General Motors invests in Canadian lithium-ion battery recycler

General Motors (NYSE: GM) is boosting efforts to secure lithium supply, a crucial ingredient for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, by investing in Canadian battery recycling company Lithion Recycling Inc.


The move, which financial details were not disclosed, creates a partnership between the world’s second largest automaker and the Québec-based company to pursue a circular battery ecosystem using Lithion’s technology.

The companies said that third-party lifecycle analysis show that Lithion’s technology has a recovery rate of over 95%. As it uses green energy, the company’s technology and operations will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 75% and water usage by over 90% compared to mining battery materials, they said.

Unfazed by the slowing global economy, buyers of key components in the powering of EVs are stepping up efforts to lock in supplies.

GM is aggressively scaling battery cell and EV production in North America to reach its target of more than one million units of annual capacity by 2025. The automaker also aims to eliminate tailpipe emissions from all its new light-duty vehicles by 2035.

“We are building a supply chain and recycling strategy that can grow with us,” Jeff Morrison, GM vice president, global purchasing and supply chain said in the statement.

In August, Ultium Cells, GM’s joint venture with LG Energy Solution, opened its first US. battery cell plant, with two additional plants under construction.

A fourth planned battery cell plant will bring GM’s projected total US battery capacity to 160 GWh.

GM says the binding agreements it has in place guarantee that all its battery raw material need will be met, allowing it to reach annual planned of 2 million battery-powered cars a year by 2025. That’s when GM will be ramping up production of about 30 electric models globally.

As the company moves forward, it will work to increasingly localize its battery materials supply chain to North America, it said.

Lithion will launch its first commercial recycling operations in 2023. The opening of this facility, with a capacity of 7,500 tonnes per year of lithium-ion batteries, will be followed in 2025 by the launch of Lithion’s first hydrometallurgical plant.

North America’s biggest battery materials processor, Cirba Solutions, announced Wednesday the expansion of its lithium-ion processing facility in Lancaster, Ohio with an investment over $200 million.


It will be one of the largest battery recycling facilities operating in North America, the company said, and estimates it will produce enough battery-grade raw materials from recycled batteries to power more than 200,000 new EVs annually.

This expansion supports the company’s four-year roadmap to increase its recycled battery cathode production by 600%, Cirba said, adding it will also create an estimated 150 jobs to the greater Columbus area, while broadening community outreach and battery education to the public.

“This project supports the growing need for providing critical EV materials for a sustainable and sustained domestic battery supply chain,” David Klanecky, Cirba Solutions CEO said in a media statement.

“This strategic location will supply battery grade metal salts to our customers’ manufacturing facilities and contribute to global reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.”

Cirba Solutions supports a critical stage in the battery supply chain by collecting, transporting, and processing manufacturing scrap and end-of-life batteries. Currently, it is one of the largest producers of black mass from recycled lithium-ion batteries with more than 50 million pounds of EV batteries recycled.

“Expanding the capacity for lithium-ion battery recycling within the United States is imperative as the country seeks to increase domestically sourced battery materials,” Klanecky said.

“This will be one of many of our operational investments to strengthen supply, enhance national security, and promote sustainability principles. It will also bolster more manufacturers’ ability to reach their electrification goals, including those set out in the Inflation Reduction Act.”

Last month, Cirba Solutions announced plans to construct a lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Eloy, Arizona. The 75,000-square-foot location is expected to process enough battery material to power 50,000 EVs annually.

The Biden administration said on Wednesday it is awarding $2.8 billion in grants to boost US production of electric vehicle batteries and the minerals used to build them, part of a bid to wean the country off supplies from China.


Cirba Solutions will receive approximately $75 million in federal funds to expand critical mineral upgrading assets at its lithium-ion processing facility in Lancaster, Ohio.

The largest cross-chemistry battery management and materials processor in the industry, Cirba is a recipient of the first set of projects funded by Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to expand domestic manufacturing of batteries for electric vehicles and the electrical grid, with a focus on domestic processing of materials and components currently imported from other countries.

Engineers at the University of Toronto are proposing a new, more sustainable method to mine lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese from lithium-ion batteries that have reached the end of their lives.


In a paper recently published in Resources, Conservation and Recycling, the researchers explain that conventional processes for recycling lithium-ion batteries are energy intensive and not environmentally friendly.

