Siemens celebrates topping out ceremony at new wind turbine factory in Cuxhaven, Germany

November 23, 2016 evwind

Siemens celebrated the topping out ceremony for its new wind turbine manufacturing facility in Cuxhaven, Germany, attended by Parliamentary State Secretary Enak Ferlemann, Lower Saxony’s State Secretary of Economic Affairs Daniela Behrens, and the Mayor of Cuxhaven, Dr. Ulrich Getsch. The structural steel uprights now stand for the production building, which will offer 56,000 square meters of floor space. This new facility in northern Germany is one of Siemens’ most important investment projects in recent years, with some EUR 200 million invested in what is the company’s first offshore wind turbine production plant in Germany.

“In celebrating this topping ceremony, we mark another important milestone for our new, state-of-the-art production site for offshore wind turbines in Cuxhaven,” declares Markus Tacke, CEO of Siemens’ Wind Power and Renewables Division. “The new manufacturing plant is part of our efforts to establish offshore wind power as a key pillar of a sustainable energy mix. At the same time we’re creating up to 1,000 attractive jobs here and thereby supporting sustainable structural change in the coastal region.” Siemens has already received almost 1,600 job applications so far. A number of suppliers who will serve the plant have also announced plans to establish local businesses.
.................

Construction of the production building, which in places will stand 30 meters tall, is scheduled for completion by mid-2017. A two-story building enclosing some 3,800 square meters of floor space is being erected next to the production building to house offices and the site cafeteria.

This new manufacturing plant in Cuxhaven will begin producing nacelles for Siemens’ next-generation offshore wind turbines in mid-2017. The wind turbines are designed for installation at sea, each delivering an electrical generating capacity of between six and eight megawatts. Siemens’ new wind turbine blade manufacturing plant in Hull, England is set to begin operation next week already.

Sea transportation and Roll on-Roll off-loading (Ro-Ro) are both key in Siemens’ new offshore logistics concept launched in 2015. Now the company has commissioned its first specialized transport vessel, the Rotra Vente. It fulfills the needs for cost effective transportation of the large nacelles used in Siemens’ direct drive offshore wind turbines. The 141-meter long vessel can carry multiple 8-megawatt nacelles per trip and will connect Siemens’ coming manufacturing site in Cuxhaven, Germany with installation harbors in the North and Baltic Seas. Siemens and logistics partner deugro organization celebrated the delivery of the ship today, together with customers and representatives of the European offshore wind industry, in the Danish harbor of Esbjerg. A sister ship is expected to be delivered in spring 2017.

Designed from a base of an existing hull of a container ship the vessel was rebuilt for its new purpose at Holland Shipyard in Hardinxveld-Giessendam in the Netherlands. Part of its new equipment is a large bow door that allows Ro-Ro access to the restructured cargo deck. The deck is covered by a telescopic roof to protect the nacelles from salty seawater spray during transportation. Since the roof can be opened, Rotra Vente’s cargo can also be loaded via cranes at harbors without a Ro-Ro ramp. Due to maximum flexibility of the deck, she can also handle transports of up to nine wind tower sections per trip or three to four rotor blade sets.

Vestas receives 30 MW repowering order from citizen-owned wind power plant in Germany

December 28, 2016 evwind

Vestas has received an order for a repowering project consisting of nine V117-3.45 MW turbines from Bürger-Windpark Lübke-Koog Nord GmbH & Co.KG. The firm and unconditional order comprises supply and commissioning of the wind turbines as well as a 20-year full-scope Active Output Management 5000 (AOM5000) service agreement. The wind turbines will be installed at Friedrich-Wilhelm-Lübke-Koog in Schleswig-Holstein, close to the North Sea. The project is a repowering project and replaces thirteen V80-2.0 MW turbines. Wind turbine delivery and commissioning is planned for the third quarter of 2017.

Lübke-Koog has a long tradition of citizen-owned wind power plants and is home of the first citizen-owned wind park in Germany, installed in 1991. After the repowering project is completed, 95% of all citizens of Lübke Koog will be participating in the project.

“We are very proud of this high participation rate, which creates a strong local support for wind energy. The wind power plant will make an important contribution to regional value creation through tax revenue and donations, supporting local cultural and social activities”, says Arne Möbest, General Manager of Bürger-Windpark Lübke-Koog Nord. “We are working with Vestas since 2004. Vestas has proved to be a strong partner with an excellent service offering and technically reliable wind turbines”.

