No Hurricanes Strike USA For 1st Time in a Decade

For the first time in a decade, not a single hurricane struck the U.S. this season, and that was a much needed break.

That’s what Neil Jacobs, Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Administrator, said in a statement posted on NOAA’s site recently, which summarized the Atlantic, Eastern Pacific, and Central Pacific hurricane seasons.

“Still, a tropical storm caused damage and casualties in the Carolinas, distant hurricanes created rough ocean waters that caused property damage along the East Coast, and neighboring countries experienced direct hits from hurricanes,” Jacobs said in the statement.

Effet contrasté du puissant El Niño : la saison des ouragans est très active dans le Pacifique , actuellement 1 tempête et 4 ouragans dont 3 majeurs, mais très calme dans l'Atlantique: seulement 5 tempêtes tropicales jusque là mais encore aucun ouragan au 5 septembre

Atlantic Hurricane Season Remains Most Tranquil Since 1941

September is usually the month when deadly Atlantic hurricanes menace coastal communities from Nicaragua to Newfoundland, but the world’s second-largest ocean hasn’t been this docile since 1941.

Dry air, a stable atmosphere and storm ripping wind shear are suppressing every system that emerges, fulfilling predictions that a strong El Niño will make it a quiet hurricane season. So far this year, the Atlantic has produced five short-lived tropical storms and no hurricanes.

“We’re crushing all sorts of shear records this year,” said Phil Klotzbach, lead author of Colorado State University’s annual seasonal forecast. “The models are so anemic on storm development coming up in the next 10 days too.”
