U.S. Ethanol Production Nearing One Million Barrels Per Day

Saturday, 13 November 2010

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports for August that U.S. ethanol production rose in August to an all-time high, production averaged more than 869,000 barrels per day (b/d). The Renewable Fuels Association who also collects data calculated ethanol demand at all-time high as well at 911,000 b/d in August, up from 734,000 b/d a year ago.

The U.S. is closing in on the million barrel per day milestone. Cheers in some sections, groans in others, but for America, slashing off the equivalent of 750,000 b/d of imported oil is a good thing

EPA Permits 15% Ethanol for Cars Made After 2001

The Environmental Protection Agency granted a request from ethanol producers to raise the amount of the corn-based additive in gasoline for vehicles made for the 2001 model year and later.

Refiners will be permitted to add as much as 15 percent ethanol, up from 10 percent, the EPA said in an e-mailed statement. The agency in October allowed the 15 percent blend for vehicles made for 2007 and later.

“Wherever sound science and the law support steps to allow more home-grown fuels in America’s vehicles, this administration takes those steps,” EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said in the statement.

The EPA has been pressed by advocates for the ethanol industry to raise the limit to increase demand. U.S. carmakers and engine manufacturers last month asked an appeals court to force the agency to reconsider its October ruling.

Oil companies, automakers and environmental groups say increasing ethanol in fuel may damage engines, boost food prices and worsen air quality, and refiners and convenience stores that sell fuel may be reluctant to market the new blend.

“EPA continues to move in the right direction with respect to increasing ethanol blends, but challenges still remain,” Bob Dinneen, president of the Renewable Fuels Association, said in an e-mailed statement. “The RFA continues to urge EPA to extend the waiver for E-15 use to all cars and pickups.”

Consumption Boost

Growth Energy, a Washington-based ethanol trade group, submitted the request to lift a so-called blend wall on March 29 to help boost consumption for an industry that saw at least a dozen companies seek bankruptcy protection in an 18-month period.

Agency to also register E15 gasoline in spring

* E15 likely to be available nationwide this summer

* 74 percent of cars, trucks now on roads can use E15

By Tom Doggett

WASHINGTON, March 10 (Reuters) - Gasoline containing up to 15 percent ethanol should be available for the coming summer driving season as the government moves to finalize labeling and other issues for the new motor fuel.

The Environmental Protection Agency approved in January raising the amount of ethanol in gasoline to 15 percent for newer cars and trucks from 10 percent, a ruling welcomed by the industry and by farmers who supply the corn to make the fuel.

The government will finalize in a few months the labels on the gasoline pumps, which are designed to protect consumers from using the fuel in unapproved engines, the head of the EPA told Congress on Thursday

White House clears new label for E15 gasoline pumps

Jun 9, 2011 REUTERS

The White House has signed off on a new gasoline pump label that would warn consumers when they are about to fill their vehicles with a fuel blended with a higher rate of ethanol.

The Environmental Protection Agency approved raising the ethanol levels in gasoline to 15 percent from 10 percent for newer cars and trucks in January, a move welcomed by the ethanol industry and by farmers who supply the corn to make the fuel.

The new label means the so-called E15 gasoline could be available nationwide by the end of September, according to Growth Energy, the pro-ethanol trade group.

The EPA still has to officially register E15 before it can be sold.

It is unclear how fast E15 gasoline will be adopted by service station owners as they would have to invest in new pumps and separate storage tanks. Many stations will continue to sell E10 gasoline, which can be used in all makes of vehicles.

The National Association of Convenience Stores and the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America, whose members sell about 80 percent of the gasoline in the U.S., sent a joint letter to EPA two weeks ago opposing the new label.

The groups said retailers selling E15 could be held liable for damages if consumers inadvertently put the fuel in the wrong engines.

E15 is approved for vehicles built since 2001, a fleet of 150 million cars and trucks that consumes 74 percent of U.S. gasoline production.

-for-feed/
........Over the past year, U.S. farmers used 5 billion bushels of corn for animal feed and residual demand. During the time timeframe, the nation used more than 5.05 billion bushels of corn to fill its gas tanks.

US ethanol production hits record 954,000 b/d in week that ended Friday: EIA

Houston (Platts) 7 Dec2 011

US ethanol production hit 954,000 b/d in the week that ended Friday, the highest level on record, and a 24,000 b/d week-on-week rise, data released by the US Energy Information Administration showed Wednesday.

The previous high of 939,000 b/d was set in December 2010. The total for the most recent week was also up 15,000 b/d compared with the same week a year earlier, the data showed.

US fuel ethanol stocks totaled 17.9 million barrels in the week that ended Friday, an increase of 854,000 barrels compared with a week earlier, the agency said.

The stock increase was largely based upon a rise in Gulf Coast totals, which jumped from 3.1 millions barrels in the week that ended November 25 to 3.7 million barrels on Friday, the EIA said.

US ends ethanol tax subsidies

January 3, 2012

WASHINGTON: A federal tax credit for ethanol has expired, ending an era in which the federal government provided more than $US20 billion in subsidies for use of the product.

The tax break, created more than 30 years ago, had long seemed untouchable. But in the past year, during which Congress was preoccupied with deficits and debt, it became a symbol of corporate welfare.

Fiscal conservatives joined liberal environmentalists to kill it, with help from a diverse coalition of outside groups.

The tax credit, which cost the government nearly $US6 billion in 2011, went to refiners that mixed ethanol with petrol.

In the US, most ethanol is produced from corn. The demise of the subsidy is all the more remarkable because it comes at the height of the political season in Iowa, where corn is king.

''We are in a fairly prosperous period for agriculture,'' a former president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association, Dean Taylor, said. ''Agriculture has not been as much of a touchstone for presidential candidates this time around.''

Almost 40 per cent of the corn crop goes to produce ethanol and byproducts, including animal feed.

The Government Accountability Office, an investigative arm of Congress, said: ''The increasing demand for corn for ethanol production has contributed to higher corn prices.''

The higher prices have ''created additional income for corn producers'' but also appear to have increased costs to meat and poultry producers, big food companies, shoppers and federal food programs, the office said.

Michal Rosenoer, a policy analyst with the environmental group Friends of the Earth, said: ''The end of this giant subsidy is a win for taxpayers, the environment and people struggling to put food on the table.''

US ethanol production almost 14 billion gallons in 2011

Monthly ethanol production data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows American ethanol producers supplied a record 13.948 billion gallons (332.11 million barrels) in calendar year 2011. That is an increase from 13.231 billion gallons in 2010.

Strong production in the ending months of 2011 helped push domestic ethanol production to these record levels and outpace the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) requirement for renewable fuel of 13.2 billion gallons for 2011. December production was a new monthly record of 29.772 million barrels. As the RFA previously reported, the U.S. exported a record 1.19 billion gallons of denatured and undenatured ethanol in 2011.

“Ethanol producers have clearly shown their ability to innovate and evolve to meet the renewable energy demands of the nation, and increasingly, the world,” said Renewable Fuels Association President and CEO Bob Dinneen. “With increasing volumes of ethanol expected to come from additional sources like grasses, ag wastes, and garbage, we must commit to opening American fuel markets to higher level ethanol blends and giving consumers a truer choice at the pump. Blends like E15, as well as E20, E30, and E85 offer safe, cost-effective, and domestic opportunities to further reduce our reliance on imported oil.”
