Hewlett-Packard in wind power deal with SunEdison in Texas

July 21, 2015 evwind

The agreement, which is enough to fully power HP’s Texas-based data center operations, will allow the company to meet reductions of greenhouse-gas emissions by the end of HP’s 2015 fiscal year – five years ahead of schedule. HP currently operates Texas-based data centers in Houston, Hockley, Plano and two in Austin.

As part of ongoing efforts to lower the carbon footprint of its business, HP today announced that it has signed a 12-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for 112 megawatts (MW) of wind power with SunEdison, Inc., the world’s largest renewable energy development company.

The 112 MW of locally generated wind electricity is sufficient to power 100 percent of HP’s Texas-based data center operations, the equivalent of powering 42,600 homes each year, and will avoid the emission of more than 340,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

The agreement will allow HP to reach its 2020 operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goal by the end of FY15, five years ahead of schedule. That goal originally aimed to reduce total GHG emissions from its operations (Scope 1 and Scope 2) by 20 percent of 2010 levels by 2020.

The approximately 1.5 million square feet of Texas data center operations support HP’s entire internal global information technology (IT) requirements and the delivery of IT services to a portion of HP customers. HP currently operates five data centers in Texas, located in Houston, Hockley, Plano, and two in Austin.

Google doubles down on renewable energy

December 4, 2015 evwind

Clearly, renewable energy works for Google.

The internet search company recently announced it’s going to nearly double the amount of clean electricity it uses to power its data centers, committing to purchase an additional 842 megawatts (MW). Google has now procured nearly two gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy, more than halfway to its goal of having a total of 3.6 GW by 2025.

American wind will create the lion share of this new clean power, with Google revealing that it will purchase 625 MW of wind energy from three U.S. projects. Nearly two-thirds of this will come from wind generation in Oklahoma.

http://www.clubic.com/pro/entreprises/g ... lable.html

le chiffre indiqué de "500 centrale à charbon'' est fantaisiste. =;

Google set to reach 100% renewable energy in 2017

December 07, 2016 // By Nick Flaherty

Google (Mountain View, CA) says it is on track to meet its target of powering all its data centers and offices from renewable power by next year.

The majority of the renewable supply comes from wind farms, making Google the largest corporate buyer of renewable power in the world, buying directly from solar and wind farms.

"Our engineers have spent years perfecting Google's data centers, making them 50 percent more energy efficient than the industry average. But we still need a lot of energy to power the products and services that our users depend on," said Urs Hölzle, senior vice president of technical infrastructure at Google.

"In 2017 Google will reach 100% renewable energy for our global operations — including both our data centers and offices. We were one of the first corporations to create large-scale, long-term contracts to buy renewable energy directly; we signed our first agreement to purchase all the electricity from a 114-megawatt wind farm in Iowa, in 2010. Today, we are the world’s largest corporate buyer of renewable power, with commitments reaching 2.6 gigawatts (2,600 megawatts) of wind and solar energy. That’s bigger than many large utilities."

"Over the last six years, the cost of wind and solar came down 60 percent and 80 percent, respectively, proving that renewables are increasingly becoming the lowest cost option. Electricity costs are one of the largest components of our operating expenses at our data centers, and having a long-term stable cost of renewable power provides protection against price swings in energy. To date, our purchasing commitments will result in infrastructure investments of more than $3.5 billion globally, about two-thirds of that in the United States."

This is just the first step, he says. "In the future we may pursue dispatchable, zero-carbon generation energy options for our portfolio. These options could include purchasing energy from technologies like renewables paired with utility-scale energy storage, advanced nuclear power, geothermal energy, low-impact hydro, demand response and energy efficiency resources, or others. Some of these resources are either not mature enough for commercial deployment or not cost-effective at the scale necessary

Facebook buys more wind power

April 10, 2017 evwind

Here’s news we can all “like” today: Facebook announced plans last week to locate its newest data center in rural Nebraska. Thanks to a new renewable energy tariff provided by their future local utility, low-cost wind energy will power 100 percent of the facility.

A big footprint

This will be a big data center. Spread across a 146-acre campus and measuring 970,000 square feet, it will be Facebook’s sixth U.S. data center when it comes online in 2020.

But how will wind power this energy-hungry facility?

Ah enfin, Apple s' y met aussi :
Apple finally jumps on the wind power bandwagon

April 25, 2017 evwind

Over the past few months, we’ve seen big wind energy investments from the likes of GM, Facebook, Home Depot and others. But one of the world’s largest companies, and leading proponents of doing business using 100 percent renewable energy, has been conspicuously absent: Apple.

That finally changed this week.

Apple just announced it has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to buy wind energy from a soon-to-be-built Oregon wind farm. It will power an in-state data center about 130 miles away from the wind farm, and Apple says the project is its largest renewable energy investment to date.

Apple plans to hit its 100 percent renewable energy goal by sourcing renewables through a combination of direct project ownership and long-term contracts with new renewable energy projects, and preferably from projects in the same state as their facilities. When it can’t do either of those, it procures renewable energy from “newer projects in nearby markets… through available utility green energy programs… or [through] strong renewable energy credits (RECs) tied to recently constructed renewable energy projects.”

