Cinovec Lithium-Tin Project

The Cinovec lithium-tin project is a high-grade underground deposit located in Prague, Czech Republic. It is the biggest lithium deposit in Europe and one of the biggest tin resources being developed in the world.

European Metals Holdings fully owns the project and is also developing it with an investment of £383m ($482m).

Pre-feasibility study for the Cinovec lithium-tin project was completed in April 2017. The average rate of production at the project will be 1.68 million tons per annum (Mtpa), through its anticipated mine life of 21 years.

Cinovec lithium-tin project location, geology, and mineralisation

The Cinovec lithium-tin project is situated approximately 100km to the north-west of Czech Republic’s capital Prague, on the German border.

The deposit is associated with the Cinovec Zinnwald granite cupola and comprises irregular metasomatic greisen, which hosts quartz, zinnwaldite, fluorite, and adularia-K feldspar.

The thin and flat greisen zones enclosing quartz veins that are up to 2m-thick are part of the Cinovec deposit. The minerals contained in the deposit are cassiterite, scheelite, zinnwaldite, and wolframite.

Cinovec lithium-tin project reserves

The Cinovec lithium-tin project is expected to contain probable ore reserves of 34.5Mt graded at 0.65% Li2O and 0.09% Sn.

The indicated and inferred resources are estimated to be 695.9Mt, graded at 0.195% Li. Contained reserves are estimated to be seven million tonnes (Mt) of lithium carbonate-equivalent (LCE), 101,635t of tungsten, and 278,360t of tin.

Mining at Cinovec lithium-tin project

The mining method proposed to be used at the Cinovec lithium-tin project is long hole open stoping method. The ore body of the underground deposit is flat or shallow-dipping and will be mined with pillars support in addition to cement paste back-fill.

The mine will be accessed by two declines, with the first one comprising a conveyor to transport the material from the underground primary crusher to surface. The second decline will be used as a service decline for mineworkers, material, and as an intake airway.

Processing at Cinovec lithium-tin project

The Cinovec lithium-tin project is expected to provide 360,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of mica concentrate to the lithium carbonate and hydroxide plants (LPP).

The processing plant will use a two-stage crushing plant, and screened in a double-deck vibratory screen.

The run-of-mine (ROM) ore will then be passed through a comminution plant for resizing to a particle size distribution (PSD) ideal for lithium recovery.

The product will be then conveyed to the beneficiation plant, which will produce lithium-rich magnetic stream (mica-concentrate) through the separation of paramagnetic zinnwaldite. It will also treat the non-magnetics by-product stream using gravity, flotation, magnetic, and electrostatic separation processes to produce tin and tungsten product.

The concentrate will be mixed with limestone, waste gypsum, and recycled sodium sulphate before roasting to convert the lithium into a lithium potassium sulphate. The product will be then leached to dissolve the contained lithium sulphate values.

Crude lithium carbonate is then precipitated from the purified leach solution through alum precipitation.

The beneficiation plant will also treat the non-magnetics by-product stream with gravity, flotation, magnetic, and electrostatic separation to produce tin and tungsten product.

Potassium sulphate, which is produced as a by-product, will be dried and packed for sale. The battery-grade lithium carbonate will be further processed to produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide.

Infrastructure facilities

The Cinovec lithium-tin project can be accessed through both road and rail. It is located near industrial and chemical plants with support services in Czech and Germany.

The site infrastructure includes a 22kV transmission line, and a well established water and communications network.

Underground infrastructure facilities will include mine service water systems, electrical reticulation system, control systems and instrumentation, trackless workshops, and underground crushers, tips, and conveyors.

Contractors involved

European Metals prepared the project PFS with support from independent consultants such as Widenbar and Associates, Bara Consulting, Ausenco, and Hatch Associates.

Cypress releases positive PFS for Nevada lithium project

Canadian Mining Journal Staff | May 21, 2020

With an initial $493-million investment, Cypress Development‘s Clayton Valley lithium project in Nevada could produce 27,400 tonnes lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) per year over a 40-year mine life, according to a prefeasibility study released this week.
...............

Reserves at Clayton Valley are contained in a leachable lithium-bearing claystone.

