Qatar's RasGas 6 to produce LNG within weeks
Mon Jul 13, 2009

DUBAI, July 13 (Reuters) -Qatar and Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) expect to begin producing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from a new facility in Qatar within weeks, a spokesperson at LNG producer RasGas said on Monday.

Qatar is already the world's largest LNG exporter, and expects to double annual capacity this year to 62 million tonnes through the start up of four huge new LNG production facilities. "We anticipate the first production of LNG to occur within the next few weeks," the spokesperson said in a statement e-mailed to Reuters. "The commissioning of train 6 is progressing normally."

LNG is gas super-chilled to liquid form for export in specially designed tankers. The gas is processed and chilled at facilities known as trains.

The new train is RasGas' sixth. The design capacity of the train is 7.8 million tonnes per year. The company expects to start train 7 in late 2009. Both trains six and seven were expected to export LNG to Asia and the United States.

State-run Qatar Petroleum owns 70 percent of RasGas train 6, while Exxon Mobil owns the remaining 30 percent.

Qatar has two LNG producers, RasGas and Qatargas. Both are majority owned by Qatar Petroleum.

Qatargas said last month it expected first LNG from its train 5, also with annual production capacity of 7.8 million tonnes, within weeks. [ID:nLT340733]

The company started its train 4 in April, again with capacity of 7.8 million tonnes. The trains are the largest in the world.

Qatari field to pump gas for next 100 years

August 24, 2009

Qatar's mammoth North Field that houses the world's largest gas reservoir will likely continue spewing gas and feed the country's coffers for more than 100 years despite a sharp rise in its LNG output, official data showed.

A rapid rise in liquefied natural gas production will combine with supplies to other Qatari projects and neighbouring UAE and Oman to boost the country's total gas output to a record 23 billion cubic feet per day in 2014 to become one of the largest natural gas producers in the world.

At that output, Qatar's annual production of natural gas will be 8.39 trillion cubic feet, all of which will come from the North Field.

Official estimates put the Field's proven gas resources at more than 900 trillion cubic feet at the start of 2009, which means that it could last for 107 years at present reserves and the 2014 production level.

Qatar is already the world's largest LNG exporter, pumping nearly 30 million tonnes in 2008. The level could surpass 50 million tonnes this year and swell to the targeted capacity of 77 million tonnes by 2012.

"Producing 77 million tonnes of LNG per year will need producing 6.13 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day," said Saad Al Kaabi, Director of Oil and Gas projects at the government-owned Qatar Petroleum (QP).

"If gas supplies to other projects in Qatar and to the Dolphin project, which supplies gas to the UAE and Oman, are added to the LNG projects, then Qatar's total production of natural gas will reach about 23 billion cubic feet per day by 2014, when all of its gas projects are completed."

Qatar launched LNG projects in early 1990s to tap its North Field, which straddles about 6,000 square kilometres of Qatari and Iranian water in the Gulf and is believed to be the world's largest single reservoir of non-associated gas, with estimated reserves of around 902 trillion cubic feet.

QP has approved a staggering QR222.7 billion (Dh224.6bn) for its oil and gas development scheme during 2008-2012 to bring to the total capital pumped into the North Field and other hydrocarbon projects to more than QR500bn.

Around QR104bn will be pumped into refining and gas-to-liquids (GTL) projects while the natural gas sector will receive QR63bn. Allocations included QR25bn for industries, QR19.7bn for crude oil and around QR11bn for petrochemicals.

The North Field was discovered in 1971. Its gas reserves are equivalent to nearly 162 billion barrels of oil, accounting for nearly 14 per cent of the world's total extractable crude resources. At that level, Qatar controls the world's largest proven gas wealth after Russia and Iran.

Industry sources said LNG exports fetched Qatar in excess of $10bn (Dh36.7bn) in 2008 and revenue could exceed $27bn in 2012.

http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/a ... rent_id=28

Qatar set for huge leap in LNG output and export

................
Qatar is now the world’s largest exporter and trans-shipper of LNG. Currently, 10 LNG trains are in operation – five each at RasGas and Qatargas. They account for 45mn tonnes per year.

Qatargas customers are mainly Japan’s Chubu Electric and Spain’s Gas Natural. RasGas’ major customers are in South Korea and India among other countries.

Qatar is also making huge investments in LNG transportation to deliver its liquefied natural gas worldwide.

