Manifa Oil: Malodorous, But Really Not That Bad

Conclusion

That Saudi Aramco chose Manifa field as its next big increment still raises questions due to its cost (now at $17 billion) as well as the quality of the oil, even though it is nowhere near as bad as has been reported. Saudi Aramco has made the latter issue somewhat moot by, along with multinational partners, building new refineries (together costing more than the field re-development) to process Manifa oil into more valuable products. In a future article, I will take a closer look at the project itself and possibly speculate further on the why of Manifa.

Chief of oil giant becomes new health minister

RIYADH — The head of oil giant Saudi Aramco was named on Wednesday as Saudi Arabia's health minister as part of a major government reshuffle.

Khalid Al-Falih will be tasked with leading the Kingdom's battle against the deadly MERS virus and supervising hospitals in the country's south where wounded troops have been treated since March in skirmishes along the border with Yemen.

Aramco, the world's largest oil company in terms of crude production and exports, did not immediately announce who would replace Falih.

According to the company's website, Falih was the oil giant's president and CEO since 2009. He has spent his entire career of three decades at Saudi Aramco where he was in charge of 60,000 employees.

He is the fourth health minister to be named in the past year and succeeds Ahmed Al-Khatib, who King Salman appointed in a January Cabinet shuffle.

Saudi Arabia’s oil-and-gas rig counts are hitting record highs.

May 1, 2015

Saudi Arabia has been making some big moves lately, most notably in its leadership reshuffle, but the country also has raised the number of rigs it has actively drilling for oil and natural gas by 30% since March 2014.

James Williams, an energy economist at WTRG Economics, suggests that the Saudis are working toward increasing their oil-production US:CLM5 UK:LCOM5 capacity to gain even more leverage over the oil market than they already have as the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries’ so-called swing producer.

Image
.....
The most recent data from Baker Hughes BHI, -0.93% show that Saudi Arabia had 125 active oil and gas rigs in March of this year, up from 96 the same time a year earlier. The total represents an all-time high, according to Williams, who provided a chart (included below) based on data from Baker Hughes. He said the number of active oil rigs is at a record too.

The rig count has climbed despite the fact that the “world market is still flooded with oil,” Williams said. “This indicates that the Saudis are expanding production capacity,” he noted. That is excess capacity that could be used at any time to “flood the market and crash the [oil] price.”

Saudi Aramco Set To Boost Oil Capacity By 550,000 Bpd In Q4

By Tsvetana Paraskova - Sep 28, 2018

Saudi Arabia’s oil giant Saudi Aramco is expected to pick up an additional 550,000 bpd of oil production capacity from two giant oil fields in the fourth quarter, so it would be able to increase production if there’s demand, Reuters reported on Thursday, quoting a source familiar with the plans.

If Aramco does manage to bring that capacity online, it could give Saudi Arabia another half a million barrels of oil per day of spare capacity at a time when the oil market is expected to tighten with Iranian oil barrels coming off the market with the return of the U.S. sanctions in early November.

According to Reuters’s source, the capacity of the giant Khurais oil field will be expanded by between 250,000 bpd and 300,000 bpd, to reach 1.5 million bpd. Another 300,000 bpd of capacity will come from the Manifa oil field, which has a current capacity of 900,000 bpd, although this field has pumped at a reduced rate in past months because of a pipeline issue that is now said to be resolved.

It’s not clear if the higher capacity at the two fields would translate into a production boost for Saudi Arabia, which will be looking at many market factors in the fourth quarter to decide which way its production will go. These factors include demand for Saudi oil, the extent of the losses from Iran and Venezuela, how much spare capacity to keep untapped, how much of that capacity can quickly turn into production if need be, and of course, oil prices, even if Saudi Arabia says that it’s not aiming for a specific price of oil.

.......

IPTC Awards Saudi Aramco’s Manifa Offshore Project

Trent Jacobs, JPT Digital Editor | 26 March 2019

Saudi Aramco’s unique and ambitious Manifa offshore project is the winner of the 2019 International Petroleum Technology Conference’s (IPTC) Excellence in Project Integration Award. The award was announced at the kickoff of this year’s IPTC which is being held in Beijing, China. It serves as an annual highlight of the conference and is eligible for so-called megaprojects involving more than USD 500 million in capital.

Manifa is found off the northeast coast of Saudi Arabia and represents one of the world’s largest offshore developments. There are six large reservoirs stacked atop each other, with the longest of these being about 25 miles long (40 km).

