SunPower shines as demand for solar panels grows
Posted: 30 Oct /2013 SAN JOSE
SunPower, Silicon Valley's dominant solar panel manufacturer, reported stronger revenue and a better-than-expected third-quarter profit Wednesday.
The company brought in third-quarter revenue of $657 million, up from $649 million from the third quarter last year, thanks to strong demand in the United States and Japan. SunPower also announced plans to build a new factory in Asia, slated to come online in early 2015, that will expand solar cell manufacturing capacity by 350 megawatts.
"Japan is expanding rapidly, China is becoming the number one market in the world and the North American solar lease is on fire," said CEO Tom Werner in an interview. "Solar is going mainstream, and we've just crested the surface."
Net income was $108.4 million, or 73 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $48.5 million, or 41 cents per share, a year ago.
SunPower, which is majority-owned by French oil giant Total, designs and manufactures high-efficiency solar cells and solar panels for residential, commercial and utility clients in California and abroad. SunPower reported Wednesday that it has now sold roughly 20,000 residential leases, which offer homeowners rooftop solar power for no money down.
SunPower is providing panels for both the 579-megawatt Solar Star projects in Kern and Los Angeles counties for MidAmerican Solar, and the California Valley Solar Ranch project, owned by NRG Energy, which should begin commercial operations within months.
Japan, which has seen renewed government support for solar in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, continues to be a strong market, with SunPower signing supply agreements totaling more than 90 megawatts for two power plant projects. SunPower is also bullish on emerging markets like Chile as it seeks to grow its pipeline of international projects.
Most of SunPower's solar panels are manufactured at factories in the Philippines and Malaysia, but it has a small domestic solar manufacturing facility in Milpitas, which recently celebrated production of the 500,000th solar panel.
One megawatt is enough to power about 750 to 1,000 homes. But because the sun doesn't shine all the time, solar industry experts typically use a conservative figure and say that 1 megawatt of solar power capacity is sufficient to power about 200 households.