The deposit is large, at surface, and flat-lying, which will allow for a very low strip ratio (0.15:1) and means no drilling or blasting is necessary in mining. The study envisions a mining rate of 15,000 t/d.

The project is located next to North America’s only lithium brine operation, the Albemarle Silver Peak mine.

The lithium in the deposit is amenable to leaching with dilute sulphuric acid leach followed by filtration, solution purification, concentration, and electrolysis to produce lithium hydroxide.

Cypress reports that metallurgical leach tests have demonstrated an average of 86.5% extraction of lithium into solution and 126.5 kg/t for acid consumption.

Metallurgical testing indicates low-cost processing can be achieved by leaching with low acid consumption and high lithium recovery.

Self-generated power from a 2,500 t/d acid plant is included in the project’s costs.

The Vancouver-based junior says testing to recover the lithium from solution has been successful, with the production of a concentrated lithium solution suitable for producing lithium hydroxide.

Before moving to the feasibility and permitting stage, the next step for Cypress will be a pilot plant study, estimated to cost $6.75 million.

Production figures are based on a probable reserve of 222 million tonnes grading 1,141 ppm lithium for 1.4 million tonnes LCE, calculated at a 900 ppm lithium cutoff grade.

Coronavirus halts lithium expansion in Argentina and Chile
Projects under development halted and significant investments cancelled, as impact of Covid-19 pandemic begins to hit home.

Despite expectations of greater development, the lithium sector in Argentina and Chile is being slowed by the coronavirus. Projects under development have been halted by the mandatory quarantine, while significant investments have already been cancelled.

Argentina, Bolivia and Chile are part of the so-called “lithium triangle” of South America, a region with some of the world’s highest concentrations of the metal. It is central to the expansion of electric vehicles, the demand for which is expected to increase in the coming years.

Due to the quarantine measures, lithium production is expected to drop globally by 110,000 tonnes this year, representing a loss of US$960 million, according to English consultancy Roskill. In Argentina, production is expected to drop 35 percent, and in Chile by 20 percent.

On top of live projects slowing down, planned investments have been delayed or cancelled, in several cases by Chinese companies. China is the world’s leading consumer of lithium, primarily for battery manufacturing.

While Chile is a mining country with extensive development and exports of US$40,000 million per year in minerals, Argentina still has an incipient mining development – with exports of US$3.7 billion. The government is seeking further development and hopes that lithium will do just that.

“Lithium production is highly vulnerable to the kinds of disruptions a pandemic like coronavirus can cause,” said Emily Hersh, an economist specialising in the lithium market. “Quarantine is going to affect the industry generally.”

https://www.agenceecofin.com/metaux/280 ... 9-millions

Bacanora Lithium to reopen plant at Sonora project

Cecilia Jamasmie | May 29, 2020

Exploration and development company Bacanora Lithium (LON:BCN) announced it expects to reopen the Hermosillo pilot plant at its flagship Sonora lithium project in Mexico next month.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the company said it was continuing to progress all feasible workstreams, with significant attention focused on completing work at Sonora.

Bacanora also said the project review by strategic partner Ganfeng Lithium is now scheduled for the third quarter of the year. Previously it was expected to be completed in the first six months of 2020.

The delay may not impact the overall project timeline, Bacanora said. However, Ganfeng’s timing of an engineering, procurement and construction proposal for the production of downstream battery-grade lithium products from the Sonora plant is also under review.

The company said it anticipates lithium demand to grow by 800% by 2030, thanks to increased electric vehicles (EV) demand.

“Whilst demand for internal combustion vehicles has been significantly impacted by the spread of covid-19 and a general economic slowdown, electric vehicle demand in Europe increased over 50% during first quarter [of] 2020,” Bacanora said in a media release.

Bacanora now expects to kick off site works in the first half of 2021. This would allow the miner to begin lithium deliveries to its offtake partners, Ganfeng Lithium and Hanwa Corp, in 2023.

The company, however, has yet to secure full financing for construction of project, which is expected to produce 35,000 tonnes of lithium per year.

Prices for lithium are expected to climb in two years, when shortages in the market caused by curtailed production and halted expansions start to emerge.

