Sasol to boost Mozambique natural gas production

16 April 2009

MAPUTO (AFP) —

South African petrochemical firm Sasol has reached a deal with Mozambique to increase natural gas production at the company's Mozambican facilities by 53 percent, state media reported Thursday.

Of the extra 63 million gigajoules of gas that Sasol expects to produce per year, 27 million will be exported to South Africa, 27 million will fuel a planned Mozambican power plant and nine million will be used for other local projects, Noticias newspaper said.

Mozambique is in the planning stages of a 1.3-billion-dollar gas-fired power plant with 680 megawatts of capacity, to be built in the town of Moamba, 60 kilometres (35 miles) northwest of Maputo.

Eskom, energy-hungry South Africa's public utility company, has expressed interest in buying electricity from the Moamba facility.

Mozambique and South Africa in 2004 completed a 1.2-billion-dollar, 865-kilometre gas pipeline, enabling Sasol to transport gas to South Africa from its Inhambane fields in southwest Mozambique.

Australia's Riversdale hits second huge coal deposit in Mozambique

Wed, 14 Oct 2009

Maputo - Australia's Riversdale Mining on Wednesday announced the discovery of over 1.5 billion tonnes of coal deposits in Mozambique, its second-largest coal find in the southern African country, local media reported Wednesday. The coal, which covers an area spanning 14 kilometres and weighing some 1.7 billion tonnes in total, was discovered near the Zambezi river, the company said.

Based on samples extracted by the company over a 12-month period, the Zambezi project has the potential to generate metallurgical coal and thermal coal, a by-product, for export to African, American and Asian markets, Riversdale says.

The central Zambezi project is similar to Riversdale's Benga project in northern Tete province, which has estimated reserves of 4 billion tonnes of the mineral.

"A second metallurgic coal project of this magnitude positions our company as the preferential supplier to the steel industry in markets in expansion like Brazil and India," Riversdale CEO Michael O'Keeffe was quoted by local newspapers as saying.

In recent years resource-rich Mozambique has attracted huge foreign investment in exploration for gas, oil, and other commodities.

The investment has fuelled strong growth in the former Portugese colony of around 20 million people, which is still recovering from a devastating 16-year civil war between 1976 and 1992.

Brazil invests $6b in biofuels in Mozambique

Africa is increasingly becoming attractive to investors in alternative energy sources, especially biofuels.

One of the numerous African countries including Ghana to sign deals with Brazil, a global biofuels industry leader for the cultivation of sugar cane for the production of ethanol is Mozambique.

The Bloomberg news reports that Mozambique has signed two agreements with Brazil for a $6 billion biofuel exploration.

The Bloomberg quoting an independent Mozambican daily O Pais says some of the biofuel to be produced will be exported to Brazil.

Meanwhile, about $256 million has been invested in the biofuels sector in Mozambique.

Several European and US companies, including Brazil and some Asian countries are investing in Ghana to cultivate sugar cane and especially Jatropha, the non-food crop for the production of biofuels.

Despite the growing interest in the biofuels sector in Ghana however, the country does not have a biofuels policy.

Anadarko Blazes Offshore Trail With Windjammer Find

18 février 2010 BMI Industry Insights

US independent Anadarko Petroleum has added another discovery to its deepwater success tally, striking 366 metres (m) of gross gas pay off Mozambique. Although the commerciality of the find is yet to be established, the Windjammer-1 well represents the first major hydrocarbon discovery offshore East Africa.

The Windjammer-1 well, located in 1,460m of water, hit hydrocarbons at a depth of 4,270m in Area 1 of the frontier Rovuma Basin, about 48km off Mozambique's northern coast, Anadarko announced on February 18. The Texas-based company said it will drill a further 1,250m at Windjammer-1 to obtain additional data before moving the drillship to the nearby Collier prospect. Having hit dust with its first Mozambique well, Mecupa-1, in October 2009, Anadarko's perseverance in the frontier region appears to be paying off. The company plans to drill a total of three to five wells in Rovuma this year.

Having won the licence for the Rovuma Area 1 in 2006 under Mozambique's second licensing round, Anadarko operates the permit with a 43% stake, working alongside London-based Cove Energy, Japanese conglomerate Mitsui (23.5%), Indian companies Bharat Petroleum (11.75%) and Videocon (11.75%), and state energy company Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH, 15% interest carried through the exploration phase).
The Windjammer success solidifies Anadarko's status as an important deepwater player, adding to seven discoveries made off the US Gulf coast, Sierra Leone and Brazil in 2009. As with its Venus discovery off Sierra Leone, Windjammer could open up a new African oil province, spurring greater exploration activity off Mozambique.

Anadarko's drilling campaign will be keenly followed by offshore experts Petronas, Statoil and Eni, the other winners of Rovuma acreage in Mozambique's second licensing round. While the country's onshore acreage presents some scope for output growth, it is its offshore areas that offer the most upside reserve potential. In terms of production, the government plans to raise gas output from 3.3bn cubic metres (bcm) in 2008 to 4.7bcm by 2011. Initially, rising gas volumes will be used to feed growing domestic demand, with the surplus exported to South Africa along an existing pipeline.

