Cecilia Jamasmie Feb 10 2019
Canada’s Cameco, the world's largest publicly traded uranium miner, is in no rush to resume production at its idled operations due to “ongoing challenging and uncertain” uranium market conditions.
The Saskatchewan-based miner indefinitely shut last year its flagship McArthur River mine — the world's biggest — and also the Key Lake mill, which has helped the market. But while the company says it has seen a significant improvement over the past year, with prices up about 20%, it believes conditions are not where they need to be to restart idled capacity, or to warrant investment in value-adding growth opportunities.

Reuters | 5 days ago |
Kazakh uranium miner Kazatomprom expects further revenue growth this year on higher prices, it said on Wednesday after posting a 112 percent jump in 2018 adjusted net profit on higher sales volumes and prices.
London-listed Kazatomprom's net income adjusted for one-off transactions stood at 66.8 billion tenge (about $177 million), it said in a statement.
The world's biggest uranium miner said it expected 2019 consolidated revenue of 485-505 billion tenge, with higher prices offsetting lower physical sales.
For 2018, revenue rose 58 percent to 436.6 billion tenge while Kazatomprom's uranium <UX-U3O8-SPT> sales grew 65 percent in physical terms, it said.
But this year, Kazatomprom plans to sell slightly less uranium in physical terms, its presentation showed – 13,500 to 14,500 tonnes compared with 15,287 tonnes in 2018.
Without one-off adjustments, Kazatomprom's 2018 profit surged 173 percent to 380.3 billion tenge last year, according to the statement.
The company would stick to the previously announced plans to make dividend payments of no less than $200 million for 2018 and 2019, Kazatomprom chief executive Galymzhan Pirmatov told reporters on Wednesday.

26 April 2019
Australia’s federal government has given the go ahead to Cameco's vast Yeelirrie uranium project, located 500 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia.
.....
Cameco, the world's largest uranium producer, is seeking to develop what is considered one of Australia’s biggest undeveloped uranium deposits in the Mid-West region of Western Australia.
The miner, however, is in no rush to develop it. It has said that a decision to advance any of its projects in Western Australia would depend on market conditions, which it currently considers “challenging and uncertain”.
Yeelirrie, which in the local native language means "place of death", would cover an area 9 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide and would involve clearing up to 2,422 hectares of native vegetation.

May 2, 2019
Kyrgyzstan's parliament voted on Thursday to ban uranium exploration and mining in the Central Asian nation despite previously issuing licenses to foreign companies such as Canada's Azarga Uranium.
The move, which may expose the Bishkek government to compensation claims from foreign investors, followed a series of public protests against plans to develop the Kyzyl Ompul project in which Azarga has a stake.
"Parliament has taken a historic decision… Uranium mining will be prohibited," speaker Dastan Jumabekov told the legislature after Thursday's vote by which it ordered the government to draft the necessary bills to enforce the ban.
The only exception will be made for the reprocessing of waste in Soviet-era tailings.
Kyrgyzstan produces no significant volumes of uranium, which is used to generate electricity in nuclear power stations, but has an idle uranium mill. A handful of companies from the United States, Australia, China and other countries are exploring local deposits.
UrAsia, the company developing Kyzyl Ompul and in which Azarga owns a 70 percent stake, is being taken over by the Central Asian Uranium Company for $5.85 million in cash payments and a commitment to fund $1.5 million of exploration and development expenditures.

http://www.world-nuclear-news.org/Artic ... ia-uraniumFeasibility study completed for Mauritania uranium mine
29 July 2019
A newly completed definitive feasibility study for the Tiris uranium project in Mauritania has confirmed low capital operating costs for the development, Australian company Aura Energy Limited has announced.
The capital cost for the project is estimated at USD62.9 million, including the scope of facilities and services required to design, purchase and construct the entire project, up to practical completion and handover to operations. Total cash operating costs are estimated at USD25.43 per pound U3O8, with the all-in sustaining cost - which includes royalties, life-of-mine sustaining capital, insurances and product transport - estimated at USD29.81 per pound U3O8. Average annual production of 823,000 pounds U3O8 (317 tU) over a 15-year mine life is envisaged.
Aura Executive Chairman Peter Reeve said the capital cost estimate, 85% of which was sourced from direct supplier quotes, was amongst the lowest all-in life-of-mine capital costs of any currently proposed uranium development project.
"The completion of the Tiris Uranium Project Definitive Feasibility Study has concluded that the project possesses both a very low capital development cost and a very low operating cost, and validates Aura's long held view that the Tiris Project is one of the most compelling uranium development projects in the world at the current time," he said.
Tiris, located in the Sahara Desert in northeast Mauritania, was first discovered by Aura Energy in 2008, and is the first major calcrete uranium discovery in the region. The project has a JORC-compliant resource of 52 million pounds U3O8, and a maiden reserve estimate of 8.1Mlb U3O8. Ore reserves are those portions of the mineral resource that are judged to technically and economically viable to extract. The mineralisation lies at largely lies within 3 to 5 metres of the surface, and will be mined using conventional open pit methods.
Vanadium also occurs in the Tiris ore at a grade of 330 ppm V2O5 - a similar concentration to the U3O8 - and its recovery is considered to be technically achievable. Reeve identified vanadium recovery as one of several areas of "project upside", alongside potential for increases to reserves and resources, as well as optimisation across mining and processing areas.
"As such, Aura is confident that the operating team will be able to improve the project and financial outcomes in the production phase," he said.
Tiris is fully permitted for development - although some operating permits would be required - and construction-ready, the company said. It will now focus on securing the funding package for the project, as well as carrying out further optimisation work.

Brazil will resume production at the country’s single uranium mine before the year is out, according to energy minister Bento Albuquerque.
Located in the north-eastern state of Bahia, the Caetité mine ceased operations in 2014 but is now being used to spearhead President Jair Bolsonaro’s plans to reinvigorate his country’s nuclear power sector.
The recently elected 64-year-old hopes to relieve state-owned Industrias Nucleares do Brasil of its control over Brazilian nuclear energy and open up the industry to the private sector.
Brazil is home to the seventh-largest uranium reserves in the world, but analysis by the World Nuclear Association suggests just 33% has been explored.
The country’s two nuclear plants, Angra 1 and Angra 2, provide roughly 3% of its energy needs, with a third, Angra 3, due for a completion in 2023.