“We are very pleased that our long-term customer, Bürger-Windpark Lübke-Koog Nord GmbH & Co. KG, has chosen the V117-3.45 MW turbine, one of our top performers for high-wind sites, for this lighthouse citizen-owned wind farm in Northern Germany”, says Nils de Baar, President of Vestas Central Europe. “This choice reflects the strong sense of partnership that exists between our two companies”.

The German Economy Ministry announced Friday it had approved 807 megawatts of capacity at onshore wind parks.

May 19, 2017 evwind

The projects were granted at an average price requiring a subsidy of 5.71 eurocents per kilowatt hour of power, marking a price reduction of 20 percent on previous deals.

Approval procedures had been closely watched by turbine manufacturers, project developers and utilities after recent offshore wind farm auctions included bids for zero-subsidy deals for the middle of the next decade as the industry is requested to cut costs.

Friday’s auction was the first for onshore wind projects under the latest changes to the renewable feed-in tariff law in Germany accompanying the nation’s transition from fossil fuels to green energy excluding nuclear.

Inauguration du parc offshore éolien de Sandbank. 288 MW avec 72 turbines.
Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München Inaugurate 288 MW Sandbank Offshore Wind Farm

July 25, 2017 evwind

Swedish power company Vattenfall and German communal company Stadtwerke München have successfully completed the construction and officially inaugurated the 288 MW Sandbank offshore wind farm this week, making way for enough clean electricity for 400,000 German households.

This past Sunday, Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München officially inaugurated the 288 megawatt (MW) Sandbank offshore wind farm, located 90 kilometres off the German island of Sylt. This is the second of the large Energiewende projects for Germany, after the 288 MW Dan Tysk offshore wind farm. Together, Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München now have 576 MW worth of installed offshore wind capacity, which makes them some of the largest producers of renewable electricity in the German Bight.

The Sandbank project is made up of 72 wind turbines, and is expected to provide renewable electricity equivalent to what is used by 400,000 German households, avoiding 700,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

1 GW awarded in latest German onshore wind energy auction

August 19, 2017 evwind

A total of 1 GW was awarded in the second onshore auction of the year in Germany, according to the results announced on 15 August 2017.

63% of the volume was awarded to projects in the eastern German states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. In total, 281 bids amounting to almost 3GW were submitted in the latest onshore round. Community projects were given 95% of the total 1 GW on offer in the auction at an average price of €42/MWh.

The news follows the previous German onshore auction in May 2017, where of the 70 successful bids, 65 were from community projects with an average price of €57.1/MWh.

Under the current rules of the German onshore auctions, community projects do not require a permit when they bid – they have up to 54 months to secure it. And they are awarded a price on a “pay as clear” as opposed to “pay as bid” basis.”

The third German auction of the year will be launched in November 2017 and will be the last auction under the current rules. The German government recently passed temporary measures that will require all bidders to have a construction permit in place before being allowed to bid for the first two auctions in 2018. The longer-term outcome will depend on the results of the German federal elections in late September 2017.

World’s highest wind turbine catches the breeze in Germany

November 3, 2017 evwind

Max Bögl Wind has announced the construction of the world’s tallest turbine in Gaildorf, near Stuttgart in Germany. The tri-blade giant has a hub height of 178 meters (584 ft), with a total height from ground to tip of the blade of 264.5 m.

Image

The new turbine is part of a four turbine wind farm pilot project. Other hub heights manage to rise up as far as 155 m, and all are equipped with customized 3.4 MW GE generators. The project also sees a novel storage concept come into play. The so-called water battery should allow the turbines to continue operation at times when they would normally be throttled back or stopped altogether, such as during strong winds.

The wind turbine foundations double as a passive water reservoir for a pumped storage hydro power station situated in the valley below, while also pushing the turbine 40 meters further into the sky.

Each extra meter of hub height is expected to increase annual energy yield by up to 1 percent, while high hub heights also result in less wind turbulence and much better wind yield, making these behemoths a particularly good fit for inland locations with poor wind conditions.

The water battery reservoirs, which have been designed for 70 MWh of electrical storage capacity, are connected by underground polyethylene penstock to the hydro power station.

“The water battery, which was also referred to as natural power storage in the Gaildorf pilot project, can store surplus power from the grid and release it when necessary,” explains the company. “It acts as a short-term storage facility and helps to maintain grid stability while guaranteeing a continuous, uninterrupted supply of power. The pumped-storage plant is able to switch between production and storage within 30 seconds.”