Keliber books Outotec for basic engineering of Päiväneva lithium concentrator

Posted by Paul Moore on 30th

Image

On June 29, 2020, just before the combination of Metso and Outotec to become Metso Outotec, Finnish hard rock lithium ore to battery grade lithium hydroxide project developer Keliber and mineral processing technology provider Outotec signed an agreement regarding the basic engineering of Keliber’s Päiväneva concentrator. Outotec will design the concentrator process and process equipment for the production flow sheet: ore crushing, sorting, grinding and concentration.

The basic engineering of the concentrator is based on the new location of the concentrator next to the main mining sites. Design criteria include environmental, social and economic parameters which will be incorporated in the solution for the concentrator. “We can confidently continue to promote our project with a reliable partner for the concentrator engineering. At the same time, Outotec will provide Keliber with valuable information for the EIA process and the environmental permit”, says Hannu Hautala, CEO of Keliber Oy.

During the first months of 2020, Keliber continued its work towards battery-grade lithium hydroxide production for the needs of the growing international market. To demonstrate the functionality of the production process, a continuous lithium hydroxide pilot was carried out at the Outotec R&D centre. The purity of the product received was extremely high and lithium recovery in the process was better than the one used in the Definitive Feasibility Study in February 2019.

Keliber will operate initially the surface Rapasaari and Syvajarvi lithium (spodumene) mines and the Päiväneva concentrator plant all located some 10 km from Kaustinen. The Päiväneva plant will produce spodumene concentrate and the chemical plant will be located slightly over 50 km away in the Kokkola Industrial Park, near the Port of Kokkola – this location will see the heat treatment and hydrometallurgical processing of the spodumene concentrate to produce lithium hydroxide up to the final product packaging and shipping. Keliber has also opted to increase its annual lithium hydroxide production from 12,500 t to 15,000 t. Construction of the project is now set to start in 2022.

Last December, Keliber reported that it had reached 96.9% conversion degree in a continuous conversion pilot conducted with FLSmidth using a rotary kiln and spodumene concentrate produced from Syvajarvi lithium ore. FLSmidth has been selected for the rotary kiln basic engineering, with Outotec doing the basic engineering for the Kokkola chemical plant.

Cornish Lithium, a start-up hoping to lead the development of an industry for the battery metal in the UK, has raised £826,000 ($1.03 million) from shareholders, which it says it will use to expand ongoing drilling work.

The miner says recent exploration activity in the ancient mining region of Cornwall, south-west England, has proved “highly encouraging.”

The company will now plan further phases of drilling in both geothermal waters and in hard rock, to begin as soon as “current conditions allow.”

Market research firm Roskill has published an analysis where it reports that Sigma Lithium Resources’ (TSX-V: SGMA) $45 million finance by Societe Generale for its Grota do Cirilo project in Brazil sent a positive message about the state of the lithium industry.

The announcement was made in late June and it marked a second green funding success in as many weeks for the lithium sector, following on from Livent’s $225 million green debt facility.

“With an interest rate of US LIBOR plus 5%, dropping to LIBOR plus 4.5% after completion of the project, this deal highlights the relatively low-cost access to capital lithium producers can gain, even in a tough market, by leveraging the green credentials of their product (which can be used in the production of rechargeable batteries),” the report reads.

“In the case of Sigma, these green credentials have been bolstered by its access to hydro-power (reducing its scope 2 GHG emissions) and its wider Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) focused development of the project, which has helped it meet the EPs.”

According to Roskill, Sigma’s financing package includes environmental and social covenants following the Equator Principles, which are a set of voluntary guidelines adopted by private financial institutions to ensure that large-scale development or construction projects appropriately consider the associated potential impacts on the natural environment and any affected communities.

The package will be supplemented by a production prepayment facility signed with Mitsui & Co in April 2019 and an approximate $10-million equity contribution, which is required to satisfy the funding package.

Located in Minas Gerais, Brazil, the Grota do Cirilo project is initially expected to produce 220ktpy of 6% Li2O spodumene concentrate from the Xuxa deposit. The construction capital cost for the project is currently estimated at $82 million.
