Brazil to Raise Ethanol Mixed With Gasoline to 25%
........
The measure to boost the ethanol mix to 25 percent from 20 percent will take effect on May 2, said Manoel Bertone, the Agriculture Ministry’s production and bio-energy secretary. In February, the government reduced the mix after inventories fell near the end of the sugar-cane harvest.

.......
.....“Brazil won’t have problems with ethanol supply this year,” Bertone said. “We’ll have a huge crop and government policies to help mills supply the market regularly.”

$540 Million Investment Boosts Brazil's Ethanol Sector

USAgNet - 06/07/2010

The Brazilian Innovation Agency, FINEP (Research and Projects Financing), and Brazil's National Development Bank have entered into a new partnership to promote bioethanol development, establishing a programme which will provide up to $540 million in financing to the country’s biofuels sector.

With operations scheduled to begin on July 30 the project aims to promote innovation in the field of bioethanol.

The sums will be invested in technology projects over the next three to four years, which would advance the use of sugarcane, particularly bagasse and straw, to produce ethanol and new products such as polymers, special oils and biodiesel. This is an initial step toward the development of an industrial complex for ethanol in Brazil, following a similar model to that of Brazil’s petrochemical industry.

The goal of second generation ethanol is to double Brazil’s ethanol production capacity in the country without increasing the area necessary to plant sugarcane.

Second generation ethanol, produced from sugarcane bagasse and straw with the potential to be a breakthrough in the sugar and ethanol sectors in the next five years, is to be funded by BNDES.

The technology for manufacturing second generation ethanol is currently under analysis for economic viability.

http://english.pravda.ru/hotspots/confl ... efies_un-0
Brazil Defies UN and Will Export Ethanol to Iran

Although the businesses of the export sector of Brazil are trying to keep away from Iran because of sanctions imposed by the UN on Tehran's disputed nuclear program, the Brazilian government, in a clear rejection demonstration to the sanctions, said that it is going to export, yes, ethanol to the government of Tehran.

According to the Foreign Ministry (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil), the UN sanctions against Iran do not restrict ethanol exports to that Persian country. "We will export to anywhere we want, our priority is to open markets. UN sanctions do not prohibit the sale of ethanol, so we do not know why there would be trouble. Brazil will not sanction voluntarily," said an official with the Brazilian government.

Brazil’s Petrobras Eyes 2011 Start-Up for Ethanol Pipeline

RIO DE JANEIRO

Brazilian state-controlled energy giant Petrobras said a 542-kilometer (335-mile) pipeline to transport ethanol from sugarcane-producing areas to the metropolises of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro should come online next year.

The Brazilian company said Wednesday in a press release that the state-run Brazilian Environment Institute, known as Ibama, awarded the preliminary license for the project but that the company still needs an installation license before construction can begin.

Petrobras said in the statement that its goal is to begin construction of the pipeline this year with a view to bringing it on stream in the second half of 2011.

The company said the pipeline, which will have the capacity to transport up to 12.9 million cubic meters (455 million cubic feet) of ethanol annually, will be used to send the fuel from mills in the producing regions of Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo and the midwest to the biggest consumer markets and eventually to ports for export.

The pipeline, which will use existing pipeline sections to minimize the environmental impact, will be built by a partnership in which Petrobras, Japan’s Mitsui and Brazilian construction firm Camargo Correa are the shareholders.

Two years ago, Petrobras and Mitsui created a company to supply biofuels – mainly ethanol – to the Japanese market.

Petrobras plans to build a pipeline that will run from Uberaba, Minas Gerais to Vale do Paraiba, Sao Paulo and then connect to other existing pipelines in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states.

Brazil, the world’s leading producer and exporter of sugarcane-based ethanol, is making an international effort to promote this alternative fuel as a way to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and help farmers in poor countries.

Petrobras announced last month that its $224 billion business plan for the 2010-2014 period includes $3.5 billion for the biofuel sector.

More than 7 million automobiles in Brazil are “flex-fuel,” meaning they can run on any mix of gasoline or ethanol; roughly 93 percent of new light vehicles made in the country have this technology.

Last year, Brazil produced 27.5 billion liters (7 billion gallons) of sugarcane-based ethanol fuel, more than five billion liters of which was exported, mainly to the United States.

