U.S. Oil Drilling Activity Cools Off In The Permian

By Julianne Geiger - Mar 10, 2023,

The total number of total active drilling rigs in the United States fell by 3 this week, according to new data from Baker Hughes published on Friday, after falling by 4 last week.

The total rig count fell to 746 this week—83 rigs higher than the rig count this time in 2022 and 329 rigs lower than the rig count at the beginning of 2019, prior to the pandemic.
Oil rigs in the United States decreased by 2 this week, to 590 after decreasing by 8 in the week prior. Gas rigs fell by 1 to 153. Miscellaneous rigs stayed the same.

The rig count in the Permian Basin fell by 6—the biggest single-rig drop since September. Rigs in the Eagle Ford rose by 1.

Primary Vision’s Frac Spread Count, an estimate of the number of crews completing unfinished wells—a more frugal use of finances than drilling new wells—rose during the week ending March 3. The frac spread count is now 276. This is 10 more than a month ago, and 4 fewer than a year ago.

Crude oil production in the United States slipped to 12.2 million bpd for the week ending March 3, according to the latest weekly EIA estimates. U.S. production levels are up 600,000 bpd versus a year ago.

2022-janv.

BP begins production from Argos platform at $9bn Mad Dog 2 project

By NS Energy Staff Writer 14 Apr 2023

Located nearly 306km south of New Orleans, Louisiana, the 27-stories tall platform, which weighs over 60,000 tons, operates in 4,500ft of water and is designed to produce up to 140,000 barrels of oil per day from the deepwater Mad Dog field

BP has commenced production of oil at the Argos floating production platform at the $9bn Mad Dog 2 project in the deepwater US Gulf of Mexico.

Argos has been designed to produce up to 140,000 barrels of oil per day. It is the oil and gas major’s fifth platform in the Gulf of Mexico.

Besides, it is the first new production facility operated by BP in the US Gulf of Mexico since the Thunder Horse platform entered into production in 2008.

According to BP, the semi-submersible unit will eventually boost the company’s gross operated production capacity in the region by an estimated 20%.

BP said that it anticipates ramping up production from the Argos platform safely and systematically through this year.

The Argos floating production platform is equipped with BP’s proprietary LoSal Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and Dynamic Digital Twin technologies.

Its waterflood injection capacity is over 140,000 barrels of low-salinity water per day, which is expected to help improve oil recovery from the Mad Dog field.

BP chief executive Bernard Looney said: “The start-up of Argos is a fantastic achievement that helps deliver our integrated energy strategy – investing in today’s energy system and, at the same time, investing in the energy transition.

“As bp’s most digital facility worldwide, applying our latest technologies, Argos will strengthen our key position in the Gulf of Mexico for years to come.”

Argos is considered by BP as the core of the Mad Dog Phase 2 project, which extends the life of the Mad Dog oil field. Mad Dog was discovered in 1998 and has been in production since 2005 via the Mad Dog production spar.

The 27-floor tall platform, which weighs over 60,000 tons, operates in 4,500ft of water. It is located nearly 306km south of New Orleans, Louisiana.

BP, which has a stake of 60.5% in Mad Dog, is partnered with Woodside Energy (23.9%) and Chevron U.S.A.’s affiliate Union Oil Company of California (15.6%).

U.S. Could Start Buying Oil To Refill SPR As Early As June

By Tsvetana Paraskova - May 12, 2023,

The U.S. Administration could begin crude oil repurchases to fill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as early as in June, after a Congressionally-mandated sale from the SPR is completed next month, U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said on Thursday.

“That congressionally mandated sale of 26 million barrels will be completed by June, and it's at that point where we will flip the switch and then seek to purchase,” Granholm said during a hearing in the U.S. House of Representatives.
In October of last year, the administration announced that it would repurchase crude oil for the reserve when prices were at or below about $67-$72 per barrel. The move would be dual purpose in that not only would it replenish the nation’s depleted reserves, but it would boost demand when prices were low instead of sending them into orbit at a time of regular prices.

Early on Friday, the U.S. benchmark, WTI Crude, was trading at around $70 per barrel and on track for a fourth consecutive weekly loss.

After selling more than 200 million barrels of crude from the SPR last year, the U.S. Administration has left the strategic petroleum reserve at its lowest level since 1983, at 372 million barrels of crude.

Earlier this year, Secretary Granholm had suggested that the Administration would start repurchasing crude oil for filling the SPR in the autumn of this year, and that the refilling could take years.
The Administration has previously said that repurchases could begin in the fourth quarter of this year, after maintenance is completed on two sites storing the nation’s crude oil reserves in Texas and Louisiana.

New Mexico Accounted For 50% Of U.S. Oil Production Growth In 2022

By Tsvetana Paraskova - May 19, 2023

New Mexico, home to part of the Permian basin, saw the highest crude oil production growth of any U.S. state last year, with output gains of 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) accounting for half of America’s oil production increase, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in a report on Thursday.

Total U.S. crude oil production increased by 600,000 bpd in 2022 compared with 2021, averaging 11.9 million bpd, per EIA’s Monthly Crude Oil and Natural Gas Production report.
For the third year in a row, New Mexico’s oil production growth eclipsed the growth of crude output in any other U.S. state, including Texas, the biggest U.S. oil-producing state and also home to part of the Permian shale basin.

Crude oil production in New Mexico jumped by 300,000 bpd to 1.6 million bpd in 2022, a record for the state, the EIA has estimated.

New Mexico and Texas contributed the most growth to U.S. crude oil production in 2022, while oil output in the rest of the United States grew by just 0.6% last year, or by 33,000 bpd.

Crude oil production in California fell for the eighth consecutive year, and production in Alaska declined for the fifth consecutive year. North Dakota, which had been one of the leading states in oil production growth in the past decade, saw oil production fall for the third consecutive year in 2022, the EIA noted.
The administration forecast in its Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) in May that U.S. crude oil production would continue to increase this year and next. Total U.S. crude oil production is set to climb to 12.5 million bpd in 2023 and to 12.7 million bpd in 2024, according to EIA’s most recent estimates.

However, production growth could be lower than expected as the new priorities of the shale patch – capital discipline and a focus on returns to shareholders and debt repayments – have coupled with supply chain constraints and cost inflation to weigh on growth in recent months.
