RWE begins construction of its offshore wind farm Sofia on Dogger Bank

June 11, 2021 evwind

RWE, one of the world’s leading players in offshore wind, has begun construction of its flagship 1.4 gigawatts Sofia Offshore Wind Farm project, the largest project currently in construction across its entire renewables fleet.

Achievement of the construction milestone is a pivotal moment for the project, after The Crown Estate in 2010 awarded the rights to develop offshore wind energy on Dogger Bank to a consortium of four leading energy companies, including RWE, as part of its Round 3 Leasing Round.

The project has since passed a number of milestones in preparation for construction, achieving a Development Consent Order from the Secretary of State in 2015, and submitting a winning bid to the UK Government’s fourth Contract for Difference auction in 2019, with the lowest ever strike price of £39.65 per megawatt hour (in 2012 prices). Finally, in March this year (2021), RWE took the Financial Investment Decision project, which represents a total investment of approximately £3 billion.

The official construction will start with onshore activities, which are also known as enabling works. UK firm Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has been contracted to carry out the work. These works take place at the site of the new high-voltage direct current converter station, located near the village of Lazenby in Teesside, and which will be constructed by GE’s Grid Solutions, starting in early 2022.

Initial work on the 7 kilometre onshore cable route will start at around the same time, with the contractor for that package due to be announced later this year. RWE has contracted Prysmian to supply and install the onshore export cable from a point between Redcar and Marske-by-the-Sea to the new converter station, before connecting to the existing National Grid substation in Lackenby, Teesside.

Sofia is a 1.4 gigawatts (GW) offshore wind farm located on Dogger Bank, 195 km from the nearest point on the UK’s North East coast. Consisting of a total of 100 turbines, the wind farm is the largest and furthest offshore for RWE, and will provide invaluable experience for the company which is also developing two new adjacent sites, also located on Dogger Bank.

Offshore installation is expected to begin in 2023, with final project completion expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. Sofia will be the first project in the world to install Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy’s brand new 14 MW wind turbine, the most advanced offshore wind turbine technology available.

TotalEnergies s'associe pour répondre à l'appel d'offres écossais pour l'éolien offshore

REUTERS•16/06/2021

A suivre.

Floating wind farm in Scotland
The fifth and final floating wind turbine is now connected to its moorings at the Kincardine wind farm off the coast of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Connector technology company First Subsea said the last Vestas V174 9.5 megawatt (MW) wind turbine was connected this past weekend. First Subsea will help with the connection of the cable protection system for the dynamic cables later this summer.

Once it’s live, the 50 MW Kincardine project, which was developed by the Madrid-headquartered Cobra Group, will be the world’s largest floating offshore wind farm, with six turbines about nine miles (14 km) off the coast. It consists of a 2 MW Vestas turbine, which has been operating since October 2018, and five 9.5 MW Vestas turbines. Kincardine will generate up to 218 GWh of power annually, which will be enough to power around 55,000 households in Scotland.

Jan De Nul will build the largest wind power plant
July 12, 2021 evwind

Jan De Nul also won the third and final contract to install wind turbines on Britain’s Dogger Bank wind farm. With 277 wind turbines, it will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world.

The wind farm will be located in the North Sea, off the northeastern coast of England. With a capacity of 3.6 gigawatts, it will be able to power more than 6 million British homes. Energy production is the world’s largest for an offshore wind farm.

The wind farm will be established in three phases. Jan de Nul has already won the contracts for the first two stages (95 wind turbines each), and the East Flemish Group has also won the contract for the third stage, it announced Monday. The third stage is good for the transportation and installation of 87 other wind turbines. However, its construction has not yet been completed: we have to wait for the final investment decision at the end of this year.

Jan De Nul previously announced that he would use Voltaire on the project, a vessel with a lifting capacity of more than 3,000 tons still under construction.
The installation of the first offshore wind turbines is scheduled for 2022. The first phase of the wind farm is scheduled to start in 2023. The installation of the turbines for the third stage is currently scheduled to begin in 2025.

Jan De Nul agreed with clients that the value of the deal would not be revealed this time either, says group spokeswoman Helen Schlink. You mentioned “a very big contract”. Not just because of the number of turbines, but also because of their capacity: The wind turbines at Dogger Bank Wind Farm will generate 13 megawatts and phase C will generate up to 14 megawatts.
https://www.evwind.es/2021/07/12/jan-de ... lant/81710
Dogger Bank Wind Farm and Jan De Nul Group have signed the final contract for the transport and installation of 87 GE Haliade-X 14 MW offshore wind turbines. Dogger Bank C at up to 200 km off the Yorkshire coast is the third Dogger Bank Wind Farm package awarded to Jan De Nul. Following the signature of packages A and B, this will bring the total WTGs to be installed to an impressive 277 units.

For the delivery and installation of the 14 MW turbines, Jan De Nul Group will mobilise its newest jack-up installation vessel Voltaire, turning this project into Voltaire's first assignment.

Jan De Nul's Voltaire is currently under construction. It will have a lifting capacity of over 3,000 tonnes and will enter into service in 2022. It is to be fitted with a highly advanced exhaust filtering system by means of a Selective Catalytic Reduction system and a Diesel Particulate Filter, making it the very first seagoing installation vessel of its kind to be an Ultra-Low Emission vessel (ULEv), moreover Stage V-certified.

ABS classes record-capacity floating wind farm offshore Scotland
Installation has finished on the 48-MW Kincardine floating offshore wind farm.

Aug 24th, 2021

Image

Installation has finished on the 48-MW Kincardine floating offshore wind farm, 15 km (9.3 mi) offshore eastern Scotland.

The complex, in water depths of 60-80 m (197-262 ft), is said to be the world’s largest floating offshore wind parks and has been classed by ABS.

