The Beginning Of The End For The Bakken Shale Play

https://shaleprofile.com/index.php/2017 ... uary-2017/

The “Well quality” tab gives an overview of the production profiles of all these wells, by year in which they started. I have pre-selected the major oil basins in this view. The (Bakken) wells that started in 2007 did on average 169 bo/d in their first full calendar month on production (month 2). In 2016, this has more than tripled, as new wells produced on average more than 520 bo/d in their 2nd calendar month.

This capacity to boost production in the early months of a well has made the total oil & gas production from these unconventional wells far more sensitive to current activity levels. That is probably an important reason why the EIA already sees production increasing in these basins, after the recent ramp-up in drilling and completion. But given that the longer term performance of these newer wells appears to have improved far less, the number of wells needed to maintain a certain production level has, relatively, not changed by much.

Increase In Well Productivity Drives U.S. Production Jump

By Irina Slav - May 02, 2018

New shale oil well productivity drove U.S. production higher in the last few years, with the average daily rate for the first month of operation rising from less than 100 barrels for most shale plays to between 200 and more than 600 barrels, the Energy Information Administration said in a new report.

Image

Last year, the energy authority said, shale oil production came to account for 54 percent of the United States’ overall oil production, in part thanks to this higher new-well productivity. The EIA said this higher productivity was the result of a combination of factors including the wider use of hydraulic fracturing and the drilling of more—and longer—horizontal wells, but most notably the increase in the amounts of frac sand used in new wells.

This combination of factors helped shale drillers to stay afloat and keep production going even during the downturn. In 2015 and 2016 there were fewer new wells drilled, but those that did get drilled were located in more productive areas and were drilled more quickly. Now that the worst is over, they are focusing on the Permian, the EIA noted, which holds more untapped reserves than the rest of the oil patch.

Average full-cycle breakeven costs in the Permian are US$42 per barrel, according to Rystad Energy. This accounts for the costs of the whole process—from drilling a well to starting production from it. If you add to its exploration costs for new locations, the cost comes in at US$48 per barrel—still significantly less than, say, offshore fields, and a lot below current oil prices.

What’s more, a shale oil well makes its money back in one year, compared to six to seven years for offshore projects. No wonder, then, that investors strongly prefer shale and the Permian in particular, and so do drillers.

Energy Transfer Partners Plans 600,000-Bpd Permian Oil Pipeline

By Tsvetana Paraskova - May 10, 2018

Energy Transfer Partners plans to build a 600,000-bpd oil pipeline from the Permian to the Houston Ship Channel and Nederland, Texas, as midstream operators race to add takeaway capacity in the fastest-growing U.S. shale play.

The planned ETP pipeline could be “easily expandable” to 1 million bpd, company executives said on the conference call for the Q1 results on Thursday, adding that the new pipeline would likely come into service in 2020.

Booming Permian oil production has started to constrain takeaway capacity from the region, putting downward pressure on Midland crude oil prices compared to the prices in Houston.

“The almost historical widening of that basis will certainly help our margins in the coming quarters,” Reuters quoted senior ETP executive Marshall McCrea as saying.

Crude oil volumes on ETP’s Permian Express 3 averaged “a couple of hundred thousand” barrels of oil per day in Q1, and the company continues to assess possible further expansion of that pipeline, ETP said on the conference call.

Other operators are also announcing plans or commit to projects to move the growing Permian oil production out of West Texas to the ports.

Enterprise Products Partners announced plans in December to convert one of its natural gas liquids (NGL) pipelines from the Permian to the Texas Gulf Coast to crude oil service. The conversion, expected to be completed in the first half of 2020, would provide the partnership with total crude oil pipeline capacity of over 650,000 bpd from the Permian to Enterprise’s crude oil hub in the Houston area.

VINCENT COLLEN Le 07/05/2018 Les Ecjos

Yes just a overview Scott, as you the IEA and EIA are forecasting total US oil growth this year of the range of 1.3 million to 1.4 million barrels a day. My forecast is about 0.95 and my forecast for 2019 is lower than that. And I think that with that in 2018, 2019 will see a further constriction in global supply and demand even if you exclude the Iranian sanctions situation. So even at the current $70 WTI price level I see a strong possibility of further strengthening in WTI over the next couple of years. So we would intend to remain unhedged. Yes there is certainly a price when we would lay on some WTI hedges, but at this point I wouldn't divulge what that price it would be a fluid situation. But I can tell you that price is not $70.