The Gaildorf pilot project is expected to start feeding into the grid early next year.

Costs come down again in 1 GW German onshore wind energy auction

November 23, 2017 ewind

The results are in from the latest German onshore auction and costs have fallen again. The average support price is €38/MWh. The lowest bid was €22/MWh.

The auction was oversubscribed. 210 bids were issued with a volume of 2591 MW. The German federal network regulator awarded 1004 MW to 61 projects. 60 of the 61 winning projects are community wind farms, representing 99.2% of the capacity auctioned.

‘Pay as clear’ rules apply to the community projects, meaning all these will get €38.2/MWh. Most projects were awarded to North Rhine-Westphalia (17) and Brandenburg (16). They won around 270 megawatts each.

“It’s good to see the costs of onshore wind falling again,” said Pierre Tardieu, WindEurope Chief Policy Officer. “The previous two auctions yielded prices of €57.1/MWh and €42/MWh. Now we’re already at €38/MWh. This cost reduction is driving wind energy to become the leading source of electricity in the EU soon after 2030, as recently stated by the IEA.

Iberdrola’s Wikinger offshore wind farm connected to the grid in Germany

December 29, 2017 evwind

Image

Iberdrola has connected its Wikinger offshore wind farm to the German power grid. The facility was built over the last 18 months in the Baltic Sea.

By reaching this milestone, Wikinger adds 350 megawatts (MW) capacity to the system and will supply renewable energy to 350,000 homes, representing more than 20% of the power used by the state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, in whose waters the project is located.

Iberdrola has met the demanding time frame set to build Wikinger thanks to the company’s extraordinary multidisciplinary and multinational team, fully engaged with the project, and the collaboration of all its suppliers and contractors. In the process, it overcame all kinds of technology challenges and complications caused by the Baltic Sea’s extreme weather conditions during autumn and winter.

Wikinger, Iberdrola’s first solo offshore project, had a particularly complex construction phase. In its major stages:
280 piles were driven into the sea bed to hold the foundations
The offshore substation jacket was installed
The Andalucía offshore substation was installed and commissioned
The underwater cables connecting with Lubmin onshore substation were installed and commissioned in coordination with 50Hertz
More than 80 kilometres (50 miles) of underwater array cables were run and commissioned
The 70 jackets and wind turbines were installed and commissioned

...........................

With an investment of nearly €1.4 billion, Wikinger will prevent almost 600,000 tonnes of CO 2 from being released into the atmosphere each year.
To build the project, 280 piles delivered by Windar were driven into the sea bed, each one measuring 131-foot long and eight-foot diameter and weighing 150 tonnes. Seventy 620-tonne foundations were manufactured by Bladt in Lindo (Denmark) and by Navantia at Fene shipyard (Spain).

The AD-5-135 turbines, with 5 MW unit capacity, were fabricated by Adwen at its plants in Bremerhaven and Stade (Germany). They are the largest wind turbines installed by the company thus far, comprising a 222-tonne nacelle, a rotor that is 135 m (442 feet) in diameter with 77.5 m-long (254 feet) blades, and a 75 m-high (246 feet) tower.

Also, one of the key infrastructures at Wikinger is the offshore substation, named Andalusia, which will be used jointly by Iberdrola and 50Hertz, one of the German system operators. It was manufactured by Navantia at its Puerto Real (Spain) facilities, weighs 8,500 tonnes – more that the Eiffel tower and the Statue of Liberty combined – and it’s the wind farm’s energy core.

Germany wind energy reach record high in 2017

January 30, 2018 evwind

Report published by the German Wind Energy Association and the Association of German Manufacturers of Machinery and Industrial Equipment shows that a record of 1,792 new wind turbines were installed on land in 2017 with a total power generation capacity of 5,333 Megawatt. The figures marked an increase of 15 percent compared to 2016.

BWE and VDMA estimated that 28,675 wind turbines were attached to German electricity networks at the start of 2018, as renewable energy sources increasingly contribute to domestic power generation. The number of maritime wind turbines had also increased substantially in 2017.

For the coming year, the authors of the report only expected new wind turbines with a lower capacity of around 3,500 Megawatt to be installed and urged the Federal Government to schedule additional tenders for wind energy production.
