Central Asian Gas Pipeline Reaches Milestone

One billion cubic meters of gas have been delivered to China from Central Asia via the new Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan-China pipeline, Xinhua news has reported citing the North-West China immigration and controls office.

As of the morning of 27 April, the China-Central Asia pipeline had pumped a total of one billion cubic meters of natural gas. Daily deliveries exceed 7.5 million cubic meters, the report said. The natural gas imported from Central Asia meets Chinese state quality requirements.

Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan-China pipeline, which was launched in December 2009, begins near the Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan border and crosses central Uzbekistan and the southern part of Kazakhstan on its way to the Chinese border town of Horgos. There, the pipeline joins the second line of the West-East pipeline. The pipeline is 1,833 kilometers long.

BEIJING, June 10 (Reuters) - China's state oil firm CNPC has signed a framework agreement to buy 10 billion cubic metres of natural gas a year from Uzbekistan's national oil company Uzbekneftegaz, Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday, citing a statement from the Chinese firm.
The two firms will first work to connect the Uzbek gas transmission system to the China-Uzbekistan pipeline, it said.
The pipeline is part of a 1,833-kilometer China-Central Asia gas pipeline that opened in December 2009, linking gas fields in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan to Xinjiang in northwest China.

Shanghai. June 9. INTERFAX-CHINA - Annual domestic natural gas consumption will hit 300 billion cubic meters by 2020, state media reported a top executive with PetroChina Co. Ltd., the listed arm of China's largest oil and gas producer China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), as saying on June 9.
Zhou Jiping, PetroChina's general manager, said that natural gas consumption will account for 10 percent of total domestic primary energy consumption by 2020, up from 3.9 percent in 2010, according to a Xinhua News Agency report.

PetroChina has discovered new proven gas reserves in excess of 400 billion cubic meters over the past three years, Zhou said.
The company produced 68.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2009, accounting for over 80 percent of total domestic production.

In the first four months of 2010, China produced 31.89 billion cubic meters of natural gas, up 13.1 percent year-on-year and imported 4.51 billion cubic meters of natural gas during the same period, up 206.1 percent year-on-year.

Chinese natural gas imports up by 86pct

National Business Daily quoted an insider from the National Energy Administration said the National Development and Reform Commission is working on the pricing mechanism for gas delivered by the second line of the West-East natural gas transmission project.

According to china5e.com, natural gas imports rose 86.5%YoY to 25 billion cubic meters during the first 10 months, with imports doubling in October to 3.1 billion cubic meters.

Analysts regard domestic natural gases to be under priced and forecast a surge in imports due largely to the imbalance between demand and supply.

According to a member of the China Petroleum and Petrochemical Engineering Institute, the price of natural gas imports from Central Asia is much higher than the domestic selling price of natural gas.

Sixteen cities along the second line of the West-East natural gas transmission pipeline are currently served by natural gas imported from Central Asia.

China's Sinopec boosts Australian LNG stake

(AFP) – 7 hours ago

SYDNEY — China's Sinopec raised its stake in a major Australian-US liquefied natural gas (LNG) project and almost doubled its sales contract Monday as Beijing scrambles to secure energy supplies.

Australia Pacific LNG (APLNG), a Aus$35 billion (US$35.5 billion) joint venture between Australia's Origin Energy and US firm ConocoPhillips, said Sinopec had bumped up its share in the project from 15 to 25 percent.

It had also agreed to purchase an additional 3.3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG over 20 years from 2015, taking its total commitment to 7.6 mtpa.

The Sinopec contract is among Australia's biggest-ever LNG deals and the Chinese company's chairman Fu Chengyu said its extension would "further assist China and Sinopec to meet its growing energy demands".

China's government and Australia's foreign investments watchdog will have to approve the new agreement before it is binding, and the project will also have to reach a final investment decision on the next stage of development.

Japan's Kansai Electric is the project's other major client and has agreed to take 1.0 mtpa for 20 years from 2016.

APLNG, in northern Queensland state, is the largest such project planned in Australia using pioneering coal seam technology to cool and liquefy underground gases that burn cleaner than coal and other fuels and are relatively easy to ship.

It is banking on increased demand for green energy, particularly from Asia, as the world moves to meet pollution reduction targets.

The venture said earlier this year that interest in LNG had also been boosted by the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan which sparked a nuclear crisis.