And as far as the futures curve with the severe backwardation I would say it's laughable that would be my term for it, it's ridiculous. So that's kind of my view on macro and then CDEV's strategy is simply, we would intend to be one of the fastest oil growth entities in the US in what we believe will be a very strong WTI pricing environment over the next multiple years. And the last comment I would make to you is one of the group think items there is out there is short cycle times.

The concept is you have strong oil prices that turns on the shale machine and the shale machine generates a vast amount of oil, which pushes all prices down, i.e., short cycle times and I believe that that group think is 100% wrong, and the concept of short cycle times is incorrect because even if capital gets poured into the shale machine, the shale machine will disappoint in terms of aggregate oil production growth. So I think the industry and the world is going to have to conclude that the short cycle time group think is an incorrect way of looking at global supply and demand over the next multiple years.
source: https://seekingalpha.com/article/417400 ... art=single

Looking at the global oil market, the absence of global stock builds in the first quarter, supported by the OPEC- and Russia-led production cuts, confirm that the oil market is in balance. More importantly, after three consecutive years of dramatic underinvestment in global E&P spending, the worldwide production base has started to show the anticipated signs of weakness with noticeable year-over-year production declines appearing in several countries such as Angola, Norway, Mexico, Malaysia, China, and Indonesia. With Libya and Nigeria producing at near-full capacity, Venezuelan production in free fall, the potential of new sanctions against Iran, and rising geopolitical risks, the only major sources of short-term supply growth to address global production decline and strong worldwide demand are Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Russia, and the US shale oil industry. However, production challenges in US shale are emerging that are linked to infill drilling well-to-well interference, the potential lower production of step-out drilling from Tier 1 acreage, and significant infrastructure constraints. It is, therefore, becoming increasingly likely that the industry will face growing supply challenges over the coming year and a significant increase in global E&P investment will be required to minimize the impending deficit.
Source: https://www.slb.com/news/press_releases ... nings.aspx

BHP said to get shale bids valuing unit up to $9 billion

Bloomberg News | 4 days ago |

BHP Billiton Ltd. has received first-round bids for its U.S. shale portfolio from oil majors including BP Plc and Chevron Corp., valuing the unit at $7 billion to $9 billion, people familiar with the matter said.

Royal Dutch Shell Plc, partnering with private equity firm Blackstone Group LP, also submitted a bid for the entire unit late in May, said the people, asking not to be identified because the information is private. Chevron has teamed up with another private equity firm, while BP is pursuing them alone, the people said.

Multiple parties, including private equity firms such as Apollo Global Management LLC as well as energy companies, have bid separately for individual packages of shale real estate being sold by the Melbourne, Australia-based commodities giant, the people said.

BHP expects to receive about $10 billion or more as bidding for the entire unit proceeds to a second round and as much as $13 billion if it sells the assets piecemeal, the people said. The company prefers to sell the unit to a single party and expects to invite second-round bids as early as July, the people said.

................
BHP disclosed plans to sell its onshore U.S. division last summer after activist investor Elliott Management Corp. said its foray into shale, along with other decisions, had wiped out $40 billion in shareholder value. The company, which spent $20 billion on two U.S. oil and gas acquisitions in 2011, is selling 800,000 net acres in the Eagle Ford, Permian, Haynseville and Fayetteville Basins it’s said to value at $10 billion or more. It’s preparing to sell those assets in as many as seven packages, including three in the highly-prized Permian of West Texas and New Mexico, people familiar with the matter said in April.

........
Coleman told Rigzone that the oil pipeline construction constraints are occurring as project developers compete for limited manpower, machinery and transportation resources needed to develop other oil and gas infrastructure investments in West Texas.

“These projects are also occurring in conjunction with similar gas and natural gas liquids pipelines also under construction which are putting additional strains on construction resources,” Coleman explained. “Couple this with a very tight trucking market in the U.S. and, more importantly, in West Texas and you can see a scenario in which one or multiple pipelines get delayed from various construction constraints.”

PERMIAN BASIN PRODUCTION
The EIA’s Annual Energy Outlook for 2018 forecasts that oil production in the Permian basin will experience the largest growth of all U.S. shale plays, increasing 60% from an average 2.5 MMbpd in 2018 to 4 MMbpd by 2030, Fig. 1. However, recent production in the shale play has far surpassed the predicted 2.5 MMbopd for 2018. According to the EIA’s Drilling Productivity Report, oil production reached 3.333 MMbpd in July, a 56,000-bpd increase over June.