Australian firm signs contract to process coal in Mozambique

Milton, Australia, 15 June

Australian company Sedgman has signed a contract worth US$80 million for construction of a mineral coal processing unit in Benga, Tete province, northern Mozambique, the company said in a statement.

According to the statement published on its website, the contract was signed with Riversdale Moçambique, a partnership of Australian group Riversdale Mining, with a 65 percent stake, and India's Tata Steel, with the remaining 35 percent.

Sedgman also said that, with this new contract, the company now had contracts at the Benga coal project worth a total of US$143 million.

The coal processing unit to be built by Sedgman will process around 5.3 million tons of ROM coal per year and produce approximately 1.7 million tons of high quality metallurgic coal and 0.3 million tons of thermal coal per year.

Last May, Riversdale Mining announced that confirmed reserves at the Benga project had risen 84 percent, with total estimated reserves now standing at 4 billion tons. (macauhub)

China invests $1bn in Mozambique coal

By Richard Lapper in Johannesburg

Published: June 24 2010

China has deepened its interest in Mozambique’s natural resources, agreeing to invest $1bn in a coal project.

Wuhan Iron and Steel, one of China’s biggest steel producers, will spend $200m (€163m, £134m) on an 8 per cent share of Riversdale, a listed Australian company developing coalfields in Mozambique’s Tete province. Wuhan will commit an extra $800m to the Zambeze coal reserve.

The deal extends the interest of big emerging market steel producers in Riversdale. India’s Tata Steel already owns a 22 per cent stake in Riversdale and Brazil’s CSN has 16 per cent of the company.

Riversdale’s coal reserves in the two concessions areas of Benga and Zambeze come to more than 13bn tonnes and count among the world’s largest untapped reserves of coking and thermal coal. Coking coal is used to make steel, while power plants provide a market for thermal coal.

Vale, the Brazilian company and the world’s largest iron ore miner, is the other big name in Tete and expects to start extracting coal from a giant opencast pit later this year.

It had been expected that Riversdale and Vale would sell some coal to China on long-term contracts but Wuhan’s investment marks the first time that Chinese investment is being channelled directly into coal production.

“The Chinese have been scouting around for coal in the region,” said Martyn Davies, chief executive of Frontier Advisory, a consultancy. “China really lacks supplies of good quality coking coal.”

China could also help develop transport corridors needed to move the coal from Tete to the ports of Beira and Nacala on the Indian Ocean. As well as its deal with Wuhan, Riversdale signed a logistics partnership with the China Communications Construction Company. It is expected that CCCC could help Riversdale with the work needed to carry coal on barges down the Zambezi river.

Wuhan will buy about 40 per cent of the coking coal produced from Zambeze, and the company will have the right to purchase at least 10 per cent of that produced from the neighbouring Benga project.

Coal production in Mozambique set to rise by 1,000 pct this year

Maputo, Mozambique, 8 March

Growth in coal production this year in Mozambique is expected to see growth of over 1,000 percent, according to the economic and social plan of the Mozambican government.

The expected growth is considered to be the biggest seen in the last few years and will be due to international companies becoming involved in coal mining, mainly in Tete province, including Brazil’s Vale and Australia’s Riversdale Mining.

Production for this year is estimated at 2 million tons, 750,000 tons of which will be coking coal, mined at Moatize, which is the coal district par excellence in Mozambique.

In Benga, Riversdale Mining expects to produce approximately 1 million tons of coking coal and 180,000 tons of thermal coal.

Based on growth rates in the coal sector, exports are this year expected to post growth of just over 20 percent

Mozambique should soon be a “substantial” exporter of natural gas

August 8th, 2011

London, United Kingdom, 8 Aug – Mozambique should soon become a “substantial” exporter of natural gas with the planned construction of an LNG terminal in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, the Economist Intelligence Unit indicates.

Gas discoveries over the last year in the region by the US company Anadarko Petroleum should serve to confirm the viability of developing a liquid natural gas (LNG) terminal, the EIU asserts in its most recent report on Mozambique.

Unconfirmed estimates cited by the Economist indicate minimum reserves of 10 trillion cubic feet (more than 283 billion cubic metres) of natural gas, “many times more than Mozambique’s only currently producing gas field” in Pande/Temane in the southern province of Inhambane.

“Production (from Pande/Temane) is exported to South Africa via a gas pipeline. (But) the natural gas deposits in Cabo Delgado are too far from that pipeline and industrial end users in the region,” the report states.

“This situation suggests that an LNG unit to access the international export market is the only realistic option to develop” the newly discovered fields, it adds.

With this project, Mozambique “may become a substantial exporter” of natural gas, the report indicates.

[edit a 17h]
........

Eni says Mozambique natural gas discovery 50 percent larger than previously announced

MILAN — The Italian gas and oil company Eni says that a gas discovery off the coast of Mozambique is 50 percent larger than previous announced.

Eni said in a statement Thursday that it now expects to find a total of 22.5 trillion cubic feet of gas in the Mamba South 1, Area 4. Earlier it has said that the well would yield 15 trillion cubic feet.

Eni said the increase was due to the discovery of a new pool.

Eni said it will later move to drill the Mamba North 1 well, located about 22 kilometers (14 miles) north of the current discovery.

Analysts had already said that the 15 trillion cubic feet was a “significant” discovery, making Mozambique an important regional liquefied natural gas producer.
