The U.S. Just Doubled Its Natural Gas Exports

By Tsvetana Paraskova - Oct 30, 2019

The United States saw its net natural gas exports in the first half of 2019 more than double from the same period last year, thanks to more liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity coming online in recent months, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) says.

Between January and June 2019, U.S. net natural gas exports averaged 4.1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d), more than double the average net exports in 2018, data from EIA’s Natural Gas Monthly showed.

The United States, which exports natural gas via pipelines to neighbors Canada and Mexico and exports LNG to several other countries, became a net natural gas exporter on an annual basis in 2017, for the first time in nearly 60 years.

A large part of the recent increase in U.S. natural gas exports is due to a growing number of LNG facilities coming online. U.S. exports of LNG jumped by 37 percent in the first half of 2019 compared to the first half of 2018, according to EIA data.

As of June this year, the U.S. had a total LNG export capacity of 5.4 Bcf/d across four facilities and nine liquefaction trains, and two additional export facilities have come online in the second half of this year so far—the first train at Freeport LNG in Texas and the first ten trains at Elba Island in Georgia. Together with the completion of Cameron LNG, those two facilities are set to boost America’s LNG export capacity to 8.9 Bcf/d by the end of 2020, EIA says.

The United States will be the global leader in newly-built LNG liquefaction capacity between 2019 and 2023, data and analytics company GlobalData said earlier this month.

Despite the fact that LNG exports surge, most U.S. natural gas trade is being made along the pipelines to Canada and Mexico. U.S. exports to Mexico increased by 5 percent and exports to Canada stayed basically flat in H1 2019.

EIA expects net natural gas exports to continue to increase, due to growing LNG export capacity and more pipelines to Mexico coming online later this year and in 2020.

Tous auTexas.
The U.S. Just Approved Four More LNG Projects

By Tsvetana Paraskova - Nov 21, 2019

The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved on Thursday another four liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects, which will add to the growing American LNG exports in coming years.

FERC approved, with conditions, three projects planned to be located along the Brownsville Ship Channel in Brownsville, Texas—Texas LNG Brownsville, Rio Grande LNG Terminal, and Annova LNG Brownsville—as well as a fourth project to expand an operating facility near Corpus Christi, Texas.

All four projects have applied before the U.S. Department of Energy to be authorized to export gas to countries that don’t have free trade agreements with the United States.

Today’s approvals add to the approval of seven other LNG projects this year.

“The Commission has now completed its work on applications for 11 LNG export projects in the past nine months, helping the United States expand the availability of natural gas for our global allies who need access to an efficient, affordable and environmentally friendly fuel for power generation,” FERC Chairman Neil Chatterjee said in a statement.

The United States will be the global leader in newly built LNG liquefaction capacity between 2019 and 2023, data and analytics company GlobalData said last month. The increase in the U.S. of 157 million tons per year (mtpa) of liquefaction capacity will account for 73 percent of total global LNG capacity growth through 2023, according to GlobalData.

Permian Highway Pipeline Project
New project provides attractive, broad U.S. Gulf Coast market optionality for Permian Basin production

Kinder Morgan Texas Pipeline (KMTP) and EagleClaw Midstream Ventures (EagleClaw), a portfolio company of Blackstone Energy Partners, announced on September 5, 2018 a final investment decision to proceed with the Permian Highway Pipeline Project (PHP Project) after having executed definitive joint venture agreements and having secured sufficient firm transportation agreements with shippers. Subsequently, the partners secured such agreements for all of the remaining pipeline capacity.

Shippers that have committed to the project include EagleClaw, Apache Corporation (Apache), and XTO Energy Inc., a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corporation, amongst others. An affiliate of an anchor shipper exercised its option in January 2019 to acquire a 20 percent equity interest in the project, bringing Kinder Morgan Texas Pipeline’s (KMTP) and EagleClaw Midstream’s ownership interest to 40 percent each. Altus Midstream (a gas gathering, processing and transportation company formed by shipper Apache Corporation) has an option to acquire an equity interest in the project from the initial partners by September 2019. If Altus exercises its option, KMI, EagleClaw and Altus will each hold a 26.67 percent ownership interest in the project.

The approximately $2 billion PHP Project will provide an outlet for increased natural gas production from the Permian Basin to growing market areas along the Texas Gulf Coast. In November 2018, the project partners approved an expansion of the PHP Project capacity by approximately 0.1 Bcf/d, which is currently being marketed. The base project capacity of 2.0 Bcf/d has been fully subscribed. The PHP Project is now designed to transport up to 2.1 Bcf/d of natural gas through approximately 430 miles of 42-inch pipeline from the Waha, Texas area to the U.S. Gulf Coast and Mexico markets. The project is expected to be in service in late 2020, pending regulatory approvals.

U.S. Department of Energy Issues Four LNG Export Approvals

WASHINGTON, D.C. 10 February 2020

Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the issuance of four long-term orders authorizing the export of domestically produced liquefied natural gas (LNG) from four proposed LNG export projects in Texas: Annova LNG, Rio Grande LNG, and Texas LNG, all located in Brownsville, TX; and Corpus Christi LNG’s Stage III in Corpus Christi, TX.

“The Trump Administration recognizes the importance and increasing role U.S. natural gas has in the global energy landscape,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette. “The export capacity of these four projects alone is enough LNG to supply over half of Europe’s LNG import demand. With today’s authorizations, we are paving the way for more U.S. natural gas exports to bring energy security and prosperity to our allies around the world.”

“Approval of these four LNG export authorizations in Texas is another step by the Trump Administration to ensure our country’s energy and national security,” said Under Secretary of Energy Mark W. Menezes. “New LNG authorizations mean new jobs and economic growth in the U.S., as well as the potential for new market opportunities abroad. Ongoing progress to streamline energy infrastructure and project approvals is a hallmark of this Administration.”

Under the orders issued today, the following authorization holders will have the authority to export the volumes of natural gas as LNG in billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) as shown below:

Annova LNG Common Infrastructure, LLC (0.99 Bcf/d)
Rio Grande LNG, LLC (3.61 Bcf/d)
Texas LNG Brownsville, LLC (0.56 Bcf/d)
Corpus Christi Liquefaction Stage III, LLC (1.59 Bcf/d)

Le prix du gaz aux USA sur un plus bas de 20 ans.
Natural Gas Hits Lowest February Price In Two Decades

By Tsvetana Paraskova - Feb 14, 2020

Warmer winter weather this year has reduced U.S. natural gas demand for heating, and as production growth continues to exceed demand growth, U.S. natural gas prices slumped this month to their lowest February levels in two decades, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said on Friday.

Natural gas prices at the Henry Hub benchmark closed at $1.77 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) on Monday, February 10. This was the lowest closing price for a day in February since at least 2001, according to Bloomberg and FRED data compiled by the EIA. The $1.77 per MMBtu price was also the lowest price in any month in nearly four years—since early March 2016.

Natural gas prices dipped to below US$2 per MMBtu this January for the first time in almost four years. This winter season, the glut is further aggravated by higher gas production in the Permian, higher than normal inventories, and warmer weather so far this winter.

Tellurian plans spending cuts as US LNG market turmoil mounts

in General Energy News 04/03/2020

Tellurian will cut spending and try to extend a loan due in May to give it some breathing room, it said Monday, as it appears unlikely the developer will meet a previous target to build sufficient commercial support by the end of this month to advance its Driftwood LNG project in Louisiana.

The disclosures come as LNG markets are hemorrhaging, amid low international prices spurred by a supply glut, weaker than expected demand in key end-user markets and travel restrictions due to the spread of the coronavirus — the respiratory illness first observed in China in December.