Chinese demand for gas is forecast to jump 5.9 percent every year until 2035, compared with OECD growth of 0.5 percent, taking the Asian giant's share of global gas consumption from 2.7 percent in 2008 to 8.7 percent by 2035.

China commissions world's longest gas pipeline

Dec 31, 2012

Beijing: China's west to east gas pipeline, which is the world's longest line, turned fully operational as its last section opened Sunday, the country's largest oil and gas producer announced.

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) said the 8,704-km pipeline will carry natural gas from central Asia to as far as Shanghai in east China and Guangzhou and Hong Kong in south China, Xinhua reported.

The pipeline worth 142 billion-yuan (over $22 billion) traverses 15 provincial regions and will benefit about 500 million people, according to the CNPC.

The pipeline's annual natural gas transportation capacity is 30 billion cubic metres. It runs from Huoerguosi, located on the China-Kazakhstan border in northwest Xinjiang Uygur region, to Hong Kong.

Sinopec Field Could Reignite China Shale Hopes

BEIJING, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Chinese oil giant Sinopec Corp is for the first time pumping shale gas from test wells in commercial quantities in what it hopes will be a breakthrough in the development of a badly needed new energy source.

..........
''The high yield in the Fuling area proves more evidence that the Sichuan basin is promising in terms of shale gas development and lays the foundation for commercial production in the area," said a Sinopec Jianghan official with direct knowledge of the Fuling drilling, adding that another 50 or so wells are planned for commercial development in 2014. He declined to be named as he is not authorised to speak with media.

Sinopec has drilled nearly 30 pilot shale gas wells in the Fuling area of Chongqing municipality in southwest China, part of the Sichuan basin - one of the most promising geological zones for the unconventional fuel.

Six of the wells are pumping a daily combined rate of 1.06 million cubic metres of gas, according to state media and the Sinopec official, or an average of nearly 180,000 cubic metres per well.

China imports more natural gas in 2013

2014-02-04 Xinhua

China saw its aggregate volume of natural gas imported from overseas jump 25 percent year on year in 2013, approaching one-third of its apparent consumption, a new report has showed.

The country imported 53 billion cubic meters of natural gas last year, 31.6 percent of its domestic gas output plus imported volume, according to a report released by an economic and technological academy under China National Petroleum Corporation, the country's state-owned oil giant.

In 2013, local authorities more strongly promoted the use of natural gas to reduce dependency on coal, prompted by the needs for environmental protection and economic advances.

The drive contributed to the country's surging imports of natural gas, noted the report.

Despite the increased imports, it said, "there would have been a supply-demand gap of 22 billion cubic meters in 2013 in the case that all the needs for natural gas were satisfied."

China's natural gas consumption increased 13.9 percent year on year in 2013. The total consumption accounted for 5.9 percent of consumed primary energy resources, up from 5.4 percent in 2012, making China the world's third-largest gas user.

The report estimated that China's total domestic gas production and imported volume increased 11 percent year on year to 186 billion cubic meters in 2014, and put the estimated proportion taken up by natural gas in primary energy consumption at 6.3 percent.

The figure indicated a more tightened balance between supply and demand and increasing seasonal scarcity of natural gas in the year.

The Chinese central government initiated a nationwide reform of the natural gas pricing mechanism in July, 2013, hoping to bring it gradually into line with the market situation.

CNPC: PetroChina Makes Huge Gas Find in Sichuan Basin

February 10, 2014 Rigzone News

PetroChina, Asia's largest oil and gas producer, has found 308.2 billion cubic metres of technically recoverable gas in southwest China's Sichuan basin, according to parent CNPC, one of China's largest gas discoveries in more than a decade.

China, the top energy user and fourth-largest consumer of gas, is racing to increase supply of the cleaner-burning fuel by boosting domestic exploration and raising imports, as demand is forecast to nearly quadruple between 2011 and 2030.

The Moxi block of An'yue field was officially certified to hold 440.4 bcm of proven geological reserves, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) said in Monday report on its website (news.cnpc.com.cn), citing PetroChina's Exploration and Development department.

PetroChina is now building a production facility able to pump 4 bcm a year under phase-1 development, which is to be followed by another 6 bcm/year in a second phase, CNPC said.

CNPC gave no timeline for the development and did not say how much it would cost. CNPC and PetroChina officials were not immediately available for comment.
