Voilà qui peut consoler Areva, dans la tourmente du rapport Roussely : selon plusieurs sources, la Commission jordanienne de l'énergie atomique (JAEC) a présélectionné lundi trois technologies, dont le réacteur de moyenne puissance Atmea développé par le champion français du nucléaire et son partenaire japonais Mitsubishi, indiquent les Echos. En revanche, le réacteur proposé par le coréen Kepco n'a pas franchi la première étape de sélection. Les deux autres qualifiés sont le réacteur russe VVER de Rosatom et le Candu du canadien EACL.

La Jordanie entend choisir la technologie l'an prochain. Areva, qui s'est allié avec GDF Suez pour l'exploitation, a signé en février un accord minier avec le Royaume.

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) - Jordan and South Korea have signed a $70 million loan agreement to finance the kingdom's first nuclear research reactor.

The state-run Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute and Daewoo Engineering and Construction Co. are expected to start building a 5-megawatt reactor Nov. 1 at the Jordan University for Science and Technology near the northern city of Irbid.

A planning ministry statement said Monday the reactor will be fully commissioned within five years and a nuclear power plant will be built by 2017.

Resource-barren Jordan is developing a peaceful nuclear program with U.S. support. But the U.S. has expressed reservations over Jordan's desire to enrich its large reserves of uranium.

Jordan says alternative energy sources are needed to generate electricity and desalinate water.