On one hand, pyrometallurgy, which uses extremely high temperatures, produces greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, hydrometallurgy, which uses acids and reducing agents for extraction, creates wastewater that needs to be processed and handled.

In contrast, the University of Toronto group is using supercritical fluid extraction to recover metals from end-of-life Li-ion batteries. This process separates one component from another by using an extracting solvent at a temperature and pressure above its critical point — where it adopts the properties of both a liquid and a gas.

To recover the metals, the scientists used carbon dioxide as a solvent, which was brought to the supercritical phase by increasing the temperature above 31 Celsius, and the pressure up to 7 megapascals.

They were able to show that this process matched the extraction efficiency of lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese to 90% when compared to the conventional leaching processes, while also using fewer chemicals and generating significantly less secondary waste. The main source of energy expended during the supercritical fluid extraction process was due to the compression of the carbon dioxide.

“The advantage of our method is that we are using carbon dioxide from the air as the solvent instead of highly hazardous acids or bases,” head researcher Gisele Azimi said in a media statement. “Carbon dioxide is abundant, cheap and inert, and it’s also easy to handle, vent and recycle.” 

A caffeinated connection

Supercritical fluid extraction is not a new process. It has been used in the food and pharmaceutical industries to extract caffeine from coffee beans since the 1970s. Azimi and her team’s work builds on previous research in the lab to recover rare earth elements from nickel-metal-hydride batteries.

However, this is the first time that this process has been used to recover metals from lithium-ion batteries.

“We are now moving towards commercialization of this method to increase its technology readiness level. Our next step is to finalize partnerships to build industrial-scale recycling facilities for secondary resources. If it’s enabled, it would be a big game changer,” Azimi said.

In her view, if more batteries are recycled, it is possible to sustain the constrained supply chain for battery metals and help bring down the cost of EV batteries, making the vehicles more affordable.

Electra Battery Materials has launched a demonstration plant designed to recover and recycle high-value elements found in lithium-ion batteries including nickel, cobalt, lithium, copper and graphite at its refinery complex north of Toronto.


Electra claims it will process up to 75 tonnes of black mass material in batches mode using its proprietary hydrometallurgical process in the demonstration plant. Electra plans to complete the demonstration plant in early 2023, while providing regular updates.

Pending the successful completion of the demonstration plant, Electra says it will assess whether to continue processing black mass throughout 2023 with material supplied by its business partners or from third parties.

“The launch of our black mass recycling demonstration plant caps a year filled with a number of significant achievements for Electra,” said Trent Mell, Electra’s CEO.

“With the outlook for electric vehicle adoption in North America becoming increasingly bullish as a result of the recent passage of the US Inflation Reduction Act and the considerable investments made by automotive companies to electrify their fleet, the need for a domestic supply of battery-grade materials supply whether through primary refining or recycling processes becomes critical,” added Mell.

Le groupe minier français Eramet prévoit le démarrage d'une première usine pilote de recyclage des batteries de voitures électriques "cet été" à Trappes (Yvelines), en vue de valider un projet d'usine dans le Nord de la France d'ici 2025.

Le groupe, qui cherche à recycler les métaux tels le lithium, le cobalt ou le nickel contenus dans les batteries et dont l'Europe manque cruellement, a reçu jeudi une subvention européenne de 70 millions d'euros du fonds pour l'innovation de la Commission européenne.

"Ceci montre la crédibilité de notre projet" baptisé ReLieVe, mené en partenariat avec Suez qui assurera la collecte des batteries, a estimé Eramet vendredi.

"L'usine de démonstration située dans notre centre de recherche et innovation de Trappes est en cours de construction. Elle nous servira à poursuivre les tests et valider notre procédé. Sa production devrait démarrer cet été", a déclaré une responsable du groupe à l'AFP.

Après découpage des batteries en modules, les métaux présents sont récupérés sous forme de "black mass", un mélange de nickel, cobalt, manganèse, lithium, graphite qui sera ensuite raffiné par voie hydrométallurgique pour obtenir des sels de ces métaux, réexploitables pour la production de nouvelles batteries.

Une usine grandeur nature de recyclage devrait ensuite voir le jour à Dunkerque, d'une capacité de traitement de 200 000 batteries de voitures électriques chaque année à partir de 2025, selon le magazine Challenges.

