Technip Energies Bags FEED Contract for Viking CCS in UK
by Rocky Teodoro|Rigzone Staff|Friday, February 02, 2024
Technip Energies NV has secured a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the Viking Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in the United Kingdom (UK) led by Harbour Energy and BP plc.
Technip Energies, supported by its subsidiary Genesis, will provide FEED services for the carbon dioxide transportation system, including the CO2 handling station, onshore and offshore pipeline, and a NPAI (Not Permanently Attended Installation) platform, the company said in a news release Thursday.
The Viking CCS initiative is a project focused on the transportation and storage of captured carbon dioxide in the depleted Viking gas fields. The project aims to reduce UK emissions by 10 million metric tons annually by 2030, increasing to 15 million metric tons per year by 2035. Located in the Humber, the most industrialized area of the UK with its biggest source of carbon dioxide emissions, the project is expected to play a pivotal role in creating a globally leading CCS sector in the UK, contributing to the government’s target of net zero emissions by 2050, according to the release.
“We are proud to be supporting the UK’s transition to a more sustainable future. Our involvement in the Viking CCS project will help reduce the UK’s carbon emissions and emphasizes our commitment to sustainable energy solutions”, Technip Energies SVP Charles Cessot said. “We are excited to collaborate with Harbour Energy and contribute our expertise in FEED services to this initiative”.
“We’re delighted to be working with Technip Energies to help deliver another important milestone for the Viking CCS project”, Harbour Energy’s Viking CCS Project Director Graeme Davies said. The Humber region has long been a global leader in the energy sector, and Viking CCS will help to protect around 20,000 jobs in local industries, while also creating up to 10,000 jobs during construction across all Cluster projects”.
“After three years in development, the Viking CCS project is now entering the FEED phase”, Jim Todd, BP JV Manager for Viking CCS, said. “This is a significant step in the journey of any project, and we are excited to welcome Technip Energies as the FEED contractor, paving the way for large-scale CCS in the South Humber and North Lincolnshire region”.
Carbon Capture Pilot Units
In November, Technip Energies and its wholly-owned Norwegian affiliate KANFA completed the engineering, procurement, and fabrication of two carbon capture pilot units. One unit was for Heidelberg Materials / Shell Catalysts & Technologies, and the second one was for Teck Resources Limited / Shell Catalysts & Technologies.
The two carbon capture pilot units are part of the Canopy by T.EN suite of modular post-combustion carbon capture solutions powered by Shell's CANSOLV CO2 Capture System, according to an earlier news release.
The Canopy pilot units will allow capture of up to 1.5 kilotons of carbon dioxide per annum each from the cement plant of Heidelberg Materials in Edmonton, Canada, and Teck’s Trail Operations, one of the world’s largest fully integrated zinc and lead smelting and refining complexes in Trail, Canada.
Through the pilot units, Technip Energies said it aims to demonstrate the reliability of its technology and the efficiency of its carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) solutions in new industries.
“We are proud to have completed both Carbon Capture Pilots within the clients’ tight schedule”, Knut Bredahl, Managing Director of Operations at KANFA, said. “This achievement demonstrates our capability to perform fast-track EPF modularized projects while keeping high-quality standards. Our agile approach, alongside the dedication of our team and partners, remains unwavering as we continue to deliver compact modular solutions to assist our clients in achieving their decarbonization objectives”.
“This demonstrates Technip Energies’ ability to support our customers through their decarbonization journey by capturing carbon with confidence”, Christophe Malaurie, SVP for Decarbonization Solutions of Technip Energies, said. “We strongly believe our new Canopy by T.EN offering will pave the way for more sustainable operations across different industries worldwide”.
Technip Energies describes itself as a leading engineering and technology company for the energy transition, with leadership positions in liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen and ethylene as well as growing market positions in blue and green hydrogen, sustainable chemistry and CO2 management.
