Total 800 MW.

China on track to build world’s largest offshore wind farm

April 13, 2017 evwind

State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), one of the top five power generators in China, is making swift progress in raising its planned 800 megawatts wind power farm off the coast of eastern China’s Yancheng, Jiangsu province. Once completed, the farm will eclipse the 630 MW London Array as the world’s largest offshore wind farm. It is set to enter full operation in 2018.

Image

Maturing technology and increasing competition have helped to reduce costs, making offshore power increasingly competitive. The push to expand offshore has been driven by the fact that many major economic hubs in China are located near the coast, analysts said.

The construction of Yancheng project will occur in three phases. The first 100 MW installed capacity consists of 25 4.0 mW Siemens turbines, which are already spinning, occupying 20 square kilometers of water just 10 meters from shore. By March 2017, this portion of the project had generated 190 million kWh of electricity.

The second phase of construction is currently underway, set to boost installed capacity by another 400 MW by October 2017 using 100 wind turbines. A 2*240,000 kVA transformer will be used in its floating booster station designed by Danish firm Ramboll. Once installed, it will become Asia’s largest offshore booster station and China’s first booster station to follow European standards.

Due to start in the second half of 2017, the third phase of the project is situated further south. Wind turbines with 300 mW of capacity will be erected in the water at a depth of 18 meters, 36 kilometers from the shore. In order to benefit from the annual average wind speed of 7.43m/s, the yearly utilization time of the turbines will be 2,545 hours. This phase of construction is expected to be completed in 2018.

SPIC is a global green energy provider with a total installed capacity of 117 gW. It operates in the industries of coal, aluminum, logistics, finance, environmental protection and advanced technology. It maintains a presence in 36 countries and regions, including Australia, Chile, Malta, Japan, Brazil, Turkey and Vietnam.

China’s installed wind energy capacity up to 151 gigawatts

April 26, 2017 evwind

China’s installed wind energy capacity has increased yet again, growing 13% in the first quarter over the same time a year earlier, bringing the country’s cumulative capacity up to 151 gigawatts.

China had 151 million kilowatts of installed wind power capacity as of the end of the first quarter, up 13 percent year on year.

Provinces of Qinghai, Shaanxi, Henan and Hebei increased the most in wind power capacity during the first three months, the NEA said in an official statement.

Wind power facilities generated 68.7 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in the first quarter, 26 percent more than in the same period in 2016.

Due to distribution of wind resources and an imperfect grid system, 13.5 billion kilowatt hours of wind power was wasted in the first quarter, down 5.7 billion kilowatt hours from the same period last year.

Guangdong to begin building over 10 offshore wind farms this year

January 25, 2018 evwind

Southern China’s Guangdong Province plans to begin construction of more than 10 offshore wind farms this year, Governor Ma Xingrui said Thursday.

The new wind power projects off the coast of Guangdong are expected to generate a total capacity of 3.65 gigawatts (GW), Ma told local lawmakers in a report on the work of the provincial government.

The projects are part of Guangdong’s efforts to improve the energy mix for greener economic growth in the province’s coastal regions, according to Ma.

Guangdong plans to begin construction of offshore wind farms capable of generating a capacity of 12 GW by the end of 2020, according to a plan released by the province’s development and reform commission last year.

Last month, China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) said it would build a 3 GW deepwater wind-power project off the coast of Guangdong.

The country’s largest nuclear power operator said it would install wind turbines at two deepwater sea areas near the city of Jieyang.

The company plans to invest 5 billion yuan (785 million U.S. dollars) in the initial period, with the total investment estimated at over 100 billion yuan.

......But due to higher costs, poor grid connections and the grid’s preference for more predictable coal-generated power, 21.7 percent of the installed wind power generating capacity and 21 percent of the solar power generating capacity in Xinjiang were left idle last quarter.

China announces plans for world’s biggest wind farm on Mongolian border

January 9, 2019 evwind

The State Power Investment Corporation (Spic), one of China’s top five energy generators, has announced plans to build a 6GW windfarm in the north of the country, close to its border with Mongolia.

Spic announced that is has received planning approval for its project from the Ulanqab Municipal Development of Inner Mongolia. If it goes ahead, it would install wind turbines across an area of 3,800 square kilometres, roughly the same size as the UK county of Suffolk, at a construction cost of about $6.8bn.

The aim is to deliver almost 19TWh of unsubsidised electricity to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei triangle.

Spic has not given details of the schemes schedule, but it said that it would be completed in time for the 2022 Winter Olympics, which are due to be hosted in Beijing.

As well as installing turbines, it will be necessary to build 12 ultra-high-voltage transmission grids to support the scheme.