.......
In its annual environmental progress report, released to coincide with Earth Day, Apple said, “To support our Prineville data center, we recently signed a 200-megawatt power purchase agreement for a new Oregon wind farm, the Montague Wind Power Project, set to come online by the end of 2018.”.......

Microsoft signs one of the largest wind energy deals in the Netherlands with Vattenfall

November 2, 2017 evwind

Microsoft Corp. has announced its second European wind project in the Netherlands with Vattenfall, one of Europe’s largest electricity and heat retail and producers. Microsoft will purchase 100 percent of the wind energy generated from a repowered and expanded wind farm that is adjacent to its local datacenter operations in the Netherlands. The 180-megawatt wind farm will be constructed and operated by Nuon, part of Vattenfall in the Wieringermeer Polder, near Amsterdam.

Vattenfall will begin construction of the expansion in 2018, and expects it to be operational effective 2019. Once completed, the Wieringermeer wind farm will be one of the largest onshore wind farms in the Netherlands, almost three times bigger than the Princess Alexia wind farm inaugurated in 2013.

“We are very glad and proud to be able to support Microsoft’s transition toward using fossil-free energy in its datacenter operations,” said Magnus Hall, president and CEO of Vattenfall. “This deal is completely in line with our strategy to help all our customers power their lives in ever smarter ways and free from fossil fuel within one generation.”

This wind farm will be located adjacent to Microsoft’s Netherlands datacenter operations that serves as a regional hub to deliver Microsoft Cloud services to customers across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, as well as global customers. With the latest expansion completed in 2015, the datacenter is a technologically advanced facility built to reduce water, power and energy use.

The proximity of the wind farm to Microsoft’s datacenters in the Netherlands made it particularly attractive, as this will allow the energy generated from these turbines to directly power the datacenter with local, clean wind energy. Matching production and consumption of renewable energy so closely unlocks great transmission efficiencies.
.....................

This is Microsoft’s second wind energy project in Europe, closely following a new Irish wind farm announced about a month ago,” said Christian Belady, general manager, Microsoft Cloud Infrastructure and Operations, Microsoft. “Once completed, this wind project will bring Microsoft’s total global direct procurement in renewable energy projects to almost 800 megawatts. With these wind projects, we’re making considerable progress against the corporate clean energy commitments we set for ourselves in 2016.”

Wind energy to power Facebook data centre in Nebraska

November 15, 2017 evwind

Enel Green Power North America, Inc. (“EGPNA”), the U.S. renewable energy company of the Enel Group, has started construction of the Rattlesnake Creek wind farm in the United States. Once completed, Rattlesnake Creek will have a total installed capacity of 320 MW and will be Enel’s first wind farm in the state of Nebraska.

“This project consolidates our growing presence in the US as our company enters into a new state and expands our business with new partners,” said Antonio Cammisecra, Head of Enel Green Power. “We are thrilled to be able to support Facebook’s growing renewable energy needs in Nebraska and be a part of driving economic development in the region.”

Investment in the construction of Rattlesnake Creek amounts to an approximate 430 million US dollars and is part of the investment outlined in the Enel Group’s current strategic plan. The project is financed through the Enel Group’s own resources.

A 200 MW portion of the power and renewable energy credits from Rattlesnake Creek will be sold to Facebook under a bundled, long-term power purchase agreement. The wind energy will supply 100% of the power needed to operate Facebook’s new data centre in Papillion, Nebraska, located about 120 miles from the Rattlesnake Creek wind project.

EDF Renewable Energy Signs Agreement with Google to Supply 200 Megawatts of Wind Energy in the United States

December 1, 2017 evwind

EDF Renewable Energy, EDF Energies Nouvelles’ subsidiary in North America, has signed an agreement to supply Google, a subsidiary company of Alphabet with 200 megawatts (MW) of wind energy generated from the new Glaciers Edge Wind Project in Iowa.

Glaciers Edge Wind Project, located in Cherokee County in the northwest portion of the state, is expected to create more than 150 jobs during the construction phase along with millions of dollars injected into the local economy. Once the wind farm comes online, anticipated in December 2019, the additional capacity will help Google reach its goal of purchasing enough renewable energy to match its energy consumption for global operations.
....................

EDF RE and Google forged a relationship in December 2012, when Google made an approximately $200 million equity investment in EDF RE’s Spinning Spur Wind Project, located in Oldham County, Texas. The business partnership progressed in 2016 with the power purchase agreement for the Great Western Wind Project in Oklahoma which supplies Google with 225 MW of clean electricity.

EDF RE is a leading developer among corporate buyers of renewables which demonstrates the trust that sustainability-conscious companies place in EDF RE to deliver value. The Company’s growing North America portfolio of corporate purchasers including Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, Procter & Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, Walmart and Yahoo.

Glaciers Edge will bring the EDF RE’s portfolio of wind project development in Iowa to 1.1 GW.