Shares of Petrobras, which is a global leader in deepwater oil exploration and production, trade on the Sao Paulo, New York, Madrid and Buenos Aires stock exchanges, but the Brazilian government retains control through a golden share. EFE

Brazilian ethanol is the best hope for replacing oil, says BP's Bob Dudley
Ethanol derived from Brazilian sugar-cane offers the best hope of replacing oil as the world's main source of fuel when it runs out, according to Bob Dudley, BP's chief executive.

He said Brazilian ethanol is the "best type of renewable energy" and offers the possibility of an "ultrapotent fuel that could revolutionise the market".

BP is channelling its research into renewable fuels accordingly, with 40pc of its $1bn (£625m) annual spend in this area targeted at Brazilian ethanol, Mr Dudley told the weekly Brazilian news magazine Veja.

"There will obviously a time when the oil runs out and with this prospect on the horizon, we will use more renewable energy sources," he said.

"The alcohol extracted from sugar cane is cheaper, less polluting and more efficient than that from corn, for example, produced in the US.

"Brazil also has a huge advantage in relation to its competitors. The climate and soil are ideal and the sugarcane crop does not have to compete for areas with food crops, as happens in the case of America."

More than half the cars in Brazil already have flex-fuel engines, meaning they can run on pure ethanol or ethanol mixed with petrol, and around 80pc of new cars sold are of this type.

Embraer, Brazil's aerospace company, has also produced small aircraft which are fuelled by ethanol.

Mr Dudley said BP had recognised the potential of Brazilian ethanol some years ago, even before the discovery of vast oil fields off the country's south-east coast focused international attention on Brazil as an important energy source.

"Of $1bn that we spend every year worldwide on research on renewable fuels, $400m (£250m) is destined for Brazilian alcohol," he said. "The goal is to develop cellulosic ethanol and create an ultrapotent fuel that may revolutionise the market."

Shell, Brazil's Cosan form $12 billion ethanol unit

(AFP) – 11 hours ago

SAO PAULO, Brazil — Anglo-Dutch energy giant Shell and Brazilian sugar-production group Cosan said Monday they were forming one of the biggest joint ethanol fuel ventures in the world, with an estimated market value of $12 billion.

The new entity, to be called Raizen, will employ around 40,000 people and produce over 2.2 billion liters (580 million gallons) of ethanol per year to Brazilian and international markets, the two companies said in a statement.

Raizen should be launched in the first half of this year, they said.

"Due to the size of its operations, Raizen will help sugar cane ethanol, a sustainable, clean and renewable source of energy, to consolidate itself worldwide and strengthen Brazil's position in the international biofuels trading business," said the venture's chief executive, Vasco Dias.

Raizen will have 23 mills able to crush 62 million tonnes of sugar cane per year to produce the ethanol. The mills will also output four million tonnes of sugar per year.

The venture will distribute some of the ethanol in 4,500 Esso service stations across Brazil that Consan owns, and through participation in distribution depots for aviation fuel in 54 airports.

The statement said the new company would have approximately $1.6 billion in cash inflow brought to the table by Shell.

"We want to be even bigger," Dias said. "We want to be recognized globally for our excellence in the development, production and marketing of sustainable energy."

Raizen plans to finance its plans by tapping the market, probably through issuing corporate bonds.

"We are in contact with the rating agencies to obtain an evaluation. Inherited debt for the company is $2.5 billion, but that is considered 'comfortable' given the $1.6 billion to be brought in by Shell," Raizen's vice president in charge of finances, Luis Rapparini, said, according to Energia Hoje, a specialized website on Brazil's energy sector.

Europe and Asia are the main targets for ethanol exports, through Shell's established network of outlets. The European Commission gave the green light last month for the new venture to be formed.

In the United States, Raizen aims to bolster lobbying by Brazilian sugar-growing companies to reduce or eliminate an import tariff on ethanol designed to protect US ethanol producers.

Brazil is the second-biggest producer of ethanol in the world, after the United States, and the biggest exporter of the biofuel.

It sustains a large domestic market using ethanol through the sales of cars whose engines can take either gasoline, ethanol or a mix of the two.

With Brazil's economy growing strongly, pressure is building to consolidate a fractured ethanol sector, forming corporations around sugar mills that are often family owned.

Cosan, a publicly traded company, is the world's biggest ethanol company.

It was founded and is controlled by the family of a Brazilian billionaire, Rubens Ometta, whose net worth is put at $2.1 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

The company bought the Esso outlets in Brazil from US oil giant ExxonMobil in 2008. They will be rebranded with the Shell logo over the next three years, according to Ometta, the news website Globo reported.

It said Raizen will be the fifth biggest company with its headquarters in Brazil.