It is designed to generate up to 218GWh/yr of electricity, sufficient to power around 55,000 households in Scotland.

ABS’s services included verifying full compliance with its Guide for Building and Classing Floating Offshore Wind Turbines, and covered all phases of the project including design, fabrication, transport and service inspections.

Each of the five floating turbines is also flagged with the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). ABS worked closely with the RMI to determine suitable IMO requirements and undertook reviews as the RMI’s recognized organization. Pilot Offshore Renewables subsidiary Kincardine Offshore Wind developed the complex. ACS Group subsidiary Cobra Wind was responsible for the engineering design, supply, construction, and commissioning of the floating wind farm.

UK National Grid in talks to build a wind energy island in the North Sea

October 8, 2021 evwind

UK company National Grid has revealed it is in talks with two other parties about building an “energy island” in the North Sea that would use wind farms to supply clean electricity to millions of homes in north-west Europe.

The idea of a renewable energy hub in the North Sea has been floated for years, but has yet to progress from studies to reality. The concept envisages offshore wind farms that have a much larger capacity than those in use today, with sub-sea electricity cables taking the energy to whichever country needs it most.

Triton Knoll installs its final wind turbine

September 17, 2021 evwind

Wind power project remains on schedule to complete wind turbine commissioning in 2021 and final project completion in 2022.
Each of the 90 state-of-the-art wind turbines can power a typical home in the UK for 29 hours with just one rotation.

Triton Knoll, the most powerful offshore wind farm being constructed by RWE, has installed its final turbine, marking a significant stage in the project’s construction. The last of the state-of-the-art Vestas 9.5 megawatts (MW) turbines was erected earlier today, ensuring the project remains on track to complete turbine commissioning in 2021 and achieve final project completion in 2022.

Triton Knoll is jointly owned by RWE (59%), J-Power (25%) and Kansai Electric Power (16%), with RWE leading both the wind farm’s construction and the long-term operation and maintenance works on behalf of the project partners. Once fully operational, Triton Knoll will be capable of generating enough green electricity for the equivalent demand of over 800,000 UK homes.

Turbine installation commenced in January 2021 and has been completed on schedule despite the many challenges posed by the Coronavirus pandemic. The 90 Vestas 9.5 MW wind turbines were installed by Vestas and DEME using the jack-up “Wind Osprey” provided by Cadeler.

‘World’s biggest offshore wind farm’ produces first power, passing key milestone

PUBLISHED TUE, DEC 21 2021

According to Orsted, Hornsea 2 will assume the title of “world’s largest operating offshore wind farm” once fully operational in 2022.

The Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm has produced its first power, Danish energy firm Orsted has said, with the announcement representing a significant milestone in the facility’s development.

Situated in waters around 89 kilometers off the U.K.’s east coast, the scale of Hornsea 2 is considerable. Spread across an area of 462 km², it will use 165 turbines from Siemens Gamesa and boast a capacity of more than 1.3 gigawatts. The company says it will power “well over” 1.3 million homes when finished.

The project generated its first power late on Saturday night. According to Orsted, Hornsea 2 will assume the title of “world’s largest operating offshore wind farm” once fully operational in 2022. The firm has also described Hornsea 2 as the “world’s biggest offshore wind farm.”

That accolade, the company says, is currently held by Hornsea 1, the “sibling project” of Hornsea 2. “Together, the two projects will be capable of providing enough power for well over 2.3 million homes,” Orsted said on Monday.

In a statement issued alongside the company’s announcement, Patrick Harnett, senior programme director for Hornsea 2, said: “From here, we have the finishing line in sight as we install the remaining turbines and continue testing, commissioning, and energising our wind farm into the new year.”

Offshore wind: TotalEnergies, Green Investment Group and RIDG secure ScotWind leasing rights to develop a 2 GW windfarm in Scotland

Paris and Aberdeen, 17th January 2022

The joint venture between TotalEnergies (38.25%), Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG) (46.75%) and RIDG (15%), a scottish developer in offshore wind, successfully secured rights in the N1 area to develop a 2 GW offshore windfarm project in the ScotWind leasing round. The West of Orkney Windfarm will be located 30km off the west coast of Orkney in Scotland.

This project, which aims to start producing renewable power by 2030, represents potentially more than GBP£4 billion of investment.

As part of this development, the partners will unlock a £140m initiative to support the development of the local supply chain, including the enhancement of ports and harbor infrastructure in Orkney and Caithness. This will ensure high levels of local content and actively promote employment and innovation in the region.

The consortium has already undertaken extensive site investigations, especially in relation to the environment, to ensure that the project fully meets its sustainable development objectives. The consortium has also finalized a grid connection agreement with National Grid.

Once built, the windfarm could also deliver renewable power to the Flotta Hydrogen Hub, a proposed large-scale green hydrogen production facility in Orkney.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies said: “We are very proud to have been awarded by Crown Estate Scotland the leasing rights to develop this offshore wind farm, TotalEnergies’ largest renewables project in Europe to date. This project, which will complement our traditional activities in Scotland, is a perfect example of the transformation of our Company. We will provide all our resources from our new UK Offshore Wind Hub in Aberdeen, which will draw on the expertise and supply chain of our oil and gas activities and on Scottish industry, all in close collaboration with the local communities. This project further demonstrates our commitment to the sustainable development of offshore wind and will contribute to our goal of reaching 100 GW of renewable generation capacity by 2030.”

The West of Orkney Windfarm is the fourth major offshore wind project that TotalEnergies has embarked on in the UK since 2020. The Company now has interests in projects with around 5 GW of potential capacity under development and construction in the UK. These projects will come on stream between 2023 and 2030.
