ExxonMobil Cuts $10B from 2020 Capex

by Matthew V. Veazey|Rigzone Staff|Wednesday, April 08, 2020

Low commodity prices stemming from the oversupply and sagging demand tied to the COVID-19 pandemic have prompted Exxon Mobil Corp. to cut its 2020 capital spending by 30 percent and cash operating expenses by 15 percent, the supermajor reported Tuesday.

ExxonMobil’s approximately $10 billion reduction in capital spending translates into a revised 2020 capex investment plan totaling $23 billion, the firm revealed in a written statement. The company did not specify a dollar value regarding the cash operating expense cuts.

“We are not providing that level of detail,” an ExxonMobil spokesperson told Rigzone regarding the opex reduction.
.............

ExxonMobil stated that it will assign the largest share of its capex cuts to the Permian Basin, with short-cycle investments that can be readily adjusted based on market conditions. The company pointed out that reduced activity will influence the pace of drilling and well completions until market conditions improve.

Exxon Forced To Delay Key Refinery Expansion Due To Low Fuel Demand

By Charles Kennedy - Jun 12, 2020

Exxon will postpone the start of expansion works at its Beaumont refinery in Texas because of still slow demand for fuels, Bloomberg reported, citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation.

The expansion was to be completed by 2022 but now the deadline has been moved to a year later. This will give Beaumont a capacity of some 619,000 barrels daily and will make it the largest oil refinery in the United States, overtaking the Port Arthur facility operated by Aramco.

The expansion was conceived of as a way to utilize Exxon’s growing production from the Permian: the company planned to add a 250,000-bpd unit specifically to process the light, sweet crude from the shale play. However, now the outlook for demand for this growing production is too negative to merit a refinery expansion. The Beaumont facility is currently running at reduced rates because of the slump in demand for gasoline in jet fuel.

Exxon Loses World No 2 Energy Firm Title

by Bloomberg|Debjit ChakrabortyMonday, July 27, 2020

Reliance Industries Ltd. toppled Exxon Mobil Corp. to become the world’s largest energy company after Saudi Aramco, as investors piled into the conglomerate lured by the Indian firm’s digital and retail forays.

Reliance, which is controlled by Asia’s richest man and manages the world’s biggest oil refinery complex, rose 4.3% in Mumbai on Friday, taking its market value to $189 billion, while Exxon Mobil lost about $1 billion. Aramco, with a market capitalization of $1.75 trillion, is the world’s biggest company.

Exxon Gets Kicked Out Of The Dow Jones Industrial Average

By Irina Slav - Aug 25, 2020

Exxon is being kicked out of the Dow Jones Industrial Average index, where it has had a place since 1928. The reason: the Dow needed to make space for other, more valuable companies—and Apple’s stock split, CBS News reports.

The change will be effective on August 31.

Exxon, which was the oldest member of the index for the last two years after Dow removed GE, has been one of the most valuable companies in the U.S. and the world for decades. That is until Big Tech showed up and began changing the world, its stock reflecting this change by swelling market caps.

When Apple recently passed the $2-trillion valuation mark for a few hours, it became the most valuable company in the world.

Meanwhile, Big Oil—and Exxon specifically—hasn’t been faring all that well. Energy, which featured solidly on the index and in people’s lives a few decades ago, is being booted out by technology—Exxon’s replacement on the DJIA is a software company, Salesforce.

And then there is the climate change narrative and the accusations that Exxon knew about it but did not do anything about it. And it is not doing anything about it still, according to critics, unlike European supermajors, which are all but racing towards renewables.

Meanwhile, the double blow from the Saudi price war and the pandemic hit the world's largest public oil company hard. Exxon reported two quarterly losses this year, blaming oil prices and the effect of the pandemic on oil’s fundamentals. It is reducing its production in the face of lower demand and adjusting its spending plans like its peers to weather the worst of the crisis.

In the end, however, it is just about its share price. At a little over $42 a piece at the time of writing, Exxon is just too cheap for the DJIA, cheaper than the only other remaining energy company on the index: Chevron. Chevron is trading above $82 per share.

Chinese Oil Giant Could Buy Exxon's North Sea Assets

By Irina Slav - Sep 22, 2020

Sinopec and a private equity-backed company are among some half a dozen candidates to acquire Exxon’s North Sea assets that the supermajor put up for sale earlier this year.

Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration, Siccar Point, and Tailwind Energy—in partnership with Mercuria—are also among the bidders, Bloomberg reports, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

Reports of the planned sale emerged in June, but the first mention of Exxon’s plans to exit the legacy oil producing region surfaced in August 2019. In that, the U.S. supermajor followed in the footsteps of other large oil companies from the States, while European majors have stayed on. For Exxon, the sale follows a wider exit from Europe, that also saw it leave Norway, after selling its asset there for $4.5 billion to Var Energi.

Exxon’s plans got delayed by oil prices but this year, after benchmarks crashed to the lowest in years, it likely decided to cut its losses. A sale of all its assets in the North Sea in 2019 was estimated to bring in as much as $2 billion but now that the oil demand outlook has grimed considerably, the price tag may be lower. There was no mention of price or value in the Bloomberg report.

According to it, Exxon would be selling stakes in 15 fields, which would this year contribute a combined 37,000 bpd to the company’s total output. Two exploration blocks and Exxon’s stakes in pipeline networks in the region are also on the table. Binding bids are due next month and the sale is seen getting finalized in the first quarter of next year.

The number of bidders is a positive surprise: earlier this year, when media first reported about the planned sale, there were doubts Exxon would find buyers given the market environment and the outlook for the industry. Yet the North Sea appears to maintain a stable interest among some sector players on the lookout for bargains.

Exxon To Cut 1,900 Jobs In The U.S.

By Tsvetana Paraskova - Oct 29 2020.

ExxonMobil said on Thursday that it will cut around 1,900 jobs in the United States in its latest attempt to cut costs and protect its balance sheet amid low oil prices and weak global oil demand due to the pandemic.

“As part of an extensive global review announced earlier this year, the company plans to reduce staffing levels in the United States, primarily at its management offices in Houston, Texas. The company anticipates approximately 1,900 employees will be affected through voluntary and involuntary programs,” Exxon said in a statement on Thursday, a day before it is set to announce its Q3 earnings and a day after it kept its quarterly dividend flat for the first time since 1982.

Exxon has already said it would cut 1,600 jobs in Europe as part of efforts to rein in costs.

Announcing the cuts in the United States, the supermajor said today that “These actions will improve the company’s long-term cost competitiveness and ensure the company manages through the current unprecedented market conditions. The impact of COVID-19 on the demand for ExxonMobil’s products has increased the urgency of the ongoing efficiency work.”

After the press release announcing the job cuts, shares in Exxon (NYSE: XOM) climbed by 2.57 percent as of 12:21 EDT, even though oil prices were down by 4 percent at the same time.

On Wednesday, ExxonMobil said it was keeping its quarterly fourth-quarter dividend flat at $0.87 per share – the first time in 38 years that the company has failed to increase the dividend it has been paying for more than 100 years.

Exxon is set to report on Friday its third straight loss in its upstream business this year, as lower oil demand continues to hurt oil companies’ profitability.

For the second quarter, Exxon reported at the end of July its second consecutive quarterly loss, which was the worst loss for the U.S. supermajor in its modern history.