Le groupe a déjà parlé de ce grand projet d'économie circulaire, mais aucune décision d'investissement n'a encore été prise, souligne Eramet. En mars, le groupe avait indiqué que "si les conditions économiques (étaient) réunies", une "entrée en phase industrielle pourrait intervenir dès 2024 sur l'étape amont de production de blackmass et à horizon 2025-2026 pour l'étape de raffinage de la blackmass en produits pour batteries".

Batteries: l'Etat alloue 30 millions d'euros à deux projets de recyclage

Le gouvernement a annoncé lundi soutenir, à hauteur de 30 millions d'euros, deux projets de recyclage de batteries automobiles, portés par l'alliance Veolia-Solvay-Renault d'une part, et Mecaware-Verkor d'autre part, dans le cadre du plan d'investissement France 2030.

Le projet porté par le constructeur automobile Renault avec Veolia (traitement des déchets et de l'eau) et le chimiste belge Solvay prévoit la construction d'une unité de recyclage de batteries d'une capacité de 10.000 tonnes par an en 2023, suivie d'un deuxième déploiement "trois fois plus important en 2028", précise le ministère de l'Industrie dans un communiqué.

Le projet du recycleur lyonnais Mecaware et du fabricant de batteries grenoblois Verkor vise, lui, à construire une "unité industrielle de recyclage des rebuts de production" de batterie et de réutilisation des métaux.

"Le soutien à ces deux projets de recyclage des batteries électriques illustre la détermination du gouvernement à maîtriser les chaînes de valeur de la transition énergétique", a déclaré Agnès Pannier-Runacher, ministre de la Transition énergétique, citée dans le communiqué.

"Cet enjeu est doublement stratégique: il nous permettra d'aller vers une économie de plus en plus circulaire et donc avec une empreinte environnementale maîtrisée, mais aussi de capter les métaux critiques indispensables à la transition énergétique", a-t-elle ajouté.

Le plan d'investissement France 2030 est doté de 30 milliards d'euros, dont 950 millions pour des projets de production et de recyclage de matériaux dits critiques.

En novembre, une première enveloppe de 100 millions d'euros avait été attribuée pour des projets de production et de recyclage de ces matériaux à cinq entreprises: Imerys (extraction de lithium dans l'Allier), Viridian (raffinage du lithium dans le Bas-Rhin), Eramet (recyclage de batteries Li-ion), Sanou Koura (extraction de métaux de déchets électroniques dans les Ardennes), WEEECycling (extraction de métaux de déchets électroniques en Seine-Maritime).

En janvier, le groupe minier français Eramet avait par ailleurs annoncé la conclusion d'un protocole d'accord exclusif avec Électricité de Strasbourg (ÉS), filiale d'EDF, pour étudier le développement d'une production de lithium de source géothermale de 10.000 tonnes par an à l'horizon 2030, pouvant servir à fabriquer des batteries électriques.

Lors d'une visite du site lundi, le ministre délégué chargé de l'Industrie Roland Lescure a estimé que la production locale permettrait de produire 250.000 batteries par an.

"Ici, nous écrivons l'avenir", s'est-il félicité, en évoquant "une révolution industrielle du XXIe siècle en marche".

Ecobat to build new battery recycling facility in Arizona
Ecobat, the global leader in battery recycling, is building its third lithium-ion battery recycling facility and its first in North America.

The new facility, located in Casa Grande, Arizona, will initially produce 10,000 estimated tonnes of recycled material per year, with plans to expand capacity to satisfy the increasing need to recycle lithium-ion batteries.

“We are thrilled to grow our global lithium-ion battery recycling footprint with a new facility in Casa Grande, Arizona,” CEO Marcus Randolph said in a media release.

“This facility, like our lithium-ion battery recycling facilities in Germany and the United Kingdom, represents a significant milestone in Ecobat’s strategy to grow our lithium-ion battery recycling business to a scale, similar to our world-leading lead battery recycling business,” he added.

Ecobat Casa Grande will repurpose lithium-ion batteries reaching end-of-life through diagnostics, sorting, shredding and material separation to produce a concentrated black mass containing the valuable materials in lithium-ion batteries.

It will be located approximately 1.6 km from the existing Ecobat Resources Arizona facility, which has been using state-of-the-art technology and a skilled workforce for 15 years to manufacture anodes. Start-up is expected in the third quarter of this year.

Earlier this month, Ecobat completed the sale of its Stolberg multi-metals processing plant in Germany to global commodities trader Trafigura.

