Masdar says all wind turbines built at London wind energy project

15 Dec 2012

The final turbine has been installed at a massive offshore wind farm in the UK, in which Abu Dhabi’s Masdar has a 20 percent stake.

London Array announced that the 175th and last turbine at the first 630MW phase of the London Array Offshore Wind Farm has been built, marking the end of major construction activities.

Turbine installation began in January and has been completed by MPI Discovery, A2SEA’s Sea Worker and Sea Jack.

With all turbines in place and 55 connected and supplying power to the national grid, the wind farm is on track to be fully operational in Spring 2013, a statement said.

The wind farm has been generating energy since October when the first turbine began producing power.

Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar, said: “This milestone brings us a step closer to showcasing the economic, social and environmental benefits of clean energy.

“London Array is a testament to how collaboration, the right policies and a commitment to sustainability can advance the new energy industry. Masdar is a proud partner, and we look forward to the completion of the world’s largest offshore wind farm.”

London Array is being built around 20km off the coasts of Kent and Essex.

The wind farm will be installed on a 245 sq km site and will be built in two phases. Phase One covers an area of 90 sq km and includes 175 turbines with a combined capacity of 630MW. If approved, the second phase will add enough capacity to bring the total to 870MW.

The project consortium partners have the following shareholdings – DONG Energy owns 50 percent, E.ON has 30 percent and Masdar has a 20 percent stake.

London Array is now focusing on the commissioning and testing of the remaining turbines before the project is handed over to the operations and maintenance team in 2013.

Benj Sykes, head of DONG Energy’s UK Wind business, said: “The London Array will soon be the largest operational offshore wind farm in the world – building offshore wind farms of this size and larger in the future allows us to harvest the advantages of scale and is an important element of our strategy to drive down the cost of energy.”

Masdar is Abu Dhabi’s multi-faceted initiative advancing the development, commercialisation and deployment of renewable and alternative energy technologies and solutions.

Masdar entered into the London Array scheme when it purchased 40 percent of E.ON’s half share of the scheme, giving Masdar a 20 percent stake in the project overall.

The London Array investment is part of Masdar’s global alternative energy strategy which includes solar, wind and other renewable technologies.

The world’s largest offshore wind farm The London Array is now fully operational

09/04/2013

The world’s largest offshore wind farm The London Array is now fully operational as the last of its 175 wind turbines comes online.

The London Array wind power project, jointly owned by Dong Energy, Masdar and EON, said that the first phase of the project in the Thames estuary has now been completed.

The installation is now exporting enough energy to power 500,000 homes via an onshore station at Graveney, near Faversham.

The windfarm is set to generate 630MW which will result in an estimated cut in CO2 emissions of more than 900,000 tonnes a year. A proposed second phase could boost total capacity to 870MW.

“This is the final major milestone of the construction phase and the culmination of more than two years’ offshore construction work which began in March 2011 with the installation of the first foundation,” said London Array project director Richard Rigg.

World’s largest offshore wind farm with 175 Siemens wind turbines inaugurated

Today marks the inauguration of the world’s largest offshore wind power plant, London Array. Siemens supplied the 175 wind turbines and the grid connection for London Array. Together with Dong Energy, Siemens will also be responsible for the service of the wind turbines through a long-term agreement. The wind power plant owned, developed and built by a consortium consisting of Dong Energy, E.ON and Masdar has a total capacity of 630 megawatts (MW) and will generate enough power to supply 500,000 British households with clean electricity. London Array will reduce annual CO2 emissions by approximately 900,000 tons, which equals the emissions of 300,000 passenger cars.

Image

................

The London Array offshore wind farm is located in the Thames estuary, approximately 20 kilometers off the Kent and Essex coast. Siemens supplied and installed the 175 wind turbines, each with a rotor diameter of 120 meters and a rating of 3.6 MW. In addition, the company supplied the grid connection with one onshore and two offshore substations in the North Sea. The electricity generated by the wind turbines is bundled at sea and transported via high-voltage submarine cables to the coast. The wind farm will be operated and maintained from a purpose-built base at Ramsgate Port.

140 turbines Siemens.

Doublement de ce parc prévu en 2017.
Britain opens world's second-largest offshore wind farm

Reuters 14 hours

The world's second-largest offshore wind farm, capable of generating enough electricity to power over half a million homes, was opened officially off England's east coast on Wednesday.

Energy and Business Minister Michael Fallon opened the 500 megawatt Greater Gabbard wind farm off the Suffolk coast, a £1.3 billion ($A2.2 billion) project that is a 50-50 joint venture between SSE Plc and RWE Innogy.

Britain is banking on offshore wind technology to help it reach legally binding targets to cut carbon dioxide emissions. It aims to develop 18 gigawatts of power from wind by 2020. The addition of Greater Gabbard pushes the total so far to about 3.6 GW, according to RenewableUK.

Greater Gabbard has 140 turbines, which were manufactured by Siemens, and it is expected to double in size when an extension, called Galloper, is completed in 2017.

It was launched just a month after Prime Minister David Cameron opened the world's largest wind farm, the 630 MW London Array project, also off the south-east coast.

7 MW.

Construction of Uk’s largest wind turbine completed in Fife

22/10/2013 Evwind

The world’s largest and most powerful offshore wind turbine is now standing at Energy Park Fife.

The Samsung Heavy Industries prototype offshore turbine is due to become operational later this year.

The structure is situated 50 metres offshore in the Firth of Forth and the tip of its blades stretch 196 metres above the sea.

The nacelle, which contains all generating components for the turbine, was installed on Friday, October 11, and that was followed by the attachment of the three massive blades.

SHI is one of the world’s growing suppliers of onshore wind farm turbine technology and this is its first European offshore wind project.

The Korean company has invested £70million in the Fife wind turbine demonstrator scheme, which has the potential to create up to 500 jobs in Scotland.

The project has the backing of First Minister Alex Salmond, whose Government wants all Scotland’s electricity to come from renewables by 2020.

The 7MW Fife turbine will deliver enough electricity to power 4,800 homes.

SHI said that, following a successful testing period, it will work to attract orders for its turbines. This would allow it to build a world-class manufacturing facility at Energy Park Fife.

...................
Britain gets more electricity from offshore wind farms than all other countries combined. In 2012 it added nearly five times more offshore capacity than Belgium, the next keenest nation, and ten times more than Germany. Its waters already contain more than 1,000 turbines, and the government thinks capacity could triple in six years. Boosters think Britain a global pioneer. Critics say ministers are flogging a costly boondoggle.