At the peak of activities, Qatar’s massive LNG fleet will consist of some 56 vessels, the largest of which is Q-Max, which can deliver up to 265,000 cubic metres of LNG.

Some 27 large LNG carriers comprising both Q-Max and Q-Flex are expected to be delivered to Qatar this year.

Q-Flex and the even larger Q-Max are a new generation of LNG mega ships with about 40% lower energy requirements and carbon emissions than conventional vessels due to the economies of scale created by their size and the efficiency of the engines.

South Korea’s three major shipbuilders – Hyundai, Samsung and Daewoo – have taken up the mammoth Qatari order worth $16bn to construct 54 ships for the country.

QATAR'S RAS LAFFAN 3 ANNOUNCES STARTUP OF 7.8 MIL MT LNG TRAIN 7

Dubai (Platts)--24Feb2010

The Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company Limited (RasGas), a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil, announced Wednesday the completion and start-up of the 7.8 million mt/year Train 7 at its Ras Laffan 3 LNG plant in Qatar.

"Initiating LNG production from Ras Laffan 3 Train 7 marks another major milestone in the unprecedented effort between Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil to design and effectively implement the largest liquefaction trains, LNG vessels and terminals in the world," a joint statement said.

Qatar Petroleum holds 70% in the joint venture and ExxonMobil 30%.

Train 7 is the fourth 7.8 million mt/year LNG train--the world's largest--to be brought online by Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil joint ventures within the past 12 months. It matches the capacity of Ras Laffan 3 Train 6, one of the largest operating LNG production facilities in the world, inaugurated in October 2009.

"These mega facilities have sufficient scale to competitively reach markets around the globe. Qatar's giant North Field, which is estimated to contain in excess of 900 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, will supply both trains," it said.

"The final key component of the value chain is the Golden Pass LNG terminal, under construction near Sabine Pass, Texas, capable of re-gasifying 15.6 million tons per year of LNG. The joint venture consists of affiliates of Qatar Petroleum (70%), ExxonMobil (17.6%) and ConocoPhillips (12.4%) and is expected to start up this year.

Before the inauguration of its latest mega-train, Qatar had said its current LNG production capacity from the RasGas and Qatargas LNG projects was 54 million mt/year. The OPEC oil producing state expects to raise its LNG production capacity to 77 million mt/year before the end of the year with the additional of two more LNG trains.

The emirate has imposed a moratorium on further development of its North Field and has said there would be no further grassroots projects until a reservoir is completed and its results assessed.

Shell, China's CNPC sign Qatar gas deal

DOHA, May 16 (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell , China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) and Qatar Petroleum (QP) signed a 30-year deal on Sunday for gas exploration and production in Qatar, the holder of the world's third-largest gas reserves.
Officials signed the agreement under which Shell, as operator, will hold a 75 percent equity stake, with CNPC holding the remainder.

The 30-year deal, which includes a five-year exploration period, covers onshore and offshore exploration for natural gas and its production in Qatar Block D, which covers an area of more than 8,000 square kilometers close to the industrial city of Ras Laffan, a statement said.
Qatar has the world's third-largest gas reserves and aims to start producing around 5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2014, up from current output of 2.7 million boepd.
Qatar's Oil Minister Abdullah al-Attiyah, speaking during Sunday's signing, said Qatar was in talks over the supply of 7 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas to China and four million tonnes of LNG to India, in addition to earlier agreements.

QP said on Thursday it agreed to supply UNIPEC, a wholly owned affiliate of China's Sinopec Corp , Qatar Marine Crude Oil (QMCO) and Al-Shaheen (ALS) for one year, starting in July.
Attiyah said the latter agreement was for the supply of 30,000 barrels per day of crude oil.
The supply agreement is an addition to an existing contract between the two parties for supplying Qatar Marine and Qatar Land crude oils, QP said.

Qatar to Celebrates Achieving 77 Million Tonnes of Liquefied Natural Gas / year

Qatar (Doha) - As Qatar's production capacity of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) will soon reach 77 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman of Qatar Petroleum (QP) Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah has announced the formation of a task team composed of a group of companies and departments to take on the task of highlighting this historic event as an achievement of the State of Qatar.

With the sixth and seventh production lines of Qatargas expected to begin production in the very near future, Qatar will prove that its LNG production capacity reaches 77 mtpa, Al Attiyah said, adding that this means achieving the vision of the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

This achievement also represents a landmark event for Qatar, where it will ensure its reputation of being the center of energy in the world and the largest producer of LNG in the world, he added.