Mercedes annonce l'inauguration d'une toute nouvelle usine dédiée à la revalorisation des batteries de ses voitures électriques. Ainsi, le constructeur allemand promet un taux de recyclage allant jusqu'à 96 %, battant alors tous ses rivaux et notamment Tesla. Un nouveau coup dur pour les détracteurs de ce type de motorisation.

Electra Battery Materials successfully recovered lithium, in its black mass recycling trial, conducted at its refinery north of Toronto.

Lithium is a critical mineral needed for the electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain. Black mass is the term used to describe the material remaining once expired lithium-ion batteries are shredded and all casings removed.

Black mass contains high-value elements, including lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper, and graphite, that once recovered, can be recycled to produce new lithium-ion batteries. According to data from McKinsey & Company, available battery material for recycling is expected to grow by 20% per year, through 2040.

Electra launched its black mass demonstration plant at the end of December 2022 and has processed material in a batch mode, successfully extracting lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper, and graphite. Electra says the recovery and subsequent production of a technical-grade lithium carbonate at the plant validates the company’s proprietary hydrometallurgical process and efforts to date in commissioning the refinery complex.

As a result of preliminary results achieved to date and interest expressed by potential commercial partners, Electra has decided to extend its black mass processing and recovery activities through June 2023, beyond the company’s initial target of 75 tonnes.

“Recovering lithium from black mass represents a potential game changer for Electra and the North American EV supply chain,” said Trent Mell, CEO of Electra. “From Electra’s perspective, it considerably strengthens the economics of our battery recycling strategy by providing another high-value product we can sell,” Mell said.

Li-Cycle Holdings Corp said on Monday it will build a French facility to break down batteries from forklift manufacturer The Kion Group, marking the latest expansion by the rapidly growing recycling company.


The French facility, which is expected to open in 2024 and complement similar sites under development in Germany and Norway, will break down lithium-ion batteries that power Kion’s forklifts and other heavy machinery, giving Li-Cycle a fresh source of batteries to recycle beyond the consumer automobile market.

Li-Cycle declined to disclose how much it is spending on the French operation, though the company has a $40 million budget for the year to build such battery processing facilities across the globe.

“We believe strongly in a regional approach to recycling as our customers begin to localize their own supply chains,” Tim Johnston, Li-Cycle’s executive chairman, told Reuters. “Europe continues to be a growth center for electrification, so we are going to continue to grow there.”

Li-Cycle estimates that a majority of Kion’s 1.7 million forklifts will eventually be powered by lithium-ion batteries. Given their heavy use, those batteries are likely to wear down faster than those powering consumer automobiles.

Li-Cycle’s European plan is based in part on its North American hub-and-spoke network, in which the company has built collection and processing facilities across the continent to turn batteries into black mass, which is essentially shredded battery parts.

A central facility under construction in Rochester, New York, will further break down that black mass into lithium, nickel and other metals. Li-Cycle plans for now to produce black mass at its French and other European sites, and then ship that material to Rochester for processing, Johnston said.

The French announcement comes less than a month after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Li-Cycle’s battery processing facility in Ontario.

Battery recycling projects get $3.5 million from US
The Argonne National Laboratory received $3.5 million in funding from the United States Department of Energy to advance battery recycling technology and support the effort to expand commercial-scale, domestic production of battery materials.

Scientists at Argonne have pioneered new ways to extract materials from old batteries so they can be recycled and used again. They also have developed state-of-the-art models to evaluate the economic and environmental impacts of each stage of a battery’s life, from the mining of raw materials to recycling.

This experience has led to the launching of a number of partnerships with companies such as Lilac Solutions, which has developed a new method to extract lithium from brines that the company said can double the lithium recovery compared to conventional methods and dramatically reduce production time.

Together with Argonne, Lilac is working to better understand the potential of its new technology, particularly when it comes to its minimal impact on the environment.

Similarly, Argonne is helping the American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) conduct analyses on its field demonstration facility that produces lithium hydroxide from claystone deposits.

The goal is to estimate production costs and environmental impacts, as well as identify opportunities for improvement.

ABTC is also working with Argonne on a separate project that will optimize and test new advanced separation and processing technologies at an ABTC battery recycling facility. The solutions, they said, have the potential to work better and cost less while using less water and having less of an environmental impact.

Another partner Argonne will continue to work with thanks to the new funding is Michigan Technical University, whose team has a project that aims to address issues of the cost and quality of material produced in battery recycling by coupling the recycling with existing mine waste reclamation efforts.