To develop these reservoirs and achieve a production capacity of about 900,000 B/D, Aramco faced a choice of dredging channels to allow jackup rigs to do the drilling, which would have disrupted the local marine environment.

With this consequence in mind, the national oil company opted for a more complex plan that involved building 27 drilling islands connected by about 25 miles (41 km) of causeways, some which could be removed after the drilling infrastructure was installed.

Saudi Aramco has lauded Manifa as one of the world’s largest engineering projects, noting that the construction phase alone required more than 4 million man-hours to complete. The company also said it has successfully overcome the environmental challenge of extracting oil and gas from a sensitive area where shrimping and fishing represent key components of the local economy.

Subsurface challenges included dealing with a layer of heavy tar that sits above the lighter hydrocarbon targets. With extended-reach drilling and subsurface imaging technologies, engineers were able to strategically place water injection wells above the heavy tar to help maintain reservoir pressure.

Saudi Aramco Reveals New Oil And Gas Discoveries

By Irina Slav - Aug 31, 2020

Saudi Arabia’s state oil company has discovered two new oil and gas fields in the northern part of the country, the Saudi Press Agency reported, citing Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman. The fields’ reserves have yet to be established accurately but they are both already producing gas, condensates, and oil.

One of the fields, Hadabat Al-Hajara, is pumping 16 million cu ft of gas daily, plus 1,944 barrels of condensates, and the other, Abraq at-Tulul, is producing some 3,000 barrels of crude daily as well as 49,000 barrels of condensates daily, and 1.1 million cu ft of gas.

More oil production is hardly what Saudi Arabia—or any other producer—really needs right now but, according to analysts, the two new finds could contribute to its non-oil hydrocarbons production—something the Kingdom is striving for as part of its diversification efforts. A lot of the oil Aramco produces is used locally for power generation and the company—and the government—is trying to reduce this by replacing oil with gas. To do that, gas production needs to increase.

What’s more, switching to gas would free more oil for exports, the thinking in Riyadh went before the pandemic that devastated demand for oil. Saudi Arabia is the seventh-largest natural gas market in the world, according to Aramco, which is the sole supplier of the commodity locally.

Saudi Arabia had some 303 trillion cu ft in natural gas reserves as of 2017, which accounts for 4 percent of the global total and makes the Kingdom the world’s fifth-largest holder of natural gas reserves. According to Worldometers, this amount is enough for 79 years of consumption at current levels, which average 3.614 billion cu ft annually. This makes the twin discovery in the north all the more important for Saudi Arabia’s gas ambitions

Saudi Aramco Restarts Projects To Boost Oil Production Capacity

By Tsvetana Paraskova - Apr 16, 2021

The world’s largest oil company and biggest oil exporter, Saudi Aramco, has resumed tendering and development work on major offshore oil expansion projects that would give Saudi Arabia another 1.15 million barrels per day (bpd) of production capacity by 2024, Argus reported on Friday, citing a contractor with knowledge of one of the projects.

After the oil price and demand collapse last year, to which Saudi Arabia itself contributed by breaking up the OPEC+ pact for a month, Aramco idled offshore rigs and postponed the start of the expansion of several projects.

Offshore drilling contractors Noble Corporation and Shelf Drilling said in June they had been notified by Saudi Aramco that their rigs offshore the Kingdom would be suspended for up to one year.

Now Aramco is moving forward with the postponed start of the development work. The Saudi oil giant has issued tenders for development work at the offshore Zuluf oilfield with a capacity of 825,000 bpd, which is planned to be increased by 600,000 bpd, the contractor told Argus.

The expansion project, initially expected to start up in 2023, is now postponed with a few months and is expected to start operations either late into 2023 or in early 2024, according to Argus.

Work on the expansion of two other offshore oilfields, Marjan and Berri, had already started at the end of March, Argus notes. The 400,000-bpd Marjan field is set to boost its capacity by 300,000 bpd, and the Berri field, currently with a capacity of 300,000 bpd, will see its production capacity rise by 250,000 bpd by 2023.

In July 2019, Saudi Aramco awarded 34 contracts worth a total of US$18 billion to boost the oil production capacity of the two fields by a total of 550,000 bpd to sustain its 12-million-bpd production capacity by the early 2020s and to replace production capacity lost from aging oilfields.
