U.S. number one in the world in wind energy production

March 1, 2016 evwind

The United States continues to lead the world in wind energy production according to recently released data by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Over 31 percent of Iowa’s in-state electricity generation came from wind last year – marking another major milestone. This is the first time wind has supplied a state with more than 30 percent of its annual electricity. Iowa, Kansas and South Dakota all generated more than 20 percent of their electricity from wind in 2015.

.............

Wind produced over 190 million megawatt-hours (MWh) in the U.S. last year, enough electricity for about 17.5 million typical U.S. homes. China is close behind the U.S. at 185.1 million MWh and followed by third-place Germany at 84.6 MWh. Although China has nearly double the installed wind power capacity as the U.S., strong wind resources and production-based U.S. policy have helped build some of the most productive wind farms in the world.
.....................

The U.S. now has nearly 75 gigawatts (GW) of installed wind power capacity. Last year, wind installed 8.6 GW of new electric generating capacity, making it the largest source of new capacity ahead of solar (7.3 GW) and natural gas (6 GW). An additional 9.4 GW of wind power was under construction at the start of 2016, with another 4.9 GW in advanced stages of development.

New customers become a real trend

Last year, 52 percent of the wind power capacity contracted through power purchase agreements (PPAs) was signed by non-utility buyers, more than twice the amount in 2014 and a record high by a considerable amount. New customers included Fortune 500 companies, major American cities and universities

Image
.....................

Because wind power uses no fuel, it protects customers from conventional fuel price fluctuations. When a company signs a wind energy PPA, it knows exactly how much its electricity will cost in five, 10 or 15 years. That predictability is appealing because it facilitates and adds accuracy to long-term planning.

Think of wind power acting as a fixed rate mortgage and conventional fuels acting as an adjustable rate one.

American Wind Energy Association is expecting 10% wind power by 2020

May 30, 2016 evwind

Wind energy is growing faster than any other type of energy generation in the USA. The American Wind Energy Association (link is external) (AWEA) is clearly proud of the results achieved over the last five years: There was an installed capacity of almost 74 GW at the end of 2015. This is more than twice as much as there was five years ago.

..............
According to CEO Tom Kiernan, AWEA is looking to continue this success story by installing eight gigawatts per year through 2020. The goal is to cover 10% of the electricity demand in the USA by then, and according to Steve Berberich, President and CEO of California Independent System Operator (CAISO), that goal will be well within reach.

According to AEWA, the wind industry in the US currently employs more than 88,000 people. More than 128 billion US dollars have been invested in wind energy over the last ten years. Texas is currently in the lead with 17 GW of installed capacity, followed by Iowa (6.4 GW) and California (5.6 GW).

Wind power blows away records in the Midwest and Texas

November 19, 2016 evwind

As strong and consistent breeze has descended down upon Texas and the Plains states. Yesterday, these gusts helped wind power break energy generation records on Texas’s main grid, ERCOT, and the grid across the Plains states, the Southwest Power Pool (SPP). These achievements resume a record-setting trend we last saw back in April.

The primary Texas grid operator, ERCOT, set an instantaneous peak wind output of 14,122 megawatts (MW), up from its previous high of 14,023 MW in February. This is not only a record for ERCOT, but also a new U.S. record for wind for a single system operator.