According to the lab, if successful, the solution could reduce energy use by 25%. It could also help to establish a profitable US battery recycling business and provide needed battery materials from unconventional sources.

Argonne scientists will also be working with Princeton NuEnergy Inc. to develop new direct recycling methods for end-of-life lithium-ion batteries.

The focus of Princeton’s initiative involves using the battery components without breaking down the chemical structure. Today, most battery recycling involves disassembling existing batteries to extract the raw material needed for production. The new approach lowers costs and increases material performance. It also reduces chemical waste and limits the risk associated with the materials supply chain.

Finally, Argonne will be supporting the University of California San Diego in the development of a working pilot for a new battery recycling technology that integrates a purification process into regeneration to improve the quality of cathode materials while reducing costs by up to 80%. This could help solve the issue of limited domestic cathode supply.

“Argonne is excited to have this great opportunity to help advance battery recycling technology and support the effort to expand commercial-scale battery materials production and manufacturing in the US,” said Jeffrey Spangenberger, who leads the materials recycling group at the lab. “The first electric vehicles to hit the US market are nearing the end of their life. Argonne is developing the technology needed to recycle their EV batteries and reclaim the precious metals they contain, so they can be used to power the electric vehicles of the future.”

According to Spangenberger, by 2040, nearly 8 million tons of EV batteries may be available for recycling. Tapping them for the US’ needs can reduce emissions by as much as 16 million tons a year while also providing a much-needed domestic source for battery materials.

Swedish battery recycling plant leads the way

Stena Recycling Group has completed construction of its first recycling facility for lithium-ion batteries, claimed to be one of the first at industry scale in Europe.

The Swedish company says agreements are in place with industry partners in both battery and vehicle production to secure a high recycling volume from the start. In 2021 it received SEK 70.7 million (EUR 6.26 million) from the Swedish Energy Agency towards the cost of the new facility. Total investment amounts EUR 22 million.

‘Coming EU regulation, combined with the increasing electrification of vehicles and other products, means there will be huge pressure to find solutions to recycle vehicle batteries and create circular value chains,’ says Marcus Martinsson, product area manager batteries at Stena. ‘This investment will give Stena Recycling a key role in the process of electrifying the automotive industry.’

The new plant has an initial yearly recycling capacity of 10 000 tonnes and will handle material collected and pre-treated in Stena Recycling’s existing facilities and processes in Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Finland, Norway, Germany and in Italy.

‘We are prepared to scale up our battery recycling capacity as the market grows,’ Martinsson adds. ‘Within ten years we expect to handle at least five to ten times higher volume than what we can handle today.

Kristofer Sundsgård, president and ceo of Stena Metall Group, believes the cooperation between industry players will be essential for a successful green transition. ‘We are ready to develop and cultivate our cooperation with the complete value chain from battery producers, equipment manufacturers, to the electric vehicle industry to ensure a circular material flow, meet the demands of the market and regulators, and contribute to a more sustainable future.’

Glencore to offer lithium batteries recycling services in Spain and Portugal

Swiss miner and commodities trader Glencore (LON: GLEN) is joining forces with waste management services provider FCC Ámbito and Spanish energy firm Iberdrola to offer lithium-ion battery recycling services in Spain and Portugal.


The partners will build a recycling plant that will also offer second-life solutions for batteries, both from gigafactory production scrap and end-of-life batteries, Glencore said in the statement.

The companies said they have assessed existing battery recycling capabilities and feed availability in Spain and Portugal, but the location of their factory, to be run by FCC, is yet to be determined.

Kunal Sinha, Glencore’s global head of recycling, said the alliance supported the company’s ambition to grow its recycling business in new markets.

“We view production scrap as well as post-consumer materials as a valuable resource that will help supply the increasing demand for critical metals in support of the energy transition and the world’s net zero ambition,” Sinha said.

María J. Kaifer, technical director and head of circular economy at FCC said in a separate statement that the project would be run in collaboration with the Iberian Energy Storage Research Centre, which has already conducted research into the capabilities of existing battery recycling.

As demand for lithium batteries continues to increase, the need for recycling them is on the rise. The recycling of battery materials is expected to reach 35,000 tonnes annually in Spain by 2035, according to Iberdrola.

It is estimated that only 5% of the world’s lithium batteries are being recycled, with market analysts at Wood Mackenzie anticipating the sector will not take off before 2030.
